AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) is a game-integrated graphics technology with two separate parts: temporal upscaling, which renders a game internally at a lower resolution to improve performance, and optional Frame Generation, which inserts generated frames between traditionally rendered frames to make motion look smoother.
To enable it, you need a supported game. Open the game’s Settings, then Graphics, Video, or Display, select AMD FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 under the upscaling or anti-aliasing options, and enable Frame Generation separately if the game provides that control. FSR 3 is not a universal Windows or AMD Software switch.

What does AMD FSR 3 do?
FSR 3 addresses two different performance problems:

- Upscaling: the game renders at a lower internal resolution, then reconstructs an image closer to your display resolution. This reduces GPU workload and can increase rendered FPS.
- Frame Generation: the technology creates an additional frame between two conventionally rendered frames. AMD says this can produce up to twice the displayed frame rate in supported conditions, but it does not double the game’s simulation speed or input responsiveness.
These functions should not be treated as the same feature. Upscaling changes how each frame is rendered. Frame Generation increases the number of frames shown on screen, but the underlying game still processes input and simulation based largely on the original rendered frames. A high FPS counter with Frame Generation enabled can therefore look smoother without feeling as responsive as the same native rendered FPS.

FSR 3 is integrated into selected games by their developers and generally supports DirectX 12 and Vulkan implementations. It cannot normally be added to any game simply by installing a standalone FSR program.
See AMD’s FSR 3 developer documentation and current FSR technology information for implementation and compatibility details.
FSR 3 versus FSR 3.1
FSR 3 refers to the original generation of the technology, combining temporal upscaling with optional Frame Generation. FSR 3.1 is a later revision that improves upscaling quality, adds a new API and Vulkan support, and separates upscaling from Frame Generation. That separation means a game can use FSR 3.1 Frame Generation with a different upscaler, or support one FSR function without supporting the other.

FSR 3.1.1 through 3.1.5 are maintenance releases with fixes and integration improvements. AMD’s GPUOpen documentation lists FSR 3.1.5, released as part of AMD FidelityFX SDK 2.0 in August 2025, as the current FSR 3 branch version in its developer documentation. This is an SDK version, not a guarantee that every released game uses FSR 3.1.5. The version available to you depends on what the developer integrated and whether an officially supported upgrade can replace it.
AMD also now documents newer ML-based FSR Upscaling and “Redstone” technologies. These are not interchangeable terms for classic FSR 3.1. If a game menu says FSR 3 or FSR 3.1, it usually means the older, non-ML FSR 3 family unless the game or AMD Software explicitly identifies a newer ML-based feature.
Upscaling, Frame Generation, and Native AA
| Feature | What it changes | Main benefit | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSR Upscaling | Internal rendering resolution and image reconstruction | Higher performance and lower GPU workload | Possible softness, shimmering, ghosting, or detail loss |
| FSR Frame Generation | Inserts generated frames between rendered frames | Smoother motion and higher displayed FPS | Possible latency, artifacts, stutter, or uneven frame pacing |
| Native AA | Keeps native rendering resolution while applying FSR anti-aliasing | Anti-aliasing without the image reduction of upscaling | Little or no upscaling performance gain |
Native AA is useful when your GPU can already render the target resolution but you want FSR’s anti-aliasing treatment. In supported games, it can also be paired with Frame Generation.

Is your PC compatible?
Compatibility has three separate requirements: the game must integrate FSR 3, the selected renderer or mode must support it, and your hardware must meet the game and feature requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →AMD’s current compatibility information lists:
- FSR 3 upscaling: Radeon RX 590 and newer for AMD’s listed support.
- FSR 3 Frame Generation: Radeon RX 5000 Series and newer for AMD’s listed support.
FSR is designed for broad compatibility across AMD and selected competing graphics hardware, but support varies by title and configuration. AMD’s official technical-support coverage is not identical across vendors, so a card that can technically run a feature is not guaranteed to receive the same support or experience.
Compatibility also does not guarantee good performance. CPU limits, GPU load, resolution, ray tracing, graphics settings, memory configuration, and the quality of the game’s implementation all matter. Frame Generation is most useful when the base rendered FPS is already reasonably stable; it is not a reliable cure for extremely low native performance.
Do not confuse classic FSR 3 upscaling with newer ML-based FSR Upscaling. AMD currently lists that newer ML-based feature for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics, with RX 6000 support identified as planned for 2027. These requirements are different from ordinary FSR 3 temporal upscaling.
Check the game’s graphics menu, AMD’s supported-games information, and the developer’s patch notes. Avoid relying on an undated game list because support can change with patches, editions, platforms, and renderers.

Before you start
- Update your graphics driver through the GPU manufacturer or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Update the game fully.
- Confirm that the specific title and renderer support FSR 3 or FSR 3.1, rather than only an older FSR version.
- Check whether the game uses DirectX 12 or Vulkan and whether FSR is restricted to one of those renderers.
Enable FSR upscaling
- Launch the game.
- Open Settings, Options, or the pause menu.
- Open Graphics, Video, or Display.
- Find Upscaling, Super Resolution, or Anti-Aliasing.
- Select AMD FSR 3, AMD FSR 3.1, or the equivalent label used by the game.
- Choose a quality mode and apply the setting. Restart the game if requested.
The labels differ between games. Some expose one FSR menu and a separate Frame Generation toggle; others place both under an upscaling section.

Enable Frame Generation
- Find Frame Generation, AMD FSR Frame Generation, or FSR 3 Frame Generation.
- Turn it on. Some games require FSR upscaling to be enabled first, while FSR 3.1 implementations may support Frame Generation independently.
- Use the fullscreen or borderless mode recommended by that particular game.
- If the title supports it, enable Radeon Anti-Lag 2 alongside Frame Generation. AMD recommends Anti-Lag 2 in games that support it.
- Apply the setting and restart if required.
Afterward, compare rendered FPS, displayed FPS, frame pacing, and input responsiveness. Do not judge the result by the headline FPS number alone.
Which FSR quality mode should you use?
FSR modes trade internal resolution for performance. The exact scaling behavior and image quality vary by game, but these are sensible starting points:
- Quality: the best first choice at 1440p or 4K, and often the most suitable option at 1080p when you need extra performance.
- Balanced: a compromise when Quality does not deliver enough FPS.
- Performance: a more aggressive option for GPU-limited systems, especially at high resolutions.
- Ultra Performance: intended for demanding high-resolution scenarios. It is more likely to look soft or reveal reconstruction artifacts, particularly at 1080p.
- Native AA: use when image quality is more important than the performance gain from reducing internal resolution.
Recommended starting points
| Display resolution | Start with |
|---|---|
| 1080p | Native resolution or FSR Quality. Avoid Ultra Performance unless necessary. |
| 1440p | FSR Quality, then Balanced if the GPU remains the bottleneck. |
| 4K | FSR Quality or Balanced; try Performance in particularly demanding ray-traced games if the image remains acceptable. |
These are recommendations, not guaranteed performance levels. Your GPU, CPU, game settings, display, and implementation determine the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShould you use Frame Generation?
Enable it when the game already produces a stable, playable rendered frame rate and you value smoother motion more than perfect frame-by-frame image accuracy. It can be particularly useful in single-player games and other visually focused experiences.
Consider leaving it off when:
- Base rendered FPS is very low or unstable.
- You are playing a competitive title where latency matters more than smoothness.
- Fast camera movement, thin geometry, particles, reflections, or UI elements produce distracting artifacts.
- Frame pacing becomes uneven or the feature causes crashes or flicker.
Frame Generation does not make input sampling occur at the generated FPS. Keep the base rendered FPS as high and stable as possible, enable Anti-Lag 2 where supported, and disable Frame Generation if responsiveness is more important than visual smoothness.
AMD Software and newer driver-assisted FSR features
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition also has controls for newer driver-assisted, ML-based FSR upgrades in supported games. These controls are not a universal method for adding classic FSR 3 to every game.

For an eligible title and compatible system:
- Close the game.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open the Gaming tab.
- Open the Graphics sub-tab.
- Enable AMD FSR Upscaling and/or AMD FSR Frame Generation, depending on what the game, driver, GPU, and software support.
- Launch the game.
- Enable FSR 3.1 in the game’s Graphics or Video menu if it is not already enabled.
- Select the quality preset in the game.
AMD says games with FSR 3.1 or higher may be eligible for a supported AMD Software DLL swap to newer ML-based upscaling, while games with FSR 3.1.4 or higher Frame Generation may be eligible for ML-based Frame Generation. Eligibility depends on the title, GPU, driver, and AMD Software implementation.
This is distinct from AFMF—AMD Fluid Motion Frames—which is a separate driver-level frame-generation technology. Neither AFMF nor the newer ML-based controls should be casually described as the same thing as developer-integrated FSR 3 Frame Generation.

The FSR option is missing
- Confirm that the game and graphics driver are fully updated.
- Check whether the game supports FSR 3 or FSR 3.1, rather than only FSR 1 or FSR 2.
- Try the renderer specified by the developer, such as DirectX 12 or Vulkan.
- Check whether the current GPU, platform, graphics mode, or edition is supported.
- Read the developer’s patch notes or support documentation.
Do not mistake an AMD Software graphics control for the game’s native FSR 3 option, and do not download an unofficial DLL simply because a menu item is absent.
Frame Generation is greyed out
The game may require upscaling first, a particular graphics API, a restart after changing the renderer, or hardware above its Frame Generation support threshold. Another temporal or interpolation feature may also conflict with it. Upscaling and Frame Generation require different game-side integration, so support for one does not guarantee support for the other.
The image is blurry
- Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality.
- Use the game’s sharpening control moderately.
- Disable excessive motion blur.
- Check whether dynamic resolution is also enabled.
- Compare FSR with Native AA or native rendering.
- Make sure the display is running at its native resolution.
There is ghosting or shimmering
Thin foliage, hair, fences, particles, transparencies, rapid camera movement, aggressive scaling, and game-specific temporal anti-aliasing interactions can all expose artifacts. Try Quality mode, reduce sharpening, test Native AA, and compare the game’s other upscalers.
There is stutter or uneven frame pacing
Shader compilation, asset streaming, CPU limits, overlays, capture software, incompatible presentation-chain injectors, and poor title-specific implementations can all contribute. GPUOpen warns that software intercepting DXGI calls and some third-party overlays may cause FSR 3 Frame Generation frame-pacing problems; AMD OCAT is identified as validated for use with FSR 3 Frame Generation.

Latency feels worse
Frame Generation adds displayed frames without making the game simulation run at the same rate. Keep the base rendered FPS high, use Anti-Lag 2 where supported, and turn Frame Generation off for latency-sensitive competitive play.
Terminology to remember
- FSR 3 in a game menu: usually developer-integrated temporal upscaling and/or traditional Frame Generation.
- AMD FSR Upscaling in Adrenalin: a newer driver-assisted ML-based feature for supported games and hardware.
- AFMF: a separate driver-level AMD frame-generation technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does FSR 3 require an AMD graphics card?
No. FSR is designed for broad hardware compatibility, and selected games support it on competing GPUs. Exact compatibility and technical support vary by title, vendor, driver, and feature.
Can I enable FSR 3 in any game?
No. The game developer must integrate FSR 3 or FSR 3.1. Installing AMD Software alone will not add the normal in-game FSR 3 option to unsupported titles.
Is FSR 3 the same as newer FSR Upscaling or Redstone?
No. FSR 3.1 is the older, non-ML temporal FSR family. AMD’s newer ML-based FSR Upscaling and Redstone features have separate hardware, software, and game requirements.
Why is my FPS counter high but the game still feels slow?
Frame Generation increases displayed FPS by inserting frames, but the game’s input and simulation still depend on the base rendered FPS. Low or unstable base FPS can therefore leave the game feeling sluggish.
