factorio.exe is the Windows executable for Factorio, Wube Software’s factory-building game. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. A legitimate installation normally comes from Factorio.com, Steam, or GOG, sits inside the Factorio installation folder, and corresponds to a release whose checksum matches Wube’s published manifest. An unexpected copy, a file in a temporary download directory, or a file quarantined by Windows Security should be investigated before you run it.

A normal installation may contain several other executables and data files, so seeing more than one Factorio-related file is not automatically suspicious. What matters is the source, location, version and integrity of the specific file that Windows is trying to run.
Is factorio.exe safe?
It can be safe when it came from an official Factorio channel and passes a current Windows Security check, but the name itself is not a safety guarantee. Malware can use a familiar filename, so treat an unexpected copy as untrusted until you verify it.
Check where the file came from
Prefer a copy installed or downloaded through Factorio.com, Steam or GOG. A copy in a user profile’s temporary folder, a system folder unrelated to the game, or an unfamiliar software directory deserves extra scrutiny. Path evidence is useful, but it is not proof by itself: an attacker can place a file in a convincing location.

Compare the complete hexadecimal result character for character. A match supports the integrity of that downloaded archive or package. It does not prove that an arbitrary file named factorio.exe elsewhere on the computer is genuine, and it does not establish that a third-party mod or repack is safe.
Scan with Windows Security without weakening protection
Open Windows Security and use Virus & threat protection to run the available quick or custom scan. Review Protection history for the detection name, affected path and action taken. If Windows Security quarantined the file, leave it quarantined while you verify the installer and investigate the alert.
Do not create a broad Defender exclusion simply to make the game launch. Microsoft warns that an exclusion stops real-time scanning for the excluded item and can leave the device more exposed. How do I fix “factorio.exe has stopped working” or a startup crash?
Use a clean, reversible sequence. Test the unmodified base game before changing several variables at once, and back up saves and mods before moving or deleting anything.

Incompatible or leftover mods can crash the game while loading a save or starting a new game. Back up your saves and the mods directory first, then temporarily move the mods out of the active Factorio data location and launch the base game.
