DaumCleaner.exe is the main executable of the legacy Daum Cleaner Windows utility, historically attributed to Kakao Corp. A version 1.5 software inventory places the legitimate program in C:Program FilesDaumCleaner, alongside DaumCleanerAdmin.exe, DaumCleanerService.exe and Uninstall.exe. The filename alone is not a malware verdict: documented malware has tried to terminate a process with this name, while an impostor can also copy it. There is a second reason the name can appear in a security report. McAfee Labs documented RunningRat, a remote-access Trojan that operates with two DLLs, dropping a batch file that attempted to terminate the daumcleaner.exe task. Fraunhofer FKIE documented the same behavior. That evidence shows malware may target a legitimate Daum Cleaner process; it does not show that every DaumCleaner.exe is RunningRat or that the legitimate utility is itself a Trojan.
Microsoft’s guidance on uncommon software is useful here: an uncommon program is not automatically malicious, but the risk is higher for typical users and later reputation analysis may classify it as malware or potentially unwanted software. Treat an unknown copy as unverified until you check its location, signature and behavior.

How can I tell whether my copy is legitimate?
Use several independent checks. A path or signature by itself is evidence, not a guarantee.
1. Record the complete file path
In File Explorer or Task Manager, open the file’s location and copy the full path. The historical legitimate location is C:Program FilesDaumCleanerDaumCleaner.exe. A location under %TEMP%, a browser download folder, an email attachment directory or an unfamiliar application’s data folder is inconsistent with that installation record and should be treated as suspicious until scanned.
2. Check the publisher and digital signature
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it is present. Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer corresponds to the installed Daum application. An absent or invalid signature does not prove malware, especially for old software, but it removes an important piece of supporting evidence.
3. Compare the installed application
On Windows 11 or 10, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Daum Cleaner. On older Windows editions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Confirm that the listed application points to the same folder you inspected. If no Daum Cleaner installation exists, a standalone executable has no obvious software record and should not be trusted merely because its name looks familiar.

4. Look at startup, service and parent-process behavior
Open Task Manager > Startup apps and note any Daum entry, then use Task Manager > Details to locate the running process and choose Open file location. If a service is present, open services.msc and record its display name and executable path before changing anything. In Task Manager, the process that launched the executable can provide additional context; a browser, script host or an unknown temporary executable is more concerning than the installed Daum folder. Do not delete a service or registry value until you have recorded its path and confirmed whether the program is installed.
5. Scan before making a judgement
Update Microsoft Defender, then run a full scan. If unwanted software continues to return, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Offline scanning restarts Windows and checks before the normal desktop loads, which can help when a running process interferes with cleanup. A detection should be evaluated together with the path and parent process; a warning is a reason to investigate, not a basis for claiming that every file with this name is malicious.
Why is daumcleaner.exe running on my PC?
A running process generally means the old utility was installed with a startup entry or service and Windows launched it when you signed in or booted. It can also be started manually, by another component in the same installation or by a different program that happens to use the same filename.
Open the file location from Task Manager and compare it with the installed application’s path. If it is the historical Daum Cleaner directory and the utility appears in Installed apps, the process is probably an old program you can remove if you no longer need it. If it starts from an unexpected directory, has no matching installation or is repeatedly recreated after deletion, stop treating it as a simple obsolete startup item and complete the Defender and parent-process checks first.
How do I fix a daumcleaner.exe missing or startup error?
Most missing-file messages after a reboot are orphaned startup references left behind by an incomplete uninstall. Fix the reference through the program’s normal uninstall path rather than downloading a replacement executable.
- Identify the path in the error. Use the message, Event Viewer entry or Task Manager startup item to find the exact path Windows is trying to launch. Compare it with
C:Program FilesDaumCleaner. - Check Installed apps or Programs and Features. If Daum Cleaner is listed and you do not need this legacy utility, select it and choose Uninstall. Microsoft recommends uninstalling software that is not needed instead of leaving an obsolete component in place.
- Use the bundled uninstaller when Windows has no entry. If the verified installation folder remains, run its
Uninstall.exeas an administrator. Use this only when the folder and publisher checks support that it is the installed program; do not run an unknown copy downloaded from elsewhere. - Remove only the confirmed startup reference. After uninstalling, return to Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable or remove the Daum entry only after confirming that its path belongs to the uninstalled program. If the entry is marked as a missing file, disabling it prevents the popup while you investigate the leftover reference.
- Restart and verify. Reboot Windows, confirm that the popup is gone, and check that no Daum process or service from the old folder has returned. Run a Defender scan if the file reappears or if the startup entry points somewhere unexpected.
Do not copy a similarly named executable into the missing path. A replacement can hide the original problem, introduce a modified program and make later forensic checks harder.

What should I do if DaumCleaner.exe behaves unexpectedly?
Unexpected behavior includes repeated crashes, network activity you did not expect, a process that returns after you end it, or a security product reporting that it was terminated. Follow this order so that you preserve useful evidence while reducing risk.
Preserve identifying details
Write down the complete path, file size and file version shown in Properties, the publisher or signature status, the time the behavior began and the process that launched it. If a security alert names a parent process, record that name and path before closing the alert.
Run current Defender scans
Update Defender definitions and run a full scan. If the behavior persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security. Do not disable protection simply to keep the process running.
Investigate a termination report
McAfee’s description of RunningRat says, “This batch file attempts to kill the task daumcleaner.exe; a Korean security program.” Therefore, a report that a suspicious process terminated DaumCleaner.exe can indicate an attack against the process rather than an infection by Daum Cleaner itself. Examine the terminating process, its location and the Defender results before deciding whether to restore or remove anything.
Remove an obsolete legitimate installation
If scans are clean, the path and signature match the installed utility, and you no longer use it, uninstall Daum Cleaner through Windows or its verified Uninstall.exe. Then restart and scan again. If the executable is not associated with an installed program, quarantine or remove it only through the security product’s normal workflow after you have recorded the path and alert details.
Can I delete daumcleaner.exe manually?
Manual deletion is appropriate only after you have established that the file belongs to an obsolete or unwanted installation and have stopped its associated startup or service entry. Deleting the main executable first can leave a broken service, a recurring startup error or other files behind. Never delete a file solely because its name appeared in a malware report. The documented RunningRat behavior targets the task; it does not identify every file bearing that name. Conversely, do not keep an unknown copy just because it is located under a folder named Daum. Location, signature, installation record and scan results must agree.
What downloads should I avoid?
Do not obtain a standalone DaumCleaner.exe or DLL from a download mirror, “missing DLL” site or a search-result installer. KISA reported about 560 downloads during a fake KakaoTalk campaign running from February 10 through April 14, 2026, and advised users to use the official site and verify the domain. AhnLab ASEC also documented search-engine-poisoned installers that executed shellcode and loaded malicious DLLs. Those campaigns concerned KakaoTalk, but they demonstrate why an old Daum component should never be replaced with an unverified download.
If you genuinely need Korean software, navigate to the vendor’s official domain yourself, check the spelling and HTTPS connection, and obtain the installer only from that site. For an obsolete utility with no verified current support package, removal and scanning are safer than trying to reconstruct the installation from individual files.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek help?
Stop experimenting with replacement files if the executable is unsigned, appears in an unexpected directory, is recreated after removal, or is accompanied by unknown services, scripts or additional DLLs. Disconnect the affected PC from unnecessary networks, preserve the alert and path information, run Microsoft Defender Offline and use a trusted support channel for incident response. Do not upload a potentially sensitive executable to a public analysis service without considering privacy and organizational policy.
If the only problem is a startup popup from a verified, obsolete installation, uninstalling the utility and removing its confirmed startup entry is usually enough. If the same popup returns from a different path, treat that as a separate executable and repeat the verification process rather than assuming the original uninstall failed.
