_unins.tmp can be a temporary executable left by an Inno Setup uninstaller. Windows does not allow a running executable to delete itself, so the uninstaller can arrange for the file to be removed after the next restart. If the file is in the temporary folder created by an uninstall that has finished, and no uninstaller is still running, Inno Setup’s FAQ says it can be deleted manually or cleared when Windows restarts.

That explanation applies to a file created by the installer. The name alone does not prove that every _unins.tmp is safe. Verify the full path and timing, inspect its properties and digital signature when available, and scan an unidentified copy with Microsoft Defender before removing it.

What is _unins.tmp?

_unins.tmp is commonly an uninstall temporary executable associated with Inno Setup, a Windows installer framework. During removal of an application, the uninstaller may need to delete files that are still in use. Because Windows prevents a running executable from deleting itself, Inno Setup can copy or rename the uninstaller to a temporary file and schedule that file for deletion at the next restart.

The Inno Setup FAQ (Jordan Russell Software) explains the behavior this way: “The reason the file remains in the directory after the uninstall process has completed is that Windows does not allow running executables to delete themselves.” A leftover file therefore does not, by itself, mean that the uninstall failed or that Windows is infected.

Where does the file usually appear?

Inno Setup creates a {tmp} directory for Setup or Uninstall operations. Its actual folder name varies, so the path can look different from one installation to another. An Inno Setup community report describes _unins.tmp inside a temporary uninstall folder, which is consistent with the documented cleanup process but does not prove that every file with that name came from Inno Setup.

Record the complete path before taking action. A file in a recently used temporary uninstall directory has a different context from a file with the same name in a system folder, a downloads folder, or an application’s permanent installation directory.

Is _unins.tmp safe?

It can be a normal Inno Setup uninstall leftover, but the filename is not a safety certificate. Treat the individual file as unidentified until its location, timing, publisher information, and security scan support the installer explanation.

  • Context that supports a normal leftover: the file appeared during or immediately after an uninstall, it is under a temporary folder, and no uninstall process is still running.
  • Information that improves identification: the file’s Properties dialog shows a digital signature and a recognizable publisher, and the signature is reported as valid.
  • A reason to pause: the file is in an unexpected permanent folder, appeared without an uninstall, has no trustworthy publisher information, or is detected by Microsoft Defender.

Why the .tmp extension is not enough

Extensions describe how a file is named, not who created it or what it contains. A third-party listing for one file associated with Master PDF Editor 5.8.52 reports a signature and a clean VirusTotal result, but that is evidence about that particular file, not about every _unins.tmp on another computer. Do not generalize a listing, a filename, or an extension to your own copy.

What a digital signature can and cannot tell you

A valid Authenticode signature can identify the signer of a particular executable and show whether Windows considers the signature valid. It does not establish that every file with the same name is genuine, and it does not replace checking the path, uninstall timing, or a malware scan.

Which checks distinguish an uninstall leftover from an unknown file?

Use the checks below in order. They are assessments of one file, not a universal score for the name _unins.tmp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Finding that fits an Inno Setup leftover What to do
Full path and parent folder A temporary directory created for a recent Setup or Uninstall operation Continue with the running-process and signature checks; do not delete solely because the folder is temporary.
Timing The file appeared while or immediately after an application was uninstalled Keep the uninstaller context in mind while verifying the file.
Active uninstall No uninstaller is still running Manual deletion is permitted by the Inno Setup FAQ for an identified leftover.
Digital signature A valid signature identifies a publisher associated with the installer or application Use the signer as supporting evidence, not as the only test.
Microsoft Defender result The selected file or folder is not flagged Combine the clean result with the path and timing before removing the file.

How do I check whether an uninstall is still running?

Do not remove a temporary executable while an uninstaller may still need it. Finish or cancel any visible uninstall window, then check Windows for an installer or uninstaller process that is still active. If the application is still being removed, let that operation finish and wait for it to close before handling the file.

If you cannot tell whether the process has ended, the safer choice is to restart Windows rather than force-delete the file. Inno Setup relies on the restart so Windows can perform the scheduled deletion after the executable is no longer running.

How do I inspect the file’s publisher and signature?

Windows exposes signature information in the file’s Properties dialog when the executable contains a signature.

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the exact path you recorded.
  2. Right-click _unins.tmp and choose Properties.
  3. If a Digital Signatures tab is present, select it and review the signer listed for the file.
  4. Open the signature details and check whether Windows reports the signature as valid.
  5. Note the signer and validity result alongside the full path. A missing tab, an unknown signer, or an invalid signature means you need the scan and context checks rather than an automatic deletion.

Inno Setup’s verification guidance uses this Properties and Digital Signatures path to inspect Authenticode details. Signature information belongs to that one file; it cannot certify another copy found elsewhere.

How do I scan _unins.tmp with Microsoft Defender?

Scan an unidentified or suspicious file before opening or deleting it. Microsoft documents a context-menu scan for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  1. In File Explorer, locate the file or the folder that contains it.
  2. Right-click the item. On the newer Windows context menu, choose Show more options if the Defender command is not immediately visible.
  3. Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
  4. Wait for the scan to finish and read the result. If Defender detects a threat, follow Windows Security’s recommended action and do not manually run the file.

A clean scan is useful evidence, but it does not turn an unexplained path into a confirmed Inno Setup file. Keep the location, uninstall timing, signature result, and scan result together when deciding what happened.

How do I safely remove an identified leftover?

Once you have established that the file is an Inno Setup uninstall leftover and no uninstaller is running, the official FAQ says manual deletion is safe. Restarting is an alternative because Windows may already have scheduled the file for deletion.

  1. Confirm the application uninstall has completed and all installer or uninstaller windows are closed.
  2. Confirm the file is in the temporary uninstall context you recorded, rather than an unexpected permanent folder.
  3. Inspect its signature when available and scan it with Microsoft Defender if its origin is not clear.
  4. Delete the file through File Explorer. If you prefer not to remove it immediately, restart Windows and check whether the scheduled cleanup has removed it.
  5. After the restart, verify whether the file is gone. Do not keep deleting newly appearing copies without checking what process is recreating them.

If Windows says the file is in use

Close any remaining installer or uninstaller and try again only after it has ended. If the file remains locked or Windows has already scheduled it for deletion, restart the computer and check again. Avoid deleting a file that an active uninstall still needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If access is denied

Access-denied behavior does not identify the file as safe or malicious. First recheck that the path and ownership make sense, then run the Microsoft Defender scan and restart Windows. If the file is still present after reboot, preserve the exact error text and path instead of applying an unverified force-delete procedure.

If the file keeps returning

A recurring copy means the context needs another look. Check whether an application repair or uninstall is being launched again, whether the same temporary folder is recreated, and whether the file’s signature and Defender result match the original checks. The available documentation explains the one-time cleanup behavior but does not establish one universal cause or repair for every recurring error.

What if an uninstall reports an error involving _unins.tmp?

There is no single documented fix for every Windows message that mentions this filename. The appropriate response depends on the exact wording, the full path, whether an uninstaller is still running, and the signature and scan results.

When the error appears after an uninstall has finished

Use the context checks above. If the file is an identified Inno Setup temporary leftover and no uninstaller is active, delete it manually or restart so Windows can perform the scheduled cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the error appears during an active uninstall

Leave the file in place while the uninstaller is running. Record the application name, the full path, and the exact error text. Ending the process or deleting its temporary executable can interrupt removal, so allow the operation to finish or restart only when the uninstaller is no longer active.

When the file’s origin is unclear

Do not infer safety from the name. Check Properties and Digital Signatures, scan the file or containing folder with Microsoft Defender, and retain the exact results. If the message persists, those details are the useful evidence to provide to the application’s support channel or a qualified technician.

What should you avoid doing?

  • Do not assume every _unins.tmp is safe because one example was harmless.
  • Do not assume every .tmp file is malware because it has an unfamiliar extension.
  • Do not delete the file while an uninstall is still running.
  • Do not rely on a third-party file listing or a clean result for a different file.
  • Do not apply a supposed universal repair when the exact error message and path have not been identified.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. Frequently asked questions

Will deleting _unins.tmp uninstall the application?

No. In the documented Inno Setup scenario, it is a temporary executable used to finish cleanup after the main uninstall. Removing an already completed leftover does not perform the application’s full uninstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the same filename belong to a specific application?

Yes, an installer can create the name during removal, and a third-party listing has associated one example with Master PDF Editor 5.8.52. That association identifies only the listed file; use your own file’s path, signature and scan result to determine its origin.

Is a restart mandatory?

Not necessarily. If the file has been identified as an Inno Setup leftover and no uninstaller is running, the FAQ allows manual deletion. A restart is the hands-off alternative that lets Windows carry out the scheduled cleanup.

What details should I include when asking for help?

Provide the complete path, the exact error wording, the application being installed or removed, whether an uninstall process was still running, the digital-signature signer and validity result, and the Microsoft Defender scan result. Those details distinguish a normal cleanup artifact from an unrelated file with the same name.
