fake_cmnd.exe is not an identified Windows system component. A ThreatInfo malware report describes one file named Fake_CMND.exe with MD5 hash fbea5b53a595338279fab72a58d4e2b1 and a recorded detection of Ransom.Skeeyah. That report was analyzed on June 7, 2024, so it is evidence about that particular sample—not proof that every file with the same name is malicious or that the detection is current. To assess the file on your PC, verify its complete path, calculate its hash, check its signature and origin, and scan it before deleting anything. The safest repair for an “error” depends on whether the file is an unwanted executable, a leftover startup reference, or a legitimate program component with a damaged installation.

What exactly is fake_cmnd.exe?

The name is a filename, not an identity. Windows allows unrelated programs, archives and scripts to use the same name, so a filename match cannot establish that your copy is the sample described in the report.

The available ThreatInfo record identifies a sample called Fake_CMND.exe. Its metadata says the product was “Fake_CMND,” the company was “Home,” the file measured about 6 MB, and it was a 32-bit Windows GUI portable executable (PE). The report associates that sample with the detection name Ransom.Skeeyah. It lists June 7, 2024 as both the first and latest analysis date in that record.

The report also gives a commonly observed archive location: %mydoc%zalo received filesfile_20210712_111603_kháng via.rar. That is a reported observation, not proof that a file on your computer came from that archive. A local copy is the reported sample only if its identifying details, especially the complete hash, match.

What the report does not establish

  • It does not show that every fake_cmnd.exe is malicious.
  • It does not establish the current status of the 2024 detection.
  • It does not prove that the file is a Windows component or that it belongs to a particular game, launcher or utility.
  • It does not document a verified, version-specific cleanup procedure for every Windows installation.
  • It does not explain the cause of a generic “fake_cmnd.exe error.”

Those limits matter because deleting a same-named file from a trusted application could create a new problem, while ignoring an unexpected executable could leave a security risk in place.

Is fake_cmnd.exe safe?

You cannot answer safely from the name alone. Treat an unexpected copy as suspicious until you have checked its path, hash, origin, signature and scan results; treat a copy inside a known application as unverified rather than automatically safe.

Compare your file with the reported sample

Check Reported sample detail How to use it
Filename Fake_CMND.exe A name match is only a starting point.
MD5 fbea5b53a595338279fab72a58d4e2b1 An exact match is strong evidence that you have the same binary; a different hash means the report does not identify your file.
Size About 6 MB Record the exact byte size shown in Properties. A rounded size is not an identity check.
Format 32-bit Windows GUI PE Use Properties or a trusted scanner to see whether the file is an executable of this type.
Reported location %mydoc%zalo received filesfile_20210712_111603_kháng via.rar Compare the actual parent folder and how the file arrived; the path is not a guarantee of origin.
Report date 2024-06-07 The age means the recorded verdict is not a current independent confirmation.

Why path and origin matter

An executable launched from a temporary download, an extracted messaging attachment or an unfamiliar user folder deserves more scrutiny than one installed with software you recognize. Conversely, a file in a game’s installation directory is not automatically legitimate: mods, unofficial installers and repacked downloads can place unwanted executables there. Note which installer, archive, message or update created the file and whether you expected that event.

Check the publisher and signature

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if it exists. A valid signature from a publisher you recognize supports provenance; an absent, invalid or unknown signature is a warning, not conclusive proof of malware. Do not approve an elevated prompt merely because a file has a familiar name.

How do I verify the file before deleting it?

Make a record first. Verification prevents you from confusing a missing-file error with the suspicious object that caused it and gives a security scanner the exact item to inspect.

  1. Find the full path. In the error dialog, copy the location if available. Otherwise open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find a process named fake_cmnd.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If the process is not running, search File Explorer for the filename and record every match.
  2. Record Properties. Note the folder, file size, creation and modification dates, and whether Windows shows a publisher or signature. Do not run the file to discover what it does.
  3. Calculate the MD5 hash. Open PowerShell, change the quoted path to the file you found, and run:
    Get-FileHash -Algorithm MD5 "C:fullpathfake_cmnd.exe"
Compare the resulting 32-character value with fbea5b53a595338279fab72a58d4e2b1. Hashes are case-insensitive when compared as hexadecimal text.
  4. Check for duplicate copies. Several files with the same name can exist in different folders. Hash each copy separately; do not assume the first search result is the one generating the error.
  5. Preserve evidence if the file is suspicious. Do not email it, upload it to random analysis sites or open it on another computer. Keep the path and hash for your security software or administrator.

What should I do if the hash matches the reported sample?

An exact MD5 match makes your file the same binary identified in that report, so it should be treated as suspicious. Disconnecting the affected PC from the internet can limit further communication while you scan, but do not power it off if you need volatile evidence for an administrator or incident-response team.

  1. Disconnect selectively. Unplug Ethernet or turn off Wi-Fi if the machine is behaving unexpectedly or the file is running. Do not connect backup drives until the system has been checked.
  2. Run a reputable security scan. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, and run a Full scan. If the file persists or Windows Security cannot remove it, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan; Windows restarts and scans before the normal desktop loads.
  3. Quarantine through the security product. Let the scanner isolate the detected object rather than manually dragging it to the Recycle Bin. Record the detection name, action and time.
  4. Restart and scan again. A second scan after reboot checks whether a startup component recreated the file. If the scanner reports additional objects, handle them as a group and follow its remediation instructions.
  5. Change credentials from a clean device when warranted. If you opened the executable, supplied passwords while it was active, or see unexplained account activity, change important passwords from another trusted device and enable multi-factor authentication where available.

The report recommends scanning and removal for the sample it describes. That recommendation is not an independent, current confirmation of every local detection, and no universal cleanup sequence has been verified from the record.

How do I remove a fake_cmnd.exe startup error?

A popup can remain after a file has already been quarantined: Windows may still be trying to launch an obsolete startup entry. Remove the reference only after you have recorded its command and checked the file with security software.

Check ordinary startup entries

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable an entry that clearly points to the suspicious path. If the publisher and purpose are unknown, leave it disabled rather than deleting registry data.
  2. Open Task Manager > Startup apps, sort by name, and inspect the Open file location command for any matching entry.
  3. Press Win+R, enter shell:startup, and inspect shortcuts in your user Startup folder. Also check shell:common startup for all-user shortcuts. Remove only a shortcut that points to the verified unwanted file; keep the quarantined file itself under the scanner’s control.

Check scheduled tasks and services carefully

Search Windows for Task Scheduler and review Task Scheduler Library. Select a task, open Actions, and inspect the program path. Disable an entry only when its command points to the suspicious file and you understand what created it. In Services, do not stop or delete a service solely because its display name is unfamiliar; obtain the executable path and verify it first. If a task or service is managed by software you still need, uninstall that software through Settings > Apps instead of deleting system records.

Use Safe Mode when the file is locked

If a scanner cannot act because the process restarts, boot into Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and choose Safe Mode. Run the security scan there. Avoid command-line deletion of an executable whose identity has not been verified; a mistaken deletion can damage the parent application or remove useful evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I fix a “file not found” or application error after removal?

Once security software has quarantined a suspicious file, a program that expected it may display a missing-file message. The correct fix is to repair or remove the parent application, not to download a replacement executable from an untrusted site.

  1. Identify the caller. Read the error title and command path. Check Task Manager, Startup apps and Event Viewer’s Windows Logs > Application entries around the time of the popup.
  2. Uninstall unwanted software. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove a program you do not recognize or no longer need. Reboot and scan again.
  3. Repair a known application. For software you trust, use its built-in repair option or reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. A clean reinstall restores legitimate files without trusting the quarantined executable.
  4. Repair Windows components only if the error implicates Windows. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    When it completes, run:
    sfc /scannow
These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not prove that a third-party executable is safe.
  5. Restart and verify. Confirm that the popup is gone, the parent application opens, and a follow-up scan is clean. If the message returns, recheck scheduled tasks and startup paths instead of restoring the deleted file.

Should I delete every file named fake_cmnd.exe?

No. Delete or quarantine a specific file only after checking its path, hash, provenance and scan result. A name-only rule can break unrelated software and cannot establish that the file is the sample in the report.

  • Quarantine or remove promptly: an unexpected file whose MD5 exactly matches the reported hash, especially when a security scanner flags it.
  • Investigate before acting: a file with a different hash, a trusted-looking path, or a valid signature that belongs to software you installed.
  • Escalate: a machine that repeatedly recreates the file, shows account misuse, disables security tools, or cannot complete an offline scan.

What if the file came from a game, mod or archive?

Video-game downloads are a common context for unfamiliar executables, but that context does not establish safety. Verify the publisher and checksum supplied by the game developer or mod author, inspect the archive contents before extraction, and avoid “crack,” “keygen” or repacked installers. If the executable appeared inside a messaging attachment or an archive you did not expect, preserve the archive for the scanner and do not launch it to test the game.

How can I prevent the error from returning?

  • Keep Windows and your security software updated, and leave real-time protection enabled.
  • Download games, mods and utilities from sources you can verify; scan archives before opening them.
  • Maintain offline or versioned backups so you can recover without restoring an unknown executable.
  • Review Startup apps and scheduled tasks after removing an unwanted program.
  • Record the exact path and hash whenever a security alert appears; this avoids deleting a legitimate same-named file later.

As an optional shortcut after you have checked the file and run your security scans, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a different MD5 hash still mean fake_cmnd.exe is dangerous?

Yes. A different hash only means the file is not the exact binary described in that report; it does not certify the replacement as safe. Use its own scan results, signature, path and origin to decide what to do.

Why does Windows keep showing the error after my antivirus quarantines the file?

A startup shortcut, scheduled task or service may still call the old path. Disable the verified reference, then repair or uninstall the parent application instead of downloading a replacement executable.

Is the reported Ransom.Skeeyah result a current Windows diagnosis?

No current status is established by the available record. It is a dated report for one sample analyzed on June 7, 2024, so your security product’s present scan and the file’s exact hash matter.

What should I do if I cannot access Windows normally?

Use Windows Recovery Environment to run Safe Mode or Microsoft Defender Offline scan. If the computer shows broader signs of compromise or the file returns, disconnect it and seek help from a qualified administrator or incident-response professional.
