AssistantServices.exe is reported as a program component of ZTE’s legacy Join Air, Mobile Partner and related HSPA/3G modem-management software. It is not a standard Windows system file. A copy inside the modem program’s own folder can be legitimate; a copy in C:Windows, C:WindowsSystem32, a temporary folder or a download directory needs investigation because malware can reuse the filename.
The filename alone cannot prove that the file is safe. Check its full path, confirm whether the associated modem software is installed, and scan unexpected copies with Microsoft Defender. If you no longer use the modem, uninstall its parent package rather than deleting the executable by hand. The detailed checks and fixes below cover both ordinary software errors and suspicious-file cases.

What is AssistantServices.exe?
AssistantServices.exe is described by the third-party File.net process database as an executable associated with Join Air, software developed by ZTE Corporation. Join Air and similar packages managed cellular modem connections and data usage for older HSPA/3G USB devices. Carrier-branded versions were also distributed under names such as PROLiNK HSPA Modem, T-Mobile Mobile Broadband Manager, SMART BRO, D-com 3G and Zain Broadband.
Reported legitimate installations commonly place the file below C:Program Files (x86)Join Air or C:Program Files (x86)Mobile Partner Manager. The related Windows service is reported as UI Assistant. Those details come from a third-party process listing, not a current ZTE specification, and there is no authoritative current ZTE page or supported-version matrix establishing that every file with this name is genuine.

Windows does not require this executable for normal operation. It is not a core Windows component, so its presence usually reflects an old modem-management package that was installed with a USB modem, carrier connection kit or a bundled installer.
Is AssistantServices.exe safe?
It can be safe when it belongs to an installed Join Air, Mobile Partner or equivalent modem package and resides in that application’s program directory. The same name can also be used by unwanted software, so location and context matter more than the spelling of the process name.

Why am I getting AssistantServices.exe errors?
The error usually means Windows is trying to start a legacy modem component that is missing, damaged, blocked or no longer compatible. The exact cause depends on when the message appears and where the executable is stored.
The modem package is damaged
An interrupted installation, disk error or incomplete update can leave the UI Assistant service pointing to a missing or corrupted executable. You may see an error at sign-in, when the modem is plugged in or when the connection manager opens.
The software was partly removed
Removing files manually, cleaning a drive or uninstalling only part of a carrier package can leave a startup entry or service behind. Windows then tries to launch AssistantServices.exe even though the parent application is gone.

An old modem utility conflicts with current Windows settings
Join Air and similar HSPA tools were designed for older Windows releases and mobile networks. A later Windows update, changed driver model or missing device driver can expose an incompatibility. That does not make the executable a Windows file; it means the legacy utility may no longer integrate correctly.
The filename is being used by unwanted software
A malicious program can choose a familiar-looking name. This is more concerning when the file is outside the modem program directory, starts without a modem installed, creates repeated pop-ups, or is detected by Microsoft Defender.
Windows security or permissions are blocking it
Defender, another security product, file permissions or a damaged profile can prevent the process from starting. A blocked file should be investigated rather than repeatedly allowed, especially when its location is unexpected.
How do I check which AssistantServices.exe is running?
Identify the path and the parent software before changing anything. These checks are read-only and help you choose the correct repair branch.

Select Details; on some Windows versions you may need More details first.
- Find
AssistantServices.exe. Right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, search File Explorer for that exact filename and inspect each result. - Compare the path with the reported Join Air or Mobile Partner directories. A path under
Program Files (x86)is more plausible than a system, temporary or download directory, but path alone is not proof. - Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Join Air, Mobile Partner, a carrier modem manager or the modem manufacturer’s package. In older Windows builds, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties and review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs if present. A missing signature does not automatically mean malware, and a displayed company name is not a substitute for a Defender scan.
- In Task Manager’s Startup apps list, note any entry that points to the same folder. Do not disable random entries merely because their names are unfamiliar; record the path first.
If several copies exist, treat them separately. The copy used by a modem application may be harmless while an unrelated copy in a system directory is not.
How do I fix the error if I still use the modem?
Keep the modem package while troubleshooting connectivity. Repair or reinstall the complete package from the modem manufacturer or carrier’s official source; do not substitute a standalone executable downloaded from a file-sharing or “DLL fix” site.

- Disconnect the modem and close Join Air, Mobile Partner or the carrier connection manager.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features), select the modem package and choose Modify, Repair or Uninstall, depending on what the installer offers. If a repair option is unavailable, uninstall and restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the device maker or carrier’s official support channel. Microsoft recommends official vendor sites or the Microsoft Store rather than repacked installers. Confirm that the package is intended for your Windows edition and modem model.
- Run the installer as an administrator if the vendor’s instructions require it, reconnect the modem when prompted, and restart Windows after setup completes.
- Open the connection manager and test the modem. If the same error returns, note the exact message, the file path and whether the modem appears in Device Manager; those details distinguish an application problem from a hardware or driver problem.
No independent test establishes that a particular Join Air or Mobile Partner installer will work on every current Windows release. A legacy package may remain incompatible even after a clean reinstall, in which case the carrier or manufacturer’s current support guidance is more useful than replacing one executable.
How do I remove AssistantServices.exe when I no longer need the modem?
Uninstall the associated modem manager first. Deleting the executable while its service or startup entry still exists can create a different error and leave an orphaned configuration behind.
- Unplug the modem and close its connection software.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for Join Air, Mobile Partner and any carrier-branded modem manager, then choose Uninstall. If the package is listed only in Control Panel, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows when the uninstaller finishes. This allows the service and startup registration to be removed cleanly.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps and
services.mscfor a leftoverUI Assistantentry. If an entry remains after uninstalling, record its executable path and use the vendor’s removal instructions; do not delete registry values at random. - Search the old program directory. If it contains only remnants and no other application depends on it, remove the leftover folder through File Explorer after confirming the uninstall is complete. Keep a backup until you are certain no needed modem software uses it.
- Run a Defender scan if the file was in an unexpected location or if uninstalling did not explain its presence.
Do not remove a shared-looking executable solely because its name seems unfamiliar. Establish which installed program owns it and whether that program is still required.
What should I do if the file looks suspicious?
Use Microsoft Defender rather than trying to “repair” an unknown copy. A clean-looking filename does not establish legitimacy, and manually launching the file to see what happens can increase risk.
- Save your work and disconnect from untrusted networks if the computer is behaving suspiciously. Do not open the file or approve unexpected elevation prompts.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and choose Check for updates so Defender has current security intelligence.
- Return to Virus & threat protection > Scan options, select Full scan and let it finish. Review the detection name, affected path and recommended action.
- If unwanted software persists or the file cannot be removed while Windows is running, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows will restart and scan before the normal desktop loads, so close applications first.
- Quarantine or remove detections according to Defender’s recommendation. If a file in the verified modem directory is flagged, do not restore it automatically; confirm the detection details with the vendor and reinstall the complete package from an official source if necessary.
- Review recent downloads, email attachments and bundled installers. Microsoft identifies unexpected attachments, cracked software and third-party bundles as common malware routes.
If the alert involves banking, passwords or other sensitive accounts, use a separate trusted device to change credentials after the computer is secured. A scan result is more meaningful when it includes the complete path and detection name, so keep that information for support.
Can SFC or DISM repair AssistantServices.exe?
They can repair damaged Windows components, but they do not validate or replace a ZTE modem executable. File.net lists these commands as general Windows-maintenance options, not as proof that AssistantServices.exe is part of Windows.

- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) from the Start menu.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store. - Then run
sfc /scannow. System File Checker checks protected Windows files and reports whether it repaired any. - Restart Windows and test the modem application again.
If both commands report no integrity violations, the problem is more likely in the modem package, its service registration, a driver or the file itself. A restore point can help roll back a recent software change, but it should not be used to preserve an unknown executable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I choose the right fix?
Use the path and your need for the modem to select one of three practical routes.
| Situation | First action | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| The file is in the Join Air or Mobile Partner folder and you still use the modem | Repair or reinstall the complete modem package from an official source | Deleting the executable or downloading a replacement from an unverified site |
| The file is in the application folder but the modem is retired | Uninstall the parent package, restart and check for leftovers | Deleting files before the uninstaller runs |
| The file is in a Windows, temporary or download directory, or no modem software is installed | Update Defender, run a Full scan and use Defender Offline if needed | Allowing the process, disabling security software or trusting the filename |
| A browser page or caller demands payment or a phone call for an “AssistantServices.exe” fix | Close it and use Windows Security directly | Calling the number, installing remote-control software or paying for an urgent repair |
This approach separates a legitimate but obsolete modem utility from an unrelated process using the same name. It also avoids turning a removable application problem into a damaged Windows installation.

Does AssistantServices.exe run on every Windows computer?
No. It is associated with specific legacy modem-management packages, so a normal Windows installation can operate without it. Its absence is not a sign that Windows is missing a required system file.
Can a Windows update be responsible for the error?
An update can expose an incompatibility in an old modem utility or change how its driver starts, but the update does not establish that the executable is malicious. Check the application path and installed package before rolling back Windows or changing security settings.
Should I download a replacement AssistantServices.exe?
Do not download a lone replacement executable from an unknown site. If the file is genuinely missing from a modem installation, reinstall the complete package from the device maker or carrier so that its service, drivers and supporting files match.

What if the error appears only when I plug in a USB modem?
That timing points toward the modem package, its driver or its startup service rather than a general Windows failure. Note whether the device appears in Device Manager, then repair or reinstall the full modem software before considering broader Windows repairs.
