foundry.exe is not a unique Windows system file. The name can refer to the Context Foundry command-line binary, a file associated with Foundry Virtual Tabletop, or a separate Foundry OSD deployment tool. A filename alone cannot tell you whether a copy is safe. Identify its full path, publisher, digital signature and download source first; then repair the specific program rather than replacing an unknown executable.

Is foundry.exe safe?
It can be safe when it belongs to a product you intentionally installed from an official source, but the name itself is not evidence of safety. Treat an unexplained copy as untrusted until provenance and integrity checks agree.
Check the location and download source
In Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. In File Explorer, note the full path, file size and creation date. A Context Foundry installation should be consistent with the Cargo binary directory; a Foundry Virtual Tabletop installation should trace back to the licensed vendor download; and a Foundry OSD copy should match an official release asset. A file that appeared in %TEMP%, a Downloads subfolder you do not recognize, a crack archive or a peer-to-peer package deserves extra scrutiny.

Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures and select the signature’s Details. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is the project or publisher you expected. An absent or invalid signature does not automatically prove malware, because some open-source builds are unsigned, but it means you must rely on a trusted source and a published hash instead of assuming the file is genuine.
Compare a published hash
Only compare a hash when the project publishes one for the exact release and installer. In PowerShell, run:
Get-FileHash "C:pathtofoundry.exe" -Algorithm SHA256Compare the resulting value character-for-character with the release’s SHA-256 value. A mismatch means the file is different from the release you intended to install; download a fresh copy from the official source rather than trying to repair that file.
Understand a documented Foundry VTT warning
Foundry Virtual Tabletop’s Version 14.365 release notes, dated July 15, 2026, describe a temporary reputation warning caused by a certificate migration. The notes say that, in that specific official release context, it is safe to click Run Anyway because the warning is expected during the certificate change. That statement does not apply to an unrelated foundry.exe, an unverified download or a warning with a different publisher or path.

- Wrong or damaged build: an incomplete update, mismatched release asset or corrupted executable can prevent launch.
- Configuration or user-data damage: a broken module, invalid setting or damaged world can make the application appear to crash even when the executable is intact.
- Graphics and asset problems: hardware acceleration, invalid asset paths or a scene resource that cannot load can produce a gray screen or a failed world.
- Insufficient disk space: Foundry’s Windows troubleshooting guidance calls out less than 4 GB free on the Windows boot drive as a possible cause of loading failures.
- Windows component corruption: damaged system files can affect launchers, runtime components or file dialogs.
- Security detection: Defender or another scanner may block a file because its reputation, signature or behavior is not trusted.
- Network configuration: firewall and port-forwarding mistakes matter when hosting for remote players, not when an unknown executable simply refuses to start.
What should I do before repairing foundry.exe?
Preserve evidence and protect your game data before deleting, replacing or reinstalling anything.
- Record the failure. Write down the complete path, exact error wording, file size, publisher shown in Properties, signature status and download source. Capture a screenshot of the warning if Windows displays one.
- Close the process. Exit Foundry and end any remaining process in Task Manager. Do not repeatedly launch a file that a scanner has identified as suspicious.
- Back up user data. Copy your worlds, modules, configuration and logs to an offline location. Portable Foundry builds use
Config,DataandLogsfolders; installations with a custom user-data location should be backed up from that location instead. - Keep a suspicious sample available for analysis. If malware is suspected, do not open or rename the file. Let your security product quarantine it, or preserve it in quarantine so a trusted technician can examine the evidence.
How do I fix foundry.exe errors manually?
Work through these steps in order. Stop when the problem is resolved; do not replace a questionable executable with another copy from an unofficial mirror.
1. Install a clean official build
For Foundry Virtual Tabletop, sign in to the licensed vendor account, download the recommended Windows version and install it over or beside the existing installation according to the vendor’s instructions. For Context Foundry, use the project’s official documentation or repository and rebuild or reinstall the CLI. For Foundry OSD, use the official GitHub release asset and verify its SHA-256 value before running it. Keep the original error details so you can compare the new file’s path and signature with the old one.

Do not delete the Data folder merely because the program will not launch. Foundry’s user-data guidance distinguishes the application from worlds, modules, configuration and logs. If a fresh installation starts but a particular world fails, test with a safe configuration or a new, empty world before restoring modules one at a time. This isolates a bad module or setting without sacrificing your existing data.
3. Use safe configuration and normal permissions
Follow Foundry’s documented safe-configuration procedure when modules or settings are suspected. Avoid running the application as Administrator: Foundry’s common-error guidance warns that elevation can create ownership and user-data problems. Use an elevated prompt only when a documented installer or a Windows permission dialog specifically requires it, and return to a normal user account afterward.
4. Read logs and console errors
If the application opens but a world, scene or asset fails, inspect the application log and the browser or application console. Look for the first error, not just the final stack trace. Messages about missing textures, invalid paths, failed network requests or WebGL and hardware-acceleration failures point to different fixes. Correct an asset path or disable the offending module rather than repeatedly reinstalling the executable.
5. Check free space and the Windows drive
Open Settings > System > Storage and confirm that the Windows boot drive has adequate free space. Foundry’s documented warning threshold is less than 4 GB free; clear enough space for temporary files, updates and world data, then retry. Do not assume that deleting arbitrary Foundry data is safe—back up first and remove only files you can identify as disposable.

6. Repair Windows components when the evidence points to corruption
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) only for this repair, then run the commands in this order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the official Foundry build again. DISM and SFC repair Windows component or system-file corruption; they cannot authenticate an unknown third-party executable and should not be treated as malware scans.
7. Handle a security detection safely
Run current Microsoft Defender protection. For a deeper check, use Windows Defender Offline or Microsoft Safety Scanner, both of which Microsoft lists as malware-removal options. If a trusted scanner identifies the file, quarantine or remove it, reinstall only from the official project source and change important passwords from a known-clean device if you suspect that the computer was compromised.
8. Configure networking only when hosting
When remote players cannot connect but the application launches locally, follow Foundry Virtual Tabletop’s firewall and port-forwarding guidance for your router and Windows network profile. Verify the listening port, firewall rule and public-versus-private network profile. These settings do not make an untrusted executable safe and are not a general remedy for a launch failure.
How do I troubleshoot the specific foundry.exe symptoms?
Windows says the file is missing
Check whether antivirus quarantine removed it and review the protection history before downloading anything. The program works locally but remote players cannot connect
This is normally a hosting configuration issue rather than an executable issue. Check the Windows firewall rule, router port forwarding and whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, then retest from an external connection. Do not expose a file from an unknown source simply to make a port test pass.
