How does the FMA3 test work, and why can it say “unsupported”?
FMA3 is a CPU instruction-set capability. The test attempts to use the processor’s FMA3 implementation and reports whether the feature can be exercised. A report that FMA3 is unsupported can be a legitimate hardware or runtime result rather than evidence of malware.
Microsoft explains that, on x64 platforms, the C runtime startup code detects whether the CPU supports FMA3 instructions and enables or disables the corresponding implementations. If the CPU lacks FMA3, those implementations cannot be enabled; the relevant APIs are available only in x64 versions of the runtime. Consequently, a 32-bit environment, an older processor, or a tool build that does not match the system can produce an unsupported result.

Intel’s manual for a particular release lists Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 as supported for the FMA3 test. That list is tied to that release and predates Windows 11, so treat it as historical compatibility information. Verify the exact diagnostic-tool build, Windows architecture and CPU model instead of assuming that every current Windows 11 installation is covered.
Is fma3.exe safe?
There is no filename-only safety verdict. A copy installed by Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool in that tool’s own directory is more credible than one that appeared in Downloads, Temp, AppData or another user-writable folder. Even a familiar name can be copied by unrelated software, so investigate the individual file.
Check the path and origin
- Open Task Manager while the process is present, right-click

Why is fma3.exe missing a DLL?

1. Reinstall the complete diagnostic tool for a missing-DLL error
- Close Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool and any test it launched.
- Do not download

A stand-alone file can be tampered with or belong to another release. - Use the official Intel distribution for the same diagnostic-tool product and install it again, or use Windows’ installed-app repair option if that build provides one. Deleting only the executable can leave broken shortcuts, scheduled tasks or an incomplete installation. If the file is in an unexpected directory or has an unexplained signer, quarantine and scan it first; manual deletion can destroy evidence and does not address persistence elsewhere.
