ABEventBackup.exe is usually an AOMEI Backupper component used by event-triggered backup jobs, not a documented Windows core file. A copy installed inside the normal AOMEI Backupper folder can be legitimate, but the filename alone proves nothing. Check its complete path, verify its Authenticode signature and signer, and investigate any copy in a temporary, download or unrelated system folder. If AOMEI event backups fail, the usual remedies are restoring the AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service, checking abnotify.exe, correcting security-software blocks, and reinstalling AOMEI Backupper when necessary. The steps below show how to verify the executable safely and repair the service without downloading a replacement from an untrusted site.
What is ABEventBackup.exe?
ABEventBackup.exe is cataloged by third-party file databases as “ABEventBackup Application,” associated with AOMEI International Network Limited and AOMEI Backupper’s event-backup feature. Event-triggered backup means a job can react to an event configured in AOMEI Backupper rather than running only at a fixed clock time. The filename-specific identification is useful for recognition, but it is not a cryptographic identity check.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt is not identified in the reviewed Microsoft material as a Windows component. A legitimate installation may therefore contain it under an AOMEI Backupper directory, while a file with the same name elsewhere could be unrelated or malicious. Catalog records show examples in both C:Program FilesAOMEIAOMEI Backupper and C:Program Files (x86)AOMEIAOMEI Backupper. Records span older 4.x and 5.x releases and 6.x records with different hashes, so a hash copied from a website is not a universal test for every release.

Is ABEventBackup.exe safe or a virus?
It can be safe when it belongs to a properly installed and signed AOMEI Backupper copy, but you should not trust it solely because the name looks familiar. A file in the expected vendor directory is more consistent with the cataloged association than one in a user-download folder or %TEMP%; that comparison is an inference, not a guarantee from AOMEI.
| What you find | How to interpret it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Path is inside the AOMEI Backupper installation directory; the installed AOMEI program launches normally. | Consistent with a legitimate component, subject to signature verification. | Check the Digital Signatures tab and signer before allowing the process. |
Path is under %TEMP%, a browser-download folder, an unrelated system directory or a newly created user folder. |
Not consistent with the usual cataloged location. | Do not replace or whitelist it. Quarantine it through your security software and investigate the source. |
| Expected path but no signature, an invalid signature or an unexpected signer. | Provenance is not established; the file may have been altered or may not be AOMEI’s file. | Do not run it. Scan the file and reinstall AOMEI Backupper from the official AOMEI source if you still need the application. |
| Signature is valid and the signer is expected, but AOMEI reports an error. | The file’s integrity and publisher are supported, but the service or integration can still be broken. | Continue with the service, abnotify.exe, security-policy and log checks below. |
How do I verify ABEventBackup.exe manually?
Use these checks before deleting, replacing or allowing the executable. They preserve useful evidence and distinguish a damaged AOMEI installation from an impostor with the same filename.
- Locate the running file. Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If ABEventBackup.exe is listed, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search from the AOMEI Backupper installation folder rather than downloading another copy. Record the complete path, including the drive letter. - Compare the path with the installed application. A path such as
C:Program FilesAOMEIAOMEI Backupperor the correspondingProgram Files (x86)directory is consistent with third-party catalog records. A path in%TEMP%, a downloads directory or an unrelated folder deserves separate security investigation. Do not treat the path comparison as proof of safety. - Inspect the file properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and note the displayed product, version and publisher information. On the Digital Signatures tab, select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies the expected publisher. A missing tab or a failed validation is a reason to stop and investigate.
- Verify with Microsoft SignTool when you need a command-line result. From a Developer Command Prompt where SignTool is installed, run
signtool verify /pa "C:fullpathABEventBackup.exe". Review the output and certificate signer rather than relying on an exit code copied without context. Microsoft explains that verifying a signature checks that the file has not been altered since signing and that it comes from a trusted source. - Use Sigcheck for additional metadata. Microsoft Sysinternals Sigcheck can show version and timestamp information, certificate-chain details and, when you explicitly choose the option, VirusTotal information. Compare the signer and chain with the file’s location and the AOMEI installation you intentionally installed; a timestamp or a database result alone is not a verdict.
- Respond conservatively to a mismatch. If the file is unsigned, has an unexpected signer or came from an unknown source, do not download a replacement EXE or DLL from a random “missing files” site. Follow your security product’s quarantine procedure, run a trusted malware scan, and reinstall AOMEI Backupper from AOMEI if the backup program is still required. Keep the original path and scan result for troubleshooting or support.
Why does AOMEI event backup not run?
AOMEI’s documented troubleshooting points first to the AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service, the companion abnotify.exe process, installation health and security-software interference. Event-triggered jobs can fail even when ABEventBackup.exe itself is correctly signed.
Check the AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service. Open its properties and check its current status and startup type.
- Start the service if it is stopped. For event jobs that must work after a reboot, set startup type to Automatic, apply the change and restart the service.
- Retry the event-triggered backup and note the exact time and message if it fails again.
If the service will not start, record the Windows error rather than repeatedly clicking Start. A damaged installation, an invalid path or a security policy can prevent the service from loading.

Check abnotify.exe
AOMEI’s FAQ specifically recommends checking whether abnotify.exe is running. In Task Manager, look for that process while AOMEI Backupper is open. If it is absent, first close and reopen AOMEI Backupper, then retry after confirming the Schedule Service is running. Do not obtain abnotify.exe from a download site; use a repair or reinstall of the complete application instead.
How do I fix “Failed to enable backup service”?
AOMEI’s guidance dated May 27, 2026 gives a specific sequence for this message. Work through it in order, and make changes only when you trust the installed copy.
1. Check the installation path
Look at the AOMEI Backupper installation path and make sure it does not contain a semicolon (;). If the path includes one, reinstall to a normal path without that character. Keep the new location consistent with your organization’s permissions and backup policy.
2. Re-enable the service
Open services.msc, select AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service, set startup type to Automatic, and start it. Restart Windows if the service starts but does not remain available, then test the backup again.

3. Run ABCore.exe with elevation
Open the AOMEI Backupper installation directory, right-click ABCore.exe, choose Run as administrator, and allow the elevation prompt only if the path and signature checks identified the installation as trusted. This can repair a service-registration or permissions problem that a normal launch cannot resolve.
4. Review antivirus and Controlled Folder Access
Security software can block a service or prevent it from writing backup data. Review its detection and blocked-app history first. If you trust the installation and your security administrator permits it, add ABCore.exe or the AOMEI Backupper directory to the product’s exclusions. In Windows Security, review Controlled folder access and allow the required AOMEI executable only when you understand the protection trade-off. Never create an exclusion merely to make an unknown, unsigned copy run.

AOMEI’s FAQ explicitly says to reinstall the software and try again when the event-backup problem persists. Obtain the installer from AOMEI, uninstall the damaged copy through Windows’ installed-app controls, restart if requested, and install again. Recheck the path and digital signature after installation, then recreate or validate the event-triggered job.
How do I handle backup-driver or error 4140 problems?
Error 4140 can involve the backup driver rather than the ABEventBackup.exe file itself. AOMEI recommends reinstalling the application, checking antivirus and Controlled Folder Access allowances, and testing whether the ambakdrv driver can start.

- Confirm that the AOMEI installation is trusted and current enough for your Windows release.
- Review security-product blocks and Controlled Folder Access events before changing anything.
- Test whether
ambakdrvstarts as AOMEI directs. If it does not, reinstall rather than copying a driver from an unrelated source. - Do not edit registry filter values casually. Registry changes can prevent storage devices or Windows from starting correctly; make them only with AOMEI support instructions and a recovery plan.
How do I preserve logs and contact support?
Logs are more useful than a screenshot of a generic error. In AOMEI Backupper, open Tools > View Logs and export or retain the entries covering the failed event. AOMEI also directs users to keep the log folder under the program’s installation directory and provide it to AOMEI Support when the issue remains after reinstalling.
Before sending logs, note the Windows edition and build, AOMEI Backupper version, the exact event trigger, whether the Schedule Service was running, the full executable path and the signature result. Remove personal filenames, network paths or other information your organization does not want to disclose. Do not delete the logs until support confirms they are no longer needed.

Should I delete or replace ABEventBackup.exe?
Deleting the file is not a repair. It can disable event-triggered functionality or leave the AOMEI installation in a partially broken state. If the file is in the expected directory and has a valid expected signature, repair the service or reinstall the application instead. If it is in an unexpected directory or fails signature validation, quarantine it through your security software and investigate it as a separate security incident.
A replacement downloaded from a random EXE or DLL site can be tampered with, mismatched to your AOMEI version or bundled with unwanted software. The safe replacement path is a complete installer obtained from AOMEI, followed by a fresh path and signature check.

Which repair approach should I choose?
| Situation | First action | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Expected AOMEI path and valid expected signature; event job does not run | Check Schedule Service, abnotify.exe, and security blocks. |
The service will not start or the job still fails after a controlled reinstall. |
| Expected path but signature is missing or invalid | Do not allow the file; scan and preserve evidence. | Any suspicious detection, persistence or unknown installer source appears. |
| “Failed to enable backup service” | Remove a semicolon from the install path, set the service to Automatic, run ABCore.exe as administrator, and review security controls. |
The message survives an official reinstall. |
| Error 4140 or driver-start failure | Review security controls, test ambakdrv, and reinstall. |
Registry or driver changes would be required; obtain AOMEI support guidance. |
| Issue persists after repair | Collect View Logs and the installation-directory log folder. |
Send the evidence to AOMEI Support with version, path and signature details. |
How can I prevent the error from returning?
- Keep AOMEI Backupper installed in a normal path without a semicolon and avoid moving individual EXE or DLL files by hand.
- After an update or reinstall, verify that AOMEI Backupper Schedule Service still starts automatically.
- Check that
abnotify.exeis present when event-triggered jobs are expected to run. - Review antivirus and Controlled Folder Access notifications instead of permanently disabling protection.
- Test an event-triggered job after changing the trigger, Windows security policy or AOMEI version.
- Retain the latest successful and failed log entries so a later support request includes a timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stop ABEventBackup.exe from starting with Windows?
Stopping the process may prevent event-triggered jobs from responding, even if ordinary on-demand backups still work. Change the event-backup or AOMEI service configuration deliberately, and test a backup afterward instead of renaming or deleting the executable.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a valid digital signature prove that the current installation is trustworthy?
A valid signature supports that the signed file was not altered after signing and identifies a trusted signing chain, but it does not tell you whether you intentionally installed the program or whether another component is causing the error. Confirm the path, installer source and surrounding AOMEI processes as well.
Why do scheduled backups work while event-triggered backups fail?
The two modes can depend on different triggers and notification components. If clock-based jobs run but an event job does not, compare the event definition and check the Schedule Service and notification process while the event is being generated.
What information should I send when asking AOMEI for help?
Include the exact error text, AOMEI Backupper version, Windows edition and build, the executable’s full path, signature result, service status and the time of failure. Attach the relevant entries from Tools > View Logs and the installation-directory log folder after removing information you cannot share.
