clrbrowsersourceclient.exe is the client executable for the legacy CLR Browser Source plugin used by OBS Classic to display web pages and Flash-based content in a stream. Streamlabs documents it in a path such as C:Program Files (x86)OBSpluginsCLRHostPluginCLRBrowserSourcePluginCLRBrowserSourceClient.exe. That name and location make sense when the old plugin is installed, but they do not prove that every copy is genuine or safe. Windows users should first identify whether they are running OBS Classic or OBS Studio, verify the file’s origin and signature, and then address the specific symptom—most commonly an incompatible plugin, a persistent alert caused by animation settings, or security software blocking CLR Browser.
What is clrbrowsersourceclient.exe?
clrbrowsersourceclient.exe is the executable component of OBS’s legacy CLR Browser Source plugin. The plugin was designed to render web content, including web pages and Flash SWF files, inside an OBS scene. The original OBS Project forum post describing the plugin dates from August 22, 2013 and identifies Chromium 31.0.1621.0 in that historical build. That Chromium number describes the old plugin release; it is not the version of the Browser Source built into current OBS Studio.

Streamlabs’ support documentation, updated April 25, 2025, gives this example location:
C:Program Files (x86)OBSpluginsCLRHostPluginCLRBrowserSourcePluginCLRBrowserSourceClient.exe
The path is an example, not a universal installation location. A 32-bit OBS Classic installation may use Program Files (x86), while a different installation directory, drive, or portable setup can place the plugin elsewhere. The important clues are the surrounding folders—OBSpluginsCLRHostPluginCLRBrowserSourcePlugin—and whether you intentionally installed the old CLR Browser Source plugin.

Is clrbrowsersourceclient.exe safe?
It can be a legitimate OBS component when it came with the CLR Browser Source plugin and is in an expected OBS plugin directory. However, a familiar filename is not a security verdict. The reviewed documentation provides no cryptographic hash, publisher signature, or malware determination for an individual copy on your computer.
| What you observe | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
The filename matches CLRBrowserSourceClient.exe. |
It may be related to the legacy plugin. | That the file is authentic or harmless. |
| The file is beneath an OBS plugin folder like the documented example. | The location is consistent with a CLR Browser installation. | That another program did not replace or modify it. |
| The file has a valid digital signature from an expected publisher. | Windows can verify the signed publisher and file integrity for that signature. | That the program is appropriate for your current OBS version or free of every possible risk. |
| Your security product flags or blocks it. | The file needs investigation before you allow it. | That the alert is a false positive merely because the name is familiar. |
To investigate a local copy, right-click it in File Explorer, choose Properties, and inspect the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs when present. Confirm that you obtained OBS and the plugin from a source you trust, then scan the file and its containing folder with your current security software. Do not disable protection or create an exclusion solely because the filename matches Streamlabs’ example.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the file is in a temporary-download folder, a user profile’s random directory, a system directory unrelated to OBS, or a location created by an unknown installer, treat that as a reason to pause and investigate. The location alone still cannot establish whether a file is malicious; it only changes how urgently you should verify its origin.
Why does Windows show an error for this file?
Most reports fit one of three situations: the old plugin is being loaded by the wrong OBS edition, a Streamlabs alert remains on screen because its animation configuration is incomplete, or security software is denying CLR Browser access. A missing, damaged, or manually moved plugin can produce similar symptoms. The available support material does not define one universal error code or a complete fix for every crash, so match the remedy to what you actually see.

Is CLR Browser compatible with OBS Studio?
No. OBS Project forum guidance states that OBS Studio is not compatible with OBS Classic plugins.
OBS Studio has its own Browser Source, so attempting to load CLR Browser as an OBS Studio plugin is a compatibility mismatch rather than evidence that the executable itself is infected.
| Setup | CLR Browser Source status | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Classic | The plugin was designed for this older application. | Use it only if you deliberately maintain an OBS Classic installation and have verified the plugin’s source. |
| OBS Studio | OBS Classic plugins are not supported. | Use OBS Studio’s built-in Browser Source or an installer that includes the supported feature. |
The OBS forum category that contains CLR Browser material is archived and states that OBS Classic is no longer supported, directing users to upgrade to OBS Studio. That status explains why copying the old executable into a modern OBS Studio installation is unlikely to solve a problem and can create additional conflicts.
How do I check which OBS version is installed?
- Open OBS and use its Help menu to view the application’s version information. Record whether the product is labeled OBS Classic or OBS Studio.
- In File Explorer, browse to the folder that contains the executable. Compare the surrounding directory structure with the documented CLR Browser example rather than searching by filename alone.
- In OBS Studio, look for the normal Browser Source source type when adding a source. If it is available, use it instead of attempting to install a CLR Browser plugin.
- If an old shortcut, script, or startup entry launches the executable directly, identify the program that created it before deleting anything. A direct launch can produce an error even when OBS Studio itself is functioning normally.
How do I verify clrbrowsersourceclient.exe before allowing it?
Verification should come before any antivirus exclusion or repair attempt. Use this sequence:
- Confirm the source. Ask whether you intentionally installed OBS Classic and its CLR Browser Source plugin. If not, do not assume the file belongs to OBS.
- Check the full path. A path under an OBS plugin directory is contextually plausible; an unexplained path requires additional investigation.
- Inspect Properties. Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs. Record the file version, product name, publisher information, and signature status if Windows provides them.
- Scan the file. Use your current, fully updated security software to scan the executable and its parent folder. Follow the product’s quarantine and remediation instructions if it detects a threat.
- Do not substitute a name match for authentication. The available documentation does not publish a hash or signature that can certify your particular copy.
If a scan reports a threat, leave the file isolated while you determine whether OBS Classic is still needed. Do not restore it merely to make an alert or startup message disappear.

How can I fix a CLR Browser error caused by OBS Studio incompatibility?
The cleanest fix is to stop loading the legacy plugin in OBS Studio and move the scene to the supported Browser Source.
- Close OBS completely, including any instance still running in the notification area.
- Open OBS Studio and create or edit the scene that previously used CLR Browser.
- Choose Add Source and select Browser Source, then enter the page URL and dimensions required by your overlay or widget.
- Test the scene in a private or non-live session. Confirm that the page renders and that interactive elements, transparency, and audio behave as expected.
- Remove the obsolete CLR Browser source or disable the old plugin only after the replacement works. Keep a backup of your scene collection before making broad changes.
Do not copy CLRBrowserSourceClient.exe into OBS Studio’s directories as a workaround. The forum guidance specifically identifies the plugin as an OBS Classic component, while OBS Studio’s Browser Source is the supported alternative.

When the visible symptom is an alert that never leaves the scene, Streamlabs identifies missing in/out animations as one possible cause. The problem can occur when an alert is configured with no animation and custom code does not provide the animation behavior the widget expects.
- Open the relevant Streamlabs alert settings and inspect the animation controls.
- Ensure the alert has both an in animation and an out animation when the template expects them.
- If the setting is None, check whether your custom HTML, CSS, or JavaScript supplies the required entrance and exit behavior.
- Save the settings, reload the browser source, and trigger a test alert.
- If the alert still freezes, test a standard, unmodified alert theme to separate a configuration problem from a blocked browser process.
This branch addresses a persistent alert display; it does not establish that every alert problem is caused by clrbrowsersourceclient.exe.

What should I do if security software blocks CLR Browser?
Security software can deny CLR Browser, according to Streamlabs’ support guidance. Treat that as a product-specific troubleshooting path, not as a reason to trust every same-named executable.
- First verify that the executable came from the OBS plugin installation you intended to use and that its path and Properties information are consistent with that installation.
- Open your security product’s settings and review the event or quarantine record to see exactly which file and path were blocked.
- For Kaspersky, Streamlabs describes adding the named OBS and plugin paths—including the CLR Browser executable—to its exclusions, saving the exclusions, and restarting the PC. Use the current Kaspersky interface and its own documentation because labels and controls can change.
- After restarting, test the alert or source again. If the block returns, remove the exception and investigate the file rather than repeatedly widening exclusions.
Only create an exclusion for a verified installation, and only when you understand the security trade-off. Never turn off antivirus protection globally to make a browser source work, and do not whitelist an unfamiliar copy simply because its filename resembles the documented component.

If OBS Classic reports that the executable is missing, or Windows says it cannot start because a component is unavailable, close OBS and check whether the file was quarantined, deleted, renamed, or moved. Review your security product’s history and the Recycle Bin before downloading anything.
- If you no longer need OBS Classic, remove the obsolete source from your workflow and use OBS Studio’s Browser Source instead.
- If you must maintain an OBS Classic setup, reinstall the CLR Browser plugin only from the same trusted distribution that supplied the original installation, then scan the replacement before launching it.
- Do not download a stand-alone executable from an unverified “DLL fix” or software-download page. A replacement with the right name can still be unrelated or modified.
- After reinstalling, confirm that the file is placed in the plugin directory expected by that installation and that OBS Classic, not OBS Studio, is attempting to load it.
The reviewed support sources do not provide a universal repair command or a comprehensive diagnosis for every error string. If the failure continues after compatibility, configuration, and security checks, capture the exact Windows message, OBS edition, full path, and security-product event for further troubleshooting.

What mistakes should I avoid?
- Do not assume the filename is proof of safety. Names can be copied by unrelated software.
- Do not mix OBS Classic plugins with OBS Studio. Use the built-in Browser Source in OBS Studio.
- Do not add broad antivirus exclusions. Limit any exception to a verified path and remove it if it does not resolve the documented block.
- Do not delete the file before checking dependencies. An old scene or script may still reference it; document the setup first.
- Do not treat a frozen alert as an executable verdict. Check in/out animation settings before changing security controls.
When should I remove the file instead of repairing it?
Removal is reasonable when you do not use OBS Classic, the file’s origin is unknown, a current security scan identifies it as malicious, or the executable sits outside any OBS installation you recognize. Before deleting it, close OBS, preserve the exact path and any security alert details, and check whether a startup item or scene still references it. If OBS Studio is your only OBS application, migrating the scene to Browser Source is generally safer than retaining an unsupported legacy plugin.
What is the practical verdict on clrbrowsersourceclient.exe?
The executable is a plausible part of the legacy CLR Browser Source plugin when it appears in the expected OBS Classic plugin structure. It is not a current OBS Studio component, and neither its name nor its location authenticates a particular copy. Resolve errors by identifying the OBS edition, using Browser Source in OBS Studio, correcting Streamlabs animation settings for persistent alerts, and investigating security blocks only after verifying the file.
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete clrbrowsersourceclient.exe if I only use OBS Studio?
If OBS Studio is your only OBS application and no scene or script depends on the legacy plugin, you can remove the old plugin after closing OBS and documenting its location. Replace any CLR Browser source with OBS Studio’s Browser Source first so the scene does not lose its overlay.
Why does Windows say the program cannot start even though the file is present?
The file may be missing a dependent component, blocked by security software, damaged, or being launched by an incompatible OBS edition. Check the full error text, quarantine history, file Properties, and whether OBS Studio is trying to load an OBS Classic plugin.
Does the Chromium 31.0.1621.0 number mean my browser is outdated?
That version belongs to the historical CLR Browser Source plugin post from 2013. It describes the embedded Chromium build in that old plugin, not the browser version installed on your PC or the current Browser Source implementation in OBS Studio.
Recommended Free Tools
How can I tell whether a Streamlabs alert problem is unrelated to the executable?
Trigger a test using a standard alert theme and verify that both entrance and exit animations are configured. If the standard alert works while a custom one remains visible, inspect its custom HTML, CSS, or JavaScript before changing antivirus settings.
