cygpath.exe is the Cygwin utility behind the cygpath command. It translates Windows paths into Cygwin’s POSIX-style paths and converts them back for Windows programs. A copy inside the Cygwin installation is expected; a copy in a download, temporary directory, or unrelated application folder should be treated as unverified until you check its location and installation source.
Most errors are caused by launching the wrong shell, an incomplete PATH, incorrect output mode, spaces or backslashes that were not quoted, or multiple Cygwin installations. The steps below show how to identify the genuine executable, convert paths correctly, repair common failures, and collect diagnostics when the problem persists.

What is cygpath.exe and why is it on my PC?
cygpath.exe is a command-line program installed with Cygwin. Cygwin supplies a Unix-like environment on Windows, while Windows applications continue to expect native Windows filenames. The official Cygwin manual describes cygpath as a utility that converts Windows native filenames to Cygwin POSIX-style pathnames and vice versa.
For example, a Cygwin shell may represent a file as /home/alex/notes.txt, while a Windows application needs C:cygwin64homealexnotes.txt. cygpath performs that translation without requiring you to edit the path by hand.

The executable can also report special Windows locations, including the Windows directory, system directory, Desktop and profile root. It is normally launched from a Cygwin terminal or by a script that needs to pass a path to a native Windows program.
Where a legitimate copy is normally found
Setup installs Cygwin programs below the Cygwin root, commonly in a directory such as C:cygwin64bin (your installation may use another root). The exact path is determined when Cygwin is installed. In a Cygwin terminal, run:

A result under the intended Cygwin bin directory is consistent with a normal installation. A result in a temporary folder, a browser-download directory or an application directory that you do not recognize needs further verification.
Is cygpath.exe safe?
It is normally safe when it is the copy installed as part of Cygwin, but the filename alone does not prove authenticity. Safety here is a provenance judgment: verify where the file came from and whether it belongs to the Cygwin installation you intended to use.
How Cygwin verifies official packages
The official Cygwin Setup program downloads a package list from a mirror. That list contains package hashes and lengths, and Setup checks the package-list signature unless signature checking has explicitly been disabled with the -X option. Installing or updating through the official Setup workflow gives you a stronger provenance check than copying a file from an unknown archive.
If you find an unexpected cygpath.exe, do not run it merely because its name looks familiar. Record its full path, compare it with the Cygwin root you chose, and reinstall or update Cygwin through the official installer if you cannot establish where the file came from.

What Cygwin’s security caveat means
Cygwin’s project documentation says its DLL has no known feature intended to grant a user privileges beyond that user’s Windows rights. The same documentation cautions that Cygwin is not guaranteed to be as secure as the Windows system hosting it. That is a general security qualification, not evidence that a normal cygpath.exe is malware.
What do the cygpath options mean?
Choose the output mode according to the program that will consume the result. The default is Cygwin/POSIX output.

Do not assume that -d can always produce a short name. If 8.3-name generation is disabled, there may be no DOS alias to return, and a program that requires one may still reject the path.
How do I convert a Cygwin path to a Windows path?
Run cygpath --windows (or -w) in a Cygwin terminal. The command prints a Windows-style path that you can pass to a native application.
cygpath --windows ~/.bashrcTo request an absolute result at the same time, combine the options:
cygpath -aw ~/.bashrcUse the output in command substitution when launching a Windows program. Quoting the substitution protects spaces in the resulting filename:
notepad.exe "$(cygpath -aw 'Desktop/Phone Numbers.txt')"Here the shell expands ~ and the relative Desktop path, cygpath converts it, and notepad.exe receives a native Windows filename.
When mixed slashes are easier
Some Windows tools accept forward slashes. In that case, use -m:
cygpath -am 'Desktop/Phone Numbers.txt'Mixed output can be easier to embed in shell scripts because backslashes have a special meaning in Bash. It is still Windows syntax; choose it only when the target program accepts forward slashes.

Use cygpath --unix (or -u) and quote a Windows path that contains spaces:

cygpath --unix 'C:/cygwin/bin/ls.exe'The output is suitable for Cygwin commands and scripts. Forward slashes in the input avoid most Bash escaping issues. If you must type backslashes inside a Bash command, remember that backslashes are escape characters; double them where necessary or use careful quoting.
Passing a converted path to another command
Keep the conversion and the consuming command in the same quoted expression when possible:
ls -l "$(cygpath --unix 'C:/Users/Alex/Documents/Game Saves')"If the target is a Windows executable, reverse the direction and request Windows output instead. Windows programs do not understand Cygwin POSIX pathnames, so a native program must receive Windows or DOS syntax, either directly or through cygpath.
How do I convert a PATH or classpath list?
A list of directories is not the same as one filename. Cygwin uses colon separators, while Windows uses semicolons. Add -p so cygpath converts the separators and each entry for the receiving environment.
javac -cp "$(cygpath -pw "$CLASSPATH")" hello.javaThe inner expansion reads the Cygwin value of CLASSPATH; -p produces a Windows-style semicolon-delimited list, and -w requests Windows path spelling. Without -p, a list can be mistaken for one path and passed with the wrong separators.
Why does cygpath say “command not found”?
This message means the current shell cannot find cygpath.exe through its command search path. It does not by itself mean the executable is missing or unsafe.
- Open the terminal created by Cygwin Setup. Do not begin in an unrelated Windows command prompt if you intend to use Cygwin commands. The Cygwin terminal initializes the environment expected by its tools.
- Inspect the active search path.
echo "$PATH"The normal Cygwin ordering places
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/binbefore inherited Windows directories. In particular,/usr/binshould precede Windows system directories so the shell resolves the intended Cygwin tools first. - Ask the shell what it can resolve.
type -a cygpathIf nothing is returned, the relevant Cygwin
bindirectory is not available to this shell. If several paths appear, the first one is the command Bash will use. - Restart after changing the environment. Close and reopen the Cygwin terminal so its startup files and inherited variables are loaded again. Then repeat
type -a cygpath.
A Windows command prompt has different path rules. If you deliberately need to run the executable there, call the copy by its full Windows path, but remember that Cygwin path arguments and Windows path arguments are not interchangeable.
How do I fix a wrong conversion or garbled filename?
Most malformed output comes from selecting the wrong mode or allowing the shell to reinterpret spaces and backslashes.

-ufor Cygwin/POSIX output,-wfor Windows backslashes, and-mfor Windows forward slashes. - Quote every input containing spaces, parentheses or shell metacharacters, for example
cygpath -w 'Desktop/Phone Numbers.txt'. - In Bash, treat backslashes as escapes. Prefer a forward-slash Windows input such as
C:/Users/Alex/file.txt, or use quoting and doubled backslashes when a literal backslash is required. - Do not use ordinary single-path conversion for a
PATHor classpath list. Use-pso both separators and entries are translated.
If the printed path looks right but the receiving application still rejects it, check the application’s expected syntax. A native Windows program generally needs Windows or DOS form, not a path beginning with /c/ or /home/.
What if a Windows program rejects the converted path?
First convert to Windows form and make the complete result absolute. Then retry with mixed slashes if the program accepts them.

- If backslashes cause parsing problems in a script, use
cygpath -amand pass the forward-slash result. - If the program expects a list of directories, use
-prather than converting the list as one filename.
For very long or unusual names, add -r to request the root-local \? prefix:
cygpath -awr 'relative/or unusually long path'The root-local form can bypass the traditional 260-byte MAX_PATH limitation where the receiving Windows application supports it. An application that does not understand extended-length syntax may still reject the result, so test the target program’s path support rather than assuming -r is universal.
Why does the DOS 8.3 option fail?
cygpath -d requests a DOS 8.3 name, but Windows and individual filesystems can disable short-name generation. In that situation no short alias exists to return, or the receiving application may ignore it. Use normal Windows output unless the legacy application specifically requires 8.3 syntax, and verify that short names are actually available on the volume.
How do I diagnose multiple Cygwin installations?
Concurrent installations can put different cygpath.exe files on different search paths. The shell may therefore execute a copy from an older or unintended Cygwin root.

- Run
type -a cygpathand note every returned location. - Check

- If it came from an archive, download or temporary directory and you do not recognize the source, remove the untrusted copy only after confirming that no required application depends on it.
- Use
type -a cygpathand your shell’sPATHto ensure an unexpected copy is not taking precedence. - When provenance remains uncertain, obtain Cygwin again through its official installer so package metadata and signatures are checked.
The name cygpath.exe is not an authenticity check. Location, installation provenance and the signed package workflow provide the meaningful evidence.
Which Windows versions and Cygwin release details matter?
Cygwin documentation currently lists DLL version 3.6.12 and support for recent x86_64 Windows versions beginning with Windows 8.1. Release and compatibility information can change, so verify the current requirements in the Cygwin documentation and Setup program before installing on a different Windows edition or architecture.

Can a script use cygpath reliably?
Yes, provided the script controls the shell environment and quotes both input and output. Use explicit options instead of relying on the default when a script may be read by someone working in another environment.
- Declare whether the consumer needs POSIX, Windows-backslash or mixed-slash output.
- Use
-awhen a relative path could resolve differently depending on the script’s working directory. - Use
-pfor lists and document whether the target expects colons or semicolons. - Quote command substitutions, especially when filenames can contain spaces.
- Use
type -a cygpathduring troubleshooting to detect a different installation being selected.
These practices address the two boundaries that cause most failures: the shell parses the command first, and the receiving program then applies its own path syntax.
What is the safest practical workflow?
- Start the Cygwin terminal installed by Setup.
- Confirm the executable with
type -a cygpath. - Inspect
echo "$PATH"if the command is missing or the wrong copy appears first. - Select the output mode:
-u,-w,-m,-dor-p. - Quote paths containing spaces and handle Bash backslashes carefully.
- Add
-afor absolute output and-rfor a root-local long-path form when the target supports it. - If the executable’s location is unexpected, stop using that copy and reinstall or update through official Cygwin Setup.
- Run
cygcheck -s -v -r -h > cygcheck_output.txtwhen multiple installations or persistent errors remain.

Can I call cygpath.exe from PowerShell?
Yes, but PowerShell and Cygwin use different quoting and environment rules. Invoke the executable through its full Windows path or from a configured Cygwin environment, and pass the input in the syntax expected by the command; test the exact command with a filename containing spaces before putting it in a script.
Why does cygpath -d produce no useful short name?
The DOS option depends on an 8.3 alias existing for the file. Windows or the underlying filesystem may have short-name generation disabled, so a short form may not be available even though the long Windows path works.
What does the \? prefix mean in a cygpath result?
It is the Windows root-local path prefix requested by -r. It is intended for long or unusual paths, but the application receiving the path must support extended-length Windows syntax.
Should I copy cygpath.exe to another computer?
