cnqmupdt.exe is generally the updater for Canon Quick Menu, the utility that opens Canon printer and scanner tools, manuals, product information and scanning functions. It is not a Windows core component. A copy is consistent with the legitimate program when it is installed in a Canon Quick Menu folder and has a valid Canon Inc. digital signature; the filename by itself proves nothing.
Fix the problem in this order: verify the file’s location and signature, scan it with Microsoft Defender, reinstall Quick Menu from Canon for your exact model and Windows edition, resolve any documented TWAIN_32 conflict, then update related drivers. The second location is normal for a 32-bit Canon utility on 64-bit Windows. A legitimate installation normally lists Canon Inc. as the publisher and carries an Authenticode signature. Those details must be checked on your own copy; a reputation label attached to the filename is not proof of authenticity.
Is cnqmupdt.exe safe, or could it be malware?

No authoritative public statistic establishes how often malicious copies of this filename occur. “Danger” scores and “safe” badges on download or file-reference sites are reputation heuristics, not a malware determination for the file on your computer.
How do I find and verify my copy of cnqmupdt.exe?
- Open the running file’s location. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If
cnqmupdt.exeis listed, right-click it and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search the Canon Quick Menu installation folders in File Explorer. Copy the complete path before changing anything. - Compare the path. A normal location is under
CanonQuick MenuinProgram FilesorProgram Files (x86). A path under a Windows system directory, a random temporary folder or a download directory deserves additional scrutiny. - Check the signer. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature and choose Details. Confirm that the signer is Canon Inc. and that Windows reports the signature as valid. How do I scan cnqmupdt.exe with Microsoft Defender?
Windows Security can scan an individual file or folder directly from File Explorer. A normal scan is the least disruptive first check; an offline scan is intended for persistent malware concerns that may survive normal Windows operation.
- In File Explorer, right-click
cnqmupdt.exeand select Scan with Microsoft Defender (the wording may appear under Show more options on newer Windows 11 builds). - Allow the scan to finish and follow Windows Security’s action if it reports a detection. Do not add an exclusion merely to make Quick Menu start.
- If the path is unexpected, the signature fails, or detections return after cleanup, disconnect the PC from sensitive accounts and preserve the path and scan result.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then choose Scan now. Windows restarts into a separate environment and scans before normal Windows processes load, so save work first.
Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified mirror. A clean scan of one file does not make an unexpectedly located copy part of a legitimate Canon installation.

Why do I get a CNQMUPDT.exe error?

An interrupted update, removed files or a corrupt installation can leave the updater present while other Quick Menu components are absent. This commonly produces a missing-file message, an immediate crash or a Quick Menu window that never opens.
A file in TWAIN_32 conflicts with Quick Menu
Canon documents a startup conflict involving a file in the TWAIN_32 folder. Because that folder can contain components used by scanners, webcams and other imaging devices, deleting the conflicting file can disable more than Quick Menu. Canon’s guidance is to move the conflicting file rather than delete it.
Printer, scanner or imaging drivers are out of date
Quick Menu calls the installed Canon device software. A changed Windows build, an incomplete driver update or a graphics component problem can therefore appear as a Quick Menu error even when the updater itself is intact.
The executable is an impersonating or altered copy
An unexpected path, failed signature or recurring Defender detection changes the problem from application repair to security investigation. Do not attempt to fix such a copy by replacing it with another loose executable.

How do I repair cnqmupdt.exe and Canon Quick Menu?
1. Capture the error and identify the failing module
Write down the complete message, when it appears and whether printing or scanning fails as well. Open Event Viewer by searching the Start menu, then go to Windows Logs > Application and look for an error at the same time. The “faulting application” and “faulting module” fields can show whether the failure points to Quick Menu, a Canon component or a device/graphics driver.
2. Reinstall Quick Menu from Canon
- Go to Canon’s support pages and search for the exact printer or scanner model.
- Select the Windows edition actually installed on the PC before downloading the Quick Menu package. Do not substitute a package for a similar model.
- Run the Windows installer and follow its prompts. If an existing installation is offered for removal or repair, complete that process rather than copying a replacement
cnqmupdt.exeover the old file. - Restart Windows when the installer requests it, then test Quick Menu and a basic print or scan operation.
- Repeat the path and signature check on the newly installed file if the error remains.
Using Canon’s model-specific installer restores the related files together and gives you a consistent source for the updater. It is safer than downloading the executable by itself.
3. Resolve the documented TWAIN_32 conflict
- Close Quick Menu and any Canon scanning window. If possible, disconnect the imaging device while changing files.
- Open the
TWAIN_32folder named in Canon’s instructions and identify the file associated with the conflict or the time the problem began. - Create a temporary folder outside
TWAIN_32and move the suspected file into it. Do not permanently delete it. - Restart Quick Menu and test the scanner, webcam and any other TWAIN-dependent device.
- If another device stops working, close the applications and return the moved file to its original location, then seek the correct driver or Canon support guidance instead of repeatedly deleting files.
The reason for moving rather than deleting is reversibility: imaging software may need that component even if Quick Menu does not.
4. Update the device and related Windows drivers
Download the current driver package for the exact Canon model from Canon’s support site. Also install pending Windows updates and, when Event Viewer identifies a graphics module, update the graphics driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer. Restart after each driver family so you can tell which change affected the error.

- Restart Windows after the reinstall or driver change.
- Open Quick Menu without launching another scanner utility first.
- Run one simple scan or print job, then close and reopen Quick Menu.
- Check Event Viewer again if it crashes. A new faulting module indicates that the remaining problem may be outside
cnqmupdt.exe.
6. Uninstall Quick Menu when you do not use it
If you never use Canon’s shortcut, scanning or product-information utility, remove the complete application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps on current Windows, or through Control Panel > Programs and Features on older versions. Uninstalling the associated utility is cleaner than deleting only the updater executable, which can leave broken shortcuts and incomplete program files.

Can I delete cnqmupdt.exe?
Do not delete it solely because it is unfamiliar. If the file belongs to a Quick Menu installation you still use, deleting only the updater can leave that installation inconsistent and will not repair a damaged dependency.
If you have verified that Quick Menu is unwanted, uninstall Quick Menu first.
