A Kinsect is an in-game insect companion used with the Insect Glaive in several Monster Hunter games. It interacts with monsters to collect extracts or attack, and those extracts can strengthen the hunter. The exact controls and effects depend on the game: the harvest-and-recall loop in Monster Hunter Generations differs from the automatic Kinsect behavior documented for Monster Hunter Now.
What a Kinsect does
Capcom describes the Insect Glaive as pairing a glaive with Kinsects, “insects that harvest extract from monsters to power you up” in its Monster Hunter Generations manual. In the games documented here, the Kinsect is part of the weapon’s in-game system: it interacts with monsters, and its extracts provide effects to the hunter.
There is no single Kinsect control scheme or universal set of Kinsect types across the series. Identify the specific game and version before following a guide or comparing Kinsects.
How extracts work in Monster Hunter Generations
In Monster Hunter Generations, the extract color depends on the monster part targeted. The manual describes these effects:

- Red: improves attack capability.
- White: improves movement speed and jump height.
- Orange: negates knockback when attacking.
- Green: heals on contact.
The Kinsect has a stamina gauge. When its stamina is depleted, it slowly returns to the hunter’s arm. These color effects and stamina details are specific to Generations; they should not be treated as a series-wide Kinsect chart.
How the system differs by game
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
The Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate manual documents aiming at and marking a target, sending the Kinsect to collect extract, and recalling it to the hunter. Those are controls for that game, not universal button inputs.

Monster Hunter Now
In Monster Hunter Now, the Kinsect normally stays on the hunter’s shoulder and attacks automatically after certain hunter actions. A Kinsect hit collects one extract regardless of which part of the monster it hits. The Help Center also lists Kinsect types, performance types, attack types, and bonuses; these categories belong to Now’s system and are not interchangeable with Generations’ extract-color effects.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
In Rise: Sunbreak, Kinsects are in-game equipment: players can purchase them at the Smithy and equip one to the currently equipped Insect Glaive. The Kinsect’s effect depends on that glaive’s Kinsect level. This is an equipment mechanic within the game, not a physical accessory.

How to choose or compare a Kinsect
Start with the game and version you are playing, then use that title’s own comparison criteria. For Generations, the cited manual explains extract colors and their effects. For Monster Hunter Now, consult its listed Kinsect, performance, and attack types and bonuses. These are different systems, so there is no supported universal “best Kinsect” independent of a game, build, or goal.
