cppwinrt.exe is Microsoft’s C++/WinRT code-generation tool. During a C++ project build, it reads Windows Runtime metadata files (.winmd) and generates C++/WinRT projection headers and implementation scaffolding. A copy supplied by the Windows SDK or the official Microsoft.Windows.CppWinRT NuGet package is legitimate; a filename by itself does not prove that an executable is safe.
The practical fix for most Visual Studio errors is to restore the NuGet package, align Visual Studio and the Windows SDK, use C++17, verify metadata inputs, and then inspect a high-verbosity MSBuild log. The detailed checks below let you validate the file and repair the project without downloading an untrusted replacement.

cppwinrt.exe is the compiler-like code generator behind C++/WinRT. C++/WinRT is a standard modern C++17 language projection for Windows Runtime APIs, implemented as a header-based library. The executable consumes WinRT metadata and emits the headers that let ordinary C++ code call the described Windows APIs, along with generated implementation scaffolding where a project requires it.
The tool normally runs as part of a build rather than as a permanent desktop process. MSBuild targets supplied by the C++/WinRT package discover inputs such as the Windows SDK metadata, NuGet metadata, project metadata, raw .winmd files, and IDL files. They place generated headers and class skeletons in the project’s generated-files directory, after which the compiler and linker use those outputs.

Version 2.0 of C++/WinRT introduced cppwinrt.exe in the Microsoft.Windows.CppWinRT NuGet package. Microsoft still ships an SDK copy for compatibility, but recommends the NuGet-delivered tool for new project build support.
Is cppwinrt.exe safe or malware?
A legitimate copy is safe when its provenance and signature match Microsoft’s development tools. Because other programs can use the same filename, do not make a safety decision from the name alone. Check the complete path, the digital signature, and the package or SDK installation that owns the file.

- Expected origin: the executable is installed with a Windows SDK or with the project’s official
Microsoft.Windows.CppWinRTNuGet package. - Valid signer: File Properties → Digital Signatures identifies Microsoft and Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Build context: Visual Studio or MSBuild launches it while compiling a C++/WinRT project, and the command line refers to metadata, IDL, or generated-file directories belonging to that project.
How to investigate a suspicious copy
- Open Task Manager, right-click the process, choose Open file location, and copy the complete path. In Explorer you can also use the file’s Properties dialog to view the location.
- Open Properties → Digital Signatures. Select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows says the signature is valid and identifies Microsoft.
- Compare the location with the Windows SDK installation or the NuGet package folder used by the affected project. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-download directory, or an unrelated application directory needs additional investigation.
- If the signature is missing or invalid, disconnect the file from the build, quarantine it, and scan it with Windows Security before deleting or replacing it. Do not download a standalone replacement from a random website.
- Restore a missing or damaged executable through Visual Studio, the Windows SDK, or NuGet. Reinstalling the official component is safer than copying an executable from another computer.
There is no published malware-prevalence statistic that can classify every file named cppwinrt.exe. The defensible test is provenance: an SDK or official package origin plus a valid Microsoft signature is expected; anything else should be treated as untrusted until verified.
Why is cppwinrt.exe running on my PC?
It usually runs because Visual Studio or MSBuild is building a C++/WinRT project. The build invokes it when metadata or IDL has changed, when generated files are missing, or when a clean or incremental build needs to regenerate projection headers. It may appear briefly in Task Manager and consume CPU or disk while generation is in progress.
If it remains active after Visual Studio has finished, check whether a build is repeatedly restarting, a custom target is invoking it in a loop, or the project is failing before generated files are written. The executable itself is not a normal Windows background service and should not be configured to start with Windows.
Where should cppwinrt.exe be located?
There is no single universal path. The location depends on whether the project uses the compatibility copy in the Windows SDK or the package copy restored by NuGet. A legitimate path should be inside a Windows SDK installation or the project’s NuGet package/tooling tree, not beside a game, browser, temporary download, or unrelated utility.

How do I fix the “C++/WinRT VSIX no longer provides project build support” error?
This message means the project still expects the old Visual Studio extension (VSIX) to provide build targets, but the current setup requires the NuGet package. Install or update the package, then remove obsolete VSIX-era entries.
- In Visual Studio, open Project → Manage NuGet Packages.
- Search for
Microsoft.Windows.CppWinRT, select the official Microsoft package, and install or update it for the affected project. - Close and reopen the solution if Visual Studio asks, then run Build → Clean Solution followed by Build → Rebuild Solution.
- Open the project file and look for obsolete
<RequiredBundles>entries that nameMicrosoft.Windows.CppWinRT. After the NuGet reference is installed, remove those old entries as directed by Microsoft’s migration guidance. - Restore packages and rebuild. The package’s MSBuild targets should now supply the code-generation step and generated-file settings.
Do not keep both a hand-copied executable and the package target in an attempt to “force” the build. That can make Visual Studio call a different version than the one whose targets configured the project.
How do I fix an unsupported Visual Studio or Windows SDK setup?
Use Visual Studio 2022 or later, install the Universal Windows Platform development workload with its C++ tools, and select Windows SDK 10.0.17134.0 or later. C++/WinRT support was introduced in SDK version 10.0.17134.0, corresponding to Windows 10 version 1803.
- Open the Visual Studio Installer and choose Modify for your Visual Studio installation.
- On Workloads, enable Universal Windows Platform development. In the individual components view, make sure the C++ tools and a Windows SDK are selected.
- Return to the project’s properties and confirm that the chosen Windows SDK version is installed on the machine and selected for the solution.
- Restart Visual Studio, restore NuGet packages, and rebuild. If several SDKs are installed, test with the SDK selected by the project rather than assuming the newest one is being used.
Older projects can still contain SDK-era assumptions. Updating the package and explicitly selecting a supported SDK generally gives a more predictable build than copying files from a newer SDK into an older installation.
How do I set the C++ standard required by C++/WinRT?
C++/WinRT projects use C++17. In Visual Studio, open Project → Properties → C/C++ → Language → C++ Language Standard and select ISO C++17 Standard (/std:c++17). Apply the setting to the configuration and platform that actually fail; setting it only for Debug will not repair a Release build.

After changing the standard, clean and rebuild so headers generated under an older language mode are not mistaken for current output. If the project uses property sheets or multiple projects, check each project that consumes the generated headers.
How do I fix linker and generated-header errors?
Package integration normally adds the generated-files include paths and the compiler and linker options needed by C++/WinRT. Microsoft’s documented setup can add /bigobj, /await, and a WindowsApp.lib dependency where the project needs them.
Check the generated include path
Open Project → Properties → C/C++ → General → Additional Include Directories and verify that the generated-files directory used by the package is present. Prefer the package’s MSBuild targets over hard-coding a path, because the generated directory and package version can change.
Check linker inputs
For unresolved Windows Runtime symbols, inspect Linker → Input → Additional Dependencies and the project’s library settings. Add WindowsApp.lib only when the documented project setup requires it, and make sure the selected Windows SDK supplies the library for the active architecture.
Check compiler options
Large generated headers can require /bigobj. Projects using coroutine support may require /await depending on their configuration. If the NuGet package is installed, first allow its targets to apply the supported settings; manually duplicating options can create conflicting values.
How do I fix errors caused by missing .winmd or IDL inputs?
cppwinrt.exe cannot generate a projection when the metadata or IDL named by the build is missing, moved, or excluded from the project. The package targets can discover SDK metadata, package metadata, project metadata, raw .winmd files, and IDL inputs, but the files still have to exist and be reachable at build time.

- Read the first generation error and record the exact
.winmdor IDL path it reports. - Confirm the file exists at that path and that its project item or package reference has not been removed.
- For an IDL file, check its item properties and build action. For a raw
.winmd, verify that the reference points to the intended architecture-independent metadata file rather than a stale output directory. - Restore the package or regenerate the metadata if it is an output of another project. Build the producing project first when the consuming project depends on its generated
.winmd. - Clean the solution and rebuild so stale generated headers are replaced with output from the current metadata.
Changing include paths will not repair a genuinely missing metadata input. Fix the path or project dependency first.
How can I get useful diagnostics from MSBuild?
Normal Visual Studio output can hide the command line and the input that caused the failure. Increase C++/WinRT verbosity from a Developer Command Prompt or another shell where MSBuild is available:
msbuild project.vcxproj /verbosity:minimal /property:CppWinRTVerbosity=high
Replace project.vcxproj with the actual project file. The resulting output should reveal the package version, selected SDK, metadata or IDL paths, generated-files directory, and the first cppwinrt.exe error.
For complex failures, capture a binary MSBuild log and open it with Microsoft’s MSBuild Binary and Structured Log Viewer. Preserve the first error rather than starting with the final cascade of compiler messages. Record:
- the first
cppwinrt.exeerror and its complete command line; - the C++/WinRT package version;
- the Windows SDK version selected by the project;
- the Visual Studio version and active configuration/platform;
- the input
.winmdor IDL path; - the generated-files directory and whether it contains the expected headers.
This information distinguishes a missing package from a metadata, toolchain, or linker problem before you change multiple settings at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which repair route should I use: SDK copy or NuGet package?
Both can produce working builds, but they solve different maintenance problems. The SDK copy is retained for compatibility; the NuGet package is the preferred current integration because its MSBuild targets travel with the project reference.

If an old project builds only with the SDK copy, migrate deliberately: install the package, remove obsolete VSIX bundle entries, verify generated paths, and compare a clean build. Do not delete the SDK copy until every project that depends on compatibility settings has been tested.
What should I do if cppwinrt.exe is missing, unsigned, or in the wrong folder?
Stop the build that is calling the questionable file and preserve its path and signature details. Then identify whether the project expects the SDK copy or the NuGet package.

Can I prevent cppwinrt.exe errors from returning?
Keep the project’s toolchain reproducible. Commit the NuGet package reference and project settings, document the required Visual Studio and SDK versions, and avoid absolute paths that point into one developer’s temporary directories. Build the producing metadata project before consumers, and use clean rebuilds after changing IDL, package versions, or SDK selections.
- Use the official package rather than a manually copied executable for new projects.
- Keep C++17 enabled in every configuration that ships.
- Review generated-file and metadata paths after upgrading Visual Studio.
- Save a high-verbosity log when a migration first succeeds, so a later failure can be compared with a known-good command line.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete cppwinrt.exe after a build finishes?
Do not delete it while Visual Studio or another build is using the project. Removing the SDK or package copy can break later builds; if you need to remove it, uninstall or change the owning SDK or NuGet package through the supported installer or package manager instead of deleting one file.
Recommended Free Tools
Does cppwinrt.exe compile C# or ordinary desktop C++ programs?
Its job is specifically to generate C++/WinRT projections from Windows Runtime metadata. A project that does not consume WinRT APIs or C++/WinRT headers normally has no reason to invoke it, even if it is built with the same Visual Studio installation.
Why does cppwinrt.exe appear more than once in a build log?
Separate projects or configurations can each run their own generation target, and an incremental build may regenerate outputs after metadata changes. Compare the command lines and input paths; identical invocations repeating without a file change suggest a custom target or build dependency loop.
How can I tell which C++/WinRT package version my project actually uses?
In Visual Studio, open Project → Manage NuGet Packages and select the Installed tab for the project. You can also inspect the project file or packages lock information, then compare that version with the tool path and package assets shown in a high-verbosity MSBuild log.
