fbservice.exe (also displayed as FBService.exe) is normally the Lenovo RapidBoot HDD Accelerator service, registered in Windows as FastbootService. It is third-party Lenovo software, not a core Windows process. A copy inside a Lenovo RapidBoot, OneKey Optimizer, LenovoPortal FastBoot, or related Lenovo program folder is consistent with a legitimate installation. A copy in a random, temporary, or Windows system directory should be treated as untrusted until you verify its publisher and scan it.
The safest repair is to identify the Lenovo program that installed the service, uninstall that parent package if you no longer need it, then repair Windows components with DISM followed by System File Checker. Do not download a replacement executable from a pop-up or an unofficial DLL/EXE site, and do not delete the file first without checking whether it is malicious.

What does fbservice.exe do?
RapidBoot was Lenovo’s boot-optimization utility. Its HDD Accelerator component runs a background service, so fbservice.exe can appear in Task Manager without opening a visible window. The process is associated with Lenovo software rather than with Windows itself.
The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine. Malware can use the same name, and an old Lenovo installation can be damaged or incomplete. Use the file location, digital signature, installed parent program, behavior, and security-scan result together.

RapidBoot is designed to start as a service rather than as a normal desktop application. That explains why you may see the process immediately after sign-in, while no RapidBoot window appears. It also explains why an error can show during startup even when you did not intentionally launch anything. The service may be present on an older Lenovo computer because it was bundled with the factory image or installed with a Lenovo optimization package.
Seeing the process once is not, by itself, evidence of excessive resource use or infection. Record whether it repeatedly restarts, consumes unusual CPU or disk time, or crashes at a predictable point. Those observations help distinguish a damaged legacy utility from a suspicious replacement file.
Is fbservice.exe safe?
It is generally legitimate when all of the following are true: the file is in a Lenovo RapidBoot or related Lenovo folder, its publisher is Lenovo and its signature validates, the corresponding Lenovo application is installed, and a reputable security scan is clean. These checks support legitimacy but do not replace malware scanning.
Compare a normal installation with a suspicious copy
| Check | Consistent with Lenovo software | Needs investigation |
|---|---|---|
| File path | C:Program FilesLenovoRapidBoot HDD Accelerator, C:Program Files (x86)LenovoRapidBoot HDD Accelerator, C:Program FilesLenovoOneKey Optimizerbin, or C:Program Files (x86)LenovoLenovoPortalFastBoot |
A temporary folder, a user-downloads folder, a random directory, or a Windows system folder unrelated to Lenovo |
| Publisher and signature | Lenovo is shown as publisher and the digital signature validates | Publisher is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer does not match the Lenovo installation |
| Parent software | RapidBoot HDD Accelerator, Lenovo Accelerator Application, OneKey Optimizer, or another matching Lenovo package is installed | No Lenovo program explains the file |
| Behavior | Background service activity that matches the Lenovo utility | Repeated crashes, unexplained CPU or disk use, or attempts to start from an unrelated location |
| Security result | No detection after current security intelligence is applied | Microsoft Defender or another reputable scanner reports a threat |
There is no authoritative, published safety percentage or prevalence figure for this filename. Treat online “danger ratings” as opinions, not measured malware probabilities. A valid signature is useful evidence about the signer, but a signed file can still be outdated or abused, so keep the scan step in the process.
Check the full path in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find fbservice.exe or FBService.exe on the Processes or Details tab.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, or open Properties and record the full path.
- In the file’s Properties, inspect the Digital Signatures tab and the listed publisher.
Write down the complete folder, not just the filename. Similar-looking names in a Windows directory, a temporary directory, or a user-download folder should not be treated as Lenovo files merely because the spelling matches. If more than one copy exists, check each path separately and scan the one that does not belong to an installed Lenovo product.
A Lenovo path and valid signature make a legitimate installation more likely, but continue with a scan if the process behaves abnormally or Windows reports an error. Update Defender’s security intelligence before scanning so an old definition set does not produce false reassurance.
Why does fbservice.exe keep crashing or showing an error?
Most cases fall into one of five categories:
- Damaged Lenovo installation: an update, interrupted uninstall, or disk problem left the service files inconsistent.
- Conflict with a legacy utility: RapidBoot was designed for older Lenovo systems and may not behave well after Windows or hardware changes.
- Windows component corruption: damaged protected system files can cause services and their dependencies to fail.
- Unwanted or substituted executable: a file copied from an unofficial download, a support scam, or a compromised location may only be pretending to be Lenovo software.
- Unsupported operating-system context: Lenovo’s published RapidBoot uninstall package targets Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 ThinkCentre systems. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so legacy utilities on that release no longer receive the same ongoing security coverage as a supported Windows edition.
A crash by itself does not establish that the file is malware. First establish where the executable came from and which program owns it.

The timing of the failure is useful. A message immediately after boot suggests a service registration or startup dependency. A crash only when a Lenovo optimization screen opens points more directly to the parent application. A warning from Defender, especially for a file outside the Lenovo folders, changes the priority from application repair to containment and malware scanning.
How do I find the program that installed fbservice.exe?
Remove or repair the parent Lenovo package instead of deleting the executable manually.
- On Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On older Windows releases, open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Search for RapidBoot HDD Accelerator, Lenovo Accelerator Application, OneKey Optimizer, or a Lenovo package whose installation folder matches the file path.
- Note the exact product name and version before changing anything. If more than one Lenovo utility is present, identify the package whose folder contains
fbservice.exe. - Create a restore point or confirm that you have a current backup before removing older system software.
Check the installed program’s location or support information against the path you recorded. A matching folder and matching product name provide stronger evidence than a generic Lenovo label elsewhere in the Apps list. If no installed application accounts for the file, do not “repair” it by downloading a same-named executable. Move to the security-scan procedure below.

Uninstalling the parent application is safer than deleting fbservice.exe by hand. Manual deletion can leave a broken service registration, startup errors, or other RapidBoot files behind. It can also destroy evidence needed to determine whether an untrusted copy was present.
Use Windows’ normal uninstall path
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features).
- Select RapidBoot HDD Accelerator, Lenovo Accelerator Application, or the matching Lenovo package and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the vendor uninstaller, restart Windows when prompted, and check Task Manager again.
- After restarting, confirm that the service and its startup entry are gone. Do not remove unrelated Lenovo hotkey, recovery, or hardware-driver packages unless you have identified them separately.
Keep the computer connected to power during the uninstall and restart, particularly on an older laptop. If the uninstaller asks to reboot, complete that reboot before judging whether the process has been removed. A service that is still listed immediately before restart may disappear only after Windows reloads its service database.
Use Lenovo’s legacy RapidBoot removal package when it applies
Lenovo published an uninstall package for RapidBoot HDD Accelerator on ThinkCentre systems running Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Lenovo lists Windows crashes with STOP code 0x00000024, NTFS error 55, CHKDSK running at startup, and repeated Windows System Recovery Console loops among the symptoms addressed by that package. The package was published in 2014 and lists a 2022 modification date, so verify that your ThinkCentre model and Windows edition match before using it.
Obtain removal software only from Lenovo’s official support pages for the exact product and operating system. If the package does not match your model or edition, use the normal Installed apps or Programs and Features route instead. Do not assume that a package made for a ThinkCentre applies to every Lenovo notebook or desktop.

What if the uninstaller fails?
- Restart Windows and try the uninstall again before attempting file deletion.
- Temporarily close other installers, backup utilities, and system-tuning programs that may be holding the file open.
- If Windows still reports a missing or corrupt component, repair Windows with DISM and SFC before attempting another removal.
- Do not force-delete the executable from its folder while the service is registered.
If the uninstaller reports that the product is already missing, capture the exact message and recheck the path. That situation can indicate a partial uninstall, not a reason to download a replacement EXE.
How do I check a suspicious fbservice.exe for malware?
If the path is outside a Lenovo program folder, the publisher is absent, or a security product raises an alert, do not trust the filename.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and apply the latest security intelligence.
- Run a Full scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- If the alert or suspicious behavior persists, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, which can detect threats that resist a normal session.
- Quarantine detections rather than restoring them simply because the filename looks familiar. A scan-and-quarantine workflow is also available in Malwarebytes’ threat-scanning product.
- Restart and scan again if requested. If you entered passwords while the suspicious process was active, change those passwords from a known-clean device after cleanup.
If the file arrived through a pop-up, an unsolicited “support” call, or an unofficial download site, treat that origin as a major warning sign. Official support pages are the safe source for Lenovo utilities; a random copy of fbservice.exe is not a substitute for the original installer.
Do not launch the suspicious file to “see what it does,” and do not submit confidential files to an unknown online scanner. Preserve the path and alert details for your security software or administrator, then let the scanner quarantine the detection. If credentials, payment details, or work accounts were used while the machine was compromised, change them after cleanup from a clean device.

When the Lenovo package has been removed or verified and Windows still reports component errors, use Microsoft’s repair order: DISM first, then SFC.
- Save your work, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to reach completion:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows after both commands finish. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the system again before reinstalling any Lenovo utility.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. Microsoft describes SFC as scanning protected system files and replacing corrupted files with cached copies. These commands repair Windows components; they do not validate an untrusted copy of fbservice.exe, so complete the security checks separately.
Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is still running, even if the percentage appears to pause. The commands require administrator rights and may take substantially longer on an older hard drive. If the result says no integrity violations were found, that does not prove the Lenovo executable is authentic; it only describes protected Windows files.

Can I disable Lenovo RapidBoot instead of uninstalling it?
Yes, disabling the associated service can be a temporary diagnostic step, but it is not the same as removing the program and may leave startup references behind.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Press Windows key+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Look for FastbootService or a clearly matching RapidBoot service. Confirm its executable path before changing it.
- Record the current Startup type, choose Stop for a short test, and set startup to Disabled only if you have decided not to use RapidBoot.
- Restart and check whether the crash or disk activity changes. If it does, uninstall the parent Lenovo package rather than leaving a disabled, obsolete service registered.
Do not disable an unfamiliar service solely because its name resembles fbservice.exe. Verify the path and publisher first. If disabling the service has no effect, restore its previous startup setting until you identify the actual source of the error.
What should I do if errors continue after removal and repair?
Recheck the exact executable path and the event that triggers the error. A message at startup points toward a leftover service or startup entry; a crash only when a Lenovo utility opens points toward that application; a detection in a non-Lenovo folder remains a security incident even after Windows components are repaired.
- Confirm that the parent Lenovo program is no longer listed in Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Run another full security scan after rebooting.
- Check that DISM completed before SFC and that both commands were run from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Do not replace the file from a download site or copy it from another computer.
- For older ThinkCentre systems, use Lenovo’s model-specific support documentation and the matching RapidBoot removal package rather than a generic installer.
Keep the exact error text, event time, file path, Windows edition, and Lenovo model together when contacting support. Those details are more useful than reporting only that “fbservice.exe is broken.” If the error disappears after uninstalling RapidBoot, leave the utility removed unless Lenovo specifically provides a compatible replacement for your model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the Windows version change the decision?
It can. Lenovo’s cited RapidBoot removal package is specifically for older ThinkCentre systems on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; if you continue using Windows 10 in 2026, account for the lack of ongoing free security fixes when deciding whether to retain a legacy boot utility. Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 may still run other Lenovo components, but compatibility is model- and package-specific rather than guaranteed by the filename.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download fbservice.exe by itself to replace a missing file?
No. A standalone copy from a download site cannot prove that it belongs to your Lenovo model or that it is clean. Reinstall or remove the parent Lenovo package from an official support source, and scan the system before restoring anything.

Why is fbservice.exe running even though I never opened RapidBoot?
RapidBoot installs a background service, so Windows can start it with no visible application window. Task Manager may therefore show the process during normal startup or maintenance activity.
Recommended Free Tools
Will deleting fbservice.exe stop the error permanently?
Usually not. Deleting only the executable can leave FastbootService registrations and other Lenovo files behind, producing new startup errors; uninstall the owning package instead.
Is RapidBoot still appropriate on a Windows 10 PC in 2026?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and the published RapidBoot removal package targets older ThinkCentre releases. Check your exact Lenovo model and consider the security implications of retaining legacy software on an unsupported operating system.
What file path should fbservice.exe normally use?
Known Lenovo locations include the RapidBoot HDD Accelerator folders under Program Files or Program Files (x86), the OneKey Optimizer bin folder, and the LenovoPortal FastBoot folder. A temporary, download, random, or unrelated Windows folder requires verification and a malware scan.
Does a Lenovo digital signature guarantee that fbservice.exe is safe?
No. A valid Lenovo signature supports the file’s origin, but it does not replace current antivirus scanning or explain an unexpected path. Check the signature, parent program, behavior, and scan result together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What does Lenovo’s RapidBoot uninstall package fix?
Lenovo’s package is for certain ThinkCentre systems on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Lenovo lists STOP code 0x00000024, NTFS error 55, CHKDSK at startup, and repeated Windows System Recovery Console loops among the addressed symptoms. Verify the model and Windows edition before using it.
Should I run SFC before DISM for an fbservice.exe error?
Microsoft’s order is DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the component store that SFC relies on; then SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces corrupted cached copies.
Can Malwarebytes replace Microsoft Defender for this problem?
Use a reputable scanner and quarantine detections. Malwarebytes documents a scan-and-quarantine workflow, while Microsoft Defender provides Full and Offline scans; neither should be treated as a reason to skip path and publisher checks.
The Bottom Line
fbservice.exe is usually Lenovo RapidBoot’s FastbootService, not a Windows core process. Verify its full path, publisher, parent Lenovo program, behavior, and scan result. Uninstall RapidBoot rather than deleting the EXE, use Lenovo’s model-specific removal package only when applicable, and run DISM before SFC for remaining Windows corruption. A copy outside Lenovo folders or flagged by security software should be quarantined and investigated as a possible threat.
