acad.exe is the main Windows executable for Autodesk AutoCAD and AutoCAD-based products. A normally installed copy should be inside the Autodesk AutoCAD program folder, carry a valid Autodesk digital signature, and match the AutoCAD release shown in your installation. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe: an executable in an unexpected folder, with an invalid signature or unfamiliar plug-ins, needs investigation.

You can see it in Task Manager while AutoCAD is open, and Windows Event Viewer may identify it as the application that stopped responding or crashed. It is not a standalone Windows component; removing or replacing it outside an AutoCAD repair can make the Autodesk installation unusable.
The normal location varies by AutoCAD release and installation choice, but it is an Autodesk AutoCAD program directory. The path shown by Task Manager’s Open file location command should lead to the same installed release that appears in Autodesk Access or Windows’ installed-apps list.

Is acad.exe safe?
A genuine acad.exe from an intact Autodesk installation is expected. Safety depends on the file’s location, signature, version and the code AutoCAD loads around it, not just on the name.
Verify the executable
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Right-click the running AutoCAD process and choose Open file location. An expected Autodesk AutoCAD installation directory is reassuring; a copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, a download directory or another unrelated path is not.

How do I fix acad.exe errors on Windows?
Follow these steps in order. Stop when the problem is resolved; a clean reinstall should not be the first response to a process that is merely stuck.
1. Close every Autodesk process and restart
- Save work in any open Autodesk program.
- Open Task Manager and end acad.exe and other Autodesk processes that remain after the window closes.
- Restart Windows, then launch AutoCAD once before opening plug-ins, scripts or a large drawing.
This clears a locked process and tests whether the failure is transient. If acad.exe returns immediately after a restart, continue rather than repeatedly killing the process.

2. Install AutoCAD, Autodesk Access and Windows updates
Open Autodesk Access and install updates offered for your AutoCAD release. Then open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates and restart when requested. Updates can replace damaged components, address known crashes and improve compatibility with graphics and security subsystems.
3. Confirm that your AutoCAD release supports Windows
Autodesk’s compatibility guidance says Windows 11 support begins with AutoCAD 2021. AutoCAD 2020 and earlier are not supported on Windows 11. If you moved an older release to Windows 11, an acadres.dll error, launch failure or unexplained crash may be a compatibility issue rather than a missing file. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows), select the Visual C++ entries associated with AutoCAD and choose Modify or Repair when offered. Use Windows’ installed optional features and current Windows updates to repair the .NET components required by your AutoCAD release. 6. Reset AutoCAD and remove custom startup items
Corrupt preferences, templates, CUI files, tool palettes and custom search paths can prevent acad.exe from reaching the drawing window. Use the Reset Settings to Default shortcut supplied with your AutoCAD installation, or the reset option in the Autodesk program group. Record custom settings first if you need to recreate them.

Review the security product’s quarantine and block history, but do not disable protection permanently. If you administer the computer, verify that your Windows account can read the AutoCAD installation and write to the user profile and temporary folders AutoCAD requires.
When testing a suspected conflict, use a controlled, temporary exception approved by your organization’s security policy, then remove it after the test. A security exception is not a substitute for verifying the file’s signature and source.

How do I fix a 0xc000007b error?
Start with the system-requirements check, Visual C++ repair, Windows updates and a restart.
