BASupSrvcUpdater.exe is normally an updater service for N-able Take Control, a remote-support agent formerly distributed as N-central, BeAnywhere Support Express, or MSP Anywhere. It continuously watches the BASupSrvc service and updates it when required. The file is not part of Windows itself, so safety depends on whether an authorized N-able installation exists on your PC, whether the file is in the expected program folder, and whether its digital signature is valid. Do not delete it simply because the name is unfamiliar. Verify the installation first, then repair connectivity, logs, or the Take Control component using the steps below.
What is BASupSrvcUpdater.exe?
BASupSrvcUpdater.exe is the service component that keeps the BASupSrvc remote-support service installed and running. N-able describes it as a continuously running service that “watches and updates the BASupSrvc service.” A related description says it updates the BASupSrv service when required and ensures that it is always running.

You may encounter the executable on systems using N-able Take Control, or on older deployments branded N-central, BeAnywhere Support Express, or MSP Anywhere. Legacy service records associate it with the Windows service name BASupportExpressSrvcUpdater and a folder named BeAnywhere Support ExpressGetSupportService. Current installations can use different product and directory names, so the filename alone cannot identify the exact version.
This is not a Windows system file. Its legitimacy depends on authorization: an employer, school, managed-service provider, or support technician may have installed the remote-support agent deliberately. On an unmanaged personal computer, an unexpected copy deserves a closer inspection before it is allowed to keep running.

Is BASupSrvcUpdater.exe safe or a virus?
It can be legitimate, but no one can classify a particular copy from its filename alone. Check the file path, the Windows service registration, and the digital signature together. A path or signer that does not match an N-able installation is a warning sign, not automatic proof of malware.
1. Locate the running file
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Details tab, find
BASupSrvcUpdater.exe. If it is not visible, check the Processes tab for a Take Control or BeAnywhere-related entry. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before closing the window.
A normal installation should be inside an N-able/Take Control, BeAnywhere Support Express, or GetSupportService directory. The documented legacy location is under the BeAnywhere Support Express service folder. A copy launched from a user profile, a temporary folder, or an unrelated Windows directory should be investigated rather than trusted.
2. Check the digital signature
- Right-click the executable in File Explorer and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures, select the listed signature, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is consistent with the N-able product installed on the computer.
A missing, invalid, or unrelated signature increases the risk, but it is not conclusive by itself. A legitimate legacy installation can have a different product label than a current Take Control deployment, so compare the signer with your organization’s software inventory.
3. Inspect the registered service
- Press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Look for
BASupportExpressSrvcUpdateror a current Take Control updater service. - Open Properties and inspect Path to executable. It should point to the same installation family and location you found in Task Manager.
Do not stop, disable, or remove a managed agent until the person or organization responsible for the PC confirms that remote support is no longer required. Removing it can interrupt authorized troubleshooting or administration.
4. Scan when the evidence does not match
Update Microsoft Defender, then run a full scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If the process persists, cannot be removed, or behaves inconsistently with the path and signature, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same menu. Microsoft also documents the PowerShell command:

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does BASupSrvcUpdater.exe use network access or CPU?
The updater must contact N-able infrastructure to obtain agent updates and keep the remote-support service available. N-able documents outbound TCP port 443 and TCP 3377 as a fallback, along with a set of required N-able domains. A firewall, proxy, DNS filter, or endpoint-security rule that blocks those destinations can cause update, connection, or heartbeat failures.
A short burst of network or CPU activity while the agent checks its service or applies an update is consistent with its purpose. Sustained high usage, repeated retries, or activity from an unexpected path is not explained by the filename alone. Note the time and duration, then correlate it with the service status and the Take Control logs before changing files.
How do I fix BASupSrvcUpdater.exe errors on Windows?
Use this order: capture the exact error, verify connectivity, read the logs, repair the affected Take Control component, and only then consider an authorized uninstall. These steps preserve useful evidence and avoid breaking a managed installation.
Step 1: Capture the exact symptom
- Write down the complete message, including any error code, and whether it appears at startup, during a remote session, or while Windows is idle.
- Record the executable path, service name, signer, and the time the failure occurred.
- Note whether the problem affects only remote control or also causes repeated service restarts, dialog boxes, or login failures.
Do not replace or rename the executable before collecting this information. A generic “application error” can have a different fix from a blocked-update or missing-component error.

Step 2: Test outbound connectivity and security software
- Confirm that the PC has working internet access without a captive portal or interrupted VPN session.
- Ask the network administrator to verify that outbound TCP 443 is permitted and that TCP 3377 is available as the documented fallback.
- Check firewall, proxy, DNS-filtering, and endpoint-security logs for a rule that blocks the N-able domains required by Take Control.
- If a rule was recently added, have the administrator create an exception for the authorized Take Control installation rather than disabling protection globally.
On a managed network, only the administrator should change these rules. A local Windows firewall change cannot correct a block imposed by a corporate proxy or DNS service.
Step 3: Review the Take Control logs
N-able documents Windows agent logs in these locations:
C:ProgramDataGetSupportService_LOGICnowLogsC:ProgramDataGetSupportService_Common_LOGICnowLogs
Viewer logs are stored in the user’s Take Control Viewer profile. Open the newest files around the time of the failure and search for connection, update, permission, or service-start errors. Preserve a copy for the IT provider instead of deleting old logs; the sequence of retries often identifies whether the fault is local or network-related.
Step 4: Repair a damaged viewer component
If the error specifically names a missing or corrupt Take Control viewer module, use N-able’s documented repair sequence:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Uninstall the existing Take Control viewer through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows versions).
- After uninstalling, check for a leftover viewer folder and remove that leftover folder only if the uninstaller has finished and the folder is clearly part of the viewer.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it, or if files remain locked.
- Reinstall the viewer from the organization’s N-central console or approved Take Control source.
This procedure addresses the viewer module; it is not a reason to delete BASupSrvcUpdater.exe from an active managed agent.

Step 5: Check service permissions and startup state
- In
services.msc, open the Take Control updater service properties. - Confirm that the service is not permanently set to Disabled by a local policy.
- Use Start or Restart only when your administrator has authorized the action and the executable path and signature have already been verified.
- Recheck the event or application after the service starts, then compare the new timestamp with the logs.
If the service stops again immediately, do not keep restarting it. The logs, network policy, or a damaged installation need attention.
Step 6: Scan if the installation is inconsistent
When the file is unsigned, stored in an unrelated directory, or accompanied by other suspicious behavior, run a current Microsoft Defender full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when a persistent process survives normal cleanup. A clean scan does not establish that an unauthorized remote-support agent belongs on the computer; authorization and installation provenance still need to be confirmed.
Can I delete BASupSrvcUpdater.exe?
Do not delete the executable manually. The updater is part of the Take Control service chain, and removing one file can leave a broken service, orphaned startup entries, or an agent that no longer updates correctly.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should automatic Take Control updates be blocked?
Take Control allows administrators to block automatic agent updates, but N-able recommends doing so only for a specific audit, security, or compliance requirement. Blocking updates can prevent the agent from receiving maintenance that the service expects. If a policy requires a freeze, document the approved version, the exception owner, and the date when updates will be reviewed again.

What should an IT team compare when evaluating remote-support agents?
Filenames are a poor basis for comparing products. Use operational and ownership criteria that can be verified on the endpoint:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Vendor identity and signing | Who signs the binaries, and does the signature match the approved product record? |
| Unattended-service behavior | Which Windows services run continuously, under which account, and for what support scenarios? |
| Network endpoints and ports | Which domains must be reachable, and which outbound ports are required or used as fallback? |
| Update controls | Can updates be scheduled or blocked, and who approves exceptions? |
| Logging | Where are agent, viewer, and update logs stored, and how long are they retained? |
| Uninstall protection | Can a local user remove the agent, or does an administrator need to authorize removal? |
| Device authorization | Is the software documented in the device owner’s inventory and support policy? |
What information is needed for a machine-specific diagnosis?
A definitive diagnosis requires details that vary by installation and Windows edition. Gather the following before contacting the software administrator or support provider:
- The full executable path copied from Task Manager.
- The signer name and whether Windows reports the signature as valid.
- The registered service name and its Path to executable.
- The installed N-able product name and version, if shown in Installed apps.
- The exact error text, time of failure, and whether the issue is intermittent.
- Relevant files from both documented log directories and the Take Control Viewer profile.
- Firewall, proxy, DNS-filter, or endpoint-security events covering the same time.
Those details distinguish a normal but unreachable agent, a damaged Take Control component, an intentionally retired installation, and an executable that is impersonating the legitimate filename.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes cleanup, vulnerability checks, real-time boost, file-shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a subscription, and results vary— it complements antivirus software and no tool repairs every crash.
What are the most common mistakes to avoid?
- Trusting the filename: malware can copy a legitimate name, while legitimate legacy deployments can use older folder names.
- Deleting the file first: this can break the service and remove evidence needed for diagnosis.
- Disabling all security controls: troubleshoot the specific firewall or endpoint rule instead of turning protection off globally.
- Blocking updates without a policy: a frozen agent can drift from the version expected by the support platform.
- Ignoring authorization: a correctly signed agent can still be unwanted on a personal computer or outside an organization’s support policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a reliable “safe percentage” for BASupSrvcUpdater.exe?
No authoritative prevalence or safety-percentage statistic establishes that every copy is harmless. Treat each installation as a separate case and verify its path, signer, service registration, and authorization.
Can a file hash prove that this executable is legitimate?
A hash can identify whether two files are identical, which helps an administrator compare a copy with an approved build. It cannot prove that the file was authorized on your computer or that the surrounding installation has not been altered.
What if BASupSrvcUpdater.exe comes back after I uninstall Take Control?
A managed policy, remote-management script, or support technician may be reinstalling it. Contact the organization that administers the device and ask them to remove the deployment assignment instead of repeatedly deleting the executable.
Should I send the executable to a security service for analysis?
Ask your IT or security administrator first, because remote-support binaries may be proprietary and could contain installation metadata. Provide the path, signature details, logs, and Defender results through the organization’s approved incident process.
