gdalbuildvrt.exe is the Windows command-line program from GDAL that creates a VRT (Virtual Dataset) mosaic. A VRT is a small descriptor that references source rasters rather than converting them into one new raster file. The executable is not a Windows component, so its safety depends on where the file came from, the package that installed it, its path and integrity, and the results of a current malware scan. Use a documented GDAL distribution, verify that the command runs in the correct environment, and repair the original package instead of downloading replacement DLLs. The practical fixes below cover “not recognized,” missing-DLL messages, incompatible inputs, resolution and projection differences, existing outputs, long file lists, and non-zero exit codes.

What is gdalbuildvrt.exe?

GDAL’s documentation describes the utility as a program that “builds a raster VRT (Virtual Dataset) that is a mosaic of a list of input GDAL datasets.” On Windows, gdalbuildvrt.exe is the executable used to launch that utility from a command prompt, PowerShell session, or the command shell supplied by a GIS package.

Instead of reading every source raster and writing a newly encoded mosaic, the command writes a VRT XML file containing references to the input datasets and the rules used to present them as one virtual raster. The source files remain separate. Moving, renaming, or deleting a source after the VRT is created can therefore make part of the virtual mosaic unavailable unless the references are updated.

In normal mosaic mode, the VRT follows the input rasters’ band structure. With -separate, each input file is exposed as a separate band, which is useful for stacking scenes but produces a different result from a spatial mosaic. Inputs can be supplied as filenames on the command line, one filename per line in a text file with -input_file_list, or through a tile-index workflow.

What it is not

  • It is not a Windows system executable or a required component of File Explorer, Windows Update, or the desktop.
  • It is not itself a raster editor, reprojection engine, or malware scanner.
  • It does not automatically convert mismatched source coordinate systems into one common projection.
  • It is not safe merely because another file has the same name.

Is gdalbuildvrt.exe safe?

A genuine copy from a documented GDAL package is normally the expected tool for building VRT files, but a filename alone proves nothing. Treat the file as untrusted until you can identify its full path, the package that installed it, the GDAL version, and the integrity of that installation. GDAL’s Windows distribution page lists Conda Forge, GISInternals, OSGeo4W, NuGet, and vcpkg as acquisition channels; use one of those documented routes rather than a random “DLL fix” or executable-download site.

GDAL processes hundreds of raster formats and protocols. Its security policy says, “Data from untrusted sources should be treated with caution. When security is a major concern, consider running GDAL or code using GDAL in a restricted sandbox environment.” That warning applies especially when a command will open rasters, archives, network resources, or other files supplied by someone else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to check a suspicious copy

  1. Record the full path. In Command Prompt, run where gdalbuildvrt. In PowerShell, run Get-Command gdalbuildvrt -All. A path inside the environment or package you intentionally installed is more credible than an unexpected directory under a temporary download folder.
  2. Identify the owning package. Check the environment manager or installer that supplied GDAL and note its version and architecture. Do not assume that a similarly named DLL from another application is compatible.
  3. Scan the file and its inputs. Use current Windows security software and keep Windows updated. Scan any untrusted raster, archive, or network-delivered input before opening it with GDAL.
  4. Compare against a clean reinstall. If the location, package records, or file metadata do not make sense, uninstall or repair GDAL from the original channel and install it again. Do not overwrite individual DLLs from an unrelated website.
  5. Use isolation for high-risk data. Run GDAL in a restricted account, container, virtual machine, or other sandbox when the input provenance is uncertain and the consequences of code or parser exploitation are serious.

No gdalbuildvrt-specific malware prevalence statistic or independent safety certification establishes that every copy is safe. The defensible conclusion is conditional: a package you can trace to a documented GDAL distribution and that passes a current scan is materially more trustworthy than an unexplained same-named file.

Where should I install GDAL on Windows?

Choose the channel that matches the way you manage software and the environment in which you will run GDAL. The official GDAL Windows information lists the channels below; package names, supported Python versions, CPU architectures, and update timing can change, so confirm current details in the channel’s own documentation before installation.

Channel Best fit What to verify Reproducibility and shell use
Conda Forge Users who already work in Conda environments or need GDAL alongside Python geospatial packages Environment architecture, activated environment, and GDAL package version Strong environment isolation and repeatable environment files; command is available after activation
OSGeo4W Desktop GIS users who want an OSGeo-managed Windows installation and shell Selected architecture, installed component set, and the OSGeo4W shell being used Convenient integrated shell; reproduce the same package selections when rebuilding a machine
GISInternals Users who need Windows GDAL builds outside a Conda workflow Build architecture, runtime dependencies, and the exact release package Use the supplied environment or documented PATH setup; keep the installer or archive for repeat installs
NuGet .NET or application developers managing dependencies through a package manager Target framework, native runtime assets, and x64/x86 compatibility Package manifests make application builds reproducible; the executable may not be on the global PATH
vcpkg C/C++ developers integrating GDAL into a toolchain Triplet, compiler, runtime library, and application architecture Manifest mode can reproduce dependencies; invoke the executable from the installed tool environment

Keep 32-bit and 64-bit components consistent. A 64-bit executable paired with 32-bit native dependencies, or the reverse, can fail before GDAL processes a single raster. The same rule applies when an application bundles GDAL: repair the application’s package rather than copying system DLLs into its folder.

How do I confirm that gdalbuildvrt.exe launches?

Run the check in the same shell or activated environment that owns GDAL. The supported help command is a simple way to distinguish a command-discovery problem from a startup or dependency problem.

  1. Open the package’s documented command shell. Activate the relevant Conda environment, open the OSGeo4W shell, or use the developer environment configured by NuGet or vcpkg.
  2. Run gdalbuildvrt --help.
  3. Read the result. A help synopsis confirms that Windows found the command and that the executable started far enough to print its options. A “not recognized” message means command discovery or environment activation failed. A message naming a DLL means the executable was found but a native dependency could not be loaded.
  4. If the command is not found, run where gdalbuildvrt or Get-Command gdalbuildvrt -All and inspect the result. Retry from the package’s shell or call the verified absolute path, for example "C:pathtogdalbuildvrt.exe" --help.

Save the complete command, the complete console output, the executable path, the GDAL build, and the input format. Those details often determine the remedy and prevent a support exchange from losing the useful part of the error.

How do I fix “gdalbuildvrt.exe is not recognized”?

This message usually means Windows cannot find the executable in the current PATH, or the package environment that contains it is not active. It does not, by itself, show that the file is missing or damaged.

  1. Activate the intended environment. For Conda, activate the environment where GDAL was installed. For OSGeo4W, open its shell. For a developer package, use the project’s configured build or runtime shell.
  2. Check discovery. Run where gdalbuildvrt in Command Prompt or Get-Command gdalbuildvrt -All in PowerShell. If no path appears, inspect the package’s binary directory.
  3. Use an absolute path temporarily. Launch the verified file directly with "C:verifiedfoldergdalbuildvrt.exe" --help. If this works, the executable is usable and the remaining issue is PATH or shell setup.
  4. Fix PATH through the package’s documented method. Add the package’s own binary directory only when the distributor instructs you to do so. Avoid mixing directories from unrelated GDAL builds.
  5. Reopen the shell. Existing Command Prompt and PowerShell windows do not always inherit a newly changed PATH. Open a new window, activate the environment again, and repeat the help test.
  6. Repair the installation if the file is absent. Reinstall or repair GDAL from the original channel. Do not download a replacement executable from a third-party “missing file” page.

How do I fix a missing-DLL or DLL-load error?

A DLL message means Windows located gdalbuildvrt.exe but could not load a required native dependency. The executable name does not identify which dependency is missing, so use the exact DLL name and the package’s architecture to guide the repair.

  1. Copy the complete error, including the DLL name and any status code.
  2. Confirm whether the executable and package are x64 or x86, then verify that dependent runtimes use the same architecture.
  3. Repair or reinstall GDAL through the channel that installed it. This restores the package’s expected dependency set and versions.
  4. Remove accidental PATH entries that point to another GDAL build or an incompatible application’s DLL directory. A stale directory earlier in PATH can cause the wrong library to load.
  5. Restart the package shell and run gdalbuildvrt --help again before testing a real mosaic.
  6. If the problem remains, provide the package name, GDAL version, architecture, full executable path, named DLL, and complete error text to the package maintainer or application vendor.

Never copy a DLL from a random download site into the GDAL directory. Even if the message disappears, the replacement may be malicious, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible version that causes later crashes.

How do I fix skipped inputs and incompatible raster warnings?

GDAL compares important characteristics such as band count, projection, color interpretation, and related metadata. In the default non-strict mode, sources that do not match may be skipped with warnings. The result can therefore be a VRT that is created successfully but does not contain every file you supplied.

Inspect the sources first

  • Use GDAL inspection tools to record each raster’s dimensions, band count, data type, coordinate reference system, geotransform, nodata values, and color interpretation.
  • Check that every path in the list points to the file you intended and that the files can be opened independently.
  • Look for a single file with a different projection, number of bands, or interpretation; one outlier is a common reason for a warning.

Choose strictness deliberately

-non_strict is the default behavior and permits warnings for some incompatibilities. -strict turns those warnings into failures, which is preferable in an automated pipeline where silently omitting a scene would be unacceptable. Neither option makes incompatible data compatible; strictness only changes whether the command continues.

Normalize or separate the data

Convert or resample outliers to a common band layout, data type, nodata policy, and coordinate reference system before building the VRT. If the files are intentionally different, build separate VRTs or use -separate only when a band stack is the desired product.

How do I fix a resolution mismatch?

Source rasters can have different pixel sizes. Use the resolution policy that matches the analysis rather than accepting a default without checking the output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Behavior When to use it
-resolution average Uses the average source resolution; this is the documented default General mosaics where an average grid is acceptable
-resolution highest Uses the finest source resolution When retaining the smallest pixel size matters and the processing cost is acceptable
-resolution lowest Uses the coarsest source resolution When reducing output size or matching the least-detailed source is intentional
-resolution user with -tr Uses the positive target resolution values you supply When a project requires a known grid spacing
-resolution same Requires source resolutions to match and errors when they differ Quality-control pipelines that must reject mixed pixel sizes
-resolution common Computes a greatest-common-divisor resolution in versions that support it Datasets whose pixel sizes have a meaningful common divisor

For a user-defined grid, provide positive values to -tr and verify the axis order and units of the source coordinate system. A mathematically valid target resolution can still be unsuitable if the units are degrees when the project expects metres.

Does -allow_projection_difference reproject rasters?

No. -allow_projection_difference permits the VRT to be created despite a projection mismatch; it does not transform the source pixels into a common coordinate reference system. Use it only when the difference is understood and the consuming software can handle the resulting references.

When the mosaic must have one coordinate reference system, reproject the source rasters separately with an appropriate GDAL workflow, inspect the transformed outputs, and then build the VRT from those normalized files. Reprojection can change pixel size, extent, nodata edges, and resampling results, so it should be an explicit processing step rather than an assumption hidden in VRT creation.

How do I fix an existing-output, path, or quoting error?

Existing VRT

If the destination already exists and you intend to replace it, add -overwrite. Without that option, GDAL can stop to protect the existing file. Confirm the destination before overwriting because the old VRT may be the only record of a carefully assembled source list.

Paths containing spaces

Quote every Windows path that contains spaces, including the output path and each input file. For example:

gdalbuildvrt -overwrite "C:Projectsmosaicregional.vrt" "C:Source Datatile 01.tif" "C:Source Datatile 02.tif"

Multi-value arguments

Keep multi-value arguments together as one operating-system argument. Quote the complete value when your shell would otherwise split it. This matters for options such as multi-band nodata values supplied through -srcnodata or -vrtnodata.

Output directories and permissions

Confirm that the parent directory exists, that your account can write there, and that the destination is not locked by another program. Test with a simple writable folder before diagnosing the raster data itself.

Which options control the VRT’s extent, nodata, and resampling?

Once the command launches and the inputs are compatible, these controls determine what the virtual mosaic represents:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • -te sets the target extent. Use coordinates in the source coordinate system and check that the order matches the documented option syntax.
  • -tr sets target pixel size when used with the appropriate resolution mode.
  • -r selects the resampling method. Choose a method suited to the data, such as categorical versus continuous values, rather than treating all rasters identically.
  • -srcnodata identifies nodata values in the sources; -vrtnodata sets the nodata value represented by the VRT.
  • -addalpha adds an alpha band to represent transparency around valid data.
  • -separate places each input file in its own output band instead of combining overlapping files into the normal mosaic band structure.
  • -strict and -non_strict control whether certain incompatibilities stop execution or remain warnings.

Read the help output for the GDAL version actually installed. Option availability and behavior can vary between releases, and the current GDAL source release listed by the project is version 3.13.3 dated 2026-08-18.

How should I build a VRT from a long or very large source list?

Ordinary long lists

Put one source filename per line in a text file and pass it with -input_file_list. This avoids command-line length limits and makes the exact input set auditable. Use absolute paths when the list may be run from more than one working directory, or document the list’s base directory clearly.

Hundreds of thousands of rasters

For extremely large collections, GDAL advises using gdaltindex to create a tile index compatible with the GTI driver. A tile index lets the workflow manage a catalog of footprints and locations instead of expanding every filename into one enormous command. Build and validate the index first, then follow the GTI-specific VRT workflow documented for your GDAL version.

Operational checks

  • Ensure every listed file is reachable from the machine that will open the VRT.
  • Keep source paths stable or treat path changes as a migration that requires rebuilding references.
  • Test a small representative subset before launching a full collection.
  • Monitor disk space for temporary products created by any preprocessing or reprojection step; the VRT itself is only a descriptor, but preprocessing is not.

What does gdalbuildvrt.exe’s exit code mean?

The utility returns status code 0 on success and a non-zero code on error. A zero code does not guarantee that every intended source was included: non-blocking warnings can still accompany a successful run. Always capture the complete console output and inspect the resulting VRT and its source count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In an automated script, treat a non-zero code as a failed build, preserve the log, and stop downstream processing until the cause is understood. For a zero code with warnings, decide in advance whether warnings are acceptable; use -strict when omission or incompatibility must fail the job.

What information should I collect before asking for help?

Include enough context for another person to reproduce the failure without guessing:

  • The exact error and warning text, copied from the console
  • The full path returned by where gdalbuildvrt or Get-Command gdalbuildvrt -All
  • The GDAL version, package channel, Windows edition, and x64/x86 architecture
  • The complete command line, with sensitive paths redacted consistently rather than removing option values
  • The input format, number of files, projections, band counts, and resolution differences
  • Whether the failure occurs with gdalbuildvrt --help, a single test raster, or only the full collection
  • Whether the output already exists and whether the destination directory is writable

This information separates PATH and dependency failures from data-compatibility and command-construction failures. It also prevents an unnecessary reinstall when the actual issue is a projection mismatch or a skipped input.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and vulnerabilities, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, no tool repairs every crash, and its free trial is limited by category before a subscription is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete gdalbuildvrt.exe if I do not use GIS software?

If no installed application or workflow depends on GDAL, removing the package that supplied it is generally safer than deleting the executable by hand. First check the package manager and the file path, because another GIS or developer application may rely on the same installation.

Why does a VRT open on one computer but not another?

A VRT stores references to its source datasets, so the second computer must be able to resolve the same paths or equivalent locations. Differences in mapped drives, permissions, GDAL drivers, or package versions can make an otherwise valid VRT appear broken.

Will building a VRT reduce the size of my raster data?

The VRT descriptor is usually much smaller than a newly encoded mosaic because it references existing rasters. It does not compress, resample, or archive those source files; storage savings disappear if you still need to create a physical output for another application.

How can I tell whether skipped files changed my analysis?

Compare the intended file count with the sources reported in the console and inspect the VRT metadata after creation. Re-run with -strict in a test copy to turn compatibility warnings into failures, then correct or intentionally exclude the outliers.
