dfsrdiag.exe is Microsoft’s command-line diagnostic and administration utility for Distributed File System Replication (DFSR), mainly used on Windows Server domain controllers and replication members. A genuine Microsoft copy is a legitimate tool, but the filename alone does not prove that a local executable is authentic. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature before running it. Most commands inspect replication or ask a member to poll Active Directory; SYSVOL recovery commands can change replication state across a domain and require much greater care. The practical fix is to identify whether the failure is DFSR, Active Directory convergence, SYSVOL, or DFS Namespaces, then use the command and recovery procedure that matches that failure domain.
What is dfsrdiag.exe and why is it on Windows Server?
dfsrdiag.exe is a Microsoft command-line utility for diagnosing and administering Distributed File System Replication. DFSR synchronizes folders between configured members, and in an Active Directory domain it is also used to replicate the SYSVOL folder that carries Group Policy and logon scripts. Administrators use dfsrdiag to ask a member to refresh its view of configuration, inspect files waiting to replicate, dump machine-level DFSR settings, and support documented SYSVOL recovery procedures.

The tool is normally relevant to Windows Server domain environments rather than ordinary home PCs. Seeing it invoked on a server can therefore be routine, especially during a replication investigation, a SYSVOL migration, or a recovery operation. It is not a general-purpose file cleaner or a consumer troubleshooting program.
The similar name dfsdiag.exe causes frequent confusion. It is a separate Microsoft utility for DFS Namespaces, not DFS Replication. Its tests cover domain controllers, sites, namespace configuration, integrity, and referrals. Running a namespace diagnostic when the problem is a replication backlog will send you toward the wrong failure domain.

Is dfsrdiag.exe safe to run?
A genuine Microsoft binary is legitimate, but safety depends on both authenticity and the command you run. Polling Active Directory and viewing a backlog are generally diagnostic or polling operations. Authoritative SYSVOL recovery is not a routine check: it changes replication state and can affect every domain controller.
Verify the executable before using it
Do not trust a copy merely because its name is dfsrdiag.exe. Malware or an altered utility can use a familiar filename. Use Windows Explorer or PowerShell to inspect the file’s properties and confirm that Microsoft is the signer on the Digital Signatures tab. Check the complete path, creation and modification details, and whether the file is in a location expected for the server’s installed tooling. There is no single documented filesystem path or signature thumbprint that applies to every Windows build, so do not treat a remembered path as proof.
If the file arrived in a download folder, from an email, or from another computer, stop and validate it rather than copying it into a system directory. When the expected tool is missing, first confirm that you are on the correct server role and that the relevant Windows Server administration components are installed.
Use an elevated prompt only when the task requires it
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell with Run as administrator when the procedure or your role requires elevated access. Read-only inspection may work with ordinary rights, while changes to domain configuration or SYSVOL recovery require the permissions assigned to your domain-administration process. Elevation does not make an unsafe command safe; it only gives the command more authority.
What is the difference between dfsrdiag.exe and dfsdiag.exe?
dfsrdiag.exe diagnoses the DFS Replication service and its replicated folders. dfsdiag.exe diagnoses DFS Namespaces and referral behavior. Select the utility from the symptom, not from the similar spelling.
| Utility | Primary scope | Typical questions | Failure domain |
|---|---|---|---|
dfsrdiag.exe |
Distributed File System Replication | Did configuration reach a member? Which files are waiting? What are the member’s DFSR settings? Is SYSVOL recovering? | DFSR service, Active Directory convergence, replicated folders, or SYSVOL |
dfsdiag.exe |
Distributed File System Namespaces | Can a client locate a namespace target? Are referrals, sites, or namespace configuration behaving correctly? | DFS Namespace configuration, domain-controller discovery, sites, referrals, or namespace integrity |
A namespace referral problem can exist while DFSR is healthy, and a replication backlog can exist while namespace referrals work normally. Keep the two investigations separate in your notes and commands.

What do the main dfsrdiag commands do?
Each command answers a different operational question. Start with the least invasive command that can distinguish the likely cause.
| Command or method | What it checks or changes | Output and side effects |
|---|---|---|
dfsrdiag.exe /? |
Shows the commands and syntax available on that installation. | Console help; no replication change. |
dfsrdiag.exe PollAD /Member:DOMAINServer1 |
Asks the named replication member to poll its closest domain controller immediately for DFSR configuration changes. | Console result and subsequent DFSR events; it requests an earlier configuration poll but does not itself repair a broken topology. |
DFSRDIAG BACKLOG |
Reports files that have not yet replicated between a source and destination in a replicated folder. | Console list and count of pending updates; inspection only. |
Get-DfsrBacklog -GroupName <group> -FolderName <folder> -SourceComputerName <source> -DestinationComputerName <destination> |
PowerShell equivalent for a partner backlog query. | PowerShell records; with -Verbose, the cmdlet can show the first 100 records and a total count. |
dfsrdiag DumpMachineCfg /Mem:<member> |
Displays machine-configuration values such as the debug-log path, polling interval, and RPC port assignment. | Console configuration output; inspection only. |
Write-DfsrHealthReport |
Builds a health report for administrative review across DFSR members. | Creates an HTML report and an associated XML file; it does not by itself change replication. |
Use the exact member, group, and folder names from your environment. A syntactically valid command aimed at the wrong member can produce a technically correct answer to the wrong question.
How do I fix dfsrdiag.exe errors on Windows Server?
Fix the underlying replication condition rather than replacing the executable blindly. Work through the following sequence and keep the command output and event records with the incident.
- Record the scope before changing anything. Write down the exact error text, server name, replication group and folder, whether SYSVOL or NETLOGON is affected, and when the problem began. Capture recent DFSR event IDs and note whether the symptom is limited to one member or appears across the domain.
- Confirm that the problem is DFSR. If the complaint concerns namespace referrals, target selection, or namespace integrity, investigate
dfsdiag.exeinstead. If Group Policy and logon scripts are missing, treat it as a SYSVOL/NETLOGON issue and avoid generic file-copy fixes. - Validate the binary and syntax. Check the file’s Microsoft signature and expected installation context. From an elevated prompt, run
dfsrdiag.exe /?. A command-not-found result, an unrecognized switch, or a file that fails signature validation is a tooling problem to resolve before interpreting replication output. - Refresh a member’s Active Directory configuration view. After an intended AD configuration change has replicated, run
dfsrdiag.exe PollAD /Member:DOMAINServer1for the affected member. Normal AD replication and DFSR’s polling interval can otherwise delay the member’s awareness of the change. PollAD does not force other domain controllers to converge and does not rebuild a damaged membership. - Measure partner lag. Run the documented
DFSRDIAG BACKLOGquery for the source, destination, replication group, and folder involved. If you prefer PowerShell, useGet-DfsrBacklog -GroupName <group> -FolderName <folder> -SourceComputerName <source> -DestinationComputerName <destination>. Add-Verbosewhen you need the first 100 records plus a total count. - Interpret the backlog with context. A backlog indicates latency, and it may be expected for your configuration and rate of change. Compare the age of the oldest pending item, the normal change rate, network conditions, partner connectivity, staging behavior, and DFSR events. A large count alone is not proof of corruption.
- Compare members with a health report. Run
Write-DfsrHealthReportwhen a multi-member view is needed. Open the generated HTML and its associated XML, then compare them with the DFSR event log. A report can show sharing-violation activity even after files have replicated; use a current backlog query to determine whether updates are still pending. - Inspect machine-level settings when timing or transport is suspect. Use
dfsrdiag DumpMachineCfg /Mem:<member>to review the debug-log path, polling interval, and RPC port assignment. Compare the affected member with a healthy partner and preserve the original output before making configuration changes. - Check SYSVOL state and content freshness. For SYSVOL or NETLOGON symptoms, review DFSR events and the member’s state before altering membership attributes. On Windows Server 2012 and later domain controllers, Microsoft documents
MaxOfflineTimeInDaysas 60 when content-freshness protection is enabled. Event 4012 means the freshness limit was exceeded; it is a protection condition, not a signal to delete or manually share SYSVOL. - Choose the documented recovery path. If one domain controller needs to obtain a good SYSVOL copy, use Microsoft’s non-authoritative SYSVOL recovery procedure. Use authoritative recovery only when the scenario requires designating one domain-wide source of truth. Follow the procedure’s Active Directory attribute changes, replication checks, service-state checks, and verification steps in order.
- Recheck after convergence. Allow normal AD and DFSR replication to propagate, poll the affected member when the procedure calls for it, and then rerun the backlog or health report. Confirm that SYSVOL and NETLOGON are available from the intended domain controllers and that the relevant event sequence has settled.
Why does PollAD appear to do nothing?
PollAD only asks a member to read its closest domain controller sooner; it cannot compensate for incomplete AD replication, a disabled or unhealthy member, or a topology problem.

Active Directory has not converged
If the changed attribute has not reached the domain controller that the member polls, the member can successfully poll and still see the old configuration. Check AD replication status and the DFSR events on both sides, allow convergence, and poll again rather than repeating the command indefinitely.
The member is not in a usable DFSR state
A disabled membership, stopped service, or failed initialization can prevent a useful configuration refresh. Confirm the member and service state in the event log and administration tools before changing any attributes.

The command targeted the wrong host
Use the fully qualified domain and server names from the actual replication topology. A successful response for another member does not prove that the affected member received the change.
What does a large DFSR backlog mean?
A backlog is the set of updates the destination has not yet received from the specified source. It is a measurement of pending work, not a diagnosis of corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Expected latency: A busy folder, a burst of changes, or a scheduled network window can create a temporary queue.
- Persistent growth: If the count and oldest-item age keep increasing, investigate partner connectivity, network throughput, staging capacity, service events, and whether the destination is processing changes at all.
- Wrong comparison: A backlog query is directional. Reverse the source and destination when you need to know whether the other partner is also waiting.
- Report mismatch: Health-report sharing-violation entries can lag behind the actual file state. Confirm with a fresh backlog query and the event log.
Record the count and oldest update at two or more times. The trend, combined with event timing and change rate, is more useful than a single number.
Why are SYSVOL and NETLOGON missing?
Missing SYSVOL or NETLOGON usually indicates a DFSR state, content-freshness, or domain-controller initialization problem. It is a high-impact condition because Group Policy and logon scripts depend on these shares.
Check events before changing state
Review DFSR events including 4012, 4114, 4602, 4604, 4614, 2213, and 2214. Event 4012 points to content-freshness protection after the documented offline limit. Events 4602 and 4604 are associated with SYSVOL recovery milestones, while 4114 and 4614 can identify membership and initialization transitions. Events 2213 and 2214 indicate service or database recovery conditions that need to be understood before proceeding.
Use non-authoritative recovery for a single damaged member
When another domain controller has the correct SYSVOL content and only one member needs repair, the non-authoritative procedure makes the affected member obtain a fresh replicated copy. Follow the Microsoft sequence exactly, including the required AD changes, replication convergence, DFSR service checks, and verification. Do not improvise by deleting folders or forcing a share.

Reserve authoritative recovery for a domain-wide source decision
Authoritative recovery designates one copy as the source for the domain. It is appropriate only when the documented scenario calls for that decision, such as a coordinated domain-wide SYSVOL recovery. A single-member outage is not, by itself, a reason to make one server authoritative.
Which dfsrdiag errors are common, and what should I do?
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| “Command not found” or the wrong executable runs | The file is absent, the host lacks the relevant server tooling, or the PATH points somewhere unexpected. | Confirm the host role, locate and validate the Microsoft binary, run it by its verified path, and do not copy an executable from another machine as a shortcut. |
| PollAD returns but configuration does not change | AD replication has not converged, the member polls a different domain controller than expected, or membership remains disabled or unhealthy. | Check AD and DFSR events, verify the target member, allow convergence, and inspect membership state. |
| Backlog is very large | Pending work may reflect normal latency, a high change rate, network conditions, partner connectivity, staging, or a service fault. | Track age and trend, compare both directions, and correlate with events and health-report output. |
| SYSVOL or NETLOGON is not shared | The member may be in an initialization, content-freshness, or recovery state. | Review the specified DFSR events and use the documented non-authoritative or authoritative procedure that matches the scope. |
| Health report lists sharing violations after replication | Report entries can remain after files have replicated. | Run a fresh backlog query and use the event log to establish the current pending state. |
| Migration state looks stale | Active Directory replication latency can leave migration output behind current reality. | Poll AD on the affected member, allow convergence, and recheck the migration state. |
What should I never do when repairing DFSR?
Do not manually share SYSVOL or set SYSVOLREADY=1 as a shortcut. Microsoft warns that this can make a domain controller contact itself for Group Policy and create a worse failure mode. Do not perform authoritative SYSVOL recovery as a generic fix for one-member trouble. Do not delete the DFSR database, copy system binaries from another server, or edit membership attributes without a documented procedure and a verified recovery plan.
Before any high-impact recovery, make sure you know which domain controller has the valid SYSVOL content, how AD replication is behaving, and how you will verify Group Policy and logon behavior afterward. Preserve event logs, command output, and the generated HTML/XML report so another administrator can audit the decision.
Why might dfsrdiag.exe be running on my Windows Server?
An administrator, scheduled troubleshooting workflow, migration procedure, or recovery script may invoke it to poll configuration, inspect a backlog, dump settings, or generate a health report. The process name alone does not identify who started it or whether the file is genuine. Check the executable’s verified path and signature, the parent process and scheduled tasks, the command-line arguments, and the server’s DFSR event timeline. A legitimate command with a clear administrative purpose is different from an unsigned copy launched from a temporary or download directory.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use dfsrdiag.exe on a normal Windows 11 laptop?
The utility is intended primarily for Windows Server domain environments and may not be present on a consumer Windows installation. A missing command on a laptop does not indicate a DFSR failure; diagnose the server that hosts the replication membership instead.
Does running BACKLOG copy or delete files?
No. A backlog query reports pending updates for the source and destination you specify. It does not initiate a synchronization, remove files, or resolve a blocked partner.

What information should I collect before opening a support case?
Collect the exact command and arguments, server and member names, replication group and folder, timestamps, DFSR event IDs, backlog counts in both directions, and the HTML/XML health-report files if you generated them. Include whether SYSVOL and NETLOGON are missing and which domain controller holds the known-good content.

Why can a server show a healthy DFSR service while Group Policy still fails?
Service status alone does not prove that SYSVOL content is current or that Active Directory has converged. Check the member’s DFSR state, content-freshness events, SYSVOL and NETLOGON availability, and the AD replication path used by that domain controller.
Is a signed dfsrdiag.exe automatically safe to use for SYSVOL recovery?
A valid Microsoft signature supports the file’s authenticity, not the correctness of a recovery decision. SYSVOL procedures can change domain-wide behavior, so use the documented path that matches the failure and verify the source of truth before making state-changing changes.
