chrome-updater.exe is usually a temporary Chrome update component, not the main browser executable. Current Chrome installations commonly use updater.exe inside a versioned GoogleUpdater folder, while an update can briefly extract a file named chrome_updater.exe into Windows’ temporary system directory. The name alone does not prove that a file is genuine. Check its full path, Google digital signature, parent process and behavior before deciding whether it is safe. For ordinary update failures, use Chrome’s built-in Help > About Chrome page first; treat arbitrary locations, persistence or security detections as possible impersonation.
What is chrome-updater.exe?
Chrome’s updater is the background service that checks for and installs browser updates. Google describes GoogleUpdater as “a service that helps keep Chrome up to date.” The updater checks information such as the release channel, basic hardware details, Chrome version, installation age and recent-use data so it can determine which update applies.

The executable name varies by Chrome generation and installation scope. A current installation may show updater.exe, while an update package can create a short-lived chrome_updater.exe during extraction. That difference is normal by itself; the surrounding path and process activity matter more than the filename.
Why did GoogleUpdate.exe become updater.exe?
Chrome 124 introduced a staged migration on Windows. Older installations commonly used:

C:Program Files (x86)GoogleUpdateGoogleUpdate.exe
Newer installations use a versioned directory such as:
C:Program Files (x86)GoogleGoogleUpdater<VERSION>updater.exe
The old path can remain during the transition. Removing it solely because the name changed can break update components.
Why is chrome-updater.exe in my Temp folder?
During extraction, GoogleUpdater can create a file resembling:
C:WindowsSystemTempchrome_unpacker_beginunzipping...<VERSION>_chrome_updater.exe
A file in that documented staging pattern, created by a versioned GoogleUpdater process and removed after installation, is consistent with a normal update. A similarly named file in a download folder, random profile directory or unrelated service requires investigation.
Per-user versus system-wide updater installations
Windows can install GoogleUpdater for one account or for the whole computer. A per-user updater is normally under %LOCAL_APP_DATA%GoogleGoogleUpdater<VERSION>updater.exe. A system-wide installation is normally under %PROGRAMFILES%GoogleGoogleUpdater<VERSION>updater.exe; the actual Program Files location depends on Windows architecture and how Chrome was deployed. The distinction affects permissions, log locations and removal procedures. A system-wide updater may run with elevated rights and generally requires an elevated command prompt for diagnostic commands, whereas a per-user updater can usually be examined without administrator access.
Seeing both scopes is not automatically suspicious. A personal Chrome installation and a managed or machine-wide installation can leave different updater components on the same computer. Compare each executable with its matching Chrome installation rather than assuming that every duplicate is malware.

Is chrome-updater.exe safe?
It can be safe, but no filename is a security verdict. Evaluate four things together: provenance, signature, process context and behavior. A genuine file normally comes from a documented GoogleUpdater location, carries a valid Google publisher signature, is launched by the updater and performs update-related work without persistence or defensive tampering.
| Check | More consistent with Google’s updater | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Location | %LOCAL_APP_DATA%GoogleGoogleUpdater<VERSION>updater.exe, %PROGRAMFILES%GoogleGoogleUpdater<VERSION>updater.exe, or the documented Windows temporary extraction pattern |
Random user folders, a downloads directory, %ProgramData% copy with no matching installation, or an unrelated application folder |
| Signature | Windows reports a valid signature from Google’s signing infrastructure | Missing, invalid or mismatched signature |
| Parent process | Started by the versioned GoogleUpdater process during an update | Started by a script, unknown service, document, browser pop-up or unrelated executable |
| Behavior | Checks or installs Chrome and exits or remains as the documented updater service | Creates unexplained services, adds security exclusions, interferes with event logs, injects into other processes or mines cryptocurrency |
Malware has used Google- and Chrome-themed names. Documented incidents include copies placed under Google-like directories, automatic services, Defender exclusions, event-log interference, process injection and cryptocurrency mining. Those behaviors are substantially more concerning than a brief temporary updater process.
Why a path matters more than the filename
Windows permits many programs to use names such as updater.exe or chrome_updater.exe. A malicious copy can be renamed to match a trusted component, so searching only for the name produces false reassurance. Conversely, a legitimate update may use a temporary name that does not match the stable executable shown in older guides. Record the drive letter, every parent folder, file version and creation time. A path that changes between runs, appears under a user’s Downloads folder or sits beside unrelated scripts deserves additional scrutiny even if Chrome is installed.

How can I verify a chrome-updater.exe file?
1. Open the complete file path
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find
chrome-updater.exe,chrome_updater.exeorupdater.exeunder the process list. - Right-click it and select Open file location. If the process has already exited, use the alert, event log or security product’s quarantine details to recover the recorded path.
- Compare the path with the per-user and system-wide GoogleUpdater locations above. A temporary extraction path should include the recognizable
chrome_unpacker_beginunzipping...pattern.
Windows can install the updater for one user or for the whole computer. Per-user files normally live beneath %LOCAL_APP_DATA%; system-wide files normally live beneath %PROGRAMFILES%. The exact Program Files directory depends on Windows architecture and the installation.
2. Inspect the digital signature
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures and select the listed signature.
- Choose Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and the expected Google publisher.
An invalid or absent signature is a warning, not conclusive proof of malware. A valid signature also does not make an arbitrary path or suspicious behavior acceptable; review all four checks. If Windows cannot validate the signature because the file is still being written to a temporary directory, wait for extraction to finish and inspect the completed file or the security product’s recorded hash and path.
3. Check the parent process and command line
In Task Manager, enable the Command line column if available, or inspect the process with your endpoint-security console. A temporary chrome_updater.exe launched by a versioned GoogleUpdater updater.exe is plausible. A launch from a downloaded archive, an Office document, a random script or an unknown service is not.
Capture this information before ending the process: executable path, command-line arguments, parent process, user account, start time and network destination if your security console records it. These details help distinguish a short update transaction from a persistent program that merely borrows Chrome’s name.
4. Observe what it does
Normal update activity may create or replace Chrome files and then finish. Investigate immediately if the process repeatedly returns after deletion, creates an automatic service, adds exclusions to Microsoft Defender, tampers with event logging, injects into unrelated programs or consumes sustained CPU for mining. Record the path and parent process before terminating anything.
Brief disk or CPU bursts are expected while an update package is unpacked, verified and copied into the versioned Chrome directory. The important question is whether activity ends when the update completes and whether the files involved remain inside the expected Google locations.
5. Confirm Chrome’s own update status
Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Help > About Chrome. Let the check complete and relaunch when Chrome requests it. Do not trust a web-page pop-up or unsolicited download prompt claiming that Chrome needs an updater. Chrome’s own page is the supported way to start a check, and it shows whether the browser is current, downloading or waiting for a relaunch.
How do I fix chrome-updater.exe errors on Windows?
Use the following sequence. Stop when the error is resolved, but preserve the path and message if you need security or administrator support.
1. Update from Chrome’s About page
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Help > About Chrome.
- Wait for the update check and download to finish.
- Select Relaunch if shown, then test Chrome again.
Chrome normally applies a pending update after the browser closes and reopens. This supported workflow avoids third-party installers and verifies the update through Chrome’s own interface. If the page reports that an administrator controls updates, do not overwrite that policy with a random installer; contact the person or team responsible for the device.

2. Check basic Windows conditions
- Confirm that the computer has a working internet connection and that a captive portal is not blocking the request.
- Verify Windows date, time and time zone. A badly incorrect clock can invalidate secure connections and signatures.
- Restart Windows, then retry Help > About Chrome.
- Make sure the system drive has enough free space for the download and temporary extraction.
- Check that your account can write to the relevant per-user directory, or use administrator assistance for a machine-wide installation.
These checks address common update infrastructure failures; they do not establish that a suspicious executable is legitimate.
3. Check updater logs before changing files
Chromium documents an updater.log for both per-user and system-wide installations. Locate the log under the relevant GoogleUpdater installation and record the timestamp, version directory, error text and whether the failing process is per-user or system-wide. This distinction matters because a system-wide updater generally needs an elevated command prompt, while a per-user updater does not.
Chromium’s updater documentation also describes scoped --wake and update commands for diagnostics. Use the syntax and executable path from the documentation that matches your installed scope; do not copy a system-wide command into a standard, non-elevated prompt or run a command against an unverified executable. Save a copy of the log before clearing caches or reinstalling, because replacement can remove the evidence that explains the failure.
4. Check security software blocks
Endpoint protection can block a newly extracted updater when its process or path rules are outdated. Review the security product’s event and policy logs to see whether the Google updater was blocked. Install current policy or rule updates, verify that the intended Chrome updater rule is enabled, and follow your organization’s approval process if a narrowly scoped exception is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome products evaluate the newly created temporary file before it has finished extraction. A stale process or path rule can therefore produce an error even when the parent updater is genuine. Ask an administrator to verify the Google publisher and the documented extraction path, then approve only that specific process and location if policy permits.
Do not disable protection broadly or approve every executable containing “chrome.” Any approval should be limited to the verified Google publisher, documented updater process and expected path. If the file fails its signature or provenance checks, treat the detection as a security investigation rather than a false positive.
5. Repair Windows update infrastructure when appropriate
If Chrome’s updater depends on a Windows component that is failing, Microsoft’s general Windows guidance includes checking connectivity and date/time, clearing a corrupt update cache, restarting update-related services and considering interference from third-party security software. Apply those steps only to the Windows update problem you have identified. They cannot validate an executable found in an arbitrary directory.
Do not clear system caches merely because a file name looks unfamiliar. First note the exact error, affected scope and log entry. Cache resets and service restarts can remove useful diagnostic history and may require administrator rights.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
6. Scan when provenance or behavior is suspicious
- Disconnect from untrusted networks if the machine is showing active suspicious behavior, while preserving the evidence needed by your administrator or security team.
- Run a current, full-system security scan.
- Review detections, quarantine records, newly created services and scheduled tasks.
- Change important passwords from a known-clean device if you find evidence of credential theft or unauthorized access.
- Do not simply delete one executable if it recreates itself; persistence may remain in a service, scheduled task, startup entry or another file.
A file outside documented Google paths, an invalid signature, repeated reappearance, unexplained services, event-log tampering, process injection or mining activity warrants this path even if Chrome still opens. Trend Micro documented a copy under %ProgramData%GoogleChromeupdater.exe that created an automatic service, added Defender exclusions and mined cryptocurrency. Dr.Web described a similar Trojan using %ALLUSERSPROFILE%GoogleChromeupdater.exe, creating the GoogleUpdateTaskMachineQC service, interfering with event logging and injecting into processes. These examples show why a single-file deletion is not a complete cleanup.

7. Reinstall or uninstall deliberately
Chromium documents separate uninstall procedures for per-user and system-wide updater installations. Applications that rely on the updater should be removed or reinstalled as part of cleanup. Use Windows’ installed-app controls or your organization’s documented deployment process rather than deleting a single executable by hand.
After a deliberate uninstall, restart Windows and install Chrome again from a trusted source if you still need it. If the suspicious file remains after Chrome and its updater are removed, continue the malware investigation; it is no longer an ordinary Chrome update repair. On a managed computer, let the deployment system perform the reinstall so it restores the correct scope, permissions, services and policies.
Should I disable Chrome automatic updates?
Usually no. Chromium warns that turning off auto-updates should be done with caution because it can prevent current security fixes from arriving. Deleting updater files or blocking their services may also leave Chrome on an unsupported version.
If an organization must control update timing, use documented enterprise policy and maintain a managed patch schedule. Record who approves updates, how quickly security releases are tested and how exceptions expire. Home users should normally leave automatic updates enabled and troubleshoot the specific failure instead of disabling the mechanism. A temporary troubleshooting block should have a clear owner and removal date, not become a permanent substitute for patch management.
What is the difference between a normal updater error and malware?
A normal error is usually tied to a documented path, a valid Google signature and a recognizable update event. It may produce a log entry, fail to download or install, and then stop after connectivity, policy or cache problems are corrected.
Impersonation combines a misleading name with persistence or harmful behavior. The strongest indicators are an arbitrary location, an unrelated parent process, a service that starts automatically, security exclusions, event-log interference, process injection or sustained mining. When those indicators appear together, prioritize containment and scanning over repeated reinstalls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I delete chrome-updater.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the filename differs from GoogleUpdate.exe or because it appeared briefly in the documented temporary extraction directory. First verify the path, signature and parent process. If it is malicious, deleting the file alone may leave the persistence mechanism behind; if it is genuine, deletion can disrupt Chrome updates.

Practical decision checklist
- Path: Is the file in a versioned GoogleUpdater directory or the documented temporary extraction pattern?
- Scope: Does it belong to a per-user or system-wide installation, and do its permissions match that scope?
- Signature: Does Windows show a valid Google publisher signature?
- Context: Was it launched by the expected GoogleUpdater process during a Chrome update?
- Behavior: Does it finish after updating, without services, exclusions, injection, event-log interference or mining?
- Evidence: Did Chrome’s About page and
updater.logshow a matching update attempt?
If every answer is consistent, a temporary updater file is likely routine. If one answer is uncertain, preserve details and investigate. If several answers indicate impersonation, treat the computer as potentially compromised rather than repeatedly forcing Chrome to update.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does chrome-updater.exe use CPU or disk for a few minutes?
During an update, Chrome may unpack, verify and replace browser files, creating temporary extraction files and short bursts of disk activity. Check whether the process is running from a GoogleUpdater directory or the documented temporary staging path. Persistent high usage after the update finishes, especially with mining-like behavior, needs a security investigation.

Can I update Chrome if the updater service is broken?
Use Chrome’s Help > About Chrome page first, because it can repair or replace pending update components. If that fails, preserve the updater log and install scope, then use a trusted Chrome installer or your organization’s deployment method rather than downloading an executable from a pop-up.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Where are Chrome updater logs stored?
Chromium documents separate updater.log locations for per-user and system-wide installations. The correct location depends on which GoogleUpdater scope is installed, so identify the executable path first and then inspect the matching installation’s log directory.
Does a valid Google signature guarantee the file is harmless?
No. A valid signature supports publisher authenticity, but it does not explain why a file is in an unexpected directory or why it is creating services and exclusions. Combine signature results with path, parent process, command line and behavior.
Why do I see both GoogleUpdate.exe and updater.exe?
Chrome 124 introduced a staged Windows migration from the older Google Update directory to versioned GoogleUpdater directories. The former executable can remain during the transition, so both names may appear temporarily. Verify each path and signature before removing anything.
Is a chrome_updater.exe file in C:WindowsSystemTemp automatically malicious?
No. GoogleUpdater can extract a versioned file beneath a folder whose name begins with chrome_unpacker_beginunzipping during a normal update. Confirm that the parent is the versioned GoogleUpdater process, the signature is valid and the file disappears or is replaced when the update completes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What should I do if the file keeps returning after I delete it?
Stop deleting copies blindly. Record the path, parent process and command line, inspect services and scheduled tasks, and run a current full-system scan. Reappearance can indicate a legitimate updater retry, but it can also indicate persistence; suspicious behavior should be handled as a security investigation.
Do per-user and system-wide Chrome updaters use the same repair steps?
The About Chrome workflow is the same, but paths, permissions, logs and diagnostic commands differ. Per-user files are normally under LOCAL_APP_DATA, while system-wide files are under PROGRAMFILES and may require an elevated prompt. Identify the scope before running commands or uninstalling components.
Can security software cause a legitimate Chrome updater error?
Yes. Endpoint products can block newly extracted files when process or path rules are stale. Review the product’s event log, update its rules and request only a narrowly scoped approval for a verified Google publisher and documented path. Never approve an arbitrary file just because its name contains Chrome.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: chrome-updater.exe may be a legitimate, short-lived Chrome update file, especially in the documented Windows temporary extraction path. Trust the evidence, not the name: verify the complete path, Google signature, parent process, installation scope and behavior. Use Help > About Chrome and the matching updater logs for ordinary failures. If the file persists in an arbitrary location, creates services or exclusions, tampers with Windows or mines cryptocurrency, contain and scan the system instead of deleting one executable.
