aprs.exe is usually the main executable for PC Trek’s Advanced Password Recovery Suite, but the filename alone does not prove that a copy is legitimate. The same name appears in malware-analysis records, including a sample classified as Hack.Patcher. Before you allow, delete, or replace it, verify the complete path, publisher signature, hash, version, installation history, and your security scan result.
Use the procedure below to distinguish a normal third-party program file from a renamed or unwanted copy, then repair the installation or remove it without downloading a replacement executable from an untrusted file site.

What is aprs.exe?
In legitimate software records, aprs.exe is the primary executable for Advanced Password Recovery Suite, a PC Trek utility that is described as recovering credentials from applications, wireless networks, mail clients, and FTP software. Version-specific installation records place it in a folder such as C:Program Files (x86)Advanced Password Recovery Suite or the product’s own application directory. The installer is listed as aprs_setup.exe.
It is not a Windows system component. A computer can therefore have no aprs.exe at all and operate normally. If you never intentionally installed Advanced Password Recovery Suite, treat an unexpected copy as a security issue until its origin is established.

Is aprs.exe safe, or could it be malware?
Either is possible. A copy installed with the intended PC Trek application may be genuine, while a file with the same name in a different location may be unrelated or malicious. Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and notes that potentially unwanted applications can slow a machine, display unexpected advertising, or install other software.

Sandbox records show why the name cannot be used as a verdict. ANY.RUN recorded one sample launched from a user Desktop and another copy launched from an Advanced Password Recovery Suite path. A ThreatInfo record describes an approximately 1 MB sample with MD5 948a2bc97bd77e2326e6de38b8db1e0a that received a Hack.Patcher detection; its last analysis was 2024-05-11. Hybrid Analysis has a historical record in which 19 of 72 antivirus vendors marked a dropped aprs.exe sample as malicious. Those observations apply to the analyzed samples, not to every file carrying the name.
ThreatInfo also reports that its particular sample set was 100.0% Windows 10 and 100.0% Singapore. Those percentages describe that database sample, not the prevalence or safety of aprs.exe on all Windows systems.
How do I identify the exact aprs.exe file?
Do not terminate or delete the process until you have recorded where it came from. A full path and file identity are more useful than a filename shown in a pop-up.
- Open the process location. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, select theDetailstab, findaprs.exe, right-click it, and chooseOpen file location. If the process is not running, search File Explorer foraprs.exeand note every copy. - Record the path. Copy the complete folder and filename. Compare it with the expected Advanced Password Recovery Suite directory. A Desktop or temporary-directory copy needs more scrutiny than a file in the application folder, although location alone is not proof either way.
- Inspect Properties. Right-click the file, choose
Properties, and reviewGeneral,Details, andDigital Signatures. Record the publisher, product name, file description, version, signing status, and any certificate details. - Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 'C:fullpathaprs.exe', replacing the path with the one you recorded. Keep the resulting SHA-256 value next to any hash shown by your security alert or trusted installer. A matching filename with a different hash is not the same file. - Check the parent application. Open
Settings > Apps > Installed appson Windows 11 or Windows 10 and search for Advanced Password Recovery Suite. Also check the program’s own uninstaller in its installation folder. If there is no corresponding application and you did not install it, do not launch aprs.exe to “test” it. - Review how it starts. In Task Manager, inspect
Startup appsfor an entry associated with the file. Unexpected scheduled tasks, services, or a startup entry pointing to a user-writable folder increase the risk and should be documented before removal.
Why does aprs.exe keep crashing or show an error?
There is no authoritative list of aprs.exe-specific error codes. The exact dialog text, Windows edition, path, signature, and hash are needed to tell a missing-file problem from a blocked, damaged, unwanted, or malicious copy.

The executable is missing or was quarantined
If an application shortcut reports that aprs.exe cannot be found, Windows may be pointing to a file that was removed by a scanner or deleted during an incomplete uninstall. Do not download a loose copy from a DLL or EXE repository. Confirm whether the parent application is still listed, then use its legitimate installer if you have verified that you actually need the software.

A damaged executable, an interrupted update, or a mismatched file can cause an immediate crash. Compare the file’s version and hash with a known-good installer, and reinstall the entire application rather than replacing only aprs.exe. If the installer itself is flagged, stop and investigate the alert instead of disabling protection.
Windows Security is blocking it
A block can indicate malware, a potentially unwanted application, or a false positive. The correct response depends on the signature, path, installation history, and scan details; a familiar filename is not sufficient reason to create an exclusion.

1. Capture the error and file details
Write down the exact message, when it appears, and what action triggers it. Record the path, publisher, version, signature status, SHA-256 hash, and whether the file is currently running. Screenshots and the timestamp of a security alert can help correlate the event with Windows Security history.
2. Let Windows Security quarantine a detected file
If Microsoft Defender or another reputable scanner identifies aprs.exe, choose Quarantine or Remove rather than Allow. Microsoft explains that quarantine blocks a threat while keeping it in a safe location; allowing a file should be reserved for software and publishers you have independently verified. Do not create an exclusion merely to make an error disappear.
3. Update protection and run a full scan

4. Uninstall an unwanted parent application
If you did not intend to install Advanced Password Recovery Suite, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds), or use its own uninstaller if it is listed. Restart Windows, run another full scan, and check Task Manager’s Startup apps list and the original folder for leftovers. If the uninstaller fails, do not run aprs.exe again; allow the scanner to quarantine remaining components and investigate any persistence it reports.
5. Reinstall only a deliberately chosen, legitimate application
If you intentionally use Advanced Password Recovery Suite and the verified executable is missing or corrupt, obtain the complete application again only from a legitimate publisher or trusted catalog. Microsoft’s SmartScreen guidance recommends downloading software and updates from reputable sources. Scan the installer before opening it, verify its publisher and hash where available, and reinstall the whole product rather than copying an isolated aprs.exe from an unofficial site.

6. Recheck the result
After remediation, start the parent application once and watch for the same dialog, a new path, or a repeat detection. Confirm that the executable’s location and signature still match what you recorded. If the error continues, preserve the exact message and Windows Event Viewer entry and contact the application’s legitimate support channel; there is not enough evidence to prescribe a single command for every aprs.exe failure.
Can I delete aprs.exe?
Do not manually delete the first copy you find while the parent application is installed. Deleting a legitimate executable can leave a broken shortcut, while deleting only one malicious copy may leave persistence behind.
- If a scanner detects it: use quarantine or removal, then scan again.
- If it belongs to an unwanted installation: uninstall the parent application first, restart, scan, and remove any clearly identified leftovers.
- If it belongs to software you intentionally use: repair or reinstall the complete application from a trusted source after verifying its signature and installer.

Should I allow aprs.exe through Windows Security?
Only consider allowing it after you have established all of the following: you intentionally installed the parent application, the file is in its expected directory, the digital signature and publisher are credible, the hash matches a trusted installer or known-good copy, and a current scan provides no unresolved detection. If any one of those checks fails, keep the file quarantined and investigate instead.

An allow-list exception reduces protection for that file or location. It is not a repair for a missing or corrupt executable, and it does not prove that a later replacement with the same name is safe.
