DiagnosticsHub.StandardCollector.Service.exe is the executable for Microsoft’s Diagnostics Hub Standard Collector Service. A normal Windows copy is usually at C:WindowsSystem32DiagSvcsDiagnosticsHub.StandardCollector.Service.exe; some Visual Studio installations use a DiagnosticsHub.Collection.Service folder instead. The file is generally legitimate when the service name, location, Microsoft signature and installation context all match. A copy with the same name in Downloads, a temporary folder or another user-writable directory is not automatically safe and should be scanned.

The service collects real-time Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) events and processes them when it is running. Its normal configuration is Manual and Stopped, so seeing it stopped is not, by itself, an error. This guide shows how to verify the file, interpret common failures, repair Windows components, and decide whether to leave, disable or remove the related component.

What does diagnosticshub.standardcollector.service.exe do?

The executable belongs to the Diagnostics Hub Standard Collector Service, a Microsoft component used by Windows and Visual Studio diagnostic features. The service description is: “Diagnostics Hub Standard Collector Service. When running, this service collects real time ETW events and processes them.” ETW is Windows’ low-overhead event system; diagnostic tools can consume those events to investigate application, performance and system behavior.

The service is not a general-purpose program that must run continuously. The reference configuration is Manual startup, Stopped when no diagnostic session requires it, and no listed service dependencies. Visual Studio can install a related directory named DiagnosticsHub.Collection.Service, so the exact folder depends on which Windows or Visual Studio component supplied the executable.

Is diagnosticshub.standardcollector.service.exe safe?

It is normally safe when it is the Microsoft executable installed in an expected directory and its digital signature is valid. The filename alone is not proof: malware can copy a legitimate filename, while an old or damaged Microsoft file can still fail to run.

Expected locations and identity

Check What a legitimate installation usually shows Why it matters
Service name diagnosticshub.standardcollector.service This identifies the registered Windows service rather than merely a similarly named process.
Windows path C:WindowsSystem32DiagSvcsDiagnosticsHub.StandardCollector.Service.exe System32 and the DiagSvcs subdirectory are the normal Windows location.
Visual Studio path A DiagnosticsHub.Collection.Service directory under the Visual Studio installation Visual Studio may provide its own diagnostics component.
Publisher and signature Microsoft signer shown as valid in the file’s properties A valid signature ties the binary to its publisher and detects tampering.
Startup state Manual and often Stopped The service starts when diagnostics need it; it is not expected to run constantly.

When the location is suspicious

A same-named file in %TEMP%, Downloads, a browser cache, a user’s profile or another writable folder may be an impersonation. Do not replace the system copy with an EXE downloaded from a file-sharing site. Preserve the file long enough to record its path and scan it with Microsoft Defender or another trusted security product; quarantine it if the scanner identifies a threat.

What the historical vulnerability means

Diagnostics Hub has a documented security history, which is why patching matters. Microsoft Update Catalog records an elevation-of-privilege issue caused by unsafe library loading in the Diagnostics Hub Standard Collector Service and lists Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 security updates, including later superseding updates. Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative published CVE-2016-3231 on June 22, 2016, describing local code execution on vulnerable installations and assigning CVSS 6.9. Those records describe flaws in vulnerable versions; they do not mean that every current, correctly signed copy is malware. Install current Windows and Visual Studio security updates rather than deleting the service because an old advisory exists.

How can I verify the service and file before repairing anything?

Verification prevents you from “repairing” the wrong file or deleting a component that is functioning normally. Complete these checks while the error is visible so you can match the event time with the relevant log entry.

  1. Open the Services console. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Locate Diagnostics Hub Standard Collector Service. Confirm that the service name in its properties is diagnosticshub.standardcollector.service.
  2. Read the executable path. In the service’s Properties window, check Path to executable. Compare it with the Windows DiagSvcs path or the Visual Studio diagnostics path listed above. A path that begins in a user-writable directory needs additional scrutiny.
  3. Check the signature. Browse to the file, open Properties and select Digital Signatures. View the signature details and confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature. A missing or invalid signature is a reason to stop and scan, not to overwrite the file manually.
  4. Scan an unexpected copy. Open Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, then Scan options and a custom scan of the file or containing folder. Keep your security definitions current.
  5. Correlate the timestamp. In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System. Look for entries at the same time as the failure, recording the event source, error code, faulting module and account. Also check the relevant Visual Studio or application diagnostic log if the problem occurs only during a development workload.

Why is diagnosticshub.standardcollector.service.exe missing or failing to start?

The message determines the safest branch. A missing-file message usually indicates a damaged or incomplete Windows or Visual Studio component. A startup failure can result from corrupted protected files, an outdated component, a failed update or a damaged component store. A service that is simply stopped is normal when its startup type remains Manual.

“The file is missing” or “cannot be located”

First confirm the path recorded in Services and check whether the parent component is installed. Do not download a loose replacement EXE. Use the Windows image and protected-file repair sequence below; it can restore the correct version for your installed build.

“Application error” or failure after an update

Record the exact event and faulting module, install pending Windows and Visual Studio updates, restart, and then run DISM followed by SFC. If the issue began immediately after a particular update, document that fact before considering rollback; ordinary troubleshooting should prefer a current, patched installation.

A copy runs from a temporary or user-writable folder

Treat the copy as a possible impersonation. Disconnecting a compromised computer from sensitive networks may be prudent while you scan, but do not delete the signed system copy merely because another file has the same name. Let your security product quarantine the suspicious copy and review its detection details.

How do I repair the component with DISM and SFC?

Microsoft’s supported sequence repairs the Windows component store first and then verifies protected system files. You need an administrator account and enough free space for servicing operations. Save work before restarting.

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Repair the Windows image. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM checks the online Windows image and can obtain missing or corrupted repair files through Microsoft Update. The command may pause at a percentage for an extended time; do not close the window while it is servicing the image.

  1. Verify and replace protected files. After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow

System File Checker scans protected files and replaces incorrect versions with correct ones. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then note whether it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files.

  1. Restart Windows. Reopen the application or diagnostic workflow that produced the error and test it again.
  2. Review the servicing log if repair fails. DISM records findings in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Search the log around the repair time for the affected component and the error code shown by DISM or SFC.

Useful SFC checks for a targeted diagnosis

To check without making changes, use the verify-only mode:

sfc /verifyonly

If you need to examine one protected file and know its full path, use:

sfc /scanfile=<full path>

Replace <full path> with the actual path, such as C:WindowsSystem32DiagSvcsDiagnosticsHub.StandardCollector.Service.exe. These modes do not substitute for the full DISM-then-SFC repair when the component store itself is damaged.

What if DISM says the repair source is missing?

That message means DISM cannot obtain the files it needs from the configured source, often because Windows Update is unavailable or the local component store is too damaged. Use installation media or another computer running the same Windows version as a repair source; matching the operating-system version is important because files from a different release may not be interchangeable.

For an accessible matching source, the syntax can look like this:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess

Change the UNC path to the actual Windows folder on your repair source. The /LimitAccess switch tells DISM not to contact Windows Update. If the source is installation media, identify the correct Windows edition and image before running the command. When the component store still cannot be repaired, back up important data and move to Windows Recovery options or a repair installation instead of deleting individual system files.

Should I disable or delete the Diagnostics Hub service?

Usually, leave it installed with its normal Manual startup type. A stopped service is expected when no diagnostic session is active, and deleting the executable can break Windows or Visual Studio diagnostics without fixing the underlying corruption.

Temporarily stopping or disabling it

If you are isolating a conflict, open services.msc, open the service’s Properties, choose Stop if it is running, and record the original startup type. You can temporarily set Startup type to Disabled, apply the change, restart and test. Restore Manual afterward so diagnostics can start when requested. Disabling may prevent Visual Studio diagnostic collection, so it is a troubleshooting test rather than a routine performance measure.

Removing a Visual Studio component

If you no longer use Visual Studio diagnostics, repair or remove the parent Visual Studio component through its supported installer. This is safer than deleting a service entry or removing files from System32. Keep the component when you still use diagnostic sessions or when other Visual Studio features depend on it.

Why deleting the EXE is a bad fix

Manual deletion leaves the service registration and any dependent installation in an inconsistent state. It also removes the opportunity for DISM, SFC or the Visual Studio installer to restore the correct signed version. If a suspicious duplicate exists, scan and quarantine that duplicate instead of touching the expected system file.

Which repair option should I choose?

Situation Best first option Trade-off
You suspect ordinary Windows file corruption Online DISM, then sfc /scannow Requires administrator access and may need Windows Update.
DISM cannot download source files DISM with a matching offline Windows source, then SFC Requires installation media or another computer with the same Windows version.
You only want to inspect integrity sfc /verifyonly or a targeted /scanfile Verification does not repair the image or replace damaged files.
You no longer need Visual Studio diagnostics Repair or remove the parent component with its supported installer Removing it can eliminate diagnostic functionality and may affect related workloads.
A duplicate is in a temporary or user-writable folder Scan with Microsoft Defender or another trusted security product Security investigation is required; do not overwrite the expected system copy.
You are considering direct EXE deletion Do not delete it; repair the component instead Deletion is destructive and does not address component-store corruption.

What should I do when repairs still fail?

  • Capture the exact error text, event ID, faulting module and timestamp before repeating commands.
  • Confirm that Windows and Visual Studio updates completed successfully and that the computer was restarted.
  • Recheck the file path and signature after repair; a repaired system copy should still be in an expected directory.
  • Use the CBS log and Event Viewer records when contacting Microsoft or your organization’s support team.
  • Back up documents and other important data before Windows Recovery or a repair installation. These options can change system components and should not be attempted without a recovery plan.

As an optional shortcut after trying the Windows steps above, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. FAQ

Can a stopped Diagnostics Hub service explain a slow computer?

Not by itself. Manual startup and a Stopped status are the reference configuration, so the service is normally inactive until a diagnostic session requests it. Investigate sustained CPU, memory or disk usage in Task Manager and correlate it with the service’s start time rather than assuming the stopped entry is the cause.

Does CVE-2016-3231 mean my copy is infected?

No. The CVE documents a vulnerability in older software, not evidence that a particular computer has been compromised. Determine risk from the installed version, current security updates, file signature, path and security-scan results.

Can I copy the executable from another Windows computer?

Do not copy a loose EXE as a general repair method. Windows builds and Visual Studio installations differ; use DISM with a matching repair source or the supported component installer so related files and servicing metadata remain consistent.

Will disabling the service remove Windows diagnostics permanently?

Disabling changes the service’s ability to start; it does not uninstall the component. Restoring Startup type to Manual and starting a supported diagnostic workflow returns the normal configuration, provided the underlying files are intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I find evidence of what failed?

Event Viewer usually provides the event source, ID and timestamp, while the application or Visual Studio log may identify the diagnostic session. For servicing failures, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log after DISM or SFC finishes.
