endgame.exe is not one standard Windows component. The filename has been used by legitimate enterprise security software, at least one game distributed through Steam, and a separate suspicious sample. Consequently, the name alone cannot tell you whether a particular file is safe. Identify the exact file path, signer, hash, parent process and installation source before deleting or repairing it.
This guide shows how to make that identification, investigate CPU or pop-up errors, use Windows Security and Event Viewer, and choose a repair path for a known game, a managed security agent or an unexpected executable.

What is endgame.exe?
endgame.exe is a filename shared by unrelated Windows programs rather than a single Microsoft system file. Elastic documentation uses “Elastic Endgame” as an endpoint-security data source, and AV-Comparatives reviewed an “Endgame Protection Platform” in its Business Security Test for August–November 2018. That establishes that a legitimate business security installation can contain an Endgame executable, but it does not authenticate every file with that name.
A game can also install the same name. SteamDB records a 16 July 2024 manifest containing EndGame.exe at 157.00 KiB and EndGame/Binaries/Win64/EndGame-Win64-Shipping.exe at 122.64 MiB. Those measurements describe one particular game build, not a standard size that every safe copy should have.

Finally, Hybrid Analysis has a 7 September 2021 submission named endgame.exe that was a PE32 Windows executable with a threat score of 58/100 and 14% antivirus detection. Those values apply only to that uploaded sample. They are not a prevalence rate and do not prove that every file called endgame.exe is malicious.
Is endgame.exe safe?
It may be safe, unwanted or malicious; the answer depends on the individual file. A copy in the installation directory of a game you deliberately installed, with a valid expected publisher signature, is materially different from a similarly named file in a temporary, startup or publicly writable folder.
Recommended Free Tools
Use all of the following signals together:
- Installation source: a known game store, the security administrator of a managed organization, or an unknown download.
- Full path: the vendor or game directory is more explainable than a random user-writable or temporary location.
- Digital signature: the subject, validity and trust chain should match the software you expect.
- SHA-256 hash: compare the preserved hash with a publisher release record or a reputable malware-analysis service.
- Parent process and command line: determine what launched the executable and with which arguments.
- Persistence: check whether it starts through a service, scheduled task, startup entry or run key.
- Network behavior: unexpected outbound connections deserve investigation, especially when the file has no known product owner.
- Device management: an organization-managed computer may legitimately run an endpoint agent that should not be removed by the user.
No single signal is conclusive. A missing signature is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of malware; a valid signature is evidence about the signer, not a guarantee that the file is appropriate for your computer.
How do I identify the copy of endgame.exe on my PC?
Start with evidence collection. Do not delete the file before recording its location and hash, because removal can erase the clues needed to identify the owner.
- Open Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab, locateendgame.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path, including the drive letter. - Record the file properties. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the size, creation or modification dates, product name, company and original filename shown on the Details tab.
- Inspect the signature. On Properties > Digital Signatures, select each signer and choose Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the subject is the publisher you expect. An absent, invalid or unexpected signer should move the file into the investigation path.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash. In PowerShell, run
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath "C:fullpathendgame.exe", replacing the path with the one you copied. Save the hexadecimal hash in your notes before quarantining or repairing anything. - Check the running process. In an elevated PowerShell window, run
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process -Filter "Name = 'endgame.exe'" | Select-Object ProcessId,ParentProcessId,ExecutablePath,CommandLine,CreationDate. Match the reported path to Task Manager and note the parent process ID and command line. - Establish when it appeared. Compare the file’s creation time with the date you installed the game, security agent or other application. A first-seen time that has no connection to an installation or update is a useful escalation clue.
Elastic’s Windows investigation guidance specifically calls out executable path, code-signature subject and trust, hash and original filename when triaging unexpected executable creation. A conflict among those fields is more significant than the filename itself.

What do different endgame.exe locations and owners mean?
| Possible owner | Evidence in the available data | Practical next action |
|---|---|---|
| Game installation | SteamDB lists a 16 July 2024 manifest with EndGame.exe (157.00 KiB) and a Win64 shipping binary (122.64 MiB). |
Verify the game and store account, then use that store’s repair or reinstall function. |
| Enterprise endpoint security | Elastic identifies “Elastic Endgame” as a Windows endpoint-security data source; AV-Comparatives reviewed an Endgame Protection Platform in its August–November 2018 business test. | Ask the organization’s security administrator to validate and repair or upgrade the managed agent. |
| Unexpected or unwanted program | The installation source is unknown, the path is user-writable or temporary, or the signer and hash do not match an expected product. | Quarantine through Windows Security, uninstall the associated application and investigate persistence and network activity. |
| Detected sample | Hybrid Analysis reports one 7 September 2021 endgame.exe sample with threat score 58/100 and 14% antivirus detection. |
Treat the individual file as suspicious evidence; do not generalize its score to other copies. |
The table is a triage map, not a verdict. A game can be installed outside the default library, and a managed security agent can reside in a vendor-specific directory. Always reconcile the path and signer with the product that is actually present.
Why is endgame.exe using CPU, memory or disk?
High resource use does not identify the owner. A game executable may be rendering or compiling shaders, an endpoint agent may be scanning, and an unwanted process may be looping or performing background activity. First determine which product launched the process and whether the load occurs only during a game, scan or update.
Check the timing and resource pattern
- In Task Manager, sort the Processes or Details tab by CPU, memory and disk, then note whether the load is continuous or stops when the associated game or security console closes.
- On the Details tab, add or view Command line if available and compare the process path with the file you inspected.
- Record the start time, peak resource use and any accompanying Windows Security detection. A short spike during an update is different from sustained use after an unknown program launches at every sign-in.
Reduce risk while investigating
Do not terminate or uninstall a managed endpoint agent on a work computer without the administrator’s approval. For an unknown file, disconnect the computer from sensitive work or networks while you collect evidence, then use Windows Security rather than adding an exclusion merely to silence a warning. Microsoft notes that an exclusion prevents real-time checking for the excluded item.
How do I scan endgame.exe with Windows Security?
Microsoft recommends trusted download sources, current antivirus protection, removal of unwanted software, updated security intelligence and a full scan. Windows Security is the appropriate first-line tool for an unexpected copy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu and select Virus & threat protection.
- Install any available security-intelligence update, then open Scan options and select Full scan. Start the scan and allow it to finish.
- Return to Virus & threat protection and open Protection history or Current threats to review the action taken on the file. Quarantine or remove a detection according to the recommendation shown.
- If the file returns, cannot be removed, or Windows Security reports that the threat persists, select Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan and choose Scan now. Save work first; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
- After the restart, review Protection history again. If the executable belongs to a game or managed product, repair that product rather than restoring an unknown file from quarantine.
Microsoft also documents real-time protection and Controlled folder access in Windows Security. Keep real-time protection enabled during the investigation, and do not create a Defender exclusion for endgame.exe just because an application displays an error.

How do I use Event Viewer to connect an error with Defender?
Event Viewer can show whether a scan, completion, detection or engine problem happened at the same time as the endgame.exe message.
- Press
Win+R, entereventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - In the left pane, open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Windows Defender > Operational.
- Sort by date and inspect entries around the time of the error. Microsoft identifies event 1000 as a scan started, 1001 as a scan completed and 1006 as malware or potentially unwanted software detected.
- Open a relevant event and save the exact time, event ID, detection name, path and action. Use Save Selected Events if you need to send the record to an administrator or game-support team.
An event showing a completed clean scan does not certify an unidentified file; it only describes what that scan detected with the definitions and scope used. Conversely, a detection event should be treated as a product-specific finding for the path shown in the event.
How do I fix endgame.exe errors when it belongs to a known game?
Repair the product that installed the executable, not Windows at random. SteamDB’s manifest shows why a game may have a small launcher and a much larger versioned Win64 binary, so an error in one component can require a complete product verification.
Use the game’s official repair function
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open the official store or launcher library, select the game, and choose its Verify, Repair or equivalent file-integrity command.
- Allow the launcher to reacquire missing or changed files. Do not copy an
endgame.exedownloaded from a random website into the game directory. - Restart Windows and test the game without disabling Windows Security. If the same dialog returns, capture its exact text, the executable path and the launcher’s log, then contact the game’s support channel.
If you moved the game manually, check that the launcher still points to the correct library and that the account owns the title. A valid game executable in the wrong working directory can produce a launch error even when the file itself is clean.

How do I fix endgame.exe when it belongs to enterprise security software?
On an organization-managed computer, treat the executable as part of the security control until an administrator confirms otherwise. Elastic’s documentation and the AV-Comparatives review establish that Endgame security software has existed as a legitimate business product, but neither source authenticates an arbitrary copy.

- Record the path, signer, hash, parent process and error text without deleting the file.
- Contact the security or IT administrator and provide those records, the computer name and the time the error occurred.
- Use only the administrator’s managed upgrade, repair or uninstall procedure. Endpoint agents can have tamper protection, services and policy dependencies that a normal file deletion breaks.
- After the administrator changes the agent, restart and confirm that Windows Security and the organization’s management console report the expected protection state.
Do not substitute a consumer cleanup step for a managed security procedure. Removing an agent may violate organizational policy or leave the computer without its intended monitoring.
What should I do with an unexpected or detected endgame.exe?
For a file with no recognized owner, an invalid or unexpected signature, a suspicious path, or a Windows Security detection, preserve evidence and contain it before attempting cleanup.
- Disconnect from sensitive work and avoid signing in to banking or administrative accounts on the affected computer while you investigate.
- In Windows Security, quarantine the detected file or allow the recommended removal action. Do not restore it merely because an application reports that it is missing.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and uninstall the unknown application that installed the file.
- Review Task Manager > Startup apps, Task Scheduler and Windows services for entries that launch the same path. Disable or remove only entries you can positively associate with the unwanted program; seek expert help when the owner is unclear.
- Update Defender security intelligence, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if the file returns or cannot be removed.
- Change credentials from a separate, trusted device if you observed suspicious account activity, and preserve the hash and Event Viewer records for incident response.
Never add a Defender exclusion to make an error disappear. Microsoft warns that exclusions stop real-time checking for the excluded item, which can hide a later detection.
What if the error remains after a clean scan?
There is no canonical endgame.exe error-code catalog because the filename maps to multiple unrelated products. A clean scan also does not tell you which application should supply a missing or damaged file.
Capture a reproducible report containing:
- the exact dialog text and any numeric error code;
- the application or game that displayed it;
- the complete executable path and file size;
- the digital-signature subject and validity result;
- the SHA-256 hash and original filename;
- the parent process, command line and first-seen time;
- relevant Defender Operational event IDs and timestamps; and
- whether the computer is managed by an organization.
Give that report to the game’s official support team, the software vendor or your organization’s administrator. Avoid generic DLL download sites and registry “repair” scripts: they can replace evidence with an unrelated binary and make attribution harder.

How can I prevent a repeat endgame.exe problem?
- Install games and utilities only from their official stores or vendors, and keep the launcher and Windows updated.
- Leave Windows Security real-time protection and security-intelligence updates enabled unless an administrator has a documented reason to change them.
- Keep a record of software installation dates and managed security-agent ownership on work computers.
- When an executable suddenly appears, hash and inspect it before deleting, restoring or excluding it.
- Back up important files so that an offline scan, a product reinstall or an incident-response step does not become a data-loss event.
The reliable decision is evidence-based: a known path, expected signer, matching hash and recognized owner support repair through that product; conflicting evidence supports quarantine and escalation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete endgame.exe from the Windows folder?
Do not delete it solely because of its name or because it appears in a Windows-related directory. First confirm the path, signer, hash and owner; deleting a game file or managed endpoint agent can break the product, while an unknown detected file should be quarantined through Windows Security.
Why does Windows say endgame.exe is missing after an update?
An update may have removed or replaced a file, or Windows Security may have quarantined it. Check Protection history, then use the official game’s or application’s repair function; restoring a file is appropriate only after its owner and signature are confirmed.
Does a 58/100 Hybrid Analysis score mean my file is infected?
No. That score and the reported 14% antivirus detection describe one sample submitted on 7 September 2021. Compare your file’s path, signer and SHA-256 hash with the sample and use a current Windows Security scan before drawing a conclusion.
How can I tell whether my PC is managed by an Endgame security product?
Look for an organization-owned security console, management service or IT documentation, then ask your security administrator to confirm the agent’s path and signer. Do not uninstall or stop a suspected endpoint agent on a work computer without that approval.
