asushotkey.exe is normally part of ASUS Hotkey software. On an ASUS notebook, it helps the Fn key and F1–F12 shortcuts control features such as brightness, volume, touchpad state, display mode, camera, screenshots, fan mode, sleep, and airplane mode. A copy signed by ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. and installed through an ASUS driver location is consistent with the legitimate component.

Safety is conditional, not automatic. Check the executable’s digital signature and location, then reinstall the exact hotkey package listed for your laptop model through ASUS Support or MyASUS. Do not delete a working copy just because it starts with Windows: removal can disable ASUS shortcut functions. The full manual procedure below covers both a missing or broken hotkey utility and a wider keyboard problem.

What is asushotkey.exe?

asushotkey.exe is the executable used by ASUS Hotkey software on many ASUS notebooks. It works with the keyboard driver and ASUS utility layer so that Fn combinations can trigger hardware and Windows features instead of acting only as ordinary function keys.

It is not a general Windows component. Its presence is normally tied to ASUS notebook software, so a desktop PC or a machine from another manufacturer should not ordinarily need it. On an ASUS laptop, however, the process may load with Windows because the shortcut service needs to be available before you press a function key. A startup entry is therefore not, by itself, evidence of malware or a fault.

ASUS describes its Keyboard Hotkeys software as a way to use the Fn key for quick access to features and to switch between feature controls. The exact set depends on the notebook model. Depending on the machine, the keys can control:

  • Speaker volume and screen brightness
  • Touchpad enable/disable and display mode
  • Camera, screen capture, fan mode, sleep and airplane mode
  • The choice between special hotkey actions and ordinary F1–F12 behavior

Some notebooks switch modes in an ASUS utility; others support Fn+Esc. That shortcut is model-dependent, so its absence does not by itself indicate a damaged file. Likewise, an icon or key marking can differ between product families even when the underlying ASUS package is legitimate.

Is asushotkey.exe safe?

A legitimate copy should identify ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. as its publisher and normally arrive with an ASUS driver package. Those checks are useful evidence, but a signature and path alone cannot prove that every copy is malware-free. An unsigned file, a different publisher, or a copy in an unrelated user-writable folder deserves investigation before you run or delete it.

Do not judge the file only by its name. Malware can use a familiar filename, and an authentic ASUS package can have a path that looks unfamiliar after a Windows driver update. Use the publisher, signature status, installation path, version information and the way you obtained the file together. The safest replacement source is the support page for the exact notebook model, not a standalone executable repository.

Check the publisher and digital signature

  1. Right-click the reported AsusHotkey.exe file and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab. The signer should be ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.; open the signature details and confirm Windows reports that it is valid.
  3. On the Details tab, record the file version and product information. Keep those details with the exact error message for troubleshooting.

If the Digital Signatures tab is missing, the signer is different, or Windows reports an invalid signature, do not download a replacement executable from a random “DLL” or software mirror. Disconnect the questionable file from normal use, scan it with your security software, and obtain a clean package only from the support page for the exact ASUS model.

Do not assume that an unsigned copy is safe simply because the Fn keys still work. Conversely, do not remove a signed copy solely because an antivirus scan or a startup list displays its name. Verify the file that is actually being launched and compare it with the package ASUS provides for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the installation path

Modern ASUS System Control Interface packages can place the executable under a Windows DriverStore directory similar to:

C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositoryasussci2.inf_amd64_...ASUSOptimizationAsusHotkey.exe

The folder suffix and version vary between releases. Older notebooks may instead use the legacy location C:Program FilesAsusAsus Hotkey. Either location can be legitimate when it belongs to an ASUS-installed package. A path such as a temporary folder, a browser-download folder, or an unfamiliar user profile directory is not proof of infection, but it is a strong reason to investigate the signature and reinstall from ASUS.

DriverStore names are generated from the installed package, so two ASUS laptops or two releases on the same laptop may show different asussci2.inf_amd64_... suffixes. Do not treat the changing suffix alone as a problem. The useful comparison is whether the file sits inside an ASUS driver package and carries the expected ASUSTeK signature.

Why do ASUS hotkey errors happen?

There is no single universal ASUS Hotkey package. ASUS states that drivers and utilities differ by model, and a package intended for one notebook can fail on another. Errors commonly follow an incorrect or incomplete package, a Windows or BIOS change, damaged driver files, or a broader keyboard-device problem.

  • Wrong generation of ASUS software: newer systems may require ASUS System Control Interface V2 with MyASUS, while other models use Keyboard Hotkeys Driver (ATK Package) and the ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys utility.
  • Legacy hardware: some older notebooks list only ATKPackage. Its behavior and available controls differ from newer packages.
  • Partial installation: the driver may be present while the companion utility is missing, leaving Fn combinations inactive.
  • Windows, BIOS or driver changes: updates can expose a previously unnoticed compatibility problem or leave the keyboard device in an abnormal state.
  • Physical keyboard failure: if individual keys remain dead after the correct package is installed, the fault may be hardware rather than asushotkey.exe.

A message that names asushotkey.exe does not necessarily mean that executable is the root cause. The utility can report an error when its supporting driver, ASUS system-control interface or keyboard device is missing. That is why replacing only the file, registering a random DLL or copying an executable from another ASUS model is unreliable.

How do I identify the right ASUS hotkey package?

The laptop model, not the filename alone, determines the correct download. Record the full model designation from the label on the chassis, the original box, BIOS information, or Windows Settings > System > About. Also note the Windows edition and version, the exact error text, the file path, and the executable’s version.

Include any regional or sub-model suffix. Two notebooks with similar marketing names can have different support pages and different hotkey packages. If the support page asks you to choose a Windows version, select the version actually installed rather than a package intended for a different release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the support page for that exact model and inspect the Utilities, Keyboard, or Other categories. ASUS may list one of these routes:

Package shown for the model What to install Important limitation
ASUS System Control Interface V2 The listed System Control Interface V2 driver; install MyASUS when ASUS directs you to use it Functions and package releases remain model-specific
ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys Driver (ATK Package) The driver and the ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys utility listed with it Both components may be required for Fn controls
ATKPackage The legacy ATKPackage offered for that notebook ASUS says this legacy option does not support the “Change Hotkey Functions” utility

Do not substitute a package merely because its name contains “ATK” or “Hotkey.” The support page is the authority for that particular notebook generation. If ASUS lists only one of the three routes, that is the route to follow; installing all three can create unnecessary conflicts instead of adding features.

How do I fix an asushotkey.exe error?

Work from the least destructive action to the most invasive. Reinstalling the model-specific ASUS package and restarting Windows resolves many software-side failures without deleting personal files.

1. Record the failure before changing anything

  • Write down the complete ASUS model and Windows version.
  • Copy the exact error wording, including whether it says the file is missing, cannot start, or has stopped working.
  • Record the file path, publisher, signature status and version from Properties.
  • Test whether the problem affects only Fn shortcuts or the entire built-in keyboard.

This distinction determines whether you should concentrate on the hotkey utility or continue into keyboard-device troubleshooting. Note whether the failure began after a Windows update, BIOS update, driver installation or physical event such as a spill; that timeline helps separate software symptoms from hardware symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install the package ASUS lists for your model

  1. Open ASUS Support and select the exact notebook model, including any regional or sub-model suffix.
  2. In the driver download categories, locate System Control Interface V2, Keyboard Hotkeys Driver (ATK Package), or ATKPackage, as applicable.
  3. Download the current package supplied for your Windows version. Do not use a standalone copy of AsusHotkey.exe from a third-party download site.
  4. Run the installer with the permissions it requests and allow it to replace damaged or missing components.

If the support page offers several generations, use the one explicitly associated with your model rather than the newest-looking filename. Keep the downloaded package and its version information until the problem is confirmed fixed; they provide a clear record if ASUS service later needs to reproduce the issue.

3. Use MyASUS when ASUS specifies that route

For systems built around ASUS System Control Interface V2, ASUS may direct you to MyASUS. Install or open MyASUS, select its driver and utility update area, and apply the hotkey or system-control package it offers for the notebook. MyASUS can also provide model-specific driver and utility updates when a manual download is difficult to identify.

MyASUS is not a reason to install an unrelated hotkey utility on an older machine. Follow the product’s support instructions: some models use MyASUS together with System Control Interface V2, while legacy models may continue to use an ATK-based installer.

4. Restart and test the affected shortcuts

Restart Windows after installation; do not rely only on closing the installer. Test the exact Fn or F1–F12 combination that failed, then test a second shortcut such as volume or brightness. If the keys now work but behave as ordinary F1–F12 keys, check the ASUS utility for its hotkey mode or try Fn+Esc only if that model supports the switch.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test both a shortcut that changes hardware state and one that displays an on-screen indicator, if your model provides one. A successful volume test does not prove that every model-specific control, such as fan mode or camera, is available; ASUS exposes different functions on different notebooks.

5. Repair a broader built-in keyboard problem

If many keys are abnormal, continue beyond the hotkey executable:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and the BIOS, chipset and keyboard-related packages listed on the ASUS model support page.
  2. Open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right-click the affected built-in keyboard device and choose Uninstall device. Restart Windows so it can detect and reinstall the device.
  3. Run the Windows keyboard troubleshooter available in your edition of Windows.
  4. Retest the keyboard before changing system settings or removing additional ASUS software.

ASUS places System Restore and a PC reset after these earlier troubleshooting steps. A reset can remove applications and settings, so back up important files and use it only when the official package, device reinstall and basic Windows troubleshooting have failed. A reset is not a substitute for identifying the correct ASUS package, and it should not be the first response to one missing hotkey.

6. Recheck an executable that still reports an error

After reinstalling, inspect the new file’s signature and path again. If the official package installs successfully but the error persists, note the new version and exact message and contact ASUS service with that information. A continued failure after the correct software is installed, especially when particular keys never respond, points toward a hardware diagnosis rather than another random executable download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the distinction clear when contacting support: “Fn brightness does nothing” is a hotkey symptom, while “the built-in keyboard cannot type” is a wider device symptom. Include whether an external USB keyboard works, but do not treat that accessory as proof that the internal keyboard is healthy.

Can I delete AsusHotkey.exe?

Do not delete a functioning, properly signed copy simply because it runs at startup. The process may be responsible for the notebook’s Fn shortcuts, and removing it can disable brightness, volume, touchpad, display and other controls. If you dislike a startup entry, first identify the ASUS utility that owns it and confirm what functionality would be lost before disabling anything.

Deletion is a different decision when the file is unsigned or located in an unrelated directory. Preserve the path and signature details, isolate the file from normal execution, scan it with your security software, and reinstall the official ASUS package. Removing a suspicious file without replacing the legitimate package can leave both the security issue and the keyboard problem unresolved.

There is no need to remove an older-looking path merely because a newer ASUS package uses DriverStore. Older notebooks may legitimately retain the legacy C:Program FilesAsusAsus Hotkey location. Verify the model’s current package and the file’s signature before deciding that a path is obsolete.

What should I do when the Fn keys still do not work?

Use the symptom to choose the next branch rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same file.

Observed symptom Most useful next action
Only ASUS Fn shortcuts fail; ordinary typing works Verify the model-specific hotkey utility and companion driver, then restart and check hotkey mode
Every key on the built-in keyboard behaves abnormally Update ASUS and Windows packages, reinstall the keyboard device in Device Manager, and run the keyboard troubleshooter
The file has no valid ASUSTeK signature or sits in an unrelated path Isolate and scan it, then obtain replacement software from the exact-model ASUS Support page
Keys remain physically unresponsive after the official package is installed Arrange ASUS service or another hardware diagnosis

An external USB keyboard can keep you productive while you troubleshoot, but it is only a temporary workaround and does not repair asushotkey.exe or the notebook’s built-in keyboard. It also cannot restore model-specific Fn overlays, brightness controls or fan shortcuts.

Which repair route is appropriate?

There is no universal “ASUS hotkey fix” that applies to every notebook. The decision depends on the hardware generation, the scope of the failure and the evidence from the file itself.

  • Model-specific ASUS Support or MyASUS: the preferred acquisition path for drivers and utilities.
  • Manual Windows repair: appropriate when the whole keyboard is affected or the device needs to be reinstalled.
  • Security investigation: necessary when publisher, signature or location does not match an ASUS installation.
  • Hardware service: appropriate when correct software leaves individual keys or the entire keyboard physically unresponsive.

A generic product listing or replacement accessory cannot be selected safely without the laptop model and, for an internal keyboard, the exact part number. Hardware accessories do not repair the executable itself. A USB keyboard may be useful as a temporary workaround, but it is not a driver package and does not fix the internal keyboard mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there different AsusHotkey.exe paths on different ASUS laptops?

ASUS has changed its hotkey packaging across notebook generations. Newer System Control Interface installations commonly use DriverStore, while older ATK-based systems may use the Program Files location; package releases also create different folder suffixes and versions.

What if ASUS Support lists only ATKPackage?

Install the legacy package only when it is the option shown for your exact model. Its feature set is narrower: ASUS specifically says it does not provide the “Change Hotkey Functions” utility, so that control should not be expected after installation.

Can a USB keyboard solve an AsusHotkey.exe error?

It can provide temporary typing access while you repair the notebook, but it does not restore Fn shortcuts or repair the built-in keyboard. Continue with the model-specific driver and device checks rather than treating the accessory as a permanent fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information will ASUS service need if reinstalling the driver fails?

Provide the full notebook model, Windows version, exact error text, executable path and version, signature result, and the ASUS package you installed. Also tell them whether the failure affects only shortcut combinations or ordinary keyboard input.

Is an AsusHotkey.exe startup entry automatically dangerous?

No. A properly signed copy installed with an ASUS package may need to start with Windows so Fn shortcuts are available. Check the publisher and path instead of removing it solely because it appears in startup.

Why do my keys work as F1, F2 and F3 instead of changing brightness or volume?

The notebook may be set to ordinary F1–F12 mode. Check the ASUS utility for its hotkey-mode setting, or try Fn+Esc only when ASUS documents that switch for your model.

Should I install every ASUS hotkey package listed online?

No. ASUS uses different packages across notebook generations. Install only the System Control Interface V2, Keyboard Hotkeys Driver (ATK Package), or ATKPackage that ASUS lists for your exact model; combining unrelated packages can leave the utility mismatched.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What does it mean if only one or two physical keys never respond?

If the correct ASUS package is installed and the keys remain physically unresponsive while other shortcuts work, the problem may be hardware. Arrange ASUS service or another hardware diagnosis instead of repeatedly replacing the executable.

The Bottom Line

asushotkey.exe is usually a legitimate ASUS Hotkey component, but verify both its ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. signature and its installation path. Use the exact notebook model’s ASUS Support page or MyASUS to install the listed hotkey package, restart Windows, and then troubleshoot the keyboard device if the failure is broader. Do not delete a working copy or buy a generic accessory as a substitute for model-specific software or hardware service.
