WDF_VIOLATION is Windows stop code 0x0000010D. It means the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework (KMDF) detected an error in a framework-based kernel driver. In practical terms, a driver for hardware such as a graphics card, USB device, Wi-Fi adapter, audio interface, printer, storage controller or another peripheral broke a framework rule or entered an invalid state, so Windows stopped to protect the system. The message does not prove that a game, browser or other ordinary user-mode app caused the crash. The reliable fix is to identify the implicated driver from the crash dump or named module, then update, roll back or remove that driver and its related firmware or service.
What does the WDF_VIOLATION stop code mean?
WDF stands for Windows Driver Framework, and KMDF is its kernel-mode component for building Windows drivers. Bug check 0x0000010D is raised when KMDF detects that a framework driver violated a requirement or reached a state that Windows cannot safely continue from. Because the failure occurs in kernel mode, the whole operating system can blue-screen even when the visible activity was launching a game, waking from sleep or connecting a peripheral.

Microsoft describes the code as indicating that “Kernel-Mode Driver Framework (KMDF) detected that Windows found an error in a framework-based driver.” That wording identifies the class of failure, not the responsible vendor. The faulting module and call stack in a dump are needed before assigning blame.
Why does WDF_VIOLATION happen?
The stop code is a driver-framework symptom rather than one single defect. Common triggers include a newly installed or updated device driver, outdated BIOS or UEFI firmware, a device that mishandles power-management requests, or a service that sends invalid plug-and-play or power requests.

The first bug-check parameter identifies the failure class. Microsoft documents examples such as:
- A framework driver timing out while handling a power operation.
- An invalid lock acquisition or a null parameter.
- Using the wrong type of framework-object handle or deleting a framework object incorrectly.
- Putting a DMA transaction into an invalid state.
- Fatal request handling, conflicting state-changing plug-and-play requests or an unsolicited power IRP.
- A callback returning at the wrong IRQL or while the driver is still in a critical region.
These parameter values are diagnostic clues, not a list of repairs to try blindly. Interpret them with the dump, the faulting module and the call stack. A Microsoft-named module in the stack can be part of the path that detected the violation without being the original defective vendor driver.

Start by preserving evidence before changing several drivers at once. A clean record makes it possible to undo a change and gives a hardware vendor something concrete to investigate.
1. Record the complete crash information
Write down WDF_VIOLATION, the hexadecimal code 0x0000010D, every parameter shown on the blue screen, and any filename or module Windows displays. Note what happened immediately beforehand: waking from sleep, plugging in a USB device, starting a game, enabling a headset, installing an update or changing a graphics setting.

If Windows created a minidump or memory dump, copy it before cleanup software or repeated crashes overwrite it. The dump can preserve the driver name and call stack that the blue screen omits.
2. Read the dump with a debugger when possible
A technician can open the dump in WinDbg and run the debugger’s !analyze extension. For a framework-specific log, Microsoft documents !wdfkd.wdflogdump <WDF_Driver_Name>. The output should be considered alongside the parameter values and stack; a single line naming a system component is not, by itself, proof of fault.
3. Check whether the crash follows a device or recent change
Disconnect a recently added peripheral, dock or adapter and test the system without it. If the blue screen stops, install the current driver package supplied for that exact device and Windows edition. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, a rollback to the previously working package is generally easier to reverse than changing several unrelated components.
How do I fix WDF_VIOLATION on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Use the following sequence from lowest risk to most diagnostic. Stop when the crashes cease, but keep the dump and change notes in case the problem returns.

1. Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings, choose Windows Update (on Windows 10, Update & Security > Windows Update), install available updates and restart. Framework and inbox-driver fixes are delivered through Windows servicing, so testing on a fully updated system removes a known variable.
2. Update BIOS or UEFI firmware safely
Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for firmware that matches the exact model and revision. Read the vendor’s recovery instructions, connect reliable power, and do not interrupt the flash process. Firmware updates can correct power-state and device-enumeration behavior that a driver depends on, but they are less reversible than a normal driver update, so record the current version first.

3. Update the implicated device driver
Use the hardware maker’s current package for the exact model, rather than a generic package for a similar device. Graphics, chipset, storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, audio and printer drivers are frequent framework participants on gaming PCs. If the crash started after an update, use the vendor’s supported rollback procedure or reinstall the last known-good package instead of layering several versions over one another.
4. Isolate the driver in Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. From Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup (or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10), choose Restart now, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart and choose Safe Mode. If the system is stable there, disable or remove the recently added driver or service, restart normally and install the vendor’s corrected package. Safe Mode isolation narrows the suspect list; it does not by itself prove that the hardware is defective.

5. Remove the triggering device or service temporarily
For a crash tied to a dock, controller, headset, capture device or other accessory, shut down, disconnect it and test again. Reconnect one item at a time after updating its driver. If a companion utility installs a kernel service, temporarily disable that utility using the vendor’s instructions and retest; keep a record so you can restore normal startup.
6. Use Driver Verifier only for targeted diagnosis
Driver Verifier can apply stricter checks to KMDF requirements and deliberately stop the system when a selected driver violates them. Microsoft warns that it can slow Windows and cause additional crashes, so it is an advanced diagnostic tool, not a routine “repair” switch. Select only the suspected third-party driver, keep recovery access available, and turn verification off after collecting a reproducible dump. Applying it to every driver at once can obscure the result and make the machine difficult to use.
7. Escalate with the evidence
If the WDF log or debugger identifies a vendor driver, send the dump, parameters, driver version, Windows build and reproduction steps to that hardware or software vendor. Microsoft’s guidance is to use current Windows updates and firmware, then contact the responsible vendor when a driver is implicated. Include whether Safe Mode changed the behavior and which peripheral was connected; those details often distinguish a power-management defect from a request or object-lifetime bug.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which troubleshooting method should I try first?
Routine updates and Safe Mode are appropriate for most users. Dump analysis and targeted verification provide stronger evidence but carry more complexity and, in the case of Driver Verifier, a deliberate risk of extra crashes.

Is WDF_VIOLATION the same as DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION?
No. WDF_VIOLATION is bug check 0x10D and concerns an error detected by the Kernel-Mode Driver Framework. DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION is bug check 0xE6, a separate class covering DMA-verification failures such as buffer overruns, invalid DMA state or misuse of DMA routines.
The two codes can appear in investigations involving the same hardware because Driver Verifier may exercise DMA paths, but their numbers and meanings are different. Use the exact stop code and dump output when searching vendor documentation or opening a support case.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek vendor help?
Escalate when the crash persists after Windows, firmware and the implicated driver are current; when Safe Mode is the only stable mode; when the dump repeatedly names the same third-party module; or when Driver Verifier produces a reproducible failure for one driver. Provide the dump, WDF log if available, parameter values, hardware model, driver version and the action that triggers the crash. This is more useful than reporting only that the computer “blue-screened.”
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official driver packages, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; the 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription, and results vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a game itself cause WDF_VIOLATION?
A game usually triggers activity rather than directly violating KMDF. Starting a game can initialize a graphics, audio, anti-cheat, USB or network driver, so the timing is useful evidence while the kernel driver remains the primary suspect.
Where are Windows crash dumps stored?
Small dumps are commonly written under %SystemRoot%Minidump, while a configured kernel or complete dump is usually saved in the Windows directory. Copy the files before repeated crashes or cleanup removes older entries.
Will reinstalling Windows fix this blue screen?
A reinstall can remove conflicting software, but it also discards useful diagnostic context and may not correct a defective device driver or firmware package. Preserve the dump and test the implicated hardware and vendor driver first.
Does WDF_VIOLATION mean my hardware is failing?
Not necessarily. The code reports that a framework-based driver broke a rule; the underlying cause can be software, firmware, power-state handling or a device interaction, and the dump is needed to separate those possibilities.
