bad_module_info is usually a Windows Error Reporting label attached to an application crash, not a program, DLL, virus name, or diagnosis. It can appear when a game freezes or closes, but the same label is also used for unrelated applications. Because the label does not identify one damaged file, the reliable fix is to inspect the surrounding crash record, then work through updates, driver and startup-conflict tests, device checks, Windows component repair, and finally an application repair or reinstall.
Do not download a file called bad_module_info.dll or delete system files because this text appeared. The useful clues are the affected game’s path, exception code, faulting module, timing, and whether other programs fail too.

In Windows Error Reporting (WER), it can be shown as the application name for an APPCRASH event even when the actual game or program is listed elsewhere in the record. A Microsoft Q&A example shows Application Name: bad_module_info, version 0.0.0.0, Fault Module Name: StackHash_0000, and a fault-module version of 0.0.0.0. Another report uses StackHash_2beb and an unknown fault module. Those fields describe a crash-report bucket; they do not name a file you can safely replace.
The label has been reported with games and with other applications. A 2026 explanation from GeekChamp Team puts the distinction plainly: “Bad_Module_Info is a Windows crash label, not a diagnosis.” The same message can therefore result from different games, drivers, Windows components, or stability problems. What does StackHash_0000 mean?
A StackHash_ value is a generic signature Windows uses when it cannot provide a normal, useful faulting-module name. StackHash_0000 does not mean that a file with that name is installed, missing, or corrupt. It also does not prove that the application itself is at fault; the crash may involve a graphics driver, another device driver, Windows, or software that hooks into the game.
Why are the version and path often meaningless?

Is bad_module_info a virus or malware?
The label itself is not presented in the available Microsoft reports or current troubleshooting guidance as malware. That does not certify every file on the computer as safe: the affected game’s publisher, the download source, and any unexpected executable still need to be verified.

Timing is a valuable clue. A failure that begins immediately after a graphics-driver, Windows, game, launcher, or overlay change should be tested against that change. A named module such as a display driver is more actionable than StackHash_0000, but it still needs to be considered alongside the failure mode and reproducibility.

How should I collect evidence before changing anything?
Record the event while it is fresh. A precise record prevents you from replacing unrelated files and gives a game developer, hardware vendor, or technician something they can analyze.
- Write down the scope. Note the game or application, the Windows edition, whether one title or several programs fail, and whether the symptom is a close, freeze, black screen, restart, or blue screen.
- Open Reliability Monitor. Search Windows for View reliability history, open the result, select the red failure at the matching time, and open the technical details. Copy the application name, faulting module, exception code, and report time.
- Check Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs and Application, and locate the error at the same time. The event may contain a process path or module name that the brief popup did not show.

How do I fix bad_module_info errors on Windows?

A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. Use it to isolate overlay, injector, monitoring, RGB, capture, launcher, and other background conflicts. Disable nonessential startup items and services temporarily, restart, and run the affected game. If stability returns, re-enable items in small groups until the conflicting component is identified. Restore normal startup settings after testing so you do not leave unrelated software disabled.
4. Check Device Manager and available disk space
Open Device Manager and look for warning icons. For a device with a warning, review its status, update its driver, or temporarily disable or uninstall it only when you understand what function it provides. Reboot and test after each meaningful change instead of changing several devices at once.
Check free space on the Windows system drive and the drive that holds the game. What should I not do?
- Do not search for a “bad_module_info.dll.” The reports do not identify such a repairable file.
- Do not delete system files or edit the registry based on the label alone. A generic crash bucket cannot justify a destructive change.
