gotoassist.exe is a Windows executable associated with GoTo remote-support software. - Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Choose Details. If you see the process under another view, right-click it and choose Go to details.
- Right-click
gotoassist.exeand select Open file location. - Record the complete path, file size and modified date. Do not delete the file merely because the folder is unfamiliar; use the other checks below.
A path that does not match the download or support workflow you recognize is a reason to investigate, not proof of malware. A malicious program can copy a familiar name, and a legitimate older component can be stored somewhere you do not expect.
Is gotoassist.exe safe?

Verify the download source
For a session you meant to join, return to GoTo’s official support or download route and follow the instructions for the product and version involved. Do not replace a failed file with a copy from a third-party software archive. If a person sent you an unexpected executable or asked you to disable security controls, stop and contact GoTo through its official support channel instead.

- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- On the Digital Signatures tab, select the signer and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the publisher is the expected GoTo entity for the product generation.
- On the General tab, compare the location with the path you recorded and note whether Windows shows an unblock option for a file downloaded from the internet.
A matching icon or spelling is not authentication. If the signature is absent, invalid or from an unexpected publisher, do not run the file and do not add an exception for it.
Interpret reports about suspicious samples correctly
A public ANY.RUN report dated October 25, 2023 describes malicious activity in one analyzed sample named GoToAssist.exe. The report also warns that its analysis can be affected by user actions and does not guarantee maliciousness. This is evidence that a familiar filename can be impersonated or used by a suspicious sample; it is not proof that every legitimate GoToAssist download is malware.
Do not rely on an old session guarantee
A legacy GoTo FAQ says a customer must participate in a support session and that representative access ends when the session ends unless the customer makes another explicit request. That guidance is dated and should not be treated as a blanket promise for every current product, unattended-support configuration or component. Verify the software and session you are actually using.

1. Capture the details Windows shows
- Copy the complete error message, including any code or referenced DLL.
- Record whether you are on Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7 and whether the problem occurs at download, launch, connection or session start.
- Write down the GoToAssist product generation or version shown in the support instructions.
- Save the full path, publisher and signature result from the checks above.
These details prevent a fix for one component from being applied to another. There is no single current file path or universal repair sequence established for all gotoassist.exe errors.
2. Re-download only from the official route
If you intended to join support, close the failed copy and navigate manually to GoTo’s official support/download page. Follow the instructions for the relevant app and version, then compare the new file’s publisher and signature before launching it. Representative software and customer software are not interchangeable. If you are a customer, use the customer-attended download and support key supplied for your session. If you are a support representative, obtain the representative application specified by your organization. A file that launches but rejects a session ID or shows missing parameters may simply be the wrong generation or role.

6. Check for a version or session mismatch
Compare the version in the support instructions with the executable’s Properties details and the date it was downloaded. End the old session, obtain a fresh support key if the representative issued one, and download the matching app again. Do not combine command-line switches from an older guide with a newer executable unless the current product documentation explicitly supports them.
7. Isolate the failure without deleting system files
Restart Windows, then try the verified official download once more. If the same message appears, note whether it occurs before any connection window opens or only after a support key is entered. Stop interacting with the executable until you establish its origin and signature. Disconnecting an active remote-support session is reasonable if you did not authorize it, but do not destroy evidence before recording the path, file name, publisher and any security alert.
- Do not open the file again, approve an elevation prompt or add a firewall or antivirus exception.
- Run a scan with the security software already trusted on the PC.
- Contact GoTo through its official support route if someone claimed the file was part of a support session.
- If the scan identifies a threat, follow the security product’s quarantine and recovery instructions; do not restore the file merely because it is named
