cb_share_config.exe is the Windows CB Share Config utility installed with Code::Blocks. It transfers settings between Code::Blocks configuration files, including the default.conf profile. A copy in the Code::Blocks program folder is normally consistent with a legitimate installation, but the filename alone proves nothing: counterfeit software installers can use familiar names. Verify the complete path, installation provenance, signature or hash, and security-scan results before trusting it. Most genuine errors are caused by a missing configuration file, a damaged profile, insufficient access, or changing the profile while Code::Blocks is open. The sections below show how to identify the file, repair configuration transfers, and respond safely when the copy is not where it should be.

What does cb_share_config.exe do?

CB Share Config is a support utility for Code::Blocks rather than the main integrated development environment. Code::Blocks documentation refers to the tool as cb_share_conf and describes it as being in the installation directory for managing and storing settings. Windows packages expose the executable as cb_share_config.exe.

The utility lets you choose a source Code::Blocks configuration, choose a destination default.conf, transfer selected settings, and save the result. That can move editor preferences, themes, compiler profiles, and other IDE options between installations or user profiles. It does not compile programs, replace the Code::Blocks IDE, or act as a general Windows repair program.

Think of it as a profile-management tool. The program reads structured Code::Blocks settings from a local file, applies the categories you select, and writes the resulting profile. It is useful after moving to a new computer, testing a clean profile, sharing an editor layout, or restoring settings after an installation change. Because it edits configuration rather than source code, your project files are not the normal target of the transfer. Nevertheless, back up both projects and configuration before making broad changes.

Where should cb_share_config.exe be located?

The usual Windows location is inside the Code::Blocks program directory, commonly C:Program FilesCodeBlockscb_share_config.exe. The exact folder can differ if you selected another drive or directory during installation, or if you use a portable package. The user-specific configuration normally lives separately at %APPDATA%CodeBlocksdefault.conf, which expands to a path under the currently signed-in Windows account.

Item What to expect Why it matters
Executable Inside the Code::Blocks installation directory, alongside other Code::Blocks files Supports that the file belongs to the installed application
User profile %APPDATA%CodeBlocksdefault.conf This is the destination profile used for a user’s settings
Inventory size About 191 KB in an inventory of CodeBlocks 20.03 Version-specific information, not a universal size test

If Task Manager shows the process, right-click it and choose Open file location. For a shortcut, right-click the shortcut, open Properties, and inspect Target. A path under %TEMP%, Downloads, a random AppData folder, C:UsersPublic, or another unrelated directory needs investigation even when the filename is spelled correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To expand the profile path yourself, press Win+R, enter %APPDATA%CodeBlocks, and press Enter. If the folder is missing, that does not by itself prove a problem: a new installation or a never-started profile may not have created it yet. Start the verified Code::Blocks installation once, close it normally, and check again. Do not create or copy a profile into a different user’s AppData folder by accident.

Is cb_share_config.exe safe?

A normally located copy installed with Code::Blocks is plausibly benign. That is a conditional assessment, not a guarantee. Any executable can be copied, renamed, or bundled into a malicious installer, and the same filename can be used by unrelated software.

Evidence that supports a legitimate copy

  • Code::Blocks is installed and appears in Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or the corresponding Control Panel list).
  • The full path is within the Code::Blocks installation directory, not a temporary or public folder.
  • Other Code::Blocks files are present beside it and their versions are consistent.
  • File Properties show a plausible publisher and a valid digital signature when the distributor provides one.
  • A current Microsoft Defender scan, or another reputable security product, reports no threat.
  • The process does not create unexplained scheduled tasks, services, Run keys, Defender exclusions, process injection, or outbound connections.

Warning signs that change the decision

  • The file arrived from a “free download” page, a search advertisement, or a look-alike vendor site rather than an official Code::Blocks distribution channel.
  • It requests elevation even though you are only opening a configuration file, or it attempts to weaken Defender or add exclusions.
  • Its signature is missing or invalid where a signed copy is expected, or its SHA-256 hash differs from a trusted installer copy.
  • It persists after Code::Blocks is removed, launches from an unrelated directory, or makes network connections that the configuration task does not require.

Microsoft reported an active 2026 campaign in which counterfeit software-download sites impersonated trusted vendors and delivered installers that established persistence, weakened security protections, and contacted attacker infrastructure. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes investigating behavior and file paths rather than trusting a filename or a single hash, because campaign names and hashes can change.

There is no universal “safe size” or filename spelling that can certify this executable. A clean scan is useful evidence but not an absolute guarantee, especially when a file came from an untrusted installer. Conversely, a warning caused by a heuristic or a blocked download should be investigated against the path, publisher, installer provenance, and behavior rather than dismissed automatically.

How can I verify the file before running it?

Verification is safest when performed on the file you already have, before granting it elevation or replacing it.

  1. Record the path and timestamps. In File Explorer, hold Shift, right-click the file, and choose Copy as path. Note the containing folder and when the file appeared.
  2. Inspect properties. Open Properties and review Details and Digital Signatures. A missing signature is not automatically proof of malware, but it removes one useful trust signal.
  3. Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath 'C:Program FilesCodeBlockscb_share_config.exe'. Keep the output for comparison with a hash from a trusted, matching Code::Blocks installer or a known-good machine. Do not treat the 191 KB inventory figure as a hash substitute.
  4. Scan the exact file. Right-click it in File Explorer and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, then install current security updates and run a full scan if anything is suspicious.
  5. Observe behavior only in a controlled way. If it creates persistence, changes Defender settings, injects into another process, or makes unexplained network connections, stop using it and follow the containment steps below.

When comparing hashes, match the Code::Blocks release, architecture, installer type, and distribution channel. A different build can legitimately have a different hash, so a mismatch is a reason to stop and verify, not proof by itself that malware is present. Save the hash, path, file version, and scan result in your notes so you can compare a replacement later.

Why will CB Share Config not open?

Failure to open usually points to a missing or damaged installation, a blocked executable, or an attempt to launch the wrong copy. Start with identity and provenance rather than downloading a replacement DLL or executable.

Check the installation and Windows blocks

  • Confirm that Code::Blocks is installed and that the executable remains in its program directory.
  • In Properties, look for an Unblock checkbox on files obtained from another computer. Only unblock a file after verifying its source and scan results.
  • Temporarily check whether controlled-folder access or endpoint policy is blocking the program. Do not disable security protections globally; use your organization’s approved procedure.
  • Launch the known installation copy directly from its folder, not from a shortcut pointing to an old drive or deleted installation.

If Windows displays a missing-file, side-by-side, or access-denied message, record the exact wording. It helps distinguish an incomplete installation from a profile problem. Check whether other Code::Blocks executables open; if they also fail, repairing or reinstalling the complete application is more sensible than replacing this one file. Do not download individual runtime DLLs from unrelated websites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a damaged installation

Back up the Code::Blocks project and configuration folders first. If the installer offers a repair option, use the installer from the official distribution channel. Otherwise uninstall Code::Blocks, restart Windows, and reinstall it from that same trusted channel. Do not copy an isolated executable from a random download site.

After reinstalling, launch the newly installed Code::Blocks once before importing settings. This allows the program to create its normal profile structure. Then close it, confirm the new executable’s path, and use CB Share Config with a backed-up source. A clean reinstall addresses missing program files; it does not automatically repair a malformed default.conf, so follow the profile-recovery steps below as needed.

How do I fix a configuration-transfer error?

Use this sequence when the utility opens but cannot read a source file, save the destination, or make the transferred settings appear.

  1. Close Code::Blocks completely. Exit the IDE and check Task Manager for any remaining Code::Blocks process. The IDE can overwrite default.conf while the transfer tool is writing it.
  2. Locate the source configuration. In CB Share Config, select a real .conf file and verify it still exists. A shortcut to a disconnected drive, a deleted profile, or a path with a typing error produces a read failure.
  3. Confirm the destination. Use the current account’s %APPDATA%CodeBlocksdefault.conf, not another user’s profile or the installation directory, unless your specific setup intentionally uses a different profile.
  4. Test permissions. Make sure the account can read the source and write the destination folder. Check the destination folder’s Security tab and available disk space. If policy protects the profile, use the minimum necessary elevation only with the already-trusted installation copy.
  5. Back up before saving. Copy the existing default.conf to a dated backup outside the profile folder. This gives you a rollback if the transfer produces an unusable configuration.
  6. Transfer and save. Select only the settings you need, write the destination profile, and wait for the save operation to finish before launching Code::Blocks.
  7. Reopen and test. Start Code::Blocks, confirm the expected theme, compiler, or editor settings, and test a small project. If the IDE still shows old settings, verify that it is reading the same profile path you edited.

If the source is on a network, removable, or cloud-synchronized drive, copy it to a local folder you control first. This removes disconnected-drive and synchronization-lock variables. Avoid editing the same profile simultaneously in two Code::Blocks installations or under two Windows accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if default.conf is empty or corrupted?

An empty, truncated, or malformed profile can make Code::Blocks start with defaults or cause the sharing utility to fail. Preserve the original before attempting recovery.

  1. Close Code::Blocks and copy the existing %APPDATA%CodeBlocksdefault.conf to a safe backup location.
  2. Compare its size and contents with a known-good backup from the same user and Code::Blocks setup. Do not merge arbitrary configuration files from an unrelated version without keeping a rollback copy.
  3. Restore the known-good file if you have one, then open Code::Blocks and test it.
  4. If no usable backup exists, rename the damaged profile rather than deleting it, for example to default.conf.bad. Start Code::Blocks so it can create a fresh profile, then close it.
  5. Use CB Share Config to transfer settings from a known-good source into the newly created profile. Reintroduce custom settings gradually so a malformed section can be identified.

Keep the renamed file until the new profile has worked through several launches and a test build. If only one imported category causes failure, restore the clean profile and transfer smaller groups of settings. This is slower than replacing the whole file, but it preserves a usable rollback and can isolate the damaged section.

How do I handle a suspicious or malicious copy?

Do not try to “repair” an off-path executable by downloading another copy from an unverified mirror. Containment and a clean reinstall are safer.

  1. Stop launching the file. If it is running and your environment permits, disconnect the device from networks to limit possible communication while preserving evidence.
  2. Use Microsoft Defender or your organization’s approved security tool to quarantine the file and run an updated full scan. Follow incident-response requirements if this is a managed computer.
  3. Check for persistence that appeared with the file: Task Scheduler entries, unfamiliar services, Startup items, Run keys, Defender exclusions, and unexplained outbound connections. Record names and times before removing items when evidence may be needed.
  4. Change passwords from a separate, trusted device if you entered credentials while the suspicious installer was active. Review account sign-in alerts and browser sessions.
  5. After the system is clean, uninstall the untrusted Code::Blocks copy and reinstall Code::Blocks from its official distribution channel. Restore only configuration files you have verified, not the suspicious executable.

Do not disable Defender, tamper protection, SmartScreen, or network protection merely to make the program launch. Microsoft specifically recommends keeping these controls enabled and investigating behavior and paths. On a work-managed computer, contact the administrator before deleting evidence or changing security settings.

Can I delete cb_share_config.exe?

Deleting the file is not a good first troubleshooting step. If it is part of a working Code::Blocks installation, removal can break configuration-transfer features and may leave the installation inconsistent.

If you no longer use Code::Blocks, uninstall the application through Windows Installed apps and remove leftover files only after backing up projects and any settings you want to keep. If the executable is suspicious, quarantine it with security software and investigate the system rather than simply deleting it; deletion alone does not undo persistence or other changes an installer may have made.

There is normally no need to purchase a repair utility to perform the path check, profile backup, reinstall, or Defender scan described here. Optional Windows diagnostic software can be considered only after those free checks, and it should complement—not replace—antivirus protection.

Which checks distinguish a path problem from a security problem?

Observation Likely interpretation Next action
Code::Blocks is installed; file is beside its other executables; transfer cannot find a profile Path, profile, or permissions issue is more likely Verify source and %APPDATA%CodeBlocksdefault.conf, back up, and retry with the IDE closed
File is in a temporary or public folder and Code::Blocks is not installed Provenance is unexplained Do not run it; scan, quarantine if indicated, and obtain software only from an official channel
Defender settings change or persistence appears after launch Possible compromise Contain the device, scan, preserve evidence, and reinstall cleanly
Signature or hash differs from a trusted matching installer File may be replaced or from another build Stop using it and compare against a freshly obtained, verified installer

If you prefer an optional shortcut after completing the path, profile, backup, and security checks, Outbyte PC Repair can diagnose and address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering cleanup and an app-crash log. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. Frequently Asked Questions

Does cb_share_config.exe need an internet connection?

The configuration transfer itself is a local operation: it reads and writes Code::Blocks configuration files. Unexpected network traffic from the process is therefore a useful reason to pause and verify the executable, although security software or enterprise monitoring may produce background connections unrelated to the utility.

Will reinstalling Code::Blocks erase my projects?

Projects are normally stored separately from the program directory, so reinstalling should not remove them when you leave project folders untouched. Back up both projects and the Code::Blocks profile before uninstalling, and check the installer’s removal options rather than assuming every setting will be preserved.

Why do my transferred settings disappear after restarting Code::Blocks?

The IDE may be loading a different user profile, or it may have been open while the transfer tool wrote the file and then overwrote the changes on exit. Confirm the active account’s %APPDATA%CodeBlocks path and perform the transfer with every Code::Blocks process closed.

Is the 191 KB file size a reliable malware test?

No. That figure comes from an inventory of CodeBlocks 20.03 and can vary with the release, build, packaging, and updates. Path, provenance, signature or hash, and observed behavior provide stronger evidence than size alone.

Why is cb_share_config.exe asking for administrator permission?

A configuration transfer normally reads and writes user files, so unexpected elevation deserves scrutiny. First verify that the executable is the trusted copy in the Code::Blocks installation directory and that the destination is your own %APPDATA%CodeBlocks profile. Use only the minimum approved elevation for a verified installation; never elevate an unexplained copy.

Can I copy cb_share_config.exe from another computer?

Do not copy an isolated executable as a repair. Builds, supporting files, signatures, and configuration paths can differ. Obtain the complete Code::Blocks installer from its official distribution channel, verify it, and reinstall or repair the application instead.

What should I do if Windows says the file is missing after an update?

Confirm the installed Code::Blocks version and inspect its program directory. If the file is absent while the rest of the installation is intact, use the official installer’s repair option or reinstall the complete package. Avoid downloading a single executable or DLL from a search result.

Will CB Share Config migrate compiler settings automatically?

It can transfer selected settings from a source configuration, including compiler profiles, but the destination machine still needs compatible compilers, tool paths, and permissions. After the transfer, inspect the compiler configuration and run a small test build rather than assuming every path remains valid.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I find a backup of default.conf?

Look in your own backup locations and in %APPDATA%CodeBlocks. The utility does not guarantee an automatic historical backup. Before each transfer, create a dated copy outside the profile folder so a failed write can be rolled back.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: cb_share_config.exe is a legitimate Code::Blocks configuration utility when it comes from the installed program directory. Verify the path and provenance, keep Code::Blocks closed while editing default.conf, back up the profile, and use Defender before trusting an unfamiliar copy. An off-path executable or one that changes security settings, creates persistence, or makes unexplained connections should be quarantined and replaced only through a clean, official Code::Blocks installation.
