bcmwltry.exe is usually the Broadcom Wireless Network Tray Applet installed with Dell/Broadcom Wi-Fi hardware. It is not a core Windows process. A correctly installed, digitally signed copy can be harmless, but malware can use the same filename. Before deleting anything, verify the file path, signer, installed WLAN package and Microsoft Defender results. Most bcmwltry.exe crashes, missing-file messages and wireless failures are handled by identifying the adapter, reinstalling the computer maker’s driver, resetting networking when necessary, and repairing Windows components with DISM followed by SFC.
What is bcmwltry.exe?
bcmwltry.exe is the executable for a Broadcom wireless LAN tray or configuration utility commonly bundled with older Dell systems. Dell’s DW WLAN Card documentation describes a physical wireless card and software used to configure wireless networks and adapter properties. That is why the process may appear in Task Manager or in the Startup tab on an older Dell laptop or desktop.

The utility is separate from the Windows kernel and is not required as a generic Windows component. It provides the manufacturer’s user interface and background integration for a supported Broadcom adapter. Windows may still be able to connect to Wi-Fi when the tray interface is disabled, but you can lose vendor-specific configuration controls.
BleepingComputer identifies the related WLTRAY startup entry as a valid Broadcom network-adapter configuration program and notes that automatic startup is optional. That historical startup guidance does not prove that every file named bcmwltry.exe is legitimate; the particular file on your computer still needs to be checked.

Is bcmwltry.exe safe?
Safety is conditional, not determined by the filename alone. A genuine copy should fit an installed Dell/Broadcom WLAN package, have plausible company and product metadata, carry a verifiable digital signature, and pass a current Microsoft Defender scan. A copy in an unexpected location, with a mismatched signer or no relationship to the wireless hardware, deserves investigation.
Check the file that is actually running
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager and select the Details tab. Locate bcmwltry.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Record the complete path before closing the window. Legacy Dell documentation places WLAN components in
System32, while newer OEM packages can use a vendor folder underProgram Files. A path by itself is not proof of safety, so do not approve or reject the file on location alone. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures and Details tabs. Look for a signer and product information that match the installed Dell/Broadcom wireless package. An unverifiable, damaged or unrelated signature is a warning.
Scan for a copied filename
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, update security intelligence, and run a Full scan. If unwanted software continues to return or the file cannot be removed normally, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan; it checks before the normal Windows session starts. A clean scan is useful evidence, but it should be considered with the path, signature and installed driver rather than treated as the only identity check.
Recommended Free Tools
Compare it with the installed WLAN software
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Control Panel → Programs and Features on older Windows) and look for a Dell or Broadcom wireless package. In Device Manager → Network adapters, confirm that a Broadcom or Dell wireless device is present. If there is no matching adapter or package, do not assume that a similarly named executable belongs to your system.
Should I delete bcmwltry.exe?
Do not delete it as a first step. Removing the executable can break the wireless-management package and turn a manageable startup problem into a missing-file or connection problem. First establish whether the file is legitimate and whether Windows or another utility already manages the adapter.
| Choice | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep it enabled | The adapter works and the tray utility supplies configuration controls you use. | A legacy startup component remains loaded. |
| Disable startup | Windows manages Wi-Fi correctly and you only want to remove the tray interface. | OEM configuration controls may disappear; verify connectivity after restarting. |
| Uninstall and reinstall the driver package | Crashes, missing DLL messages or Device Manager codes indicate damaged driver software. | You need the exact OEM package and may temporarily lose wireless access. |
| Replace the WLAN card | A physical card failure or unsupported legacy adapter has been confirmed. | The replacement must match the model, slot, antenna arrangement and Windows support. |
How to disable only the startup entry
After confirming that Wi-Fi works without the utility, open Task Manager → Startup apps, select the Broadcom/Dell wireless entry and choose Disable. Restart and test connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting to a known network. If wireless controls or adapter properties disappear, re-enable the entry rather than deleting the executable.

When removal is appropriate
If the package is obsolete and you are replacing it, use its vendor uninstaller or remove the adapter and driver through Device Manager instead of manually deleting a single file. Keep a copy of the correct driver first, especially if the computer may be offline after the restart.
Why does bcmwltry.exe keep crashing?
The executable is usually a symptom of a wireless software or hardware problem, not the root cause itself. The most useful clue is what happens at the same time: a Device Manager code, a missing-file message, loss of Wi-Fi, or a security warning.
| Likely cause | Typical clue | Most relevant response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing, failed or corrupted driver | Wireless disappears, the utility crashes after startup, or Device Manager reports Code 28, 37 or 39. | Obtain the computer maker’s model-specific driver and reinstall it. |
| Unverifiable driver signature | Device Manager reports Code 52 or the file’s signature cannot be verified. | Replace the package with the latest driver from the manufacturer. |
| Windows networking state is damaged | The process error appears with connection failures, bad address renewal or DNS problems. | Reset Winsock and TCP/IP, then refresh the IP address and DNS cache. |
| Windows component corruption | Other system utilities also fail, or repair messages mention protected system files. | Run DISM first and SFC second from an elevated Command Prompt. |
| Malware impersonation | The file has no matching WLAN hardware or package, uses an unrelated path or signer, or Defender flags it. | Quarantine or remove it through Defender and investigate the system; do not trust the name. |
| Physical or legacy hardware failure | Reinstallation does not restore the adapter, or the card repeatedly disappears. | Confirm the hardware model and Windows support before considering replacement. |
How do I fix bcmwltry.exe errors on Windows?
Work through the following sequence. It starts with reversible identification and driver work, then addresses networking and Windows components. Do not begin by deleting the executable.
1. Capture the adapter and error details
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters. Double-click the Broadcom or Dell wireless device, then record the device name, driver date, driver version and any status code shown on the General tab.
- Codes 28, 37 and 39 indicate, respectively, a driver that is not installed, failed to initialize or is damaged. Code 52 indicates that Windows cannot verify the driver’s signature. These codes point toward driver replacement rather than deleting bcmwltry.exe.
Also note whether the adapter is visible at all. If it is absent from Network adapters, choose View → Show hidden devices and check for a greyed-out entry. A missing device can indicate hardware, firmware or connection trouble rather than a tray-program fault.
2. Download the correct manufacturer driver first
Use the PC manufacturer’s support page and search by the exact computer model or service identifier. Select the wireless LAN driver that matches your Windows edition and system architecture. If the computer may lose Wi-Fi during removal, download the installer before proceeding and copy it to local storage; an Ethernet connection or another computer can provide a temporary way to obtain it.

Do not substitute a package for a different Dell model or a generic file with the same chipset name. OEM customizations can affect the tray utility, power management and adapter properties.
3. Uninstall the adapter and reinstall it cleanly
- In Device Manager → Network adapters, right-click the affected wireless adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you have the replacement installer available and are prepared for a temporary loss of Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the removal and restart Windows.
- After restart, Windows may detect the adapter and install a basic driver automatically. If it does not, run the manufacturer installer you downloaded. You can also return to Device Manager, choose Action → Scan for hardware changes, and then install the driver manually.
- Restart again and check Device Manager for a normal status message. Test a wireless connection before deciding whether the tray startup entry is still needed.
Microsoft documents this uninstall-and-restart approach as a way to let Windows attempt a clean reinstall. If the same code returns with the new OEM package, record the exact code and investigate compatibility or hardware rather than repeatedly removing the file.
4. Reset Winsock and TCP/IP when connectivity also fails
Use this step when bcmwltry.exe errors occur together with connection failures, address-renewal problems or DNS symptoms. Save work, then open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin) by right-clicking Start. Run each command in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart after the commands complete, reconnect to Wi-Fi and test the application or game that exposed the problem. The first two commands reset Winsock and TCP/IP state; the remaining commands release and renew the address and clear cached DNS information. A network reset will not repair a bad driver, so perform the driver check first.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart. Running DISM first gives SFC the component source it may need; reversing the order can leave SFC unable to repair some files.
6. Use Network reset only as a last resort
Open Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset and select Reset now only after the earlier steps fail. Microsoft describes this as the last step because it removes installed network adapters and their settings, reinstalls the adapters after a restart and can require reconfiguration of VPN clients or virtual switches. Record custom network settings before using it.
7. Recheck security if the file still looks wrong
If the executable remains in an unexpected location, lacks a matching signature or is repeatedly recreated after removal, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and, if needed, Defender Offline. Do not restore a quarantined copy merely because its filename looks familiar. Reinstall the wireless package from the PC manufacturer only after the system is clean and the adapter identity is confirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen should I replace the wireless card?
Replacement is conditional, not a standard bcmwltry.exe fix. The Dell DW WLAN Card is physical hardware, and a compatible replacement can be relevant when the card itself fails, repeatedly vanishes from Device Manager or is no longer supported by the Windows version in use. A new executable cannot repair a defective radio, connector or antenna.
Verify compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact computer model and the existing card’s model number.
- Match the card’s physical size, connector, antenna leads and supported wireless standards.
- Confirm that Dell provides a driver for the intended Windows edition; Microsoft’s guidance is to use the model-specific manufacturer driver.
- Plan for driver installation after replacement, including an offline copy if Wi-Fi will not work immediately.
A generic card that fits physically may still lack firmware or driver support. Replace hardware only after software reinstallation and component repair have failed to restore a consistently detected adapter.

How can I decide whether to keep, disable or reinstall bcmwltry.exe?
Use the result of the checks rather than the filename’s age or appearance. If the file matches the signed Dell/Broadcom package, the adapter works and you use its controls, keeping it enabled is reasonable. If Windows handles Wi-Fi normally and the tray interface adds no value, disable its startup entry and test after reboot.
- Legitimate file, no symptoms: keep it or disable startup according to whether you need the vendor controls.
- Legitimate file with crashes or Device Manager errors: reinstall the exact OEM driver, then repair networking or Windows components if symptoms remain.
- Unmatched file or security warning: scan with Defender, quarantine when directed, and replace the wireless software from the manufacturer.
- Adapter still missing after clean installation: investigate card compatibility or hardware failure before purchasing a replacement.
This approach preserves a working wireless configuration while separating three different problems that are often conflated: a harmless startup utility, damaged driver software and a malicious file using a familiar name.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, show current and recommended versions, install official drivers, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does bcmwltry.exe have to run for Wi-Fi to work?
Not necessarily. The file is the Broadcom/Dell tray and configuration utility, while Windows can sometimes manage the adapter without its interface. Disable only the startup entry, restart, and verify that connecting, reconnecting and opening adapter properties still work.
What should I do if the computer is offline after uninstalling the driver?
Before removal, download the exact driver installer and save it locally or on removable storage. If that was not possible, use Ethernet or another computer and transfer the package; Windows may also load a basic driver automatically after a restart.
Why is a legitimate-looking bcmwltry.exe in System32 on one PC and Program Files on another?
Dell/Broadcom packages changed layout across hardware generations and software versions. Legacy documentation places WLAN components in System32, while newer OEM installers may use vendor folders under Program Files, so path differences must be checked alongside the signature and installed package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a Defender detection be a false positive?
It can happen, but the filename alone is not enough to dismiss a detection. Keep the item quarantined while you verify the signer and WLAN package, update Defender, and obtain a clean replacement driver from the computer manufacturer rather than restoring an unverified copy.
