FalloutNVLauncher.exe is the normal launcher executable installed with Fallout: New Vegas. It should be inside the game’s own installation directory, such as C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonFallout New Vegas for Steam or the FalloutNewVegas folder used by Epic. A copy in that expected folder, with a valid digital signature and a clean antivirus result, is consistent with the genuine launcher. A filename alone is not proof of safety, however. Check the path first
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Fallout: New Vegas, choose Manage and Browse local files.
- In Epic Games Launcher, open your Library, select the game’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, and use the folder icon or installation-location option.
- Locate
FalloutNVLauncher.exe. The path should end in the game’s Fallout New Vegas directory, not a user-downloads, temporary or system directory.
Check the signature and local security result
- Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Review the signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.

Which driver and graphics conflicts can stop the launcher?
Out-of-date graphics drivers and a known AMD Vulkan component can cause startup failure or an immediate crash. Install the current driver offered by your GPU manufacturer before changing game files.

- Install a current AMD or NVIDIA driver for the installed graphics card, then restart Windows.
- For AMD Radeon RX systems, Bethesda notes that rolling back from Adrenalin Edition 24.4.1 may be necessary when that release is involved in the failure. Use the driver version appropriate to your card and Windows edition; do not assume every RX system requires a rollback.
The amdvlk64.dll conflict
Bethesda specifically calls out amdvlk64.dll in DxDiag as a possible AMD conflict. Press Win+R, type dxdiag, save the report, and check whether that module appears in the graphics or problem-information sections. If it does, update or roll back the AMD driver as appropriate rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an unverified site.
Select the correct GPU
On a laptop or desktop with integrated and discrete graphics, assign Fallout: New Vegas to the high-performance GPU in Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics (or in the GPU manufacturer’s control panel). Apply the setting to the game’s executable, then relaunch from the storefront.

What background software or hardware should I disconnect?
Launch interference can come from a controller, antivirus action, overlays, the selected GPU or Windows gaming features. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which condition matters.
- Controllers: unplug USB controllers and disconnect Bluetooth gamepads, then test the launcher with only the keyboard and mouse attached.
- Antivirus: inspect quarantine and blocked-app history. If the file is confirmed to be the genuine executable in the official game path, add that game folder to the product’s exclusion list only when necessary and only according to your security software’s guidance. How do I troubleshoot a modded Fallout: New Vegas installation?
First establish whether the unmodded game launches. A mod can change the executable path, add DLLs, or load scripts before the normal launcher completes, so troubleshooting a modded installation requires isolating those additions.
Verify the xNVSE location
The xNVSE documentation describes New Vegas Script Extender as a modder’s resource that expands Fallout: New Vegas scripting. Its files belong in the Fallout New Vegas root directory—the same folder as FalloutNV.exe—not in the Data folder.
Use an isolation pass
- Disable other mods and any custom loader, leaving only the files required by xNVSE if your setup depends on it.
- Launch the game and record whether the failure changes from a no-op to a crash, or disappears entirely.

When should I reinstall Fallout: New Vegas?
