gpuz.exe is the Windows executable for TechPowerUp GPU-Z, a freeware utility that identifies your graphics hardware and reports driver, clock, PCI Express, BIOS and sensor information. It is not a Windows system component, a graphics driver, or an overclocking controller. A copy obtained from the TechPowerUp GPU-Z page referenced by NVIDIA is the appropriate baseline, but the filename alone cannot prove that any file is legitimate. If GPU-Z will not start, cannot detect an adapter, shows blank sensors or exposes an old driver, use the manual Windows and vendor-driver checks below before considering an automated repair utility.

GPU-Z reports state; it does not repair a driver, change fan speed or replace Windows troubleshooting. If a reading reveals a problem, the repair normally happens in Device Manager, Windows settings or the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel driver package.
Is gpuz.exe safe to run?
A properly obtained GPU-Z copy is generally considered trusted software, but safety depends on the file and its source. Guild Wars 2 Support describes GPU-Z as trusted while noting that it is third-party software, can be modified outside ArenaNet’s control and remains the user’s responsibility to secure. A random file with the same name is not automatically genuine.

gpuz.exe, open Properties and review its location, publisher or signature information when Windows provides it. What should you check before fixing a GPU-Z error?
First identify the symptom and preserve useful evidence. The same executable can fail because of a damaged download, Windows app problems, a missing display driver or a limitation of the adapter’s firmware.
- Write down whether GPU-Z fails to launch, shows an error, detects the wrong adapter, leaves sensor fields blank or crashes during a game.
- Note the GPU-Z version, Windows edition, graphics-card model and driver version shown before the failure, if available.
- Close other hardware-monitoring utilities temporarily. Several programs can compete for the same sensor interface, producing missing or implausible values.
- If the issue began after a driver or GPU change, restart Windows once before making further changes. A restart clears a partially loaded display driver and gives Device Manager a fresh enumeration.
How do I fix gpuz.exe when it will not start?
Work from the least invasive check to the more general Windows repair steps. Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified site just because the first copy failed.

- Download a fresh copy from the official path. Use the TechPowerUp GPU-Z page referenced by NVIDIA. Choose the portable build when you want to test the program without changing the installation, or use the optional installer if you need a normal Windows installation.
- Save it locally and scan it. Keep the download in a folder you control, inspect its Properties, and run a Windows Security scan if the file was unexpected or your security software flagged it.
- Restart Windows. A restart can clear a locked executable, a pending update or a graphics-driver process that prevented startup.
- Try the other distribution type. If the installed copy fails, close any remaining GPU-Z process and test the portable executable. If the portable copy works, remove the damaged installation through Installed apps and reinstall from the verified source.
- Use Windows’ app controls when the failure is broader than GPU-Z. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the affected application when it appears, and use Advanced options > Repair. If Repair does not help, Windows may offer Reset; this can remove that app’s local settings.
- Run Microsoft’s program troubleshooter guidance. Microsoft’s support steps for Windows programs cover restart, repair, reset, uninstall and troubleshooting paths. Follow the instructions for your Windows edition rather than applying registry changes from an unverified guide.
If only one copy fails while a newly downloaded, scanned portable copy runs, the original file or installation is the likely cause. If every copy fails and other Windows programs are also affected, investigate the wider Windows app or security problem instead of repeatedly downloading GPU-Z.

GPU-Z can report only an adapter that Windows and its driver have enumerated. Check Device Manager first, then repair the display-driver path before treating a missing GPU-Z entry as proof of failed hardware.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters. Look for the expected NVIDIA, AMD or Intel adapter, a yellow warning icon or an entry listed as a basic display device.
- Open the adapter’s Properties and read the Device status and problem code. Record the code before changing the driver.
- For a command-line inventory, open an elevated Command Prompt and run
pnputil /enum-devices /problem. To inspect one entry in detail, runpnputil /enum-devices /instanceid <device instance path>, replacing the bracketed text with the instance path shown in Device Manager.
Repair the driver and retry
- Download the driver for the exact GPU and Windows edition from the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel support site. Avoid a package intended for a different model or operating-system version.
- Install or repair the package according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then restart Windows even if the installer does not insist on it.
- Open GPU-Z again and confirm that the adapter name and driver details now appear.
New hardware support is added in GPU-Z releases. If Device Manager sees the adapter correctly but an older GPU-Z version labels it generically or omits fields, update GPU-Z before diagnosing the card as defective. A laptop may also expose integrated and discrete adapters; select the intended GPU in GPU-Z before comparing readings.
Why are GPU-Z sensors blank, zero or implausible?
Sensor availability is not universal. The GPU, laptop design, firmware, graphics driver and other monitoring software determine which values can be read, so a missing field is not by itself evidence of a failed card.
- Open the Sensors tab and verify that GPU-Z is displaying the adapter you intend to test.
- Update GPU-Z from the verified TechPowerUp source if the device is new or the installed release is old.
- Install the current official graphics driver for the exact adapter and restart Windows.
- Close competing monitoring or tuning programs temporarily, then compare the value again under a known workload.
- Interpret an unavailable field as unavailable data. Do not substitute a zero or blank value for a temperature, clock or load measurement that the hardware does not expose.
Readings that change with workload are more useful than a single idle snapshot. If several tools disagree, record the GPU model, driver version and conditions and ask the hardware or game vendor for guidance rather than changing firmware based on one sensor field.

Can an old driver cause GPU-Z errors or game crashes?
GPU-Z displays the installed driver version and date, which makes it a convenient check after a game crash or a performance change. Guild Wars 2 Support notes that an outdated driver can reduce feature optimization and contribute to lower frame rates or crashes; the same diagnostic principle applies to other games, although the exact cause still needs testing.
- In GPU-Z, record the driver version and date shown for the selected adapter.
- Compare those details with the current package listed for your model on the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel support page.

- Reopen GPU-Z and confirm that the displayed driver details changed as expected.

How do I create a GPU-Z sensor log for support?
A short sensor log can show what the adapter was doing immediately before a failure. NVIDIA’s documented workflow is:
- Launch GPU-Z and select the correct GPU when more than one adapter is present.
- Open the Sensors tab.
- Enable Log to file and choose a location you can find easily.
- Reproduce the problem, capturing about one minute of activity.
- Stop the logging action, close the file if necessary and attach it to the support case.
Review the log before posting it publicly. Hardware and system details may be present, and your support organization may treat them as sensitive. Send it through the organization’s approved case system instead of an open forum when privacy matters.

Both forms provide the same core reporting purpose; the practical difference is how Windows stores and launches them.

When should I remove gpuz.exe?
Remove GPU-Z when you no longer need its readings, when the copy came from an untrusted location or when a clean test requires eliminating a damaged installation. For an installed copy, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select GPU-Z and choose Uninstall. For a portable copy, exit GPU-Z, delete the executable and review any log files separately.
If Windows Security reports a suspicious file, quarantine or remove it according to the security product’s instructions and investigate where it came from. Do not restore an unknown copy merely because its filename is gpuz.exe; obtain a fresh file from the verified source if you still need the utility.
