controlserver.exe is not a unique Windows system file. It is a shared filename used by several products, including Focusrite Control, and the name alone cannot tell you whether a particular copy is legitimate or malicious. Check the executable’s full path, digital signer, SHA-256 hash, parent process, service entry and behavior before deciding what to do.

If the file belongs to Focusrite Control, common fixes are restarting the Focusrite Control Server service, checking the USB or Thunderbolt connection, removing security-software blocks and reinstalling the official application. For a missing, crashing or suspicious copy associated with another program, repair or remove the owning application instead of downloading a replacement EXE.

What is controlserver.exe?

controlserver.exe is a filename, not a single Windows component with one universal purpose. Different vendors can ship executables with the same name, so two files called ControlServer.exe may be unrelated and may have different security properties.

Focusrite’s support documentation identifies C:Program FilesFocusriteFocusrite ControlServerControlServer.exe as part of Focusrite Control. The installation also creates a Windows service named Focusrite Control Server, which manages communication between the software and a compatible audio interface.

File.net has separately associated the name with Advanced SystemCare Auto Sweep from IObit. That report is a lead for checking a local installation, not proof that every controlserver.exe file belongs to that product. HerdProtect also lists a sample from Hangzhou Shunwang Technology Co., Ltd. used by a diskless-system product, commonly at C:Program Filesgcafe mavindisklessdisklesscontrolserver.exe.

Is controlserver.exe safe or a virus?

It can be legitimate, unwanted or malicious. A familiar filename is easy for unrelated software to reuse, and a scan result for one hash does not certify every file with the same name.

Confidence is highest when all of these details agree with software you intentionally installed:

  • The path is inside the owning vendor’s normal program directory.
  • The Digital Signatures tab shows an expected publisher and a valid certificate.
  • The parent process, Windows service and startup trigger match the application.
  • The SHA-256 hash is clean in a reputable multi-engine scanner.
  • The file’s behavior fits the program, such as Focusrite Control communicating with an audio interface.

A file in a temporary, user-profile or randomly named folder, an invalid or missing signature, unexpected network activity, or a new startup entry deserves investigation. None of those signs alone proves malware, but together they justify isolating the file and scanning it rather than allowing it to run normally.

How do I identify the copy running on my PC?

Start with the live process, because the location shown by Windows is more useful than a search for filenames on disk.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Details tab, find controlserver.exe or ControlServer.exe.
  2. Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder.
  3. Record the process’s parent application, command line, startup trigger and any associated service. Task Manager’s Details view can be expanded with columns such as Command line and Publisher.
  4. Right-click the executable, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature and choose Details. Check whether Windows reports that the certificate is valid and whether the signer matches the installed product.
  5. Open an elevated PowerShell window and calculate the hash with Get-FileHash -Path 'C:fullpathcontrolserver.exe' -Algorithm SHA256. Save the result so a scanner report can be matched to this exact file.

Do not rely on a filename search that finds several copies. The process you need to assess is the one currently running or referenced by the error message, service or startup entry.

How should I scan a suspicious controlserver.exe?

Scan the identified file without weakening Windows security. Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and recommends a full Microsoft Defender scan, followed by Defender Offline when unwanted software persists.

  1. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then Protection updates and Check for updates to refresh security intelligence.
  2. Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan and start it. A full scan can take substantially longer than a quick scan.
  3. If suspicious behavior continues, save your work and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a scanning environment before the normal desktop loads, which can make it harder for persistent software to hide.
  4. You may submit the SHA-256 hash, or the file itself if the scanner’s terms allow it, to a reputable multi-engine service. Consider confidentiality before uploading files from work, school or client systems.

Do not add a broad Defender exclusion merely to stop an alert or service error. Microsoft warns that exclusions can leave the device vulnerable, and an exclusion for an unverified executable removes an important safety barrier.

What does a clean scan result actually prove?

A scan result applies to the exact file hash that was analyzed. HerdProtect reported 0 of 68 detections for one Shunwang Technology ControlServer.exe sample in an analysis dated 2026-06-15; that is not a prevalence rate, a guarantee for other copies or evidence that every file with this name is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing a scanner result with your own file, confirm the SHA-256 hash, sample date and file size. A different build, modified copy or replacement from another source must be assessed separately.

How do I fix a controlserver.exe not found or missing error?

Do not download a replacement executable from an EXE or DLL mirror. First determine which program, service or startup entry is requesting the file.

  1. Read the full error dialog and note the application name, path and time of the failure.
  2. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features) for the owning application. If the error appears during startup, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps and the relevant service in services.msc.
  3. If the application is wanted and its path is legitimate, use its official repair option or uninstall and reinstall it from the publisher’s download portal.
  4. If the application is unwanted, uninstall it through Windows first, restart, and then rescan. Remove only leftover startup entries or services after confirming they belong to that uninstalled product.
  5. Run System File Checker or DISM only for broader Windows corruption symptoms; these tools do not replace a missing third-party executable and should not be used to obtain one.

A missing file can be caused by an incomplete update, quarantine, accidental deletion or an application that was removed while a startup entry remained. Repairing the owning program restores the correct version and any required service registration.

How do I fix controlserver.exe crashes or “has stopped working” messages?

A crash identifies a failure, not its cause. Verify the file before troubleshooting performance or compatibility.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Repeat the path, signer and hash checks. If the file is unsigned or stored outside the expected product directory, treat identity verification as the first priority.
  2. Update the owning application and its related drivers from the official publisher. For an audio interface, this includes the interface driver and Focusrite Control version.
  3. Open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs > Application around the crash time. Record the faulting application, faulting module and exception code.
  4. Temporarily close overlays, audio-enhancement utilities or other software that injects into the same process, then retest. Re-enable security controls after testing; do not leave a permanent exclusion.
  5. If the crash remains, use the owning application’s official uninstall and reinstall process. Restart when requested so old services and drivers are unloaded.

Repeated crashes after a clean reinstall can indicate a failing driver, incompatible hardware, damaged system files or a conflict with another startup program. The Event Viewer faulting module helps distinguish those possibilities, but it does not by itself prove malware.

Why does Focusrite Control say “No Hardware Connected” or “No Hardware Detected”?

When the verified path is the Focusrite installation, troubleshoot the service and physical connection before deleting ControlServer.exe.

Restart the Focusrite service

  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find Focusrite Control Server. Right-click it and choose Restart; if it is stopped, choose Start.
  3. If Windows refuses to start it, note the exact service error and check whether third-party firewall or antivirus software has blocked the service.

Focusrite’s support instructions also describe right-clicking ControlServer.exe and choosing Run as Administrator for a manual launch when required. Use that only for the verified Focusrite executable.

Test the connection

  • Disconnect and reconnect the interface directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • Try another compatible USB or Thunderbolt cable.
  • Try another USB or Thunderbolt port, preferably one connected directly to the computer.
  • Check Device Manager for warning icons under the relevant audio, USB or Thunderbolt categories.
  • Confirm that Focusrite Control is installed on the main C: drive, as specified in Focusrite’s troubleshooting guidance.

If a third-party firewall or antivirus product is blocking the service, create only a narrowly scoped, temporary rule after confirming the path and signer. Restore normal protection and remove the test rule if it does not resolve detection.

Reinstall Focusrite Control and its driver

  1. Disconnect the audio interface.
  2. Uninstall Focusrite Control and its driver from Windows’ installed-app list.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Download the current Focusrite Control installer from Focusrite’s official download portal and run it as administrator.
  5. Restart again when installation completes.
  6. Reconnect the interface and test the service and hardware detection.

This sequence replaces the application, service registration and driver together. It is safer than copying a standalone ControlServer.exe from another computer.

What if the file belongs to Advanced SystemCare or another product?

File.net’s Advanced SystemCare Auto Sweep association should be checked against your local path and signer. IObit’s release document describes Advanced SystemCare 19.0.1.158, released 2025-10-14, as a Windows optimization utility with cleanup, startup optimization, software updating and anti-spyware features. That version detail does not identify every historical installation, so use the installed program’s own version and signature when deciding whether it is wanted.

If the path belongs to software you intentionally use, update or repair that software through its publisher. If you do not recognize the program, uninstall it from Windows, remove its startup entry if it remains, restart and run a full Defender scan. Do not delete the executable first, because doing so can leave broken services and scheduled tasks while failing to remove the underlying application.

Why is controlserver.exe using high CPU, memory or network activity?

High resource use can result from a hardware connection loop, a damaged installation, a background scan or unwanted software. It is not proof of infection by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Task Manager, note CPU, memory, disk and network use over several minutes rather than a single spike.
  2. Capture the full path, signer, SHA-256 hash, parent process, service and scheduled-task associations.
  3. Check whether the load begins when a particular application, audio interface or device is connected.
  4. Run the updated full Defender scan and, if necessary, Defender Offline.
  5. Repair, update or uninstall the owning application based on the identity you verified.

For Focusrite Control, test another cable and port and restart the Focusrite Control Server before assuming the process itself is defective. For an unknown copy, isolate it only after recording the evidence needed for a scan or support request.

Can I delete controlserver.exe?

Do not delete an unidentified copy. Deleting an executable can break a legitimate application, leave its service registered, or remove evidence needed to determine what happened.

Use the least destructive remedy that fits the evidence:

What you found Safer action Why
Verified Focusrite path and signer Restart the service, test the connection, or reinstall Focusrite Control. Preserves the correct driver and service registration.
Verified unwanted application Uninstall the application through Windows, restart and rescan. Removes associated services and startup entries more completely than deleting one file.
Suspicious or malicious detection Allow Defender to quarantine or remove it, then run a full or Offline scan. Uses a controlled remediation path and checks for related components.
Unknown identity Leave it in place while you record path, signer and hash, then investigate. Avoids irreversible deletion before the owning program is known.

If Windows reports that the file is in use, that is another reason not to force deletion. Identify the service or parent process and remove the owning software through its supported uninstaller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which troubleshooting path should I choose?

Use the symptom and verified identity together rather than applying every fix to every copy.

  • Missing or not found: identify the application or startup entry, then repair or reinstall that application.
  • Crash or stopped working: verify the signer, update the application and drivers, inspect Event Viewer and reinstall if needed.
  • Focusrite hardware not detected: restart Focusrite Control Server, test another cable and port, check security blocking and reinstall Focusrite Control.
  • High CPU, memory or network use: capture process evidence and scan; do not infer malware from usage alone.
  • Unknown path or signer: avoid deletion and mirrors, isolate only through security software and investigate the hash.

Microsoft or the owning vendor’s support and download pages are preferable to third-party executable mirrors. Keep a record of the original path and hash before making changes so you can explain the problem to the vendor or restore a legitimate installation.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the filename or extension fix controlserver.exe errors?

No. Renaming the file breaks the program’s reference to it and can leave the related service or startup entry unusable. Identify and repair the owning application instead.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I trust a digital signature by itself?

A valid signature shows who signed that particular file and whether the certificate chain is accepted, but it does not prove the file is appropriate for your computer. Compare the signer with the expected installation path and confirm the hash and behavior as well.

Why does Focusrite Control work after a reboot but fail later?

A delayed service start, an intermittent cable or port, or security software that reloads its rules can cause an intermittent detection failure. Check the Focusrite Control Server status and test a different cable or port when the problem is present.

What should I save before contacting support?

Record the exact error text, Windows edition, owning application version, complete executable path, signer status, SHA-256 hash, Event Viewer faulting module and the steps that reproduce the issue. This lets support distinguish an application crash from a service, driver or hardware-connection problem.
