firedaemon.exe is normally the Windows service executable installed by FireDaemon Pro or Pro OEM, software that runs applications, scripts, or programs as Windows services. It is not a core Windows file, so its safety depends on where the file came from, where it is stored, whether its Authenticode signature is valid, and what it is doing. A copy in the expected FireDaemon installation directory with a valid signature from FireDaemon Technologies Limited is usually legitimate. A copy in an unrelated folder, an invalid or missing signature, or unexplained security detections requires separate malware investigation. The safest troubleshooting order is to verify provenance, inspect Event Viewer, then address certificate, endpoint-protection, configuration, or service-timeout problems without deleting the executable prematurely.

What does firedaemon.exe do?

FireDaemon Pro is commercial Windows software for running an application, program, or script interactively as a Windows service in Session 0. The product’s current documentation describes this as creating and running almost any application, program, or script as a service. The executable that performs this service role is generally named FireDaemon.exe; Windows and file browsers may display it as firedaemon.exe in lowercase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FireDaemon Pro OEM installations also record the service executable in product configuration. The OEM guide identifies FireDaemon.exe as the service executable and stores ServiceExe=FireDaemon.exe in the FireDaemon product registry configuration. FireDaemonCLI.exe is a separate command-line utility used to configure and control services; it is not the same file.

FireDaemon’s release listing identifies Pro 6.4.3 as a 64-bit (x64) product for Microsoft Windows on Intel and AMD processors, listed in October 2026 with a 30-day trial. That version detail applies to the release listing at that date, not to every older installation or OEM build.

Why is firedaemon.exe running on my PC?

It is usually running because an administrator installed FireDaemon Pro or an OEM package and configured one or more applications to start as Windows services. A service can start at boot or when its configured trigger occurs, so you may see FireDaemon.exe in Task Manager even when you did not manually launch it.

  • Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab, and locate FireDaemon.exe.
  • Right-click it and choose Open file location. The directory is more informative than the filename alone.
  • In the Services tab, identify the related service and note whether it is running, stopped, or repeatedly starting and stopping.
  • Do not end the process simply because it is unfamiliar. Stopping it can also stop the application that FireDaemon is hosting.

If no one in your organization installed FireDaemon, treat the discovery as an investigation point. Record the full path, publisher, creation time, parent process, and security-product alert before making changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is firedaemon.exe safe or a virus?

The name alone cannot establish safety. A legitimate copy normally resides under a FireDaemon installation directory such as C:Program FilesFireDaemon Pro or a documented OEM product directory and carries a valid digital signature. A file with the same name in a temporary, user-profile, downloads, or randomly named directory deserves additional scrutiny.

Check the location first

In File Explorer, right-click the process or file, choose Open file location, then right-click the executable and select Properties. The General tab shows the path. Compare it with the location used by your organization’s FireDaemon deployment documentation or installer record.

Check the Authenticode signature

On the file’s Digital Signatures tab, inspect the signer and signature status. You can also run PowerShell as a standard user with this command (replace the path if necessary):

Get-AuthenticodeSignature 'C:Program FilesFireDaemon ProFireDaemon.exe'

A legitimate installation should report a valid signature from FireDaemon Technologies Limited through the Sectigo trust chain. FireDaemon says its installers and executables use 4096-bit SHA-2, hardware-based Sectigo Authenticode certificates. A result of NotSigned, UnknownError, an invalid signature, or an unrelated signer is not proof of malware, but it is a reason to quarantine the file for independent scanning and obtain a clean copy from the official vendor or the organization that installed it.

Understand the historical naming collision

Microsoft’s historical GhostRadmin entry used “Win32/FireDaemon” as an alias and noted that later Defender definitions no longer detected that program as unwanted under current guidelines. That historical entry is a naming collision, not a certificate for every file called firedaemon.exe. Use the path, signature, behavior, and current security-product evidence together.

What should I do before replacing or deleting firedaemon.exe?

Preserve evidence and identify the owning service first. Replacing or deleting a service executable can leave a configured service unable to start and can make an OEM installation disappear from the FireDaemon interface if its configuration no longer matches.

  1. Write down the full executable path and the service name shown in Services.
  2. Export or photograph the relevant service properties, including Path to executable, startup type, account, and dependencies.
  3. Record the signer and signature status from PowerShell or Properties > Digital Signatures.
  4. Review your endpoint-protection alert and policy log. Note the detection name, action taken, and timestamp.
  5. Create a restore point or an approved backup before changing registry values, service configuration, or security policy.

How do I diagnose a firedaemon.exe error?

Use Event Viewer to determine which class of failure you have. The same filename can appear in certificate, security-policy, path, dependency, application, and Service Control Manager errors, and each requires a different remedy.

  1. Press Win+R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Open Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application.
  3. Filter or sort around the exact time of the failure.
  4. Look for the service name, executable path, signer or certificate messages, application-crash details, and Service Control Manager event IDs.
  5. Save the event’s General and Details information before clearing logs or retrying repeatedly.

FireDaemon’s timeout guidance describes the diagnostic wording for a service that does not respond to the Service Control Manager in time. If Event Viewer shows a timeout, follow the timeout-specific section below; do not change the registry for an unrelated application error.

How do I fix certificate or “Unknown Publisher” errors?

Certificate-chain problems can make SmartScreen display “cannot validate” or “Unknown Publisher,” cause slow startup, make the graphical interface exit immediately, or make the command-line utility return exit code 1. These symptoms can occur when required Sectigo root or intermediate certificates are missing or cannot be validated.

  1. Confirm that the file is the expected FireDaemon executable and that its signature details identify FireDaemon Technologies Limited.
  2. Check the computer’s date, time, and time zone. An incorrect clock can invalidate an otherwise current certificate.
  3. Install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update (or your organization’s managed update process), then restart.
  4. Ask your administrator whether the required Sectigo root and intermediate certificates are present in the organization’s trusted certificate stores. Install certificates only through an approved policy or the vendor’s documented process.
  5. Run the signature command again and retry the installer, GUI, or service.

Do not “fix” an unknown publisher warning by disabling SmartScreen or accepting an invalid signature globally. A local certificate exception can weaken protection for unrelated software and can conceal a tampered file.

How do I fix endpoint-protection blocking?

FireDaemon’s OEM deployment checklist instructs administrators to configure endpoint protection to allow-list the FireDaemon installation directory and executables when policy requires it. An allow-list is appropriate only after you have verified the path, signer, and deployment source.

  1. Open the security product’s protection or quarantine history and identify the exact file and detection.
  2. Compare the detected path with the approved FireDaemon installation directory.
  3. Have an administrator submit the file to the organization’s analysis process or obtain a clean installer from the official vendor.
  4. If the file is confirmed legitimate, create the narrowest policy exception possible: prefer the verified directory or exact signed file over a broad rule for every executable named firedaemon.exe.
  5. Restore or reinstall the file only after the policy is in place, then retest and review new alerts.

Never create an exception merely because a service fails to start. An unrelated copy, a modified binary, or a compromised installation should remain blocked until independently cleared.

How do I fix a FireDaemon service that times out?

Windows Service Control Manager’s documented default startup timeout is 30,000 milliseconds (30 seconds). Change the timeout only when Event Viewer identifies a Service Control Manager timeout and the hosted application legitimately needs more time to initialize.

  1. Confirm the timeout event in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and record the service name.
  2. Check the service’s dependencies, account permissions, network requirements, and application logs. A missing dependency or a hung application should be fixed before extending a global timeout.
  3. Back up the registry or create an approved restore point.
  4. Open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl" -Name ServicesPipeTimeout -Value 180000 -Type DWord
  1. Restart Windows so the machine-wide setting takes effect.
  2. Start the service and inspect Event Viewer and the hosted application’s log.
  3. If the timeout continues, investigate the application, dependencies, and account rather than repeatedly increasing the value.

The example value of 180,000 milliseconds is FireDaemon’s documented example, not a universal recommendation. This registry change affects service startup behavior for the computer, so apply it under change control and return it to the previous value when the underlying startup problem is resolved.

What if firedaemon.exe was renamed or moved?

FireDaemon configuration must agree with the actual executable name and location. In OEM deployments, the ServiceExe value identifies the service executable. Renaming FireDaemon.exe without updating that value can cause existing services to disappear from the FireDaemon GUI even though they remain listed in the Windows services console.

  1. Compare the service’s Path to executable with the file on disk.
  2. Check the OEM configuration for ServiceExe and note whether it still says FireDaemon.exe.
  3. Restore the original filename and approved installation directory when possible.
  4. If a controlled deployment requires a different name, update the documented FireDaemon configuration and service registration so all references match.
  5. Restart the FireDaemon interface and confirm that the services appear in both the GUI and services.msc.

Do not rename a signed executable as a workaround for an alert. Renaming can break configuration while doing nothing to resolve the security finding.

How can I control the service safely from the command line?

FireDaemonCLI is the separate command-line tool for service configuration and control. It supports status, start, stop, restart, and related operations. Commands that change privileged service settings require an elevated account.

  1. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or another approved elevated shell.
  2. Use the FireDaemonCLI installation path supplied by your deployment rather than running an identically named tool from an untrusted directory.
  3. Query the service status before taking action.
  4. Use stop, start, or restart only when you understand the hosted application’s impact and have a maintenance window.
  5. Recheck Event Viewer and the service status after the operation.

The exact command syntax can vary by FireDaemon release and deployment. Use the CLI help output and the product documentation that matches your installed version; do not paste commands intended for a different release into production systems.

Can I delete firedaemon.exe?

Do not delete it while a FireDaemon service is installed or while you are still determining whether the file is legitimate. Removing the executable can strand services, break an OEM management interface, and destroy evidence needed to assess a detection.

If you no longer need FireDaemon, first identify every service that depends on it, stop those services during a maintenance window, and uninstall the product through the organization’s approved software-removal process. After uninstalling, verify in services.msc, Task Manager, and the installation directory that no required service remains. If security evidence suggests the file is malicious, quarantine it with your endpoint-security product and follow your incident-response process instead of manually deleting it.

Which recovery path fits my error?

Observed problem First action Why this path fits Risk or scope
Unexpected directory or invalid signature Quarantine for independent scanning; obtain a clean vendor copy Provenance is uncertain Security investigation; do not allow-list first
SmartScreen “Unknown Publisher,” installer validation failure, GUI exits, or CLI exit code 1 Verify the signer, patch Windows, and address missing Sectigo chain certificates Certificate trust is the likely fault class Certificate-store changes should follow organizational policy
Endpoint product blocks a verified installation Review detection and policy logs, then use a narrow allow-list exception if approved Security policy may be preventing execution Changes security enforcement; apply only to verified files
Service Control Manager timeout in Event Viewer Fix dependencies first; if the event is confirmed, consider ServicesPipeTimeout The documented default is 30,000 milliseconds Registry value is machine-wide and requires a reboot
Services missing from the FireDaemon GUI after a rename Restore the filename or align ServiceExe and service registration Configuration no longer matches the executable Incorrect edits can affect multiple services

What Windows and architecture details matter?

FireDaemon Pro 6.4.3 was listed in October 2026 as a 64-bit product for Intel and AMD Windows systems. Older Pro, Pro OEM, and organization-specific builds may have different version and architecture requirements. Before replacing an executable, confirm the installed product version, whether the host is 64-bit, and whether the installer came from the vendor or an authorized organizational deployment.

Do not infer compatibility from the filename. A 32-bit or older application hosted by FireDaemon can have its own requirements even when the FireDaemon service executable is 64-bit. Check the hosted application’s documentation and the service’s dependency list when startup fails after an upgrade.

What information should I give an administrator or support technician?

  • The exact Windows edition and build, plus whether the machine is Intel or AMD and 64-bit.
  • Installed FireDaemon product and version, including whether it is Pro or Pro OEM.
  • Full path, file size, modification date, and Authenticode signer for FireDaemon.exe.
  • The service name, startup type, account, dependencies, and Path to executable.
  • Event Viewer entries from the same minute as the failure.
  • Endpoint-security detection name, action, and policy state.
  • Whether the failure began after a Windows update, certificate change, rename, reinstall, or policy update.

This information separates a trust problem from a service configuration problem and prevents unnecessary registry or security-policy changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check whether a FireDaemon service starts at boot?

Open services.msc, locate the service associated with FireDaemon, and inspect its Startup type and Triggers tabs. A service can be configured for automatic, delayed, manual, or trigger-based startup, so Task Manager showing the process does not by itself indicate persistence outside the normal service configuration.

Can I verify the file without opening its graphical properties?

Yes. PowerShell’s Get-AuthenticodeSignature reports the signer and signature status directly, which is useful on managed systems or when the shell is being used for a repeatable check. Save the output with the file path and timestamp so an administrator can compare it with the approved deployment record.

Why did a Windows update appear to cause a FireDaemon failure?

An update can coincide with a changed certificate store, endpoint-security policy, dependency, or service startup timing without being the direct cause. Compare the first failing Event Viewer entry with update and security-policy timestamps before rolling back Windows or changing the service timeout.

What is the difference between FireDaemon.exe and FireDaemonCLI.exe?

FireDaemon.exe is the service executable normally installed with FireDaemon Pro or Pro OEM. FireDaemonCLI.exe is a separate command-line utility for configuring and controlling services, so an alert or missing file involving one should not automatically be treated as evidence about the other.
