emon.exe is Intel EMON, a command-line performance-profiling utility normally installed with Intel VTune Profiler. Intel documents a typical Windows location as C:Program Files (x86)InteloneAPIvtune2024.0bin64emon.exe. That filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine or malicious: similarly named files, including emmon.exe and EMon.exe, belong to unrelated products. Check the complete path, publisher signature, owning application and security-scan results before deleting anything. If the file is an Intel copy that will not start, update or reinstall the VTune or oneAPI package that installed it. If it appears during a crash or blue-screen event, troubleshoot Windows, drivers and hardware rather than assuming the user-mode executable is the root cause.
What does emon.exe do?
Intel calls EMON (Event Monitoring) a low-level tool for profiling application and system performance. It reads hardware Performance Monitoring Unit (PMU) counters and collects performance-monitoring events that developers can use to investigate CPU behavior, memory activity and other performance characteristics. EMON is intended for developers and advanced performance analysis, not as a normal Windows component that every PC needs at startup. A gamer might encounter it after installing VTune to profile a game or another demanding application, but most systems do not need EMON running continuously for ordinary play, browsing or office work.
Is emon.exe safe?
An emon.exe located inside an Intel oneAPI VTune installation, carrying a valid Intel signature and matching an installed VTune version, is consistent with the legitimate utility. A copy in Downloads, Temp, AppData, a random Startup folder or an unrelated program directory is not established as Intel EMON merely because the spelling matches. Treat that file as unverified until its owner and signature are clear.

Safety is also version-dependent. On August 13, 2024, Intel published a security advisory for CVE-2024-28953, warning that a potential vulnerability in some EMON software could allow escalation of privilege. Intel identified versions before 11.44 as potentially affected and listed Intel GPA releases before 2023.4, VTune releases before 2024.1 and oneAPI Base Toolkit releases before 2024.1 among the affected product lines. Updating the package from Intel’s official download channel is safer than keeping an old executable or replacing it with a file from an executable-download site.
Windows security features can also affect performance-analysis tools. Secure Boot, Core isolation, processor protections and the vulnerable-driver blocklist may prevent a component or driver from loading. A block or warning in Windows Security does not, by itself, identify which similarly named program you have; use the file path and publisher information to connect the warning to the right application.
How can I identify which emon.exe I have?
Use the running process and its file properties as evidence. Do not rely on the name shown in a pop-up or on a search result that describes a different product.
- Open the location. In Task Manager, right-click the process on the Details tab and choose Open file location. If the process has already exited, inspect the shortcut, startup entry, service or scheduled task that launched it.
- Record the complete path. Save the drive, every folder, filename and file extension. The documented Intel example is under
InteloneAPIvtune2024.0bin64, not a generic Windows system folder. - Check properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review Details for product and version information. On the Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Identify the parent application. Look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps for VTune, oneAPI or another program installed at the same time. If the path belongs to a different application, follow that vendor’s repair or uninstall procedure instead of applying Intel-specific fixes.
- Scan the exact file. Use Windows Security’s custom-scan option on the file and its containing folder. A clean scan is useful evidence but is not a guarantee; combine it with the path, signature, version and owner.

Three spellings are easy to confuse. Their identities and remedies are different, so copy the name exactly when searching your own system.

Capitalization is not a security feature on Windows, but the additional letter in emmon.exe matters when identifying the program. A search for “emon” can return all three names and lead you to the wrong repair instructions.

Should I delete emon.exe?
Do not delete it as a first response. Deletion can break VTune, an analysis workflow or an unrelated application, and it will not repair a driver, firmware problem or a blue-screen condition. Remove software through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or the application’s own uninstaller after you have confirmed which program owns the file.

When removal is reasonable
- You have confirmed that the file belongs to an application you no longer use and the application has been uninstalled or is being intentionally removed.
- The file is an unverified leftover, and a current security scan plus review of startup, service and scheduled-task entries shows that it is not required by a legitimate program.
- The owning vendor’s documented cleanup procedure specifically instructs you to remove the component.
When removal is the wrong fix
- The file is in the Intel VTune directory and you still need VTune for profiling.
- Windows reports a missing-file error after an incomplete update or uninstall; reinstalling the owning package restores the correct files and registrations.
- The symptom is a stop code, device failure or system freeze. Those problems require Windows, driver and hardware diagnostics, not blind deletion of a user-mode executable.
How do I fix an Intel emon.exe missing or cannot-start error?
Work from the owner outward. The following sequence preserves evidence, repairs the installation and avoids downloading an untrusted replacement.
1. Capture the error and installation details
Write down the complete message, the program that displayed it, the time it appeared and the path Windows reports for emon.exe. In Task Manager, record the command line and startup source when available. These details distinguish “VTune cannot find its own component” from “another program is invoking a file with a similar name.”
2. Confirm the Intel package
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for Intel VTune, Intel oneAPI or Intel GPA. Compare the installed version with the folder name. If there is no Intel package and the path is outside an Intel directory, stop using Intel instructions and investigate the actual owner.

4. Repair or reinstall
If updating does not restore the file, uninstall the affected Intel component from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and install a current package. Keep project files and analysis results in a separate folder before uninstalling. Do not copy emon.exe from another PC: matching filenames can have different builds, dependencies and signatures.
5. Check permissions and security controls
Run the installer with an administrator account if Intel’s installer requires it. Review Windows Security notifications for a blocked driver or controlled-folder event. If Core isolation or the vulnerable-driver blocklist prevents a component from loading, update the Intel package first; do not weaken Windows protections simply to make an old build run.
6. Test from the owning application
Launch VTune and run a small, known-good collection rather than double-clicking the executable. EMON is a command-line component and may expect arguments, environment variables or companion files supplied by VTune. A direct double-click can therefore produce a misleading “cannot start” message even when the installation is intact.

How do I troubleshoot crashes, freezes or blue screens associated with emon.exe?

- Retest without profiling. Run the game or application with VTune collection disabled. If the crash disappears, update VTune and the relevant drivers before re-enabling analysis; do not infer that deleting EMON is a permanent fix.
How do I handle an older Intel EMON security advisory?
Find the package version, not just the file’s timestamp. A valid digital signature ties the file to a publisher; a security scan checks for known or suspicious content; neither proves that the file is the Intel build you intended to install.
