GemPcCCID.exe is associated with Gemalto’s GemCCID smart-card reader software. A legitimate copy may launch the reader’s setup or support components, but the filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine or safe. An ANY.RUN analysis of one sample labelled it “Malicious activity”; that sample had an untrusted certificate, dropped or overwrote executable content, and changed an autorun registry entry. Those observations apply to that submitted sample, not automatically to every file with this name. Verify the complete path, digital signature, origin, behavior and security-scan results before deciding whether to keep, update, quarantine or remove it.
What is GemPcCCID.exe?
GemPcCCID.exe is a Windows executable identified in malware-analysis records as a Gemalto Setup Suite Launcher for GemCCID smart-card reader software. The ANY.RUN record lists Company as Gemalto, Description as “Setup Suite Launcher Unicode” and Version as 4.1.4.0. The related GemCCID.sys file is described by FreeFixer as a Gemalto USB Smart Card Reader Driver, version 4.1.3.0, with a valid Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher signature in the sample it examined.

What the available sample evidence means
The ANY.RUN report is evidence about one submitted executable. It records an untrusted certificate, executable files being dropped or overwritten and an autorun registry modification. Those behaviors can be consistent with malware, but they do not establish that every GemPcCCID.exe on every Windows computer is malicious. A separate Hybrid Analysis record identifies a particular PE32 Windows sample and publishes hashes; a hash comparison is meaningful only when your file matches that exact sample.

Is GemPcCCID.exe safe?
There is no blanket yes-or-no answer based only on the filename. Treat a copy as lower risk when it came with a smart-card reader from the hardware maker, resides in that product’s normal installation directory, carries a valid signature from the expected publisher and passes a current Microsoft Defender scan. An unsigned file, an invalid signature, an unexpected location or an unsolicited download increases concern, but any single warning is not conclusive by itself.
Use this verification sequence
- Find the exact file. In Task Manager, right-click the GemPcCCID.exe process and choose Open file location. If it is not running, search from File Explorer and record the full path, file size and modified date. A vendor program folder is less suspicious than a temporary directory, browser-download folder or an unfamiliar user-profile location.
- Inspect the signature. Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures and select the listed signer. Choose Details and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. An absent or invalid signature raises the risk level; it does not, on its own, prove that the file is malware.
- Check provenance. Identify the reader, token or card software you installed and where the installer came from. A package downloaded from the hardware manufacturer is materially different from an email attachment, cracked installer, pop-up advertisement or random “driver” site.
- Scan the file and the computer. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, right-click the file and select Scan with Microsoft Defender, then run a full scan. Microsoft recommends Defender Offline when unwanted software persists or a threat may be hiding while Windows is running.
- Compare a hash if necessary. The Hybrid Analysis record contains hashes for one submitted sample. Calculate the hash of your file with PowerShell and compare it only with that exact record. A matching filename without a matching hash proves nothing, and a different hash does not automatically prove safety because legitimate builds can differ.

Do not upload a sensitive corporate or identity-card component to a public scanner without your organization’s approval. A scan result is one input to the decision, not a substitute for checking the file’s source and signature.

Repeated pop-ups or process launches usually have one of four explanations: a reader utility is configured to start with Windows, an incomplete installation keeps retrying, Windows is repeatedly detecting a driver problem, or an untrusted program has created persistence. The same filename can therefore represent a normal startup component or a security incident.

Expected reader software
Some GemCCID packages start a setup launcher when a reader is connected or when Windows logs in. Disconnect the reader, restart Windows and observe whether the process returns. If it appears only when the hardware is attached and the path and signature check out, the behavior is consistent with an installed reader utility.
Damaged or stale installation
A failed upgrade can leave a launcher pointing to a missing driver or an old component. Device Manager may show the reader with a warning icon, or Windows may display a code such as 10, 28 or 31. Record the exact code and the device name before removing anything; the code helps the hardware vendor select the correct package.
Unexpected persistence
An autorun entry, scheduled task or startup shortcut that you did not create deserves investigation. The autorun change seen in the ANY.RUN sample is a reason to inspect startup behavior, not proof that your own copy made the same change. Do not “fix” a suspicious startup entry by downloading a replacement DLL or an unofficial cleaner.

How do I fix GemPcCCID.exe errors when the reader is legitimate?
Use the following order when you own the reader and the file passes basic provenance and security checks. These steps preserve a working certificate or card setup whenever possible.
- Disconnect and reconnect the hardware. Safely remove the smart-card reader, unplug it, wait several seconds and connect it directly to another USB port. Avoid an unpowered hub while testing. Restart Windows after reconnecting.
- Check Windows Update driver options. Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. Install a GemCCID or smart-card-reader driver offered for your Windows edition, then restart.
- Inspect Device Manager. Press Win+X and choose Device Manager. Expand Smart card readers, Universal Serial Bus controllers and, where present, Security devices. Double-click the reader, read the Device status message on the General tab and write down the error code. On the Driver tab, note the provider, date and version before changing anything.
- Let Windows rebuild a failed device entry. In Device Manager, right-click the affected reader and choose Uninstall device. Do not select a box that removes a driver package unless you have a known-good replacement. Shut down, disconnect the reader, start Windows, then reconnect it so Plug and Play can enumerate it again.
- Obtain the current package from the hardware manufacturer. If Windows Update has no suitable driver, use the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact reader model and Windows version. Microsoft advises using the vendor’s site; newer releases are more likely to be Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher signed. Do not substitute a package for a similar-looking reader.
- Reinstall the reader software. In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove the GemCCID or reader application only when you have the official installer available and know which card-management programs depend on it. Restart, install the package as an administrator if the vendor requires it, and reconnect the reader when prompted.
- Test the card application. Insert the card or token, open the application that uses it and check whether the certificate or reader is listed. If the reader works but GemPcCCID.exe still generates an error, capture the exact wording, path and event time for vendor support instead of deleting random files.
What not to do during a driver repair
- Do not use “DLL download” sites or repackaged driver installers. They can replace a system component with an incompatible or altered file.
- Do not add GemPcCCID.exe or its folder to a Defender exclusion merely to suppress an alert.
- Do not edit the registry to remove a startup entry until you have confirmed whether the reader software needs it and whether the file is trusted.
- Do not install a 32-bit package on a 64-bit system, or a package for a different reader model, just because the filename looks similar.
How do I handle an unexpected or detected GemPcCCID.exe?
If you do not recognize the reader software, or Defender or another trusted security product flags the file, stop treating the problem as an ordinary driver error. Preserve evidence and isolate the computer before attempting cleanup.
- Do not run the file again. Close any prompt and do not approve an elevation request. Never create a Defender exclusion for it.
- Disconnect from the network when compromise is plausible. Unplug Ethernet or disable Wi-Fi while you investigate, especially if the process is repeatedly launching, changing startup settings or contacting unknown services.
- Quarantine with Microsoft Defender. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, select the detection and choose the available quarantine or removal action. If you manually found the file, right-click it and scan it before moving or deleting it.
- Remove software you do not recognize. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and sort by install date. Uninstall an unknown reader utility or bundled program only after recording its name and publisher; this record can help support or an incident responder.
- Run a full scan, then Defender Offline if needed. Update security intelligence first. If the detection returns, the process recreates itself or a startup entry remains, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work because Windows restarts into the offline environment.
- Review persistence points. Check Settings > Apps > Startup, Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, Task Scheduler and the Run entries in the registry. Disable or remove only entries tied to the untrusted file, and export a registry key before editing it. If the machine belongs to an employer, hand these details to IT rather than making unilateral changes.
- Change credentials from a clean device if necessary. If the suspicious process ran with administrator rights or you entered a card PIN while it was active, ask your organization whether certificates, tokens or passwords should be revoked or reset.
Should I keep, update, or remove it?
Choose the recovery path from evidence rather than from the filename. This comparison keeps a legitimate reader installation separate from a potentially compromised executable.

| Evidence | Keep or update | Quarantine or remove |
|---|---|---|
| Source and signature | Installed with the reader manufacturer’s package; signer is expected and Windows reports a valid signature. | Origin is unknown, downloaded unexpectedly, unsigned or signed by an unrelated publisher. |
| File location | Normal directory under the reader or vendor application installation. | Temporary, download, browser-cache or unfamiliar user-profile directory. |
| Observed behavior | Starts when the reader is connected and performs the expected setup or support function. | Drops or overwrites executables, creates unexplained autorun entries, repeatedly relaunches or triggers security detections. |
| Hardware status | Your reader is installed, recognized in Device Manager and needed for a card or token. | No matching hardware exists, or the reader is not needed and the associated software is unknown. |
| Recovery path | Use Windows Update or the exact manufacturer package; reinstall only from an official source. | Isolate, quarantine, scan and escalate to Defender Offline or qualified support. |
When should I contact the hardware vendor or IT?
Contact support when the reader’s exact model and Windows edition are known but the official package still produces a Device Manager error, when a certificate or token stops working after a driver change, or when policy prevents you from removing a detected file. Provide the model, Windows version, Device Manager error code, full executable path, signature status, installation source and the steps already attempted. Do not send private card data or authentication secrets in a support ticket.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, check selected vulnerabilities and log app crashes. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
What should you remember about GemPcCCID.exe?
The name points to Gemalto/GemCCID smart-card reader software, but a filename is not an identity certificate. Verify the path, publisher signature, provenance, behavior and scan results. For a confirmed reader installation, use Windows Update or the exact hardware manufacturer’s support package; for an unexpected or persistent detection, quarantine and scan rather than downloading an unofficial replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete GemPcCCID.exe if I do not use a smart-card reader?
First confirm that no certificate, token, corporate login or security application depends on the reader package. Record the file path and publisher, uninstall the associated application from Installed apps, restart and check Device Manager; deleting the executable alone can leave a broken startup entry or driver behind.

What does a GemPcCCID.exe hash tell me?
A SHA-256 hash identifies the exact bytes of one file. It can show that your copy matches or differs from a published Hybrid Analysis sample, but it cannot certify every build with the same filename and it does not reveal whether a differently hashed file is legitimate.
Why does Windows show a smart-card reader error after an update?
An update can replace, disable or mismatch the reader driver, particularly when the device is older than the current Windows release. Check Optional driver updates, compare the provider and version in Device Manager, and obtain a package for the exact model from its manufacturer before rolling back or reinstalling.
Is an untrusted digital signature proof that GemPcCCID.exe is malware?
No. It means Windows cannot validate the signer or certificate for that file, which is a significant warning when combined with an unknown source or suspicious behavior. Treat it as a reason to quarantine or investigate and rely on a current security scan and provenance checks for the final decision.
