GetGameToken32.exe is normally a small component of the EA Desktop app and older Origin client. A copy in the expected Electronic Arts program folder, signed by Electronic Arts and confirmed clean by Microsoft Defender, is consistent with a legitimate installation. The filename alone is not proof of safety, however: a separate sample with the same name has been indexed as Backdoor.Gen. Treat an unexpected copy, an invalid signature, or a Defender detection as suspicious until you verify the exact file.

The executable is part of the launcher’s authentication or game-token handling workflow. You may see it start briefly when the EA app launches or when a game is started. A normal installation should keep it inside the EA or Origin program directory rather than a user-writable folder such as Downloads, Temp or AppData.
Is GetGameToken32.exe safe?
It can be safe when it is the signed EA component in the expected installation directory, but the filename is not enough to make that determination. How can I tell whether my exact copy is legitimate?
Do not run an unexpected copy merely to see what happens. First preserve the evidence, then inspect the file while it is blocked or quarantined.
Check the complete path
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and read the complete location on the General tab. A typical EA Desktop path is under C:Program FilesElectronic ArtsEA DesktopEA Desktop. Older Origin installations may use an Origin program directory. A copy in Downloads, %TEMP%, %APPDATA%, a Startup folder, a random scheduled-task directory, or a mod/crack package needs stronger scrutiny.

Check the digital signature
Open Properties → Digital Signatures, select the signer and choose Details. Windows should report that the signature is valid and identify the expected Electronic Arts publisher. A valid signature is useful evidence, not an absolute guarantee: signing credentials can be abused and a malicious file may be unsigned rather than obviously mis-signed.
Calculate a hash
For a file you are allowed to examine, open Windows PowerShell and run:

If the executable is running, note its location before ending it. Task Manager can show the process and its Open file location command. In PowerShell, these commands can record the process ID, executable path and parent process when Windows exposes them:

Scan the exact file and the system
Right-click the file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, then open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options and select Full scan. Keep a detection quarantined while you verify its origin; do not restore it simply because an Origin inventory contains a file with the same name. Microsoft Security Intelligence states that Windows Defender detects and removes the relevant Win32/Gamker threat family, whose documented behavior includes keylogging, screenshots, command-line capture and transmission of stolen data.
Why is Windows blocking GetGameToken32.exe?
Blocking can reflect a damaged legitimate installation, a change in reputation, a policy restriction, or malware using the same name. The notification text and the path determine which branch is appropriate.
Defender quarantined or detected the file
Leave the item in quarantine and run a full scan. Record the detection name, file path, timestamp and hash. If the file is outside the EA or Origin directory, has no valid EA signature, or reappears after removal, treat the event as a possible compromise rather than an ordinary launcher error.
SmartScreen or reputation protection stopped it
Do not bypass the warning merely to test the executable. Confirm the publisher and path first, update the EA app through its normal channel, and rescan after the update. How do I fix a GetGameToken32.exe error safely?
There is no single universal fix because the title does not identify a Windows build, error code, path, signature or whether the executable actually ran. Follow the sequence below and stop when the evidence points to malware rather than a damaged launcher.
- Capture the exact error. Write down the full message, error code, file path, Windows version, EA app or Origin version, signer status and SHA-256 hash. A screenshot is useful, but transcribe the path and code as well.
- Do not execute an unexpected file. If it came from Downloads, Temp, AppData, a crack or mod package, or an unknown installer, leave it blocked or quarantined. Do not add a Defender exclusion and do not click through a warning just to make the game launch.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Use Windows Security’s full-scan option and allow quarantine or removal. If the result names a related trojan family, follow Microsoft’s cleanup guidance and restart when requested.
- Protect accounts if the file ran from an unexplained location. Stop using sensitive accounts on that PC until cleanup is complete. From a separate trusted device where possible, change email, game, payment and other important passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and review account activity. Microsoft notes that related trojans can steal financial and other sensitive information.
- Verify a presumed legitimate installation. Confirm that the path belongs to EA Desktop or Origin, the Electronic Arts signature is valid, the hash is expected for that release, and Defender finds no threat. If any of those checks fail, continue with malware investigation instead of repair.
- Use the launcher’s own update or repair function. Open the EA app’s help or recovery options and choose its available repair, clear-cache or update action. For a legacy Origin installation, use the installer obtained through the official EA distribution channel. The exact labels can vary by client generation.
- Reinstall the whole application when repair cannot restore the component. Uninstall the damaged EA or Origin client through Settings → Apps → Installed apps, restart Windows, download the current installer from EA, and reinstall. Do not replace only GetGameToken32.exe with a copy from an executable-download site; a lone file can be the wrong version or contain malware.
- Check after repair. Recheck the complete path, digital signature and Defender status. Launch the EA app and a game once, then confirm that the executable is being started by the expected launcher rather than by an unknown task or Run entry.
- Escalate a recurring anomaly. Can I delete GetGameToken32.exe?
Deleting it manually is usually the wrong first step. If it is malicious, deleting one file without removing its startup mechanism, scheduled task or companion files can leave the compromise active.

No single row proves legitimacy. For example, a file can have a familiar path but an invalid signature, or a valid signature but a parent process that does not fit the EA client. Weigh the complete set of observations and retain the exact evidence for support or incident response.

If only the launcher fails while those checks pass, record the exact Windows error and use EA’s support process for the current client version.

If a second copy appears elsewhere, or the same detection returns immediately, disconnect the affected PC from sensitive activity and investigate persistence before reinstalling again. Check unfamiliar scheduled tasks and startup entries, but do not delete entries blindly; export their details and scan the referenced files.
