DLLRunner64.exe is a 64-bit executable documented by Kaseya as part of its Windows endpoint agent. It is not a Windows system file. A copy in the installed Kaseya agent directory with a valid Kaseya digital signature is usually a legitimate component, but the filename alone cannot prove that it is safe.
If you find it in a temporary, download, or user-writable folder, see an invalid or missing publisher signature, or receive an antivirus detection, treat it as untrusted until you verify the path, signature, parent process, Kaseya installation, and security-alert details. Do not download a replacement DLL or create an antivirus exclusion before those checks.

DLLRunner64.exe is the 64-bit version of a program shipped with Kaseya’s endpoint agent. Kaseya’s support documentation lists both DLLRunner32.exe and DLLRunner64.exe among the agent files and trusted applications. The agent can use these executables while managing endpoint tasks and interacting with security software.
Microsoft’s documented Windows components do not include DLLRunner64.exe. Its presence therefore points to a separately installed Kaseya agent rather than to Windows 10 or Windows 11 itself. A managed-service provider, company IT department, or another administrator may have installed that agent without it being obvious to the everyday user.

The name also does not mean that the file is a DLL. It is an executable (.exe) whose name refers to its role in handling DLL-related operations. A similarly named file copied by malware can look convincing, so identification depends on context rather than spelling.
Is DLLRunner64.exe safe or a virus?
A DLLRunner64.exe file is likely legitimate when all of the following are true: it is inside the Kaseya agent’s installation directory, Windows reports Kaseya as the signer, an authorized Kaseya agent is installed, and the process was started by the expected agent service. None of those checks by itself proves safety, and an unexpected copy should be investigated before it is allowed to run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you find | How to interpret it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| File in the Kaseya agent directory; valid Kaseya signature | Consistent with an installed agent component | Confirm the agent version and review any antivirus event; ask the Kaseya administrator before changing policy |
| File in a temporary, Downloads, desktop, or user-profile folder | Unusual location that can be used to hide an unwanted executable | Do not run it or add an exclusion; scan the file and investigate its parent process |
| No publisher, invalid signature, or signature that is not Kaseya | Identity is not verified | Quarantine or isolate according to your security procedure and perform a full scan |
| Unexpected command line or parent process | Could indicate misuse, tampering, or a different program with the same name | Record the command line and parent, then involve IT or security staff |
| Antivirus blocks a verified Kaseya copy | Could be a false positive or an agent-permission conflict | Keep the block in place until the path and signature are confirmed; have the administrator review a narrowly scoped policy change |
Microsoft warns that launching unknown executable files can be risky because their intent is not initially clear. It also points to unexplained process locations and behavior as useful investigation clues, while noting that one clue alone does not establish that a file is malware.
Where should DLLRunner64.exe be located?
Kaseya documents DLLRunner64.exe in the Kaseya agent installation directory. The exact directory can differ by product version and deployment policy, so there is no single drive letter or folder name that applies to every computer. A copy in a writable temporary directory is materially more suspicious than one protected with the rest of the agent files.

Check the running process in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Select Details; on some Windows builds you may need to choose More details first.
- Find
DLLRunner64.exe. If it is not running, continue with the installed-file checks below. - Right-click the process and choose Open file location. Record the complete path before closing the window.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Kaseya as the signer.
If the Digital Signatures tab is absent, the signature is invalid, or the path is outside the installed Kaseya directory, do not treat the filename as trustworthy.
Inspect the parent process and command line
Parent-process information can show whether the executable was launched by the Kaseya agent or by an unrelated program. In an elevated PowerShell window, the following command lists the process, its parent ID, executable path, and command line, then resolves the parent process:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

$p = Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "Name = 'DLLRunner64.exe'"); $p | Select-Object ProcessId, ParentProcessId, ExecutablePath, CommandLine; $p | ForEach-Object { Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "ProcessId = $($_.ParentProcessId)" | Select-Object Name, ProcessId, ExecutablePath }
If the command returns no process, DLLRunner64.exe is not currently running. If it returns a parent from a temporary folder, a script host, or an unrelated application, save the output and have a security professional review it.
Why is my antivirus blocking DLLRunner64.exe?
Kaseya’s support guidance describes antivirus-related permission errors on endpoints and lists DLLRunner64.exe as a trusted application that may need to be allowed within the agent’s working directories. A legitimate agent can therefore be blocked because a security policy changed, the agent was updated, or a detection rule produced a false positive.

That explanation does not make every blocked copy safe. Before an administrator creates an exclusion, compare the exact path in the alert with the installed agent directory, verify the digital signature, check the parent process, and note the detection name and event time. An exclusion should be limited to the verified Kaseya path or file and should be applied only through the organization’s normal security-policy process.
What to record from the antivirus alert
- Detection name and severity.
- Full file path and SHA-256 hash, if the product displays one.
- Action taken: blocked, quarantined, terminated, or allowed.
- Timestamp, logged-in account, and the process that triggered the alert.
- Kaseya agent version and whether the agent was recently installed or upgraded.
Do not disable real-time protection merely to test whether the program starts. Keep the alert available for the Kaseya administrator or managed-service provider.

How do I fix a DLLRunner64.exe error when the file belongs to Kaseya?
Use the sequence below when the path and signature match a Kaseya installation. It separates an agent problem from Windows component corruption and avoids replacing a managed file with an untrusted download.
- Capture the exact symptom. Take a screenshot or copy the complete message, such as an access-denied notice, missing-file message, or “Bad Image” dialog. Record when it appears and which application or service is running at the time.
- Verify the file identity. Recheck the location, Kaseya signature, file version, parent process, and command line. If any of these do not match the authorized deployment, stop and follow the suspicious-file procedure instead of repairing the agent.
- Check the Kaseya agent installation. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and look for the Kaseya agent entry. Enterprise deployments may hide this entry or manage it through a separate console; in that case contact the administrator rather than uninstalling files manually.
- Review the security event. Ask the administrator to compare the antivirus event with the Kaseya agent path and current policy. If the file is verified, the administrator can repair or update the agent through the normal Kaseya deployment process and, where justified, add a narrowly scoped exclusion.
- Restart after the managed repair. A reboot can clear a locked executable or restart the agent service after an update. If the error returns immediately, preserve the new event details instead of repeatedly deleting or restoring the file.
- Repair Windows components only when evidence points to Windows corruption. Open Start, type
cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store and System File Checker verifies protected Windows files. These commands do not authenticate, reinstall, or repair a third-party Kaseya executable. If either command reports errors it cannot repair, save the output for IT support.

- Check the Application event log. Open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and inspect events at the time of the failure. The faulting module, application name, and exception code can distinguish a Kaseya-agent failure from a different program that merely reports DLLRunner64.exe in its crash chain.
- Do not use a DLL-download site. A downloaded file may be modified, mismatched to the agent version, or signed by nobody. Managed-agent files should come from the organization’s Kaseya deployment channel.
What should I do if DLLRunner64.exe looks suspicious?
Use the suspicious-file path when the executable is in an unexpected directory, lacks a valid Kaseya signature, has an unrelated parent process, or is associated with a security detection that cannot be explained by the installed agent.
- Disconnect carefully. If compromise is plausible, remove the computer from sensitive networks or place it in the organization’s quarantine network. Avoid actions that destroy evidence if an incident-response team is involved.
- Update protection. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, open Protection updates and select Check for updates.
- Run a full scan. Choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start it. Keep the computer powered on until the scan completes.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software persists. The Offline scan restarts Windows into a separate scanning environment, which can detect threats that hide while the normal desktop is running. Save open work first and follow the restart prompt.
- Preserve the alert and file details. Do not restore a quarantined file simply because an application stops working. Give IT the path, signature result, hash, detection name, and parent-process information.
- Respond to a confirmed compromise. Change important passwords from a known-clean device, review persistence mechanisms and account activity, and restore normal network access only after the responsible security team says it is safe.
Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool covers only a limited set of prevalent malware and is not a substitute for an up-to-date antivirus product. A clean scan also does not prove that a suspicious file is a genuine Kaseya component; identity and deployment context still matter.
Can I delete DLLRunner64.exe?
Do not delete it manually when it is part of an active Kaseya installation. Removing one executable can leave the agent partially installed, generate repeated permission errors, or interfere with remote management. If the agent is no longer authorized, have the Kaseya administrator uninstall it through the approved management console or Windows uninstall process.
If security software identifies an untrusted copy, allow the security product to quarantine or remove that copy rather than dragging it to the Recycle Bin. Before deleting anything, confirm that the path is not the legitimate agent directory and retain the alert information for investigation.

How does DLL hijacking relate to DLLRunner64.exe?
Windows searches a defined sequence of directories when an application requests a DLL without a fully qualified path. Microsoft explains that an attacker who can write to one of those directories may plant a malicious DLL that the application loads first. This is a general DLL-search-order risk, not evidence that DLLRunner64.exe itself is malicious.
The practical implication is that a DLLRunner64.exe copy in a writable temporary or user directory deserves extra scrutiny, especially if nearby DLLs appeared at the same time. Verify the executable’s signature and path, inspect the directory’s permissions, and scan the whole location. Do not “fix” a suspected hijack by copying random DLLs into the folder.
Which troubleshooting path fits my situation?
| Situation | Primary path | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified Kaseya path and signature; agent is authorized | Review the antivirus event, then have the administrator repair or update the agent | Delete the executable or download a replacement |
| Verified Kaseya path, but antivirus blocks it | Keep protection enabled while the administrator validates a narrowly scoped policy change | Disable antivirus globally |
| Unexpected path or invalid signature | Isolate if appropriate, update Defender, run a full scan and, if needed, Offline scan | Create an exclusion because the filename looks familiar |
| Windows DISM or SFC reports component corruption | Complete the DISM-then-SFC sequence and review the resulting logs | Assume Windows repair commands validate the Kaseya file |
| No Kaseya agent is authorized on the computer | Ask IT whether the agent was deployed; investigate the executable as unexpected until confirmed | Allow it solely because it contains “DLL” or “64” in the name |
What information should I give IT or a managed-service provider?
Provide the complete error text, full path, file version, digital-signature result, Kaseya agent version, antivirus product and detection name, event timestamp, parent process, command line, and whether DISM or SFC reported corruption. Mention recent software installations, agent upgrades, or policy changes. This lets the administrator choose between an agent repair, a security investigation, and a Windows-component repair without guessing.
As an optional shortcut after you have checked the path and security alerts, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, reduce certain system-load causes, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DLLRunner64.exe part of Windows 11?
No. The documented source is Kaseya’s endpoint agent, not a built-in Windows 11 component. If no authorized Kaseya software is installed, treat the file as unexplained until an administrator confirms its origin.
Can I replace DLLRunner64.exe with DLLRunner32.exe?
No. The two names identify different executable builds, and substituting one for the other can break the agent or create an architecture mismatch. Use the organization’s Kaseya deployment process to restore the correct file.
Should I allow DLLRunner64.exe through the Windows firewall?
Do not create a broad firewall rule based only on the filename. First verify the path, signature, parent process, and Kaseya deployment; then let the administrator determine whether a specific network permission is required.
Why does the same filename appear more than once on my computer?
Kaseya documentation references both 32-bit and 64-bit agent executables, and backups or older agent folders can also leave copies behind. Compare each copy’s path and signature rather than assuming that every instance is the same program.
