The message describes an active session conflict. It does not, on its own, show that someone else has your password or has accessed your account. Players have reported it after teleporting between places and when an older Roblox client was still running in the background. Roblox staff said in October 2025 that changes had been made to address the background-client problem. As of October 8, 2026, Roblox’s official error-code index does not list code 273, so there is no dedicated official explanation or code-specific fix to point to.
What the message says
The full wording, “Same account launched experience from different device,” describes what Roblox believes has happened: another session for the same account is active. A 2021 reply in the Roblox Developer Forum described it as the same account trying to join the same game from two or more devices, and suggested checking other sessions. That is community guidance from a forum thread, not the Roblox Help Center definition of the error, so treat it as a starting point rather than an official answer.

Why it can appear without a second person
Because the message reports a session conflict rather than a confirmed intrusion, several ordinary situations can trigger it. Two of them are documented in Developer Forum reports.

Some players reported seeing Error 273 immediately after teleporting from one place to another, even when they were certain only one device was in use. The transition briefly leaves two sessions looking active to Roblox, which can produce the message when there is only one real player. This is a pattern in user reports, not a documented official cause.

Older clients still running in the background
In a 2023 forum report, a player suspected that the Roblox client had not fully closed and was still running in the background. A stale client can look like a second device to the servers. Checking for leftover Roblox windows or processes is the most direct test for this scenario.

“We made some changes to address the issue of multiple instances running in the background and we believe this issue should now be resolved, but do let us know if you are still having issues.”
This is a staff update on a specific thread. It is a sign that the background-instance cause was being worked on, not a promise that the error can never return.

What to check, in order
Start with the lowest-risk steps. Most of them take less than a few minutes, and none require changing your account.
- Reconnect once. Leave the experience, return to the Roblox home screen, and rejoin. If the error clears, note which experience and whether it followed a teleport.
- Close other Roblox clients you control. Check other browser tabs running Roblox, any other desktop or mobile device signed in to your account, and any leftover Roblox process. On Windows, look for Roblox in Task Manager and end it. On macOS, use Force Quit for any remaining Roblox app, then reopen the game.
- Review active sessions if you have reason to. If you share the account or use it on several devices, look for a session or login-activity list in your account settings. Sign out sessions you do not need. A 2021 forum reply recommended this same step and also suggested updating the launcher, which is a reasonable check rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Secure the account if a session is unfamiliar. End any session you do not recognize and change your password. Do this because of the unfamiliar session, not because error 273 alone proves unauthorized access.
- Run general connection checks if you also have connection symptoms. Try a wired connection if one is available, review firewall and router settings that might block Roblox, and reinstall the app only as a later step. Roblox’s connection guidance covers connection problems in general and does not mention Error 273 specifically.
- Contact Roblox Support if the error continues. Include the exact error text, your device model, the operating-system version, and the steps that reproduce the problem. If it happens only in one experience or directly after a teleport, name that experience and the time of the failure.
Reading the pattern
The pattern of failures is the most useful clue you have. These interpretations come from user reports and are meant to narrow the search, not to serve as definitive tests.

| What you observe | What it may suggest | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only in one experience, or right after a teleport | A transition or experience-specific session issue | Note the experience name and timing, then report it to Support |
| Across several experiences, on any teleport | A broader account or session conflict | Check active sessions and close other clients before reporting |
| Appears after you closed Roblox on one device | A client that did not fully close | End leftover Roblox processes and reopen the app once |
| Accompanied by a session you do not recognize | Possible unauthorized access | End the unfamiliar session and change your password |
Current service status
When checked on October 8, 2026, Roblox Status showed all systems operational. Its recent history listed a broad site issue on October 5, 2026, marked resolved. A status page is a snapshot at one moment and cannot tell you what caused an individual Error 273 message, so use it only to rule out a platform-wide outage.

What remains unconfirmed
- No official Roblox Help Center article specific to Error 273 was found, and the official error-code and bug-reporting indexes do not list it.
- No published statistic describes how often Error 273 occurs. Player reports and forum threads are anecdotes and should not be read as a measure of how widespread the problem is.
- The causes described above are reported patterns. Roblox has not published a complete list of what triggers the message.
Until Roblox publishes a dedicated explanation, the practical approach is to rule out a second active session, secure the account if anything looks unfamiliar, and give Support enough detail to reproduce the failure.
