avira.systemspeedup.realtimeoptimizer.exe is the RealTimeOptimizer process installed with Avira System Speedup, a Windows utility that manages startup items, cleans junk and browser traces, edits registry settings, and monitors the system. The name alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. Check its complete path, Avira’s digital signature, how Avira was installed, and the product version before allowing it to run.
There is also a current security reason to update rather than ignore errors. VulnCheck reports that Avira Internet Security versions through 1.1.109.1990 contain CVE-2026-27749 in the System Speedup component; version 1.1.114.3113 is listed as fixed. The practical order is: verify the file, update Avira, repair or reinstall an authentic installation, scan anything inconsistent, and quarantine or uninstall an untrusted or orphaned copy.

What does avira.systemspeedup.realtimeoptimizer.exe do?
The executable is a component of Avira System Speedup rather than a standalone Windows process. Avira describes System Speedup as an optimizer for Windows with tools for startup management, junk-file cleanup, browser-trace cleanup, registry cleaning, and real-time monitoring. Its startup feature displays applications that launch with Windows and lets you postpone or stop programs you do not need.
Avira’s current support listing identifies System Speedup for Windows as version 7.3. That listing is a product version, not proof that every file with this name is authentic. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a damaged installation can leave a legitimate filename in the wrong directory.

What the name tells you—and what it does not
- It identifies the RealTimeOptimizer component associated with System Speedup.
- It does not authenticate the file, establish that it came from Avira, or show that it is current.
- It does not by itself explain high CPU use, crashes, or a missing-file message.
Judge the file using several independent clues: the full location, the publisher signature, whether Avira is installed, the installed version, and the source of the installer.
Is avira.systemspeedup.realtimeoptimizer.exe safe?
It is likely legitimate when Avira was installed through an official product or support route, the executable is inside Avira’s program directory, and Windows shows a valid signature from Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG. A copy in a Downloads folder, a temporary directory, a randomly named folder, or an unrelated system path deserves investigation rather than trust.

Use this authenticity checklist
- Avira System Speedup or Avira Internet Security is currently installed.
- The file’s path is under the Avira installation tree, not a user-writable download or temporary location.
- Properties > Digital Signatures shows Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG and Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- The file version fits the Avira product shown in Settings or the Avira application.
- You obtained Avira from Avira’s installer, updater, or support channel.
One matching clue is not enough. For example, a copied malware file can have a convincing name, while an unsigned file can be a damaged legitimate installation. Treat conflicting clues as a reason to stop the process and scan it.
Does the 2026 vulnerability make the process dangerous?
VulnCheck reports CVE-2026-27749, a high-severity insecure-deserialization issue in the System Speedup component of Avira Internet Security. The advisory lists versions up to 1.1.109.1990 as affected and 1.1.114.3113 as fixed. It says the RealTimeOptimizer process runs with SYSTEM privileges and deserializes data from a file under C:ProgramData without the required safeguards.
This finding does not mean that every installation is being exploited, nor does it prove that the executable on your computer is fake. It does mean that an older Avira Internet Security build should not be left in place simply because the filename looks familiar. Update through Avira before attempting elaborate file-level repairs.

Avira’s current listing shows Avira Security 1.1.115 and System Speedup 7.3 for Windows. Product labels and availability can vary by edition and update channel, so compare the version displayed in your installation with Avira’s current support listing rather than assuming that a number applies to every Avira product.
An earlier issue is separate
Trend Micro ZDI reported CVE-2023-51636, a local privilege-escalation vulnerability in Avira Prime with a CVSS score of 7.8. The report says it was fixed in Speedup 6.27.19. This older issue is distinct from CVE-2026-27749, but it reinforces the need to keep the component updated.
Why does avira.systemspeedup.realtimeoptimizer.exe show an error?
Most messages fall into a small number of categories. Identifying the category prevents you from deleting a file that only needs repair.
Damaged or incomplete installation
A failed update, interrupted uninstall, disk error, or incorrect permissions can remove a dependency while leaving the executable or its service entry behind. Typical messages mention that the application cannot start, a DLL is missing, or the process stopped working.
Outdated software
An old build may fail after a Windows update, conflict with a newer Avira service, or remain exposed to a documented vulnerability. Version mismatches are especially likely when Avira products were updated separately.
Wrong-path or orphaned copy
If Avira was removed but the executable remains in a startup entry, scheduled task, or service, Windows can report an error at logon. A copy outside the Avira tree may be an abandoned installer or an impersonation.

Security software or file tampering
Defender or another security product can block a changed file, while malware can replace a legitimate executable or launch a similarly named one. An invalid signature, unexpected parent process, or network activity that does not fit Avira’s role increases concern.
Resource contention
Real-time monitoring and cleanup can briefly use CPU, memory, disk, or file-system access. Persistent high usage may indicate a loop, a damaged database, an update operation that is stuck, or interference from another optimizer. Do not assume that high usage proves infection.
How do I verify the file before changing it?
Record evidence first. This gives you a way to reverse a decision and helps Avira or an administrator diagnose the problem.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details tab, locate
avira.systemspeedup.realtimeoptimizer.exe. If it is not running, continue with the copy named in the error message. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path into a note. Do not rely on the shortened name shown in Task Manager.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and record the Details tab’s product and file version.
- Open Digital Signatures. Select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not a diagnosis by itself.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for Avira products and note their names and versions. Also record the exact error text and when it appears.
- In Task Manager’s Details view, check the process’s Properties or Analyze wait chain options if available. Note whether another unexpected program launches it.
Keep the original file and logs if the computer belongs to an employer, school, or regulated environment. Do not upload confidential files to an analysis service without approval.
How do I update Avira safely?
- Open the installed Avira application and use its built-in update command. If the application will not open, use Avira’s official support or download route from another trusted browser session.
- Allow the updater to replace the complete product rather than copying a replacement executable from a mirror or a “DLL download” site.
- Restart Windows after the update. A reboot reloads services, scheduled tasks, and updated libraries and distinguishes a stale service state from a continuing fault.
- Check the installed version again. Compare it with Avira’s current listing for your edition; do not treat the System Speedup 7.3 listing as the version of every Avira security product.
- Retest the action that produced the error, such as signing in, opening System Speedup, or allowing real-time monitoring to start.
If the update fails repeatedly, save the installer or updater error code and proceed to repair or reinstall. Do not disable Windows security controls merely to force an update.

Use repair or reinstall when the path and signature are consistent with Avira but the process is missing, crashes, or reports missing dependencies.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the relevant Avira product, and look for Modify, Repair, or the product’s own maintenance option. The label differs by Windows edition and Avira package.
- Run the vendor repair operation and restart when prompted. Repair may restore services and libraries while preserving some settings.
- If repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the affected Avira product from the same Apps page, restart, and install a fresh package obtained through Avira’s official route.
- After reinstalling, check the signature and version again, then reproduce the original action.
Do not download an individual executable or DLL to replace a missing component. Mixing files from different Avira releases can create a second version conflict and can remove the evidence needed to determine what failed.
How should I scan a suspicious copy?
Scan when the path, signature, source, or behavior is inconsistent, or when Avira was never installed on the computer.
- In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and run a Full scan. A full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan.
- If the process returns after being stopped, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area. Windows restarts into a trusted scanning environment before normal startup programs load.
- Do not launch the questionable file again while you are collecting evidence. If necessary, disconnect the computer from untrusted networks, following your organization’s incident procedure.
- Submit the file or URL through Avira’s Virus Lab route when you need a vendor assessment. Avira says submissions can be analyzed and that findings may inform later virus-database updates.
- Preserve the file’s path, hash if your administrator requests one, Defender detection name, and timestamps. Quarantine rather than permanently deleting evidence when an incident response team may need it.
A historical 2018 ANY.RUN sandbox report recorded task-scheduler activity, autorun changes, certificate-setting changes, and other executable loads from an Avira System Speedup installer. That report describes installer behavior at that time; it is not proof that the current RealTimeOptimizer component is malware.

Yes, but choose the least destructive option that matches your goal. Ending the task in Task Manager is temporary and may not prevent the service or scheduled task from starting again.

To disable monitoring temporarily
Use the real-time monitoring or startup controls inside the Avira application when those controls are available. If the interface is unavailable, you can end the process from Task Manager for a test, but record the result and restart Windows afterward. Do not delete a service, scheduled task, or registry entry merely because its name contains “RealTimeOptimizer.”
To remove an unwanted installation
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall Avira System Speedup or the parent Avira product. Restart, then check Task Manager and the startup list for leftovers. If an orphaned file remains, quarantine it first and scan it; manual deletion should be the final step after you have confirmed that no required Avira product still uses it.

What should I do when the process uses too much CPU or disk?
- Wait several minutes after an update or cleanup starts; a one-time scan can be more active than an idle process.
- In Task Manager, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk, and note whether usage is constant or occurs only during startup or cleanup.
- Restart Windows and test with other optimizer or cleanup applications closed. Two programs inspecting the same files can create contention.
- Update Avira before changing advanced settings. An old component can behave differently from the current release.
- If usage persists, use Avira’s repair option, then run a full Defender scan if the path or signature is questionable.
- Uninstall System Speedup if you do not need its features and the process remains unstable after a supported repair.
Do not promise a particular performance gain from removing temporary files or disabling an optimizer. The effect depends on the workload, storage device, Windows configuration, and which component is actually consuming resources.
When should I quarantine or uninstall immediately?

- The path is a download, temporary, profile, or unrelated system directory.
- Avira is not installed, or the file remains after every Avira product was removed.
- The installer came from a file-sharing site, software bundle, crack, or unsolicited message.
- The process launches from an unexpected parent program, creates unrelated persistence, or triggers a Defender detection.
Quarantine preserves the option to restore a false positive. If the computer is managed, contact the administrator before deleting files or changing security software.
