asmwscan.exe is not identified by Microsoft as a Windows component. Dated third-party records associate the name with a product called “Disk Drive Analysis” and the company name “asmwsoft.com,” but the records disagree: one labels a 772 KB file “General Threat” (analysis dated June 6, 2021), while another hash is classified “Undefined” (August 8, 2021). Those labels are leads, not proof that every file with this name is malicious.

Is asmwscan.exe safe or a virus?
You cannot answer that safely from the name. A signed copy installed by software you deliberately obtained is materially different from an unsigned copy in Downloads, Temp, a user profile, Startup or an unfamiliar directory. Even a file with a familiar product description can be replaced or repackaged, so verify the copy on your computer.
Check the file location
- If a warning or crash dialog names the file, do not open it. Write down the full path shown in the dialog.
- If it is running, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details tab, right-click asmwscan.exe, choose Open file location and record the folder. Also note the parent process when Task Manager displays it.
- Right-click the file, select Properties and record its size, creation and modification times, product name, company and file version.
Location gives context, not a verdict. A file in a vendor’s normal, signed installation directory is less suspicious than one launched from a temporary download folder, but legitimate software can use unusual paths and malware can imitate a vendor directory. In Properties > Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. A valid signature should identify a publisher you recognize and report that the digital signature is OK. An absent, invalid or unexpected signature is a reason to keep the file blocked; it is not, by itself, proof of malware. Check that the signer matches the publisher that supplied the parent program, not merely a familiar-looking company name.
Calculate a SHA-256 hash
Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell and run the command below, replacing the path with the one you recorded:

How should I scan an unexpected asmwscan.exe file?
Scan before allowing execution, and keep the original file available if your security team needs to examine it. The safest sequence uses current Defender definitions, a Full scan and, if necessary, Defender Offline.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu and choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection updates and choose Check for updates so the security intelligence is current.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan and start it. A Full scan checks all accessible files and running programs and can take considerably longer than a quick scan.
- If the detection, pop-up or other symptom returns, select Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save your work and allow Windows to restart; the scan runs before the normal desktop loads.
- Open Protection history and read the detection name, affected path and action taken. Choose Quarantine when offered for a file you do not recognize. Quarantine moves the item to a protected location and blocks it while preserving the possibility of review or restoration.
Allow a quarantined file only after you have verified its publisher, source and hash. A dated third-party classification cannot override a current local detection without an explanation from the software publisher or your security administrator.

When should I use Microsoft Safety Scanner or MSRT?
Microsoft Safety Scanner
Microsoft Safety Scanner is a manually launched, portable executable. It does not provide real-time protection, does not appear in the Start menu or as a desktop icon, and expires 10 days after download. Download a fresh copy each time you use it, run the scan type appropriate to the incident, and review %SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.log for the result.
Use it as a second opinion after updating Defender, not as a replacement for real-time antivirus. If the scanner detects the file, follow its removal instructions and run another Defender scan after Windows restarts. Because it is portable, keep the download in a clearly identified folder and avoid confusing it with the file being investigated.

Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT)
Microsoft’s current MSRT page lists version 5.146, published October 13, 2026. MSRT targets prevalent malware families and is complementary to full antivirus protection; a clean MSRT result does not establish that an unknown asmwscan.exe is safe. Its report is stored at %windir%debugmrt.log. MSRT is therefore useful as an additional check, but it is not a substitute for updated Defender definitions, a Full scan or Offline scan.
How do I remove asmwscan.exe safely?
Removal depends on whether the file belongs to an application you wanted. Deleting an executable first can leave a broken installation, while allowing an unwanted program to remain can recreate the file.

If security software detects it
- Choose Quarantine in Windows Security or the security product that detected it.
- Record the detection name and path from Protection history before clearing the history.
- Restart and run another Full scan. If the same file returns, continue with the parent-application steps below and an Offline scan.
If it belongs to an unwanted application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or 10. In Windows 8 or 7, use Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Sort by install date and look for the program installed when the asmwscan.exe file first appeared. Verify its publisher and other symptoms before uninstalling.
- Uninstall the unwanted program, restart, and scan again. Remove only the application you can identify; do not delete random shared files from
C:WindowsorC:WindowsSystem32.
Also check whether the parent program has its own updater or scheduled task. Do not disable random services or startup entries just because they are unfamiliar; document the process path and ask an administrator when the computer is managed.
If it is a required third-party component
Do not copy a replacement executable from a DLL or “registry fixer” website. Obtain a clean installer from the publisher’s official site, verify its signature and hash where available, uninstall the damaged version if the publisher instructs you to do so, then reinstall and rescan. Keep the installer’s download address and version in your support notes so a later recurrence can be traced.
Why does asmwscan.exe keep crashing?
There is no authoritative asmwscan.exe-specific error-code table. A crash can result from a damaged installation, incompatible software, a blocked or quarantined file, missing dependencies or an unwanted program. Capture evidence before changing anything.
- Copy the exact dialog text and error code. Record the full path, file version, signer, SHA-256 hash and the time of each crash.
- Open Windows Security > Protection history and check whether a detection or quarantine action coincides with the crash.
- Open Event Viewer by searching the Start menu. Review Windows Logs > Application around the event time and note the faulting application, faulting module and exception code.

- Run Microsoft Safety Scanner and inspect
msert.logif the cause remains unclear. Keep Defender real-time protection enabled while testing.
A crash by itself is not proof of infection, and forcing an exception for the file can remove an important warning. Resolve the publisher and origin question before attempting compatibility settings or repeated launches. If the crash occurs only when a particular application starts, troubleshoot that application’s installation rather than downloading a standalone asmwscan.exe.
What should I do if Windows blocked the download?
Attachment Manager records where downloaded files came from and may warn or block them. Microsoft’s guidance is: “Only unblock files from trusted sources.” A block is a signal to verify the source, not an instruction to disable SmartScreen.
- Confirm the expected file type, publisher and download address. If you did not intentionally obtain the file, do not unblock it.
- Scan the downloaded file with Microsoft Defender before opening it. Check Properties > Digital Signatures and calculate its SHA-256 hash.
- If the file is legitimate and the publisher is trusted, right-click it, choose Properties, review the security notice and use Unblock only when you understand the origin.
- If the source is uncertain, leave the block in place, delete the download after preserving any evidence required by your administrator, and obtain software only from the publisher’s official site.
Do not turn off SmartScreen, Defender or Attachment Manager merely to make an unknown executable run. If a company security policy blocks the file, contact the administrator with the hash and publisher information instead of creating an exclusion.

Can I delete asmwscan.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the name looks unfamiliar. First identify its path and parent application, check the signature and hash, and record any security detection. If Defender has quarantined it or the file belongs to an application you removed, deleting the remaining installer folder may be appropriate; if it is part of software you still need, reinstall that software instead.
Never delete a file from a protected Windows directory based only on a filename search. If Windows reports that the file is in use, do not take ownership or terminate random system processes; use the parent application’s uninstaller or your organization’s malware-removal procedure. Deleting first can remove evidence needed by a security team and may cause the parent program to recreate the file.
How can I check whether the file comes back after removal?
After uninstalling or quarantining, restart Windows and monitor Task Manager and Windows Security. If the file reappears, note the new path and the process that creates it, then repeat the Full and Offline scans. Persistence can indicate that the parent application or another startup component remains, so remove the identified program rather than repeatedly deleting the executable.
Compare the returning file’s hash and signature with the original. A changed hash means you are not looking at the same binary, even if the name and size appear identical. Record each appearance with its timestamp, creating process and folder; that timeline often identifies the installer or updater responsible.

Should I send asmwscan.exe to an online malware scanner?

Defender or another security product may have quarantined it, or the parent application may have removed a temporary copy. Review Protection history and the parent program’s logs rather than assuming the disappearance proves the computer is clean.
Does Safe Mode prove that asmwscan.exe is harmless?
No. Safe Mode loads fewer drivers and startup programs, which can help isolate a conflict, but it does not validate a publisher, hash or file origin. Use it only as a controlled troubleshooting environment after recording evidence and keeping protection enabled.
