A 502 Bad Gateway error means a server acting as a gateway or proxy received an invalid response from another server it contacted. For someone trying to open a website, it usually points to a problem in the communication path between servers—not automatically to a fault with their computer. Visitors can retry and check whether the problem is local; persistent errors generally need the site operator to investigate the gateway and upstream service.
What does “502 Bad Gateway” mean?
A gateway or proxy is an intermediary in a web request. A reverse proxy, for example, can manage requests to a website’s servers using functions such as load balancing, authentication, decryption, or caching. A 502 tells you that the intermediary received a response from an upstream server but treated that response as invalid. It identifies a failure in the request path, not the exact component or cause. MDN Web Docs describes the 502 status in those terms; its definition does not identify a particular website platform or server product.

“Upstream” means the server or service the gateway contacted to handle the request. The visible error may be displayed in a browser or styled by a website, but its wording alone does not show which upstream component failed or whether the issue is temporary. A visitor usually cannot diagnose that from the status code alone.
Is a 502 error a problem with my computer?
Not necessarily. The status describes an invalid response received by an intermediary, so the issue may be on the website’s server path. If other visitors can open the site while you cannot, local network access, firewall or proxy settings, DNS configuration, a VPN, or another custom network route are worth checking. Those checks narrow down possibilities; they do not prove the cause. MDN’s guidance distinguishes visitor-side checks from investigation by the service operator.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How is 502 different from 504, 500, and 503?
These status codes describe different server-side conditions. The key difference between 502 and 504 is whether the gateway received an invalid response or did not receive a response in time.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 502 Bad Gateway | A gateway or proxy received an invalid response from an upstream server. MDN |
| 504 Gateway Timeout | A gateway or proxy did not receive an upstream response in time. MDN |
| 500 Internal Server Error | A generic internal server error. MDN |
| 503 Service Unavailable | The server is not ready to handle the request, commonly during maintenance or overload. MDN |
The code is a useful clue, but none of these labels provides a complete diagnosis by itself.

What should I do if I see a 502 error?
If you are visiting the site, try the checks below in order. They can help establish whether the failure is temporary or related to the route you are using, but they cannot repair a problem in a website’s server infrastructure.
- Retry after a short interval. Reload the page once after waiting briefly. If the same error returns, do not assume repeated refreshing will fix it.
- Check whether it affects others or other devices. Try the site on another device or ask whether another visitor can open it. If it works for others but not for you, look more closely at your own connection and network settings.
- Check your network path. If you use a VPN or a custom network route, consider whether it is involved. Check that your network access is working, and review any firewall or proxy settings that might affect the request.
- Review DNS configuration if you use custom settings. Compare the result on another network, if available. A change in outcome can help narrow down whether your network path is involved, but it does not establish the root cause.
- Contact the site’s support team if the error persists across networks. Include the page you were trying to open, when the error occurred, and whether you reproduced it on another device or connection. This gives the operator useful context for investigating the service path.
What should a website owner or administrator check?
For an administrator, the status code is a starting point for tracing the request between the gateway and its upstream service. It says that the gateway received an invalid upstream response; it does not name the upstream component or the configuration responsible.

- Trace the gateway-to-upstream path. Identify which upstream service handled the affected request and examine the relevant request path.
- Review gateway, proxy, and server logs. Look for records corresponding to the failed request and compare what the gateway received with what the upstream service was expected to return.
- Check proxy configuration and responsibilities. A proxy may handle functions such as load balancing, authentication, decryption, or caching, so the relevant part of the path depends on how the service is set up. MDN’s proxy overview explains these intermediary roles.
- Use the logs and request path to isolate the cause. The 502 response alone cannot establish whether a particular upstream service, proxy behavior, or configuration caused the invalid response.
If the visitor-side checks do not resolve the problem, the service operator’s investigation is usually the meaningful next step; changing unrelated computer hardware or repeatedly clearing browser data is not a diagnosis of an invalid upstream response.
If you are also troubleshooting common issues or settings on your Windows PC, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address some common Windows issues and adjust settings; results vary, and it cannot repair a website’s upstream server problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What information should I give a website’s support team about a 502?
Share the affected page, the approximate time it happened, and whether the error also appeared from another device or network. These details help the operator correlate your report with its request and server logs.

Can a 502 error tell a website owner exactly which server failed?
No. The response identifies an invalid upstream reply as seen by the gateway, but not the particular upstream component or configuration at fault. The operator needs to investigate the request path and relevant logs.
Why might a site show its own wording instead of “502 Bad Gateway”?
The status code describes the response condition, while a site may present that condition in a customized error page. The wording or appearance of that page does not, by itself, identify the cause.
