configure-endnote.exe is EndNote’s Windows configuration utility, not the main EndNote application. Clarivate uses it to register, repair, or remove EndNote components, especially the Cite While You Write add-in that places EndNote controls in Microsoft Word. A copy installed with EndNote in its normal Program Files folder and carrying an expected publisher signature is generally legitimate. Why is configure-endnote.exe running?
Most legitimate launches have a clear trigger: you started Configure EndNote, EndNote’s installer or updater is finishing a change, or an administrator is repairing the Word add-in. The process can also appear during an uninstall or repair sequence.
- Initial setup: EndNote registers Cite While You Write after the desktop program is installed.
- Office installed later: If EndNote was installed before Microsoft 365 or Office, rerunning the utility adds the integration to the newly installed Word copy.

To inspect a file, right-click it in File Explorer, select Properties, and review Location and Digital Signatures. Select a signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports it as valid. A valid signature supports provenance but does not replace a malware scan.
For an unexpected copy, open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then Scan options. A targeted scan of the file or its containing folder is appropriate; a full scan is sensible if other suspicious behavior is present. Do not run or replace a questionable executable while you are still deciding whether it is genuine.

Check COM Add-ins
- In Word, open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and select Go.
- Look for EndNote Cite While You Write. Select its checkbox and confirm with OK.
- Close and restart Word, then check the ribbon again.
Check Disabled Items
- Return to File > Options > Add-ins.
- Set Manage to Disabled Items and select Go.
- If the EndNote component is listed, select it, choose Enable, and restart Word.
Check Trust Center and ribbon customization
In File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings, review add-in restrictions. A workplace policy may block unsigned or unapproved add-ins, and you may not be allowed to change that policy yourself. Also open File > Options > Customize Ribbon and verify that the EndNote tab is selected. If the component is enabled but policy-controlled, contact the administrator rather than lowering security settings indiscriminately.
How do I fix citations that no longer update?

How do I repair or remove EndNote when Windows cannot install it?
Use Windows’ application controls when the EndNote installer itself is damaged or the normal uninstall does not work.

What should I do if the file is in an unexpected folder?
Treat provenance as unresolved until you verify it. Do not launch the copy merely to see what happens.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and record its full location, creation date, and publisher signature status.
- Use Windows Security to scan the file and its containing folder.
- Check whether a legitimate EndNote installation exists in Program Files. If it does, use that installation’s utility instead of the unexpected copy.
