explorerexerestart.exe has no established identity in authoritative Windows or security documentation reviewed for this article. Its name resembles Windows’ legitimate Explorer.exe, but the strings are not the same, so the filename alone cannot prove that it is safe, malicious, or even part of Windows. Treat it as untrusted until you check its complete path, publisher, digital signature, SHA-256 hash, and antivirus result. Do not delete it or create an antivirus exclusion simply because it contains the word “explorer.” If your symptom is a normal File Explorer crash, use Windows’ update, restart, system-file repair, recovery, and reset options; if a security scan identifies this exact file, quarantine or remove it through the security tool.
What is explorerexerestart.exe?
No authoritative Windows or security source identifies explorerexerestart.exe as a standard Windows component, a documented Microsoft utility, or a known malware family. That absence is important: it means the filename is unidentified, not automatically dangerous. A legitimate Windows shell process is named Explorer.exe; adding “exerestart” creates a different filename that should not be assumed to be the shell.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe name may come from an unwanted program, a badly named helper, a third-party restart script, a corrupted installation, or simple user or software error. You need the file’s location and cryptographic identity to distinguish those possibilities. The same filename in a protected Windows directory and in a user profile’s temporary folder would have very different risk profiles, but neither location alone is conclusive.
Why the spelling matters
Windows process names are exact strings. Explorer.exe is not interchangeable with explorerexerestart.exe, even though both contain “explorer.” Malware and potentially unwanted applications sometimes use familiar-looking names, while legitimate installers can also use unusual helper names. Treat the spelling as a clue to investigate, not as a verdict.

Is explorerexerestart.exe safe or a virus?
You cannot answer that question from the name alone. Microsoft defines malware as malicious software and separately describes potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), which are not necessarily malware but can display unwanted advertising, install unexpected software, or use system resources for activities such as cryptomining. Those definitions support a cautious inspection and scanning process, not a claim that this particular executable is malicious.
Evidence that raises or lowers concern
| Evidence | What it can tell you | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Complete file path | A path under a known program installation may explain the file; a randomly named file in a temporary or user-profile folder deserves more scrutiny. | Malware can copy itself into plausible folders, and legitimate software can use temporary folders during installation. |
| Publisher and digital signature | A valid signature from the expected publisher shows who signed the file and whether it changed after signing. | An unsigned file is not automatically malicious, and a stolen or abused certificate does not make software safe. |
| SHA-256 hash | A hash lets an administrator or security service compare the exact bytes with a known sample. | A hash has meaning only when matched against a trusted reputation or incident record. |
| Defender or other antivirus detection | A current detection provides the strongest immediate reason to quarantine the file and investigate related components. | A clean result is not proof of safety, particularly for new or heavily obfuscated files. |
| Behavior | Unexpected persistence, network connections, pop-ups, disabled security, or high CPU use can indicate unwanted activity. | Some legitimate updaters and shell extensions also run at startup or use network access. |
How do I identify explorerexerestart.exe safely?
Collect evidence before changing the file. The following procedure works on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions; wording can vary slightly by update.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Record where it runs. Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Details tab, right-click the process, choose Open file location, and copy the complete path. If the process is not running, search File Explorer for the exact filename and note every copy. - Inspect file properties. Right-click the file, select Properties, and review General, Details, and Digital Signatures. Note the company, product name, original filename, creation date, and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid. A signature tab may be absent; that is evidence to record, not proof of infection.
- Calculate a hash. In PowerShell, use
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "C:fullpathexplorerexerestart.exe", replacing the path with the one you recorded. Save the resulting hash so a trusted administrator or security vendor can compare the exact file rather than relying on its name. - Check how it starts. In Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, review entries that point to the file. Also inspect Settings > Apps > Startup and, for advanced troubleshooting, Task Scheduler’s Task Scheduler Library. Do not disable or delete a task until you have recorded its action, trigger, publisher, and path.
- Look for related software. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by install date and identify programs added when the file first appeared. Uninstall only software you recognize and no longer need; an unknown publisher should be investigated rather than removed impulsively.
- Preserve a copy if an investigation is needed. Do not open the executable to “test” it. If an administrator or incident-response team needs it, place a copy in a controlled location and avoid uploading confidential files to public scanners.
How do I scan and remove a suspicious explorerexerestart.exe?
Use current security intelligence and let the security product make the quarantine decision. Microsoft Defender’s terminology and menu positions can differ by Windows release, but the sequence is consistent.
- Update first. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates, and choose Check for updates. Also install available Windows updates and restart when requested. Microsoft says Defender is designed to block malware before infection, but its detection quality depends on current intelligence.
- Run a full scan. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose Full scan. Keep the computer powered on; a full scan can take considerably longer than a quick scan. If Defender identifies the exact file, choose Quarantine or the recommended removal action and record the detection name.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline when persistence is suspected. Offline scanning restarts the PC into a trusted environment before normal Windows processes load. Save work first and follow the on-screen restart prompt; the result appears in Protection history after Windows starts again.
- Consider Microsoft Safety Scanner. This separate, on-demand Microsoft utility can provide an additional check when you suspect an active compromise. Download a current copy from Microsoft, because its malware definitions expire; it complements, rather than replaces, continuous antimalware protection.
- Use the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) only for its intended scope. Microsoft describes MSRT as a utility for removing specific prevalent threats, not as a substitute for always-on protection. Microsoft’s Download Center listed MSRT version 5.146, published October 13, 2026, with a file size of 82.8 MB. Microsoft generally delivers it through Windows Update on the second Tuesday of each month; that schedule says nothing about whether your unknown executable is safe.
- Restart and rescan. After quarantine, restart Windows and run another scan. Check Protection history for repeated detections and review startup entries again. Reappearance from a different path suggests a related installer, scheduled task, browser extension, or account compromise that needs broader investigation.
Do not add the file to Defender’s exclusions merely because a program stops working when it is blocked. An exclusion allows future activity without normal scanning and should be used only when a trusted administrator has verified the publisher, purpose, and hash.

Can I delete explorerexerestart.exe?
Do not delete it blindly. Deletion can break a legitimate third-party application, remove evidence needed to identify an unwanted program, or leave a scheduled task that recreates the file. If a security product detects it, quarantine is safer than permanent deletion because quarantine is reversible while the investigation continues.
When removal is reasonable
- The file is positively identified by a current security scan and the product recommends removal.
- A trusted administrator confirms that it belongs to software you have intentionally uninstalled.
- You have recorded the path, signature, hash, and related startup entries, and you have a recovery plan.
When to stop and get help
- Defender, Offline scan, or another reputable scanner reports a serious threat.
- Security settings are disabled, accounts behave unexpectedly, or files are being encrypted.
- The file runs from multiple locations or returns after quarantine.
- The PC is used for work, banking, or other sensitive activity and you cannot establish its origin.
Disconnecting from the internet can limit further communication while you seek help, but do not destroy logs or wipe the machine before an administrator has assessed it. Change important passwords from a known-clean device if compromise is suspected.

Why does explorerexerestart.exe appear when I restart Windows?
Several different events can look similar in a notification or Task Manager. A startup entry or scheduled task may launch an unfamiliar executable during sign-in; a third-party shell utility may be attempting to restart Explorer; or a normal Explorer.exe shutdown message may be mistaken for this unrelated filename.
Distinguish the documented Explorer.exe message
Microsoft documents a specific Explorer shutdown error in which the shutdown process continues and the error can safely be ignored. That statement applies to the documented Explorer.exe scenario only. It does not certify explorerexerestart.exe, and it does not explain an executable found at an unexpected path.

- In Task Manager, note the exact time and parent process when the executable appears.
- Check Startup apps, Settings > Apps > Startup, and Task Scheduler for an action pointing to the file.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for entries at the same time. Record the faulting application and module without deleting logs.

How do I fix explorerexerestart.exe errors when File Explorer is unstable?
If scans do not identify the file as a threat and your actual problem is Explorer crashing, freezing, or failing to restart, follow Windows’ repair sequence. These steps address the operating system and its shell; they do not turn the unknown filename into a trusted component.
1. Install updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if required. Microsoft’s support guidance specifically recommends installing available updates and restarting the device. Test Explorer after the restart before making deeper changes.
2. Restart the Explorer process
Open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer under Processes, and choose Restart. This reloads the shell without deleting personal files. If Windows Explorer is absent, use Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter; verify that the process is the genuine Windows executable rather than the similarly named file.
3. Run Windows system-file checks
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run sfc /scannow. Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, then restart. If SFC reports that it could not repair files, record the message and use Windows Update or recovery options rather than downloading replacement DLLs from an unknown website.

4. Use built-in maintenance and recovery
For continuing crashes, use the troubleshooting and recovery options available in Settings > System > Recovery (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (Windows 10). Microsoft’s documented options include system maintenance, Startup Repair or Automatic Repair when Windows cannot start correctly, and reset or reinstall choices when repairs fail. Back up personal data before any reset and read whether the selected option keeps or removes files.
5. Test for a third-party conflict
Booting with only essential services can show whether a startup program is causing Explorer to fail. Record the current startup configuration first, disable only clearly identified third-party entries, and re-enable items in groups so you can isolate the conflict. Do not disable security protections or Microsoft services as a substitute for identifying the executable.
6. Repair or remove the owning application
If the file belongs to a recognizable program with a valid signature, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open the program’s menu, and choose Advanced options > Repair or Reset when available. If the program is unwanted, uninstall it through Windows, restart, and scan again. Keep the executable quarantined until the application’s publisher confirms that it is required.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if Windows will not start?
Do not repeatedly launch the unknown executable. Allow Windows Recovery Environment to load after failed starts, or hold Shift while selecting Restart to open recovery from the sign-in screen. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair and follow the prompts. If recovery identifies a recent update or restore point as the cause, use the corresponding documented option and preserve scan results for later review.

If Startup Repair cannot restore booting, use Safe Mode only to collect evidence, uninstall a known conflicting application, or run a security scan. A reset or reinstall is a last resort because it can remove applications and, depending on the option, personal files. Back up data from a trusted environment first and obtain professional help when malware is suspected.
Which response is safest for each situation?
| Situation | Best first response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown path, unsigned file, no trusted owner | Record evidence, update Defender, run a full scan, and quarantine only on a detection. | It preserves reversibility while testing the highest-risk explanation. |
| Defender detects the file | Quarantine, run Offline scan if persistence is suspected, then investigate related startup items. | The detection provides stronger evidence than the filename. |
| Valid signature from software you installed, but Explorer crashes | Repair or update that application, then use Windows system-file and recovery tools. | The problem may be a third-party shell conflict rather than malware. |
| Only a documented Explorer.exe shutdown message appears | Install updates, restart, and follow Microsoft’s Explorer troubleshooting guidance. | The documented error can be benign, but it is not the same filename. |
| Repeated reappearance, disabled security, or account anomalies | Disconnect cautiously, preserve logs, run Offline scanning, and contact a qualified administrator. | System-wide compromise requires more than deleting one file. |
What should you remember before changing the file?
- A filename is an identifier, not proof of ownership or safety.
- The exact path, signature, hash, and current scan result are the core evidence.
- Quarantine is more reversible than deletion; exclusions remove a layer of protection.
- Microsoft’s Explorer.exe shutdown guidance does not apply to the different string explorerexerestart.exe.
- For ordinary Explorer failures, update and restart first, then use system-file checks and documented recovery options.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while offering settings tweaks, cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software, does not replace it, and results vary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the filename alone prove that explorerexerestart.exe is malware?
No. A filename can be copied by legitimate software or by malware, so identification requires the path, signature, hash, and security verdict. If those records conflict, preserve the file and ask a qualified administrator to review it rather than guessing.
Will reinstalling Windows always remove this executable?
A clean reinstall can remove software on the system drive, but it may also erase data and does not secure other computers, drives, or online accounts affected by a compromise. Investigate and back up safely before choosing that destructive option.
What is the difference between Defender Offline and a normal full scan?
A full scan runs inside the normal Windows session, where active software is already loaded. Defender Offline restarts into a separate environment, making it harder for persistent malware to hide or interfere with the scan.
Why might a clean scan still leave the file on disk?
Security tools can leave an unclassified or legitimate executable untouched because no malicious behavior has been established. Check whether a signed application owns it, whether a startup task launches it, and whether the file is actually producing the reported error.
