cemu.exe is the Windows program file for Cemu, an open-source Wii U emulator. It is not a Windows system component. A copy is plausibly legitimate when you downloaded Cemu from the cemu-project repository or its linked GitHub Releases page, it is inside the Cemu folder you chose, and it passes Windows Security checks. The filename alone cannot prove that it is safe.
Launch failures, “cemu.exe has stopped working,” missing games after an update, WUD/WUX key messages, graphics crashes and controller problems usually have different fixes. Use the matching branch below, and back up your Cemu folder before replacing files or changing data paths.

What is cemu.exe and what does it do?
Cemu is a Wii U emulator that runs most Wii U games and homebrew in a playable state. On Windows, cemu.exe is the executable that starts the emulator and provides its graphics, input, file-management and emulation functions. The project is written in C and C++ and also has 64-bit Linux and macOS builds.
The Cemu project distributes Windows installer and portable packages through its GitHub Releases channel. A portable package normally runs from the folder into which you extracted it; an installer creates the installation in the location you select. In either case, the executable should be accompanied by the other Cemu files and folders rather than appearing as a lone file in a temporary or unrelated directory.

Cemu is not part of Windows, Microsoft DirectX or the Windows driver store. Removing a copy of cemu.exe will not repair Windows itself, but deleting the wrong copy can remove your emulator configuration, installed titles or saves if those data are stored in that installation’s mlc01 directory.
Is cemu.exe safe or a virus?
It can be safe, but the name is not authentication. Safety depends on where the file came from, where it is located, whether its signature and properties are consistent with the download, and what Windows Security reports.

- Start at the cemu-project repository and follow its link to the official GitHub Releases page. Download the installer or portable archive offered there.
- Avoid random “DLL download” pages, cracked bundles, peer-to-peer packages and installers that bundle unrelated software. A same-named executable from one of those sources needs separate malware review.
- If another person supplied the file, ask for the original release archive rather than accepting a copied executable. Replacing only one file can leave a damaged or modified set of program files.
Check the location and file properties
- In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and review its folder path. An unexpected copy in a temporary directory, an email-download folder or an unrelated application directory is more suspicious than the copy in the Cemu folder you intentionally created.
- Use the Digital Signatures tab when it is present and inspect the publisher information. Not every release necessarily carries a signature, so the absence of one is not proof of malware and its presence is not a substitute for a trusted download source.
- Do not treat the filename, icon or a single matching name as a certificate of authenticity. The available project information does not provide one universal hash that applies to every Cemu release.
Scan before allowing or replacing anything
- Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, update protection intelligence, and run a Full scan.
- If Windows Security continues to report a suspicious file or unwanted software, disconnect from sensitive accounts and use Microsoft Defender Offline scan. It runs outside the normal Windows session and can detect threats that interfere with a normal scan.
- Do not disable real-time protection simply to launch a download. Obtain a clean archive from the official release channel instead. Microsoft distinguishes malware from potentially unwanted applications and recommends current software, updated definitions and full or offline scans.
- If a known-clean release appears to be a false positive, use Microsoft’s malware or false-positive submission process rather than downloading an altered “fixed” copy from an unofficial site.
These checks can establish whether the provenance is reasonable, but they cannot authenticate a particular binary without examining that exact file. If the executable arrived bundled with another program, came from peer-to-peer sharing, or appears in a location you did not choose, treat it as untrusted until a scan and a clean re-download resolve the question.
Why does cemu.exe fail to open or stop working?
There is no single cause behind every launch error. Match the symptom to the most likely branch before deleting files or changing settings.

How do I safely reinstall or update Cemu?
A replacement install is the most useful first repair for a damaged executable, provided you preserve the existing folder. The Cemu FAQ recommends downloading the desired ZIP, extracting it over the current folder and replacing files when prompted.

- Close Cemu completely. Check Task Manager if the window disappeared but the process remains. Do not overwrite files while the emulator is running.
- Back up the whole Cemu folder. Copy it to another drive or a clearly named backup location. Include the
mlc01directory if it is inside the folder; it can contain system files, installed games, updates, downloadable content and save data. - Download the intended Windows build from the project’s official GitHub Releases path. Choose the installer or portable package that matches how you normally run Cemu. Scan the downloaded archive before opening it.
- Extract the ZIP with a trusted archive utility. The Cemu Wiki documents extraction with 7-Zip or WinRAR. Do not run the emulator from a damaged partial extraction.
- Choose a writable location. The Wiki advises avoiding folders that require administrator permissions, such as
Program Files. A folder under your user profile or another directory where your account can write is less likely to create access errors. - Replace the old files. Extract the new package over the backed-up installation and accept file replacement. Keep the backup until games, saves and controllers work again.
- Launch the new copy and test with a known-good title. If it works, the previous program files were likely damaged or inconsistent. If it fails in the same way, continue with the path, graphics, input and security checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Do not delete mlc01, configuration files or save folders as a first step. A clean executable does not require sacrificing personal data, and a backup gives you a reversible recovery path.
How do I fix missing games after a Cemu update?
Games disappearing after an update usually means Cemu is looking at a different folder, the mlc01 path changed, or the title files are not in a format Cemu can use. The update itself may be fine.
Recheck the configured game directory
- Open Cemu’s settings and locate the game-path configuration.
- Compare each listed path with the actual folder in File Explorer. A drive-letter change, renamed folder, disconnected external drive or newly extracted portable copy can leave a path pointing nowhere.
- Add the folder that contains the game files, then rescan the library. Keep one authoritative copy while troubleshooting so you do not accidentally configure a backup or incomplete extraction.
Verify the mlc01 directory
Cemu uses mlc01 for system files, installed games, updates, DLC and save data. The installation guide says it can be moved to another drive when space is limited, but the emulator must be pointed to the new location. If you moved the directory during an update, restore the previous path or configure the new one before concluding that the games were deleted.
Check for broken or merged titles
The Cemu FAQ identifies broken files and unsupported “merged titles” as causes of missing entries. Reacquire unmerged files from your own lawful dump and make sure the extraction completed. Do not combine folders from different dumps or assume that a folder name proves the content is complete.
How do I fix WUD and WUX key errors?
WUD and WUX images require the correct decryption key in a file named keys.txt. Cemu’s FAQ says the project cannot provide copyrighted keys; you must dump and configure your own keys.

- Confirm that the title is actually a WUD or WUX image and identify the exact title or disc key your own dump requires.
- Place the legally obtained key in Cemu’s
keys.txtfile using the syntax expected by your Cemu build. Avoid copying keys from random websites or “key generators.” - Restart Cemu and test the image again. A typographical error, an extra character or a key for a different title produces the same kind of failure as a missing key.
- If you want to avoid key handling, use a WUA file created from your own dump when possible. The FAQ recommends WUA because it is smaller and does not require keys.
A WUD/WUX key message is not evidence that cemu.exe is infected. It is normally an encryption and file-format issue. Security scanning and provenance checks still apply to the emulator and any conversion utilities you use.
How can graphics settings and drivers stop cemu.exe crashes?
Graphics initialization and shader compilation can make Cemu appear to crash even when the executable is intact. The Cemu FAQ recommends Vulkan and Async shader compile as starting points for performance and shader-stutter problems.
Update the emulator and graphics driver
Check the current Cemu release notes before replacing an installation. Recent notes include fixes for Vulkan sampler limits and reductions in Vulkan crashes, as well as Windows HID and libusb changes. Install the current driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer and reboot before retesting.
Try the documented baseline
- Open Cemu’s graphics settings and select Vulkan if your GPU supports it.
- Enable Async shader compile to reduce pauses while shaders are built.
- Test one game without adding new graphics packs or experimental overrides. If the baseline works, reintroduce custom settings one at a time.
- If Vulkan still fails during startup, test the other available graphics backend to determine whether the failure is API-specific. Record which setting works instead of deleting the installation.
The Cemu Wiki describes NVIDIA GPUs as generally working best and says AMD hardware may require more tuning. These are guide-level observations, not a guarantee for every game or graphics pack. The same page lists a minimum of 4 GB of RAM and x86_64 Windows support; a game can still need more resources or a newer driver.

Controller detection is separate from executable safety. Update Cemu first, because the release notes include Windows HID and libusb changes, then match the input mode to the controller.

- Xbox controllers: The Wiki says they work through XInput. Select the XInput option in Cemu and confirm that Windows sees the controller before launching a game.
- Other controllers: They may require additional setup. The Wiki cites DS4Windows as an example for some PlayStation-style devices and notes that motion input needs a configured motion source.
- USB problems: Try a different port, remove unnecessary hubs, and reconnect the controller after Cemu starts. If Windows itself does not list the device, repair that Windows or hardware connection before changing Cemu files.
Do not install unsigned “driver packs” offered by pop-ups that claim to fix Cemu input. Use the controller manufacturer’s software or the documented setup for your device, and scan unexpected downloads.
What Windows permissions and folder choices matter?
Cemu needs to read its program and game files and write configuration, shader and save data. A protected directory can create symptoms that resemble a broken executable.
- Prefer a folder your Windows account can write to instead of
Program Filesor another administrator-protected location. - Make sure an external drive containing games or
mlc01is connected and has the same drive letter used in Cemu’s paths. - Do not set the executable to run permanently as administrator merely to bypass an access message. First move the installation to a user-writable folder and correct the paths.
- Keep the backup outside the active Cemu folder so an update cannot overwrite both copies.
What should I do if Windows Security flags cemu.exe?
Stop using that copy until you know why it was flagged. A warning can indicate malware, a potentially unwanted bundle or a false positive, and the filename alone cannot distinguish those cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can cemu.exe run on 32-bit Windows?
No. The Cemu Windows build is intended for 64-bit x86_64 Windows. A 32-bit installation cannot meet that requirement, so use a supported 64-bit system rather than replacing random DLL files.
Can I move Cemu’s mlc01 folder to another drive?
Yes. The Cemu installation guide says mlc01 can be moved when space is limited. After moving it, update Cemu’s configured path and keep the original copy until installed games, updates and saves appear correctly.
Do WUA files need keys.txt?
The Cemu FAQ recommends WUA because it is smaller and does not require the decryption keys needed by WUD and WUX images. You still need to create the WUA from your own lawful dump.
Why does a clean Cemu download still trigger a Defender warning?
A detection may be a false positive, a bundled download, or a genuinely modified file. Check the exact path and provenance, run a full or offline scan, and submit a known-clean release through Microsoft’s false-positive process instead of disabling protection.
Does Cemu support operating systems other than Windows?
