getdpi.exe is an ambiguous filename, not a verdict. It can be a legitimate helper installed with applications such as YoshinoGRAPH or an older release of Auto C, but an unexpected copy should be treated as unknown until you verify its path, publisher and behavior. Many “getdpi.exe” searches actually refer to a different problem: an application calling the Windows GetDpiForWindow API and receiving “The procedure entry point could not be located in User32.dll.” That function is part of Windows, not a separate executable or download. What is getdpi.exe?

Is getdpi.exe safe or a virus?
There is no safe-or-malicious answer based only on the filename. A vendor-installed copy in the expected application directory, signed by the relevant publisher, is materially different from an unsigned file launched at startup from a random user profile folder. 1. Record the exact location
If the process is running, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select the process, open its context menu and choose Open file location. Copy the complete path, including the drive and every folder. A path under the directory of a program you intentionally installed is worth investigating as part of that program; a path under a temporary download, an unfamiliar AppData subfolder or a newly created startup directory needs more scrutiny.
2. Check the publisher and signature
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect both Details and Digital Signatures. A signature should identify a publisher and show whether Windows considers it valid. An absent signature does not by itself prove malware, particularly for older or niche utilities, but it removes one useful piece of evidence. Compare the stated product and publisher with the application you installed rather than trusting a filename or icon.

Ask which installed program needs the file. Check the file’s folder, the shortcut or uninstall entry for the associated application, and any recent installer or update that created it. A GetDPI helper documented by YoshinoGRAPH should be present with that application’s files; an older Auto C installation may contain one because of the historical distribution described in its version history. If no known application claims the file, do not assume that a familiar-looking name makes it legitimate.
4. Treat reputation warnings as a signal, not a verdict

The message “The procedure entry point GetDpiForWindow could not be located in User32.dll” generally indicates a compatibility mismatch: the application expects an API that the installed Windows build does not provide, or the application and system components are otherwise incompatible. The message can appear even when no getdpi.exe exists on the computer. Do not interpret the error itself as evidence that an executable is infected.
How do I capture the exact error before changing anything?
Small wording differences determine whether you are dealing with an executable, an API compatibility problem or a damaged installation. Before reinstalling software, write down the following:
- The complete text of the dialog, including whether it names
getdpi.exe,GetDpiForWindoworUser32.dll. - The full path shown by Task Manager’s Open file location, if a process is present.
- The application that was starting or running when the dialog appeared.
- Whether the message appears once, at every boot, or only when a particular feature is opened.

YoshinoGRAPH installations
If the message appears while launching YoshinoGRAPH’s newer yg.exe package, reinstall or update it from YoshinoGRAPH’s official download. Follow the vendor’s instruction to install the external GetDPI.exe in the same application installation arrangement. A helper copied into an arbitrary folder, separated from the program that expects it, may not be found or may be the wrong version.
Auto C installations
Auto C’s version history documents a period when a separate GetDPI.exe was distributed and later notes that the program stopped using it after measuring DPI internally. If you have an older Auto C release, update or reinstall using the vendor’s supported package. Do not infer that a current copy must contain the historical helper, and do not copy a file from another computer without confirming that the application version matches.
Any other application
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows) to identify the program. If it offers Repair, run that first; otherwise uninstall, restart Windows, and install the current release from the developer’s official source. Temporarily preserve the error details and the original path so you can tell whether the reinstall replaced the expected files.
How do I scan an unexpected getdpi.exe safely?
When the file has no clear owner, use Windows Security rather than opening it to test what it does.

Microsoft describes potentially unwanted applications as software that can slow a machine, display unexpected ads or install other unwanted software. Those symptoms justify a security response, but they do not establish that a vendor-supplied GetDPI helper is malicious. Let the path, publisher, owning application and scan results determine what you do next.

Should I download GetDpiForWindow.dll or replace User32.dll?
No. GetDpiForWindow is an exported function in Windows’ User32.dll; it is not a standalone DLL or executable. Downloading a file with a similar name from a DLL site can introduce an incompatible or tampered system component and can obscure the original cause.
If Windows meets the documented version requirement and the application still reports the missing entry point, update or reinstall that application first. Consider Windows system-file repair only when there is independent evidence of operating-system corruption, such as multiple unrelated Windows components failing. In that situation, an administrator can use Microsoft’s supported System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management procedures; do not replace User32.dll by hand.

- Confirm the path again. An installer may leave an old copy in a startup folder while placing the corrected copy elsewhere.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Install the release intended for your Windows architecture when the vendor provides separate packages; do not mix helper files between architectures or versions.
- Remove stale third-party launchers. A shortcut, scheduled task or startup entry can continue launching an obsolete executable after the main program is updated.
- Test with security software enabled. Do not disable protection simply to make an unknown executable run. If a legitimate installer is blocked, verify its source and publisher and consult the application’s vendor.

Can I safely delete getdpi.exe?
Do not delete it solely because the name looks unfamiliar. First identify the owning application and verify whether that release documents the helper.
