GameScannerService.exe is generally the Razer Game Scanner component installed with Razer Synapse or older Razer Naga software. It is not a core Windows process. A legitimate copy should belong to Razer software, normally sit in a Razer folder beneath C:Program Files, and show a valid Razer digital signature. The filename alone proves nothing: an unexpected folder, missing signature, duplicate copy, or no Razer installation is a reason to investigate and scan with Microsoft Defender. Stopped-working and access-violation messages usually indicate an outdated, damaged, or conflicting Razer component, but the name cannot identify the cause by itself. This guide shows how to verify the file, stop it safely, repair or replace Synapse, and remove it completely when necessary.
What is GameScannerService.exe?
GameScannerService.exe is associated with Razer Game Scanner, a background component used by Razer Synapse and some older Razer Naga software. It helps Razer’s software manage gaming-device features; it is not required by Windows itself. Because Windows can run normally without it, a copy that appears on a computer with no Razer software deserves extra scrutiny.

Is gamescannerservice.exe safe?
It is usually safe when it was installed with Razer software, resides in a Razer directory under Program Files, carries a valid Razer signature, and passes a current Microsoft Defender scan. If any of those facts do not fit, do not approve the file merely because its spelling looks familiar.

Signs that support a legitimate copy
- Razer Synapse, Razer Naga software, or another Razer package is installed and you recognize it.
- Task Manager’s Open file location leads to a Razer folder below
C:Program Files, rather than a user profile, temporary folder, recycle-bin directory, or random download folder. - The file’s Properties window has a Digital Signatures tab whose signer is Razer and whose signature validates successfully.
- Microsoft Defender finds no threat after its security intelligence has been updated.
Warning signs
- The executable is in an unrelated directory, there are several copies in unrelated directories, or no Razer product is installed.
- The Digital Signatures tab is missing, the signer is not Razer, or Windows reports that the signature cannot be verified.
- The process repeatedly starts after you close software you do not recognize, consumes unusual resources, or appears alongside other unexplained executables.
- A web page or pop-up tells you to call a phone number to fix the error. Microsoft says, “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.”
How to verify the publisher and ownership
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager and select the Details tab. - Right-click
GameScannerService.exeand choose Open file location. Record the complete path before changing anything. - Close the folder, right-click the executable, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Razer.
- For a deeper check, Microsoft’s Sysinternals Sigcheck can display signature and version information, while Process Explorer can show the process owner and files it has open. Download these utilities only from Microsoft’s official Sysinternals distribution.
How should I scan gamescannerservice.exe for malware?
Scan before restoring, allowing, reinstalling, or deleting a suspicious copy. A familiar filename is not a reason to bypass a detection.
- Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection updates, choose Check for updates, and let the security intelligence update finish.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it. Save work first; a full scan can take a long time.
- If the path, signature, or behavior remains suspicious, return to Scan options and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Windows restarts into a separate scanning environment, so save documents and close applications before starting.
- Review Protection history. A quarantined file is blocked from running. Do not choose Allow on device unless you have independently confirmed the software and publisher are trustworthy.
If Defender identifies the executable, leave it quarantined while you determine whether the Razer installation itself is compromised. Do not download a replacement executable from a file-sharing site.

Why does GameScannerService.exe keep stopping?
Repeated crashes can come from an outdated Razer component, a damaged installation, an incomplete update, or a conflict with another program. The filename alone cannot distinguish those causes from a malicious replacement, so establish provenance before attempting a repair.
Common software causes
- Old Synapse code: Synapse 3 and its cloud services stopped receiving updates on February 3, 2026. A component built for that release may fail after a Windows or driver change.
- Corrupted files: An interrupted update, disk error, or partial uninstall can leave the service unable to load a dependency.
- Conflicting startup components: Multiple Razer utilities or security software can interfere while the service starts.
- Damaged profiles or settings: A broken configuration can cause a crash as soon as Synapse opens a device profile.
- Impostor executable: An unexpected path or invalid signature points away from an ordinary Synapse fault and toward a security investigation.
What an access-violation or stopped-working message means
Those messages describe how Windows terminated the process, not why it failed. Capture the exact wording, the file path, and when the crash occurs (at sign-in, when Synapse opens, or when a device is connected). That information helps separate a startup problem from a device-profile or installation problem.

How do I temporarily disable GameScannerService.exe?
Exiting Synapse is the safest reversible test. It stops the current application session without uninstalling Razer software.
- Find the Razer icon in the notification area near the clock. Select the hidden-icons arrow if necessary.
- Right-click the Razer Synapse icon and choose Exit Synapse. In Synapse 2, the command may be labeled Close Razer Synapse.
- Open Task Manager and confirm that the GameScannerService.exe process has ended. If it remains, wait briefly, then restart Windows rather than terminating random Razer processes.
- Use the computer normally. If the error disappears while Synapse is closed, the Razer software session is involved; if it continues, recheck the file’s path and signature.
Exiting is not a permanent removal. Synapse can start again at the next sign-in or when you launch it, and Razer device features that depend on Synapse may be unavailable while it is closed.

How do I repair Synapse 3 without reinstalling it?
The built-in repair option can replace damaged program components while leaving an existing installation in place. It applies to Synapse 3 installations, but Synapse 3 no longer receives updates or cloud services after February 3, 2026.
- Save open work and close Razer applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features (the label can vary slightly by Windows version).
- Select Razer Synapse 3, choose Modify, and select Repair.
- Allow the repair to finish, then restart Windows.
- Open Synapse and test the device that triggered the error. If the executable still crashes, do not repeat repair indefinitely; move to a clean reinstall or the current Synapse release.
How do I clean-reinstall Razer software or move to Synapse 4?
A clean reinstall is the durable software fix when repair fails, files are missing, or an old Synapse installation is unstable. Razer identifies Synapse 4 as the current replacement for Synapse 3.

- Back up profiles first. Export or otherwise record lighting, key assignments, macros, and device settings you need. A reinstall can require you to recreate them.
- Close every Razer application. Exit Synapse from the notification area and close any remaining Razer windows before uninstalling.
- Uninstall the existing package. In Settings > Apps, remove the Razer Synapse or related Razer entries shown for your installation.
- Remove only documented remnants. If Razer’s support instructions for your release identify leftover folders or components, remove those exact items. Do not use a registry cleaner or delete arbitrary folders simply because their names contain “Razer.”
- Restart Windows. This releases files that were still in use and gives you a clean starting point.
- Update Windows. Install pending Windows updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
- Install the latest Synapse release available for your devices. For a current installation, that means Synapse 4 rather than Synapse 3. Download the installer from Razer’s official support site, not from a third-party mirror.
- Restore profiles selectively. Test the default configuration first, then import settings one profile at a time. If the crash returns after one profile, that profile is a useful suspect.
If Defender detected the original executable, complete the security investigation before reinstalling. Replacing a file without resolving a compromised installation can leave the underlying problem in place.
How do I uninstall Razer Synapse 4 completely?
Use Razer’s bundled removal flow so all components selected by the installer are handled together.
- Close Synapse and other Razer applications from their windows and notification-area icons.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Razer, select the relevant Razer Synapse entry, and choose Uninstall.
- When the Razer Gaming Software window appears, choose Uninstall All and allow the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager and repeat the path and signature check if GameScannerService.exe still appears. Run another Defender scan if the executable remains or the error continues.
Full removal disables Synapse-dependent lighting, macros, remapping, and other software features until you reinstall the required Razer software. Basic keyboard or mouse input may continue, but behavior varies by device.
Which fix should I choose?
Start with the least disruptive option that answers your immediate question. If the file is suspicious, scanning takes priority over every software repair.

Can I delete gamescannerservice.exe?
Do not delete it as a first step. If it belongs to a working Razer installation, manual deletion can leave Synapse partially installed and create new errors. Exit Synapse for a temporary stop, use the Synapse repair or uninstall process for a legitimate copy, and quarantine a detected copy through Windows Security rather than bypassing Defender.
After a documented uninstall and restart, an executable that remains in an unexpected location should be rescanned. If it is unsigned, duplicated, or detected, preserve the scan details and investigate it as a possible unwanted or malicious file instead of restoring it.
What should I do if the error remains after reinstalling?
First confirm that the new executable is in the expected Razer installation directory and has a valid Razer signature. Then test Synapse with default profiles and with nonessential Razer utilities closed.
- Record the exact error text, timestamp, executable path, Windows edition, and Synapse version.
- Check whether the crash occurs only when a particular Razer device is connected or a specific profile loads.
- Run Windows Update and restart before testing again.
- Run a full Defender scan, followed by an Offline scan when the file’s provenance is still uncertain.
- If the problem is limited to an older Synapse 3 installation, use Synapse 4 where your hardware supports it.
- Contact Razer support with the recorded details if the official installer repeatedly produces the same failure.
There is no authoritative published prevalence, failure-rate, or infection-rate statistic for GameScannerService.exe. Be skeptical of pages that present a single “risk percentage” or byte-size range as if it measured all Windows installations; such figures are third-party heuristics, not a Microsoft or Razer population measurement.

It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days, and then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software, results vary, and it cannot repair every crash.
How can I prevent the problem from returning?
- Keep Windows and the current Razer release updated, rather than relying on an unsupported Synapse 3 installation for new fixes.
- Export important device profiles before major Razer or Windows changes.
- Install Razer software only from Razer’s official support distribution.
- Review the file path and digital signature after a fresh installation or a sudden change in behavior.
- Keep Microsoft Defender security intelligence current and investigate detections through Protection history.
- Do not trust pop-ups that request a phone call, remote access, payment, or a downloaded “fix.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GameScannerService.exe need to run for my Razer mouse or keyboard to work?
Basic input can often continue when Synapse is closed, but software-controlled lighting, remapping, macros, and profiles may not. The exact behavior depends on the device and which features were stored in hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill uninstalling Synapse remove my Razer device firmware?
Removing Synapse targets the Windows software and its settings, not the device’s embedded firmware. Do not interrupt a firmware update, and reinstall the correct Razer software only after Windows Security has cleared any suspicious executable.
Why does Windows show more than one Razer process at startup?
Synapse is made of several components, so multiple Razer entries can be normal when the software is installed. The useful test is whether each file has an expected Razer path and valid signature, not whether the process count is one.
What information should I send to support for a recurring crash?
Provide the exact message, full executable path, Synapse version, Windows version, device model, and whether the crash occurs at sign-in, launch, or device connection. Include Defender scan results and the time of the failure, but do not email an executable that was quarantined.
