erlsrv.exe is the Windows service wrapper included with Erlang/OTP. It registers and controls Erlang-based services, rather than being a core Windows component. A copy is usually legitimate when it is inside an Erlang runtime folder such as erts-, has a trusted publisher signature, and belongs to software you installed. The filename alone does not prove safety. Unexpected copies in a temporary, Downloads, profile, or unrelated system folder deserve a malware scan and a check of the program that created them. Most startup errors come from a stale service registration, an invalid Erlang emulator path, an unusable working directory, or incompatible arguments.
What does erlsrv.exe do?
erlsrv.exe is Erlang/OTP’s Windows utility for running an Erlang emulator as a Windows service. Erlang applications used for messaging, development, automation, network appliances, and other server tasks can install a background service; erlsrv.exe supplies the commands that register, configure, start, stop, enable, disable, list, and remove that service. Is erlsrv.exe safe?
It can be safe, but you must establish provenance from the full path, signature, service registration, and parent application. A malicious program can use a familiar filename, so a filename-only check is not enough.
Signs of a legitimate copy
- The file is below an Erlang/OTP runtime’s
erts-directory or inside a recognized Erlang-based product’s installation folder.bin - The Windows service that launches it has a display name and description that match software you intentionally installed.
- The file’s Properties → Digital Signatures tab shows a trusted signer, where the product provides a signature.
- The parent application’s installer, update history, or inventory lists Erlang/OTP as a component.
Reasons to treat a copy as suspicious
- The path points to a user profile, temporary directory, Downloads folder, recycle-bin location, or an unrelated system directory.
- There is no recognizable parent application, the service name is random, or the executable was created shortly before unexplained pop-ups or network activity.
- The signature is absent or invalid and the installer cannot explain why the file exists.
- Several copies exist in unrelated folders and none belongs to an installed Erlang product.
A signed Erlang-based binary bundled with a vendor product can still be legitimate even if a security scanner reports that the product exposes a service or network port. Conversely, a file with the right name but no trustworthy origin should be scanned before it is allowed to run.

Seeing the process or service repeatedly usually means an Erlang-based application is configured to start with Windows, or the service’s failure policy is retrying after an unexpected emulator exit. It does not, by itself, indicate malware.
- Automatic startup: the owning application registered an Erlang node as an automatic Windows service.
- Restart policy: the registration’s
OnFailsetting can restart the emulator after a crash. - Product updates: an update may recreate or repair the service registration.
- Multiple runtimes: an old release and a new release can leave separate services or paths behind.
- Immediate failure: a bad path or argument can make the service exit, after which Windows or
erlsrv.exetries again.
Identify the service display name and its executable path before disabling anything. Stopping an Erlang service can also stop a product that depends on it, such as a message broker, development tool, or vendor appliance.
How do I verify the file and its owning service?
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find
erlsrv.exeif it is running, right-click it, and choose Open file location. If it is not running, open Services by pressing Win+R, enteringservices.msc, and locating a service associated with Erlang or the suspected product. - Record the complete path, including the drive and every version folder. A path under an Erlang runtime’s
erts-directory is the expected pattern; a path elsewhere needs an explanation from the parent installer.bin - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures. Select a signature, choose Details, and confirm Windows reports that the signature is valid. An unsigned file is not automatically malicious, but you then need installer or hash evidence from the owning product.

What causes erlsrv.exe application and service-start errors?
The exact diagnosis depends on the service name, full path, error text, and Event Viewer entry. The common failure points are configuration values that no longer match the installed runtime.
Broken Machine path
The Machine value is the complete path to the Erlang emulator. It normally points to erl.exe beside erlsrv.exe, or to start_erl.exe for a release setup. A path left over from an uninstalled Erlang version produces errors such as Windows being unable to find the file or the service exiting immediately. The registration must not point to werl.exe.
Invalid WorkDir
WorkDir is the initial working directory for the service. It must be on a local drive and be accessible with the service account’s permissions. A mapped drive can exist for your interactive logon but not when Windows starts a service before you sign in. A deleted folder, a read-only location, or a directory without write permission can prevent startup or log creation.
Stale environment or arguments
Environment variables and Erlang arguments may contain an old release path, a missing configuration file, an invalid node name, or an option no longer supported by the installed release. A runtime DLL that was removed or mismatched during a partial upgrade can also prevent the emulator process from being created.
Registry or process-creation failure
The service reads its registration from the Windows service registry. Errors can occur when the keys cannot be read, the emulator process cannot be created, the working directory is invalid, or the service cannot wait for the child process. Event Viewer and the service’s diagnostic log can distinguish these cases.

How do I inspect and repair an erlsrv registration?
Perform these steps from an elevated Command Prompt after you have confirmed the service belongs to software you still need.
- Open the Erlang runtime’s
erts-folder in File Explorer. Hold Shift, right-click an empty area, and select Open in Terminal or open Command Prompt as administrator and change to that directory withbin cd /d "C:pathtoerts-.bin" - List the service registration with
erlsrv list <service-name>. Replace the placeholder with the actual service name, not merely its friendly display name. Review the reportedMachine,WorkDir, environment, arguments, andOnFailvalues. - Compare
Machinewith the files in the same runtime. Confirm that the target executable exists, that its dependent runtime files are present, and that the path is quoted correctly when it contains spaces. - Change the registration using the owning product’s documented installer or service-registration procedure. The registration can set DebugType to none, new, reuse, or console. For a service that exits before Event Viewer provides enough detail, temporarily select new or reuse through the product’s registration command, then reproduce the failure and inspect the service debug log in WorkDir.

A configured StopAction is expected to stop the emulator within 30 seconds. If it does not, the Windows service manager can continue to report the service as running even though the child process is unresponsive. Allow the stop operation to complete or use the owning product’s documented shutdown method rather than repeatedly killing processes.
What should I do when Windows cannot find erlsrv.exe?
This message usually means the service registration still references an Erlang release that was moved or removed. First open the service properties and copy the exact Path to executable. Then check whether that folder and the referenced erlsrv.exe, erl.exe, and runtime files still exist.
- If the parent application is still installed, use its Repair option or rerun its installer so it can restore the matching Erlang runtime and service registration.
- If the application was upgraded, locate the new runtime and update the service through the application’s supported procedure instead of copying one executable into the old folder.
- If the application has been intentionally removed, disable and remove its orphaned service only after confirming that no other installed component depends on it.
- Restart Windows, then verify that the service points to the restored runtime and that the parent application functions normally.
Copying erlsrv.exe from another computer is a poor repair: the executable, emulator, DLLs, release files, and registry values must match. A complete runtime or product repair is safer.

Can I delete erlsrv.exe?
Do not delete it merely because it is unfamiliar or because the service is currently stopped. If the file belongs to an installed Erlang-based product, deleting it can break updates, service removal, or future starts. Uninstall or repair the parent application instead.
Removal is reasonable only when you have established that the file is orphaned or malicious and have followed your security team’s procedure.
