driverpreinstall64.exe is generally a legacy 64-bit driver-preinstallation helper installed with TomTom navigation software such as MyTomTom or MyDrive Connect. It is not a standard Windows component. A copy in a TomTom program folder with a valid TomTom digital signature is consistent with a legitimate file; the same name in a temporary, user-writable, or unexplained folder deserves investigation. Historical TomTom reports most often connect its crashes to a missing or damaged DIFXAPI.dll. The safest repair is to identify the file and parent product, remove the damaged TomTom installation, then reinstall the complete package from an official TomTom source rather than downloading a single executable or DLL.
What is driverpreinstall64.exe?
DriverPreInstall64.exe is a 64-bit helper used by older TomTom navigation applications to prepare or install device drivers. Package inventories for MyTomTom 3.0.2.344 list it beside DriverPreInstall.exe, uninstallers, and the main TomTom executable. MyDrive Connect 4.2.6.3888 places it in a Driverx64 folder with a matching DIFxAPI.dll, driver INF and catalog files, and uninstall components.

Those inventories, and similar inventories for later MyDrive Connect releases, show a consistent TomTom naming pattern. They do not make every copy on every computer legitimate. The filename itself is only an identifier; the full path, parent application, signature, and installation source provide the useful evidence.
It is therefore best understood as part of a TomTom driver package, not as a standalone Windows utility. If you no longer use TomTom software, the file may be an orphaned remnant, but deleting it before checking the parent installation can leave the navigation software unable to install or update its drivers.

Is driverpreinstall64.exe safe?
A copy installed with MyTomTom or MyDrive Connect, located in that product’s program directory and signed by TomTom, is consistent with legitimate software. A copy in a temporary directory, a user’s Downloads or AppData folder, an email attachment, a cracked application, or a random “DLL fix” package should be treated as suspicious until you establish where it came from. A crash message alone does not prove that the file is malware.
| Check | Reassuring result | Warning sign and response |
|---|---|---|
| File location | Inside the installed MyTomTom or MyDrive Connect directory, including its driver subfolder. | Temporary, user-writable, or unrelated application folder. Do not run it again; isolate the file and investigate its origin. |
| Digital signature | Windows Properties shows a valid TomTom signature and a certificate chain that Windows can validate. | No signature, an invalid signature, or a signer unrelated to TomTom. Treat the copy as untrusted until replaced from an official installer. |
| Parent product | You intentionally installed TomTom software and the file’s version fits that installation. | You have never installed TomTom software, or the file appeared after an unknown download. Scan the system and review recent installers. |
| Related files | The same folder contains the expected driver INF, catalog, uninstall files, and matching DIFxAPI.dll. |
Only a lone executable is present, or companion files have unrelated names and dates. Do not fetch replacement files from a DLL site. |
Microsoft describes driver signing as a way to verify package integrity and vendor identity. Windows kernel Code Integrity also restricts which kernel-mode drivers can load. These controls help assess a driver package, but they do not turn an unsigned or oddly located executable into a safe one, nor do they provide a current hash-based verdict for every historical TomTom build.

How can I verify the file before fixing it?
Record the evidence first. It prevents you from deleting a legitimate installation component and gives you something concrete to compare after reinstalling.
- Open the file’s location. In Task Manager, right-click the process if it is running and choose Open file location. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Properties. Copy the complete path, file version, and creation or modification date.
- Identify the parent application. Look for MyTomTom, MyDrive Connect, or another TomTom product in the same directory. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11 and 10) or Control Panel > Programs and Features (older Windows) for the installed product and its version.
- Check the signature. In Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. Use View Certificate to inspect the certificate chain and expiration information. A valid signature supports the file’s provenance; it is not a guarantee that an old program is compatible with your current Windows build.
- Inspect the crash record. Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > Application, and find the event at the time of the failure. An APPCRASH naming
DriverPreInstall64.exeandDIFXAPI.dllis consistent with the historical TomTom failure described below. - Check how it arrived. If the file came from a TomTom installer you obtained intentionally, keep that installer information. If it arrived in an attachment, a crack, a temporary extraction folder, or a third-party “driver” bundle, do not trust its provenance even if the filename looks familiar.
You can also use PowerShell to record the signer without launching the file:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:pathtoDriverPreInstall64.exe"
Replace the path with the one you recorded. A status other than Valid calls for caution, especially when the signer is absent or unexpected. Do not use an online hash result as your only decision: the available historical records do not establish a universal safe hash for every version of this executable.

Why does DriverPreInstall64.exe stop working?
The best-documented historical failure involves DIFXAPI.dll, the Driver Install Frameworks API library used by the helper. In a Microsoft-hosted 2011 record quoting TomTom Support, the explanation was: “The DIFXAPI.dll is a Driver Install Frameworks API (DIFxAPI). The errors you are receiving would indicate that the dll file is probably missing or corrupted.” A contemporaneous technical account likewise reported that the x64 helper stopped when that DLL was missing.
Incomplete or damaged TomTom installation
An interrupted update, failed uninstall, disk error, or security product quarantine can leave the executable present while removing or corrupting its matching DLL, INF, or catalog. The helper then launches but cannot complete driver installation.
Old software on a newer Windows build
The cited failures concern Vista- and XP-era TomTom software. They do not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 failure has the same cause, and the available records do not confirm that these legacy executables remain supported today. A compatibility problem is plausible when an old installer is used on a current build, but establish the exact event and package version before assigning blame.
Driver-signing policy blocks the package
Windows may refuse a driver that lacks an acceptable signature or does not meet current Code Integrity requirements. In that case, the helper can appear to fail even though its own executable is intact. The correct remedy is a signed package from Windows Update, TomTom, or the hardware manufacturer, not a forced installation of an unknown driver.
Wrong architecture or mismatched companion files
The “64” suffix identifies the x64 helper. Mixing it with a 32-bit executable, an unrelated DIFXAPI.dll, or files from a different TomTom release can produce launch or installation errors. Replacing one file by hand rarely repairs the version mismatch.

Untrusted or altered copy
If the path and signature do not match a TomTom installation, malware or a bundled modification remains possible. Microsoft defines malware simply as malicious software; the absence of a crash is not evidence that an unexplained copy is benign.
How do I fix a DriverPreInstall64.exe or DIFXAPI.dll error?
Follow the sequence below. It keeps the complete driver package together and separates a damaged TomTom installation from a genuinely blocked driver.
1. Close TomTom software and preserve the details
Exit MyTomTom or MyDrive Connect and disconnect the navigation unit. Write down the file path, TomTom product version, Windows edition and build, and the exact error text. If the file is in an unexpected location or has no valid signature, do not open it while troubleshooting.
2. Repair or uninstall the parent TomTom product
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features) to select MyTomTom or MyDrive Connect. If the entry offers Repair, try it first. Otherwise uninstall the product, restart Windows, and sign in with an administrator account if Windows requests permission.

3. Reinstall the complete package from TomTom
Download the installer from an official TomTom source for your model and Windows version. A complete installation should restore DriverPreInstall64.exe together with the matching DIFxAPI.dll, driver INF, catalog, and uninstall files. Do not download a lone executable or DLL from an untrusted DLL website; a file with the right name can still be the wrong version or tampered with.
Run the installer as an administrator when required, allow it to finish, and restart Windows if prompted. Then repeat the signature and path checks so you know the repaired copy belongs to the newly installed product.
4. Respond to a driver-blocking message
If Windows explicitly says that a driver was blocked, do not disable security features just to force the old package through. First check Settings > Windows Update for current updates. If no compatible package is offered, obtain a signed driver from the exact TomTom model’s support page or from the relevant hardware manufacturer’s official support channel, as Microsoft recommends.
Record the block message or error code. A signing-policy failure is different from a missing-DLL failure, and reinstalling the same obsolete package may repeat the problem.
5. Reconnect the navigation unit correctly
Once the driver installation completes, reconnect the TomTom device by USB. Historical TomTom troubleshooting instructions perform the connection after the driver is installed. Use a cable that is compatible with the exact navigation model, connect directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub, and allow Windows a moment to enumerate the device before opening the TomTom application.

6. Scan when the file’s provenance is unclear
Update Microsoft Defender, run a full scan, and, if the file is unexpected or returns after removal, run Microsoft Defender Offline. Quarantine or remove anything the scan identifies. A scan is especially important when the file was found outside a TomTom directory, arrived with a crack or attachment, or lacks a valid signature.
7. Recheck the result
Open the TomTom application, allow it to detect the device, and attempt the original operation that failed. If the same APPCRASH returns, capture the new Event Viewer entry, including the faulting module and exception code. That information distinguishes a remaining dependency problem from a Windows compatibility or signing issue and is more useful to TomTom support than repeatedly deleting the executable.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I avoid when repairing this file?
- Do not download a replacement DLL by filename alone. A random
DIFXAPI.dllcan be mismatched, modified, or bundled with unwanted software. - Do not delete the executable as a first step. Removing it can break a legitimate TomTom installation and does not repair a missing companion library.
- Do not infer malware from the crash message. The documented historical failure was a missing or corrupted library, not a malware diagnosis.
- Do not disable driver-signing protections casually. A blocked driver should be replaced with a signed, compatible package.
- Do not mix releases. Keep the helper, DLL, INF, catalog, and installer from the same TomTom package.
- Do not assume an old support record describes current Windows. The best-known reports date from 2011–2012 and involve older operating systems; verify behavior on your exact Windows build.
How do the common symptoms map to the likely cause?
| Symptom | Most useful first check | Likely next action |
|---|---|---|
“DriverPreInstall64.exe has stopped working” and the event names DIFXAPI.dll |
Confirm whether the matching DLL exists in the same TomTom driver folder and whether the installation is complete. | Repair or uninstall the TomTom product, restart, and reinstall the complete official package. |
| “The procedure entry point” or a side-by-side/launch error | Compare the helper, DLL, and TomTom product versions; look for files copied from different releases. | Remove the mixed installation and reinstall one consistent package. |
| Windows says the driver is blocked | Read the Windows security or Code Integrity message and identify the driver package. | Use Windows Update or a signed package from TomTom or the hardware manufacturer. |
| The file appears outside any TomTom folder | Check its origin, signature, parent process, and recent downloads. | Do not launch it; update Defender, run a full scan and, when necessary, Defender Offline. |
| The device is not detected after reinstalling | Check the USB cable, direct connection, Device Manager status, and whether the TomTom application is running. | Reconnect with a model-compatible cable and obtain the model-specific signed driver if Windows still reports a problem. |
What is the practical verdict?
DriverPreInstall64.exe is principally associated with TomTom navigation software and is not a normal Windows core executable. Its safety depends on context: a valid TomTom signature in a TomTom installation directory is reassuring, while an unexplained copy is not. The historically documented “stopped working” case points to a missing or corrupted DIFXAPI.dll, but those records are from legacy TomTom software and do not establish a universal modern Windows diagnosis. Verify the file, reinstall the complete matching package, use signed drivers when Windows blocks one, and scan any copy whose provenance you cannot explain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete driverpreinstall64.exe if I no longer use a TomTom device?
First uninstall the associated TomTom application and restart Windows. If the vendor’s uninstall process leaves an identified TomTom folder behind, remove only that leftover folder; deleting the executable alone can leave broken entries and does not clean a shared driver installation.
Why is a 64-bit TomTom helper still present after an upgrade?
Older MyTomTom and MyDrive Connect packages can leave driver components behind when an upgrade or uninstall is interrupted. Its presence is not proof that the file is active; the path, installed-product list, and signature show whether it belongs to a remaining TomTom installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will replacing DIFXAPI.dll from another computer fix the crash?
Usually not safely. The DLL must match the helper and the rest of the driver package, so copying one from another machine can create a version mismatch; reinstall the complete TomTom package instead.
Can Windows 11 run this legacy executable?
There is no current support confirmation in the historical records for every Windows 11 build. If the installer fails, check for a model-specific current TomTom package or signed driver, and treat compatibility as unresolved rather than forcing an old package through Windows security controls.
