BackupFP.exe is the “Backup Functional Process” executable used by several third-party Backup Manager products. It is not a Windows system component. A commonly reported legitimate copy is installed in C:Program FilesBackup Manager, often started by ProcessController.exe, but the filename alone does not prove that a file is safe because KPN Back-up Online, IASO, MXB, Managed Online Backup, and Backup & Recovery builds have all used it.
To judge a copy, verify its full path, owning product, digital signature, version details, and scan result. If BackupFP.exe crashes, capture that evidence first, read the product log, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and then repair or reinstall the owning Backup Manager rather than downloading a replacement executable. Delete the file only after its software has been uninstalled or a security investigation has confirmed that it is malicious.

What is backupfp.exe?
BackupFP.exe stands for “Backup Functional Process.” It is a component of third-party backup software, not a file supplied as part of the Windows core operating system. Backup Manager products use it to perform part of their backup workflow, so its presence can be normal on a computer that has backup software installed by an individual, an employer, an IT provider, or a managed-service company.
One commonly reported legitimate location is C:Program FilesBackup Manager. EchoTrail observations place executions in that folder and identify ProcessController.exe as the usual parent process. A path that matches an installed Backup Manager is more reassuring than a copy in a temporary or user-profile directory, but location is only one part of the check.

The same filename has appeared in several products and releases, including KPN Back-up Online, IASO, MXB, Managed Online Backup, and Backup & Recovery. Those builds have different versions, file sizes, and hashes. There is therefore no single “correct” hash or version that can authenticate every file named BackupFP.exe.
Is backupfp.exe safe or a virus?
It can be legitimate, but you must verify the particular file on your computer. Malware can copy a familiar filename, and a valid-looking name does not establish ownership. Use this sequence before allowing an unknown process to continue running or deleting it.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the file location. In Task Manager, right-click the BackupFP.exe process and choose Open file location. Compare the resulting folder with the Backup Manager installation shown in Installed apps or Programs and Features.
C:Program FilesBackup Manageris a normal location in published records; a user-profile, downloads, or temporary folder needs further investigation. - Check the signer. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer and signature status. One listed build identifies MXB as the company and SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC as the digital signer. The signer should make sense for the software deployed on your computer. A valid signature is reassuring, not proof that every copy with this name is safe.
- Read the file details. In Properties > Details, record Product name, Company, Original filename, and the version. Compare those fields with the backup product named in your installed software list or by your provider. Do not reject a file merely because its hash differs from an online example; multiple products and releases use this filename.
- Run a current full scan. Microsoft documents a full Defender scan through
MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 2. Open an elevated Command Prompt in the Microsoft Defender platform directory (or the documented Program Files location) and run that command. Let the scan finish before replacing or deleting the executable. - Assess the surrounding software. If the computer has no known Backup Manager, no matching service, and no administrator who installed one, treat the file as suspicious. Do not launch it manually or upload it to an untrusted “DLL fix” site while you are still establishing ownership.
A herdProtect record for one older IASO build showed zero detections from 68 scanners on September 29, 2026. That result applies only to that specific hash and analysis date; it cannot certify other versions or copies of BackupFP.exe.
Which backup products use the BackupFP.exe filename?
The filename is shared across products, which is why path and metadata matter more than a filename search.
| Product or product family recorded with the name | What that means for your check |
|---|---|
| KPN Back-up Online | Confirm that the installed backup client belongs to this product before judging the executable. |
| IASO | Use the file’s own version, signer, and hash; an IASO build is not interchangeable with another vendor’s build. |
| MXB | MXB-related installations commonly use the Backup Manager folder and MXB data directory. |
| Managed Online Backup | The software may have been deployed and controlled by an administrator or service provider. |
| Backup & Recovery builds | Different releases can have different sizes and hashes even when the filename is identical. |
Why does Backup Functional Process keep crashing?
Reported messages include “backupfp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close,” memory-read or memory-write application errors, “Backup Functional Process has stopped working,” “not a valid Win32 application,” and initialization failures. The practical cause depends on the exact path, product version, and event-log entry.
- Missing or moved file: an incomplete cleanup, disk problem, or security action can leave a service pointing to a file that is no longer where the product expects it.
- Corruption: a damaged executable or supporting file can produce initialization and memory errors.
- Invalid application reference: a stale service, shortcut, or registry entry may call a removed installation.
- Incomplete installation or update: the process and its dependencies may be from different releases.
- Software conflict: another security, backup, or system utility can interfere with the process.
- Malware damage or impersonation: a malicious copy, or damage caused by malware, can mimic a normal BackupFP.exe failure.
“Not a valid Win32 application” is especially useful evidence: it can indicate a corrupted or mismatched binary, so downloading an identically named file from a generic mirror is unsafe and often makes the installation less consistent.

How do I diagnose a backupfp.exe error before repairing it?
Collect evidence before changing files. The information below lets you distinguish a broken backup installation from an unrelated or malicious executable.
- Record the complete path. Copy the path shown by Task Manager’s Open file location, including the drive letter and every folder.
- Record identity information. Note the signer, signature status, Product name, Company, Original filename, and version from the file’s Properties dialog.
- Copy the exact error text. Include whether the message appeared during startup, while a backup was running, or after an update. Similar-looking memory errors can have different causes.
- Check Windows event information. Open Event Viewer and review Windows Logs > Application around the failure time. The faulting module, exception code, and application path can show whether the failure is in BackupFP.exe or a dependency.
- Read the product log. For N-able Backup Manager installations on Windows 7 and later, BackupFP logs are stored at
C:ProgramDataMXBBackup ManagerlogsBackupFP. Older Windows versions use an Application Data location instead. Preserve the original files for your administrator or provider. - Identify management ownership. If the computer belongs to a business or a managed backup service, contact the administrator before uninstalling, cleaning folders, or stopping services. Removing a managed client can interrupt retention, monitoring, or scheduled jobs.
How do I fix backupfp.exe application errors?
Follow these steps in order. They prioritize evidence and security, then use the owning product’s removal and installation process.
1. Confirm which product owns the process
Use Installed apps, Programs and Features, the file’s Details tab, and the digital signature together. If the path is C:Program FilesBackup Manager and the metadata matches a deployed backup product, repair that product instead of treating BackupFP.exe as a standalone Windows file. If no owner is visible, continue with the security scan and ask the device administrator or provider to identify it.
2. Preserve logs and configuration
Copy the BackupFP log folder and note the last successful backup before uninstalling anything. A managed provider may need those records to restore the correct tenant, schedule, or repository settings. Do not remove C:ProgramDataMXB until you know whether the installation or support process needs its configuration.

Use an elevated Command Prompt and run MpCmdRun.exe -Scan -ScanType 2 from the Defender platform directory or the documented Program Files location. If Defender identifies the file as malicious, follow its remediation instructions and your organization’s incident procedure. Do not restore a quarantined executable merely because its filename looks familiar.
4. Uninstall through Windows
N-able’s documented route is Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program → Backup Manager → Uninstall/Change. This removes the Backup Manager application and its installation folder. Related data can remain under C:ProgramDataMXB, so do not assume that uninstalling the program has erased every backup setting or log.

“You can uninstall the Backup Manager from your Windows computer through the Control Panel.” — N-able Windows guide
5. Use the managed-deployment removal method only when appropriate
If the normal uninstall entry is missing or the computer is managed, N-able documents a silent-removal approach. In Registry Editor, read the QuietUninstallString value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstallBackup Manager. Copy the command, run it as administrator, and then confirm that the Backup Manager folder and Backup Management Service are gone. Editing the registry or removing a managed service without authorization can break the provider’s deployment, so ask the administrator to perform this step when the device is controlled by an organization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Clean up only after the uninstall completes
N-able’s troubleshooting procedure includes removing remaining Backup Manager and MXB folders after uninstall, clearing Windows temporary files, and running the installer as administrator. Perform those cleanup actions only after preserving logs and configuration and confirming that the old service has stopped. If the installation requires a particular Visual C++ redistributable, install the version specified by the current provider package rather than downloading an arbitrary runtime or DLL.
7. Reinstall from the vendor or provider
Obtain the current installer from the backup vendor, your contracted provider, or your organization’s software portal. Do not use a generic executable mirror. Run the installer with administrator rights, allow it to recreate the service and folders, and verify that the new file’s path, signer, product name, and version match the package you were given.
8. Test the result
Start a controlled backup or use the product’s built-in test function, then review the BackupFP log and Windows Application events. Confirm that the Backup Management Service remains running, the scheduled job completes, and the error does not return after a restart. If the same failure recurs, provide support with the original error text, event details, file identity, and preserved logs rather than repeatedly deleting and reinstalling files.
Can I delete backupfp.exe?
Do not delete it while the owning Backup Manager is installed or while a backup job depends on it. Manual deletion can leave a service or scheduled task pointing at a missing file and can prevent restores or future backups. The safe choices are to uninstall the owning product through Windows, or to let your security software quarantine a copy that has been confirmed as malicious.

If you find BackupFP.exe outside the expected installation directory, first document the path and metadata, run the full Defender scan, and check whether an administrator deployed a second backup client. Delete or quarantine the file only after that investigation identifies it as unwanted. If the file belongs to a managed installation, obtain approval before changing it.
Where is the BackupFP log file?
For N-able Backup Manager on Windows 7 and later, look in C:ProgramDataMXBBackup ManagerlogsBackupFP. The folder may be hidden because ProgramData is not normally shown in File Explorer; paste the path into the address bar or enable hidden items. Older Windows releases use an Application Data path instead, so the exact location depends on the operating system and product generation.
Logs are most useful when paired with the executable’s full path, product version, timestamp of the failure, and the Windows Application event. Keep the original files unchanged when sending them to a provider, because renaming or editing them can remove context needed to match a failed job with a service event.

The process crashes after a backup-software update
Record the new version and compare it with the previous installation. Read the BackupFP log and Application events, then use the product’s uninstall and reinstall procedure so all components come from one release. A partial update can leave an executable, service, or runtime dependency out of sync.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The file is in a temporary or user-profile folder
Do not assume that it is the legitimate Backup Manager component. Disconnecting a business device from its backup schedule may have operational consequences, so preserve the path and run Defender first. Ask the administrator or provider whether a deployment tool intentionally staged the file; otherwise follow your security team’s quarantine process.
The uninstall entry is missing
Check whether the installation is managed and consult the QuietUninstallString value described above. Do not improvise registry deletions or remove services by hand before capturing logs and configuration. A provider can supply the correct removal command and reinstall package.

The error says the file is not a valid Win32 application
Treat that message as a possible corruption or architecture mismatch. Scan the file, confirm its signer and version, and reinstall the complete Backup Manager package. Replacing only BackupFP.exe with a file from an online mirror can create a second mismatch and introduces a tampering risk.
How can I prevent the error from returning?
- Keep the backup client updated through its vendor or managed provider rather than mixing files from different releases.
- Maintain enough free disk space for temporary backup operations and log creation.
- Do not terminate BackupFP.exe during an active backup unless the administrator or provider directs you to do so.
- Keep Microsoft Defender current and investigate detections by path and hash, not by filename alone.
- Retain recent logs and the last known-good backup record so a future failure can be compared with a working run.
- After reinstalling, perform a test backup and, where the product supports it, a test restore; a process that starts without an error is not proof that stored data can be recovered.
If you want an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows problems, damaged system elements, invalid redirects, and shared-DLL issues, while also offering cleanup and crash logging. It complements antivirus rather than replacing it; results vary, no utility repairs every crash, and its free trial lasts by category for at least two days before a subscription.
FAQ
Is BackupFP.exe required for Windows itself?
No. Windows does not need BackupFP.exe to boot as a core operating-system component. It may be required for a separately installed Backup Manager, so removing it can still disable that product’s scheduled backups.
Can I have more than one BackupFP.exe on the same PC?
Yes, different backup products or old installations can leave copies with the same filename. Compare each copy’s owner, path, signer, and service rather than assuming that the newest-looking file is the active one.
Will reinstalling the Visual C++ redistributable fix every crash?
No. A missing or damaged runtime can cause initialization failures, but many errors come from corruption, stale references, conflicts, or an unrelated executable. Install only the redistributable specified by the current backup package and use the log to confirm that a runtime dependency is involved.
What if a security scan finds no threat but the process still fails?
A clean scan does not rule out a broken installation or incompatible build. Use the path, version, event details, and BackupFP log to guide an uninstall and reinstall, and provide those records to the backup provider if the failure continues.
