GetMachineSID.exe is usually a temporary installer helper used while installing Stardock software such as SpaceMonger, WindowBlinds, Start11 or Groupy. A separate analysis recorded the same filename being created and executed from %TEMP%_ir_sf_temp_0 while Stardock WindowBlinds components were installed. Other sandbox records associate the name with Start11 and Groupy installer activity, including temporary-file creation followed by cleanup. These observations explain why the file may appear briefly during setup without being part of the permanent Windows installation.

The name refers to obtaining a machine security identifier, but the available reports do not establish a single, documented purpose for every build. There is no universal hash or release manifest proving that every file called GetMachineSID.exe is genuine. Treat the observed Stardock installer context as a useful clue, not a blanket safety certificate.

Is getmachinesid.exe safe?
It can be safe when it is created by an installer you intentionally launched, resides in that installer’s temporary folder, carries a valid publisher signature and passes an up-to-date Defender scan. It is not safe to approve solely because the spelling looks familiar. Malware can use a legitimate-looking filename, and even a clean sandbox result applies only to the exact sample tested.
1. Inspect the complete path
In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and read the location on the General tab. A path below your user profile’s AppDataLocalTemp, especially inside _ir_sf_temp_0 while a Stardock setup program is running, matches the observed installer behavior.
Be more cautious if the file is in C:Windows, a user startup folder, a random permanent directory, a downloads folder unrelated to the installer, or a location that reappears after you delete it. A suspicious location does not by itself prove malware, but it means you should not run the file until its origin is established.
2. Check the digital signature
Open Properties > Digital Signatures. The signer should identify the publisher associated with the installer, and the signature status should verify successfully. Select the signature, choose Details, and check that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the file has not changed since signing.

Why does getmachinesid.exe keep popping up?

How do I fix a getmachinesid.exe error?
There is no dedicated Microsoft or Stardock support page defining one universal getmachinesid.exe error code. Use the following sequence, stopping when the cause is resolved.

DISM repairs the Windows component store and supplies files that System File Checker may need. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces corrupted copies. Restart after both commands complete, and keep the result messages if you need further support. These tools repair Windows components; they do not certify that an unknown GetMachineSID.exe is legitimate.
